@justanotherfan But you would think after 3 years he would know to stay outside instead of trying to bang with guys bigger than him. Does Self not tell him this?
@drgnslayr You would think that at some point the coaches would tell him that.
@ralster I have to disagree with you on this one. Go back and watch their games versus K State that year and at Texas. They laid a big fat egg against UNI. Had nothing to do with injuries, they just weren't ready to go.
@benshawks08 wish Self would have tried to run Northern Iowa and Stanford out of the gym. Hopefully we never have a repeat of those games again.
@justanotherfan Excellent observation. Wayne is definitely playing with much more passion.
@ralster I am fine if he leaves if he leads the team to a final four and championship!
@HawkInMizery Bring on Kentucky!
@drgnslayr He will be invaluable for our guards, hopefully similar to how Danny was.
@jayhawk-007 Excellent post. This team, if they run smart ball on offense, will have a chance to play for the championship in April.
@KUSTEVE I agree - we probably would have lost to Vanderbilt last year.
@DoubleDD Good point. Now some point to the 2008 team as having several "lucky" breaks, but there are teams every year that do not necessarily require numerous highly fortuitous circumstances to win. Like you said, it is all about playing your own game.
@KUSTEVE Jay Williams also picked KU to win it all with Diallo. Can't wait to see him play Tuesday.
@joeloveshawks He still needs to utilize his great perimeter skill against taller teams. Watching Gonzaga right now, he would definitely need to use his great outside shooting instead of trying to post up.
@Hawk8086 You are correct. Last night's game could have been a replay of the Stanford game, but Self finally let them play outside in.
@HighEliteMajor Why don't you call in to Hawk Talk and ask Self some questions about this?
@DoubleDD Yes, definitely no bad ball, especially in the second half.
@BeddieKU23 Glad to see the team come out with much more focus. Was starting to think it was going to be MSU all over again.
@Bwag Ellis needs to play outside in.
@drgnslayr I agree. I think his motor and effort will definitely have an impact and he has plenty of time before conference season to get comfortable.
@BeddieKU23 still a lot of time left. They need to keep their foot on the gas.
@Texas-Hawk-10 sorry, poor attempt at being sarcastic also
@Kip_McSmithers it is never a bad idea to actually be informed on a topic before putting your opinion out there. So, I would suggest reading the various news articles on this before making another comment.
@nuleafjhawk AMEN!!!!!
@ralster Just another disappointing aspect of the last few seasons. Willy Self needs to get things together.
@Bosthawk we want him to play because he can actually make layups, has a mid range jumper, and is a pretty good rim protector. No disrespect intended to Landen, but he can't do any of those things.
@RockChalkinTexas I get that it is only the second game of the year, but what makes you think that there will be any improvement? This looks like the same team from the past two seasons.
@drgnslayr If the whooping they received last year from UK and WSU haven't motivated them, I don't know what it will take.
@MoonwalkMafia I agree. The offense is sluggish and defense appears inept at times.
Slayer, I have been hoping that this team will develop a chip, but I am not sure what it is going to take. The treeream takes on the attitude of the coach, and I am wondering if Self's best coaching years are behind him.
Yep. 100% on Coach Self. It is like he has a prejudice against Hunter.
@cragarhawk That is my opinion also. Exact same team as last year.
@Bwag Yep. I was watching UK and was impressed with what Cal does with freshman. He is better at getting his players ready and playing defense well. Been that way the last five years. Self needs to take notice.
I think KU by 10 - 15 if Self lets them run and gun. KU in a nailbiter if he doesnt.
@drgnslayr Great suggestion on how to get the MSU bugs into foul trouble. That and offensive motion are how the game will be won.
@drgnslayr I definitely hope you are right slayr. I was surprised at how much energy he had Friday. Hope he continues that moving forward.
@JayHawkFanToo For sure, the other top teams weren't exactly great last night other than maybe UNC. Ku is definitely in a position to make a run this year as long as they keep focusing on getting better.
That game in January is going to be very tough.
@justanotherfan "If you aren't studying the success of your opponents, you are falling behind, whether in basketball or in any other profession."
You stealing all my lines man? Lol
@justanotherfan Exactly. Self's teams (specifically in '10 and '11) have a tendency to freeze up in the tournament and appear lackadaisical. Calipari seems to have them focused for the tournament, and does a better job of that than Self. I don't mean to compare the two, but sometimes it is good to evaluate how others are achieving success in order to better ourselves.
@justanotherfan Excellent analysis. Self should have two or three more final fours and possibly another title. He would rather lose early in the tournament playing his system then to change it to fit his personnel and possibly advance.
@Lulufulu Cal has had inexperienced swell and still produces. You can't deny that when Cal has talent, freshman or not, he gets the job done, something Self rarely does even with very talented teams. The reason is inflexibility. Unfortunately, that does not seem to be changing in the near future.
About a week and a half ago, I was watching Sports Sunday on KWCH and the panel was discussing how Kansas +2 won the WUG and comparing how good WSU and KU were going to be. To my amazement, good ole' Jeffrey Parsons thinks WSU will be better. He is probably basing this on last year, but as everyone knows, a lot can happen in a year. Does anyone honestly believe WSU will be better? I guess I have a hard time envisioning that.
@KUSTEVE Yes, this is definitely a championship caliber team.
@ralster Excellent post. I honestly don't understand what some people saw in Nic Moore that was that impressive. The only thing that Moore might have on Devonte is leadership. Comparing freshman Devonte to Moore in the WUG, there isn't really anything that Moore does better.
Selden will play the 3 spot this year and frank and devonte will most likely be the starting 1 and 2. Self would be crazy to even consider moving Selden back to the 2 spot. Svi will probably sub for Devonte and Wayne, as he can play the 1-3. Just my opinion.
@drgnslayr I agree. Right now, toughness, effort and rim protection are more important than back to the basket scoring. As he improves, it will come along.
@BeddieKU23 I think he is farther along offensively that what he gets credited for.
Maybe we'll be able to do what Kentucky did this last year and have an advantage by playing against international competition. Certainly couldn't hurt.
@dylans I completely forgot that the Jordan brand classic was on tonight. Even though it is just an all star game, 26 and 11 is still really solid.
@jaybate-1.0 Agreed about having several near footers, though Diallo is a rim protector and is close to being a near footer because of his 7 - 4 wingspan.
