I find it interesting that #ksleg will pass out of #k12educationcommitte a bill that has over 70 opponent testimony and 4 proponent. That’s listening to Kansans!
They were allowing proponents more time to speak too. Most were out of state. A senator on the committee said she didn't want to hear from the out of staters.

HB 2662 is the bill, and yeah, it's bad. I don't mind the transparency stuff. All my course materials and syllabi are public record and posted on a website. All part of the gig.

The rest of it is a trash fire. Parents shouldn't be able to unilaterally get books removed from the school library or dictate what goes into them. They're repositories of knowledge, not political statements. Section 4 of the bill is the worst part. It effectively criminalizes teaching certain things or to quote, "Display material that is harmful to minors." Which the bill defines as, "...that quality of any description, exhibition, presentation or representation, in whatever form, of nudity, sexual conduct, sexual excitement or sadomasochistic abuse when the material or performance, taken as a whole or, with respect to a prosecution for an act described by subsection (a)(1), that portion of the material that was actually exposed to the view of minors, has the following characteristics:
(A) The average adult person applying contemporary community standards would find that the material or performance has a predominant tendency to appeal to a prurient interest in sex to minors;
(B) the average adult person applying contemporary community standards would find that the material or performance depicts or describes nudity, sexual conduct, sexual excitement or sadomasochistic abuse in a manner that is patently offensive to prevailing standards in the adult community with respect to what is suitable for minors; and
(C) a reasonable person would find that the material or performance lacks serious literary, scientific, educational, artistic or political value for minors."

It also applies to professors. Which, it's certainly possible to have minors in a college classroom or taking college courses. I had 45 hours going into my undergraduate degree. I'm almost always down with bills that enable greater school choice for parents, but this is has nothing to do with that. This is a gag order.

@approxinfinity yes, districts are allowed to set their own transfer capacity. Which makes it even more “stay out, poors.” Worth noting 47 states have some kind of open enrollment policy, including Kansas. This changes it from optional (districts can agree to take each other’s students) to mandatory.

Not sure what it currently looks like legislatively but certainly feels like public education is in some serious jeopardy at the moment. The pandemic only widened existing inequities and some states are making it nearly impossible for anyone with a brain to want to teach.

Certainly a shifting landscape. I've been tracking changes in traditional public school (TPS) enrollment for awhile and it's astonishing how many families have up and quit the TPS system. Last I saw it was about 1.5 million. Every state I have data lost TPS students. Utah was flat but slightly down, some states lost 6%+ TPS enrollment.

Homeschooling about doubled, and charters gained about 250,000 students. NCES doesn't have private school enrollment past 2019 yet so that's hard to say, but my feeling is that it went up, but not to its peak 20 years ago.

Pull the plug on Hubert, UNC. He’s a great dude but it isn’t working. Offer Wright $10m a year and make him say no. If he does, offer $12m.

I'm not going to do much commentary on the underlying proposed legislation, but this statement from BV and Olathe is legit hilarious."Without intending to sound elitist..." * proceeds to sound SUPER elitist *

Then right below this jewell they list district ACT and SAT scores compared to the poors in the rest of the state. It's so, so good. And in no way any kind of dog whistle no sir not at all. !079c9246-66dc-4f20-92d8-9a6dff2d9b7f-image.png ↗

I’m gonna go out on a limb and say Remy will win us a game or two we shouldn’t by providing a big spark and taking games over

This seems like such an obvious limb based on his reputation coming in but we’ve seen none of that here.

Could be a situation like Conner frankamp got in the tournament when no one could score. Self put him out there and said chuck it. That’s the only way I see him getting meaningful minutes from here on out and if that’s the case we are already in trouble.

Only a limb because I think the most likely outcome is he’s shut it down for the year and Self and Remy are just saving face right now.

Sure looking like 13-5 gets this done. So all we have to do is 4-3 down the stretch. Still have KSU and OSU at home, two against TCU, and at WVU. I sure hope we can get 4 of those. Should beat Texas at AFH too. At Waco is gravy

Have the Olympics lost their luster? • Feb 09, 2022 09:38 PM

@benshawks08 said in Have the Olympics lost their luster?:

@Kcmatt7 said in Have the Olympics lost their luster?:

@BeddieKU23 This.

This Winter Olympics being held where it is has made it an issue. It is being politicized like crazy and people are trying to avoid seeing any of that stupid ish.

Then you have Covid, so people aren't there in person.

There will be a great revival of the olympics, my guess is in LA in 2028. Just my guess, but by then things should be "normal" plus you'll see some American heroes made on home turf. Watching these events with basically no crowd takes the air out of it. Felt the same thing when pro and college sports were being played in empty arenas.

I’ve heard compelling arguments that we should do away with the Olympic selection committee and just move it to Athens for every event. All the evidence shows most cities end up spending more than they make back and all these new facilities are built then underutilized.

I think there's a lot to this. And so the result is the only governments that are interested in hosting (especially winter) games are those that don't have to make any money and aren't acceptable to the people. So this is how we end up with winter games in noted winter destination... Beijing.

The other part of it, at least to me, is Olympics fatigue. We just had the summer games less than a year ago. And let's be honest, none of us really watch Olympic sports unless they're in the Olympics. Hockey, soccer, and baseball are exceptions. But nobody is firing up the tv on a Sunday afternoon to watch figure skating. So take away the anticipation of Olympics and couple that with the really crappy atmosphere and gross feeling of watching them in China and you get meh.

@benshawks08 said in Big 12 Regular Season Title (if that still matters to you):

?s=21

An interesting read about another team that dominates in conference.

Particularly liked the concept that Gonzaga has the best record of any team against the top six conferences and still loses 20% of those games which means winning 6 in a row vs quality opponents (needed for a national championship) is almost always a long shot for EVERY team.

It's wild, if you have a 90% chance of winning each game individually, you're only a coin flip to win all 6. At 80%, you'll only pull it off about 25% of the time. Say you're a 1 seed and the first game is a gimme and you're a 90% favorite in the remaining 5, you'll cut down the nets 60% of the time, 1/3 of the time if an 80% favorite. S/O to Prof. Haug at KU for drilling probability into my head. DSCI 202 can still GTH

Should be a big ass fine for Arkansas. Dangerous situation cutting the lights during a court storm

So let the rumors begin. • Feb 08, 2022 07:47 PM

KU hasn't finalized any details of it yet, all is speculation at this point. I know for sure is that it's a top priority for Girod and Goff, and likely to be announced next fall sometime along with a comprehensive capital campaign through the Endowment.
