Good lord, traylor is in rare form
@JayHawkFanToo Good point.
@HighEliteMajor Maybe Chinese kids care as little about basketball as our "urban" kids care about soccer? Or ping pong?
Still, out of a billion people, you'd think someone of authority in China would see at least one 7 foot 15 yr old boy working in a plastic factory and see some potential for something else.
Oh, another time... big-time basketball injury. I'd been married about 2 years, living in Lawrence. Was at one of the grade schools over in East Lawrence shooting hoops on the playground.
Usually when I tell this story, it was a regulation 10 ft rim, but honestly, it was about a 9 ft rim, so I was having fun doing 360 slams and alley oop dunks and stuff. Unfortunately, I was wearing my wedding ring. Went up for a reverse slam and had what the ER doctor called a 50% "de-gloving" accident as the ring caught on the rim and nearly took my finger off (well, the skin anyway). Nine stitches. Had to cut the ring off (sorry, hon') and haven't worn one since!
Only sports injury I had occurred while watching football scouting film one afternoon before practice. Back in the early 1980s. Crappy b&w 8mm tape. No AC in schools back in them days... Walked to school through snow uphill both ways, etc. (actually I lived across the street from the high school so I did walk)
Anyway, I decided the room was hot, and the high school window I tried to open was stuck, so I bumped it with my palm to nudge it free and my hand went through the glass. Eight stitches. Lots of blood. Felt OK during practice a couple hours later until the local wore off. Had it wrapped like a cast the next day for the game and somehow managed to get flagged for my one and only holding penalty the entire year.
Good times!
A minor change would have done the trick, IMO:
@JayHawkFanToo True. Lebron only dribbled twice in the entire playoffs.
C'mon Jaybate, how could you have missed the 3/16" x 1/4" US flags on the middle of the shoelaces?
@wrwlumpy Huh. I thought the seven stars represented the seven americans who've coached at Kansas.
Those workout mix tapes are pretty silly... 5-10 middle aged white dude pretending to play defense. Ripe for a good parody. Or maybe that was a parody.
(Hopefully someone warns Kelly that he gets an extra half step in the NBA and not an extra four.)
Went to a basketball game and a hockey game broke out.
@globaljaybird Lots of fun at the end with the crowd getting into it.

LOL, someone let their kid wear a spider man costume.
We sort of suck this quarter so far
Vick is a stick
KUSA
I'm not really expecting the exhibition games at Sprint Center to be quality basketball. Snagged some decent seats, so I'm going to tomorrow night's game. I'll be in an off-the-grid cabin on top of a mountain in colorado on Friday, so I doubt I'll give that one a second thought... although, on the off chance I have cell service, if anyone has a live stream amateur feed on friday, post a url, oK? :-)
@ralster The WUG is still more good than bad. Like you said, get Mason/Selden/Ellis on the same page now and this fall and next spring we'll be in great shape to win a LOT of games. Add Bragg and Vick to get some court time to get rid of some of the jitters, and Lucas/Mick/Traylor to solidify their roles and we're still in a better position than without the games.
Plus, I get to go see a KU BB game next week!
It's time to call Nadiir Tharpe.
Bragg looks like the real deal. Seems to have that effortless attitude of "oh, hell, I'm up here, I might as well slam it."
@konkeyDong great info, but too soon. :-)
@drgnslayr I think we all saw what Perry Ellis can do in that 5 game stretch before he hurt his knee. In the last game of that stretch against Texas (28 pts, 13 rebounds) he was unstoppable. He was averaging 22.4 ppg over those five games, throwing down dunks like I do on the 8.5' rim in my driveway.
Perry is the key. I expect him to average around 20 ppg, but still get outrebounded by Mason once in a while.
@JayHawkFanToo Cole was not a quality player as a freshman. Neither was TRob (two fouls taking off his warmup to check in), or lost Withey his first year, or almost any other first year player at KU. Freshmen generally stink. That's not a knock on the players those guys became after a year or two (or sometimes RARELY even during the season), but "quality" and "playing time" are actually pretty much the same thing on Bill Self teams*.
*other than Brady
Good lord, yahoo is a cesspool of trolls and morons.
I was guilty of a lane violation while watching Cole was shooting his free throws.
Appreciate your efforts on this, stat. I sure don't have the energy to filter through the noise, BS and hype on the recruiting stuff, but it's been fun following what you've been posting from a pro-KU perspective.
@clevelandjayhawk Very nice! Are you a home brewer? Those gold caps look like the ones I use.
As I watched from many miles away during those years, I remember her sitting behind the home bench and always wondered who she was. I can't believe I never figured out it was Tyrel's sis. Duh.
For those interested...
I'm awaiting Cafe Press approval on a couple of T-shirt designs. I'll post links in a separate thread once they are available for sale.
Looks like they'll be $24. Depending on quantity, it would be a lot cheaper to print these locally, but this way (using cafe press) no one has to deal with inventory, shipping and all that crap. I'll donate the 5% commission per shirt to the Lawrence Humane Society in the name of kubuckets.com.

June 1965. I turn 50 in about 47 days. Had big plans to run a marathon to celebrate, but about a week ago, my knees started encouraging me to sit out on my back deck and enjoy the best Belgian beer I can get my hands on instead. Kind of a bummer, but I'm satisfied with the backup plan.
@Crimsonorblue22 Probably right. I forgot about his daughter and all.
Naadir Tharpe is eligible. Born July 23, 1991. American, despite the weird name.
I wouldn't half mind it if Self gave him a shot.
I'll dig out the shirt designs and put a couple on cafe press in the next couple of days. I did a test print last fall and the half-tone of Naismith looked like crap, so I need to do a better rendering. Shirt quality was nice.
@approxinfinity (Way up at the top) Tennessee was Adidas during Cuonzo Martin. They just switched to Nike this past year.
I suppose that supports the shoe theory... Cuonzo hauls in better players with the right shoes... and a better school in a better location.
Man, this season has been a blast. I was at the game thursday night sitting right behind the guy that got nailed in the thigh by Moose's foul ball down left field in the 8th. Pretty nice bruise--could see the stitch pattern! Perfect night otherwise--Duffy pitched great, perfect weather, lots of runs, a couple incredible catches in the outfield. Even found the car fairly quickly.
BTW, you guys need to start a new baseball thread. It took me about five minutes to scroll all the way to the bottom. LOL.
I'm with Moonwalk. I lived in NE Ohio for several years and never met a single person who didn't root for the Buckeyes in FB and BB. There is also a very loyal local following for LESSER local teams they followed (Cinci, X, Kent State, YSU, Toledo, etc,), but there is no significant in-state competition/rivalry with OSU, at all. The regional following is kind of like minor league baseball, but the entire state shares a hatred for Michigan, and that's it. You might find a few transplants that don't like OSU, but for a state that size, the population is overwhelmingly in love with one school.
Most Ohioans would prefer the OSU BB team be better, of course, so they're supportive of the ugly sisters like Cinci and Dayton when they are successful.
