2016 Resolutions • Dec 30, 2015 09:11 PM

As the midnight hour approaches on 2015 and while some will gather the champagne and others fireworks or tannerite

It's also time to make a resolution for the new year. Yes everyone wants to lose weight or make themselves better. That's old school.

Let's talk this over as the Kansas fans we are.

I for one have decided to be more of a fan than a fanatic. To watch the games with a joyful eye and not be puckered up.

What is your resolution(s)?

I'm feeling Reality • Dec 30, 2015 04:57 PM

@HighEliteMajor wasn't only LL that got sealed off in the post. Hunter did as well and JT basically got pushed out of bounds.

They weren't only taller by a long ways but they were thicker guys full of muscle and knew how to use it.

I keep laughing at how Diallo was the MVP of the Mds AA game. We are talking about a game where no one plays D.

I want to see him and Bragg succeed. Not for future recruits to see but as players and men as well.

You ask can Kansas win it all without Diallo and Bragg and going with the three elders. Probably not. Then again Kansas isn't going to win a title without any of those three elders either.

It's a team game. With everyone playing together and as a solid group this years team and rotations can win. The different players in the post can cause a lot of match up issues with opposing teams.

I'm feeling Reality • Dec 30, 2015 03:08 PM

@justanotherfan I hear what you are saying but there was a glaring play towards the end of the first half that Diallo and Bragg both defended a guy on the block as everyone else rotated to cover the other post player for UCI was wide open at the top of the key. Even once the ball went to him neither Diallo of Bragg even attempted to close out on him.

He nailed a three.

Team D isn't possible of one or two guys aren't moving the way they are supposed to. The guards did what they were supossed to do on the double team. The covered the wings out along the 3pt line. Once the ball comes out of the double one of those bugs has to rotate up and at least attempt to close out.

To me that is the definition of a liability on D.

If they are doing that in practice and Self and staff are seeing that happen it would explain why they aren't getting the minutes that everyone is wanting to see.

If they get it sooner than later then they will play more mins sooner than later.

I'm feeling Reality • Dec 30, 2015 02:52 PM

@jayballer54 In football they say if you have a dual QB system you do not have a QB in Reality.

I believe in our situation this year at the 5 spot we do not have a starting center. But we can start different guys depending on what we are going up against.

Big and long teams Licas and Hunter give us our best bet.

Quick and skinny teams Traylor gives us the best bet on D until Brsgg and Diaalo learn to switch and talk on D.

Offensively Diallo probably gives us our best scoring option. But offense only gets you to championships. Defense wins it. He's a liability on D as much as Traylor can be on offense, limited but serviceable.

With these 5 we can keep the energy level high. Legs fresh. Can throw different wrinkles in our offense for each one of them.

Oh and if all else fails for these guys we've got 24 fouls to give before we lose all of them.

C5 struggles but finishes 21/11 • Dec 30, 2015 02:27 PM

If I had to rank the C5

1 Lucas clearly the best overall of the composite. Held his ground on the low post D and he dunked. Multiple times!!

  1. Hunter and he wasn't far behind LL but his silly foul of tackling a guy dropped him down. He ran the floor well and was rewarded.

  2. 3a Diallo. Limited minutes but scored while in the game. His D was horrible at best. Doesn't talk on the floor for a guy who speaks 4 languages he needs to communicate batter on D.

4 or 3b. Traylor. Nothing spectacular. Nothing too horrible. Got pushed around a little on D but was the only guy who took a shot from the ft line in the sweet spot of the zone. Bonus point there.

  1. Bragg. Wow terrible D. Non existent on O. Wasn't his best showing by far. There was a reason him and Diallo sat most of the second half.

Perry's first half was bad. Even the announcers commented on how he she's away from bigger defenders. I agree with them that Self pulled him aside at half time and in my opinion may have reached up and pulled Perrys head out. Great second half though and the Perry we are used to seeing.

Wiggs • Dec 30, 2015 01:51 AM

As impressive as it is "youngest" is not a good standard for ranking how fast a player scored 2000 points.

Kobe, Howard and LBJ all were in the NBA at age 18. Melo, KS and Wiggins are all OADs.

Kareem sat his freshman year and played three at UCLA after that. How many games did it take him to score 2000?

MJ played three years at UNC before leaving early. How many games did he take to score 2000?

Wilt? Russell? Maravich? Bird? And the list could go on.

I just wish they would use the number of games to rank these achievements and not date of birth. That skews it to different andwers.

Any how Congrats to Mr. Wiggins

@REHawk ESPN has finally taken it off the shelf and will air it on espn2.
In my opinion it should be on ESPN!

Any title game in a major D1 sport should be aired on the top channel. They air softball on both ESPN and espn2. Baseball ESPN. Heck the little lesgue World Series gets ABC.

Why not Volleyball?

Maybe ESPN should go to Drnver or even Orlando and see how popular volleyball is. There are so many competitive club teams in these national and or regional tournaments. All ages 12 years old to 18. Hundreds of teams in each age group. Games going on so many courts it's hard to count. From sun up til they are done each day.

Living in a house divided tonight. Wife and one daughter will be cheering for the Huskers. While another daughter and I will be cheering on the Jayhawks!!!!

Due to reasons beyond my own control wasn't able to see much of the last game. Wasn't able to stay on line and read much either.

Now that things are a little clearer, what did I miss in that game besides only using one sub in the second half?

What is there to expect this week vs Montana? Will Diallo get the start and Bragg off the bench again? Or does Bragg get the start and then the best guy starts against San Diego?

Thoughts. Insights. Opinions?

Thanks Buckets crew

KU VOLLEYBALL FINAL FOUR! • Dec 16, 2015 03:29 PM

It's a tough ticket to get up here in Omaha. Wife's boss is a season ticket holder to Nebraska volleyball, they got their 4 back in September, but when they applied for 4 more they were put on a very long waiting list.
The lower bowl has no seats available online at the centrylink center as of Monday.
Should be 17,000 plus fans there Thursday. 80% probably in red. That's the way it was a few years back when it was hosted by Creighton in the same building.

I saw somewhere were Kansas is 0-83 versus Nebraska in VB. They are due for a win!!!!!!

Rock Chalk Jayhawk

On a side note, if KU wins Thursday, there will be tickets available for Saturdays game, not a lot though. People up here love their Volleyball.

Very arrogent. Very one side coverage.

ISU getting whipped at home • Dec 11, 2015 05:28 PM

@RockChalkinTexas
My guess is that since he's a beat reporter for the teams at ISU, that if he blames the school for not protecting him they don't give him info or insight.

Or they paid him off??

Just conjecture on my behalf. Who really knows.

Of course if this guy a "prominent booster" can go straight towards a coach why shouldn't they be able to storm the court?

If Iowa would have won the game would the ISU fans have gotten on Twitter and in their trucks to chase the bus down?

So this is not an isolated incident. This is a common occurrence of lack or caring about the opposing schools.

ISU getting whipped at home • Dec 11, 2015 03:17 AM

@jayballer54 remember that one time at Allen Field House, it was the last time Kansas played bitter rival Missouri.

Yeah that's the one.

Tensions were high. Pride and bragging rights on the line as they cowardly left the Big12 and 105 years of history behind.

Yeah that's the one.

Where Kansas found themselves down 19 points in the second half. Conner Teahan made 4 of 4 from 3 point range.

Yeah that one.

The one where Tyshawn Taylor scored 24 points while Thomas Robinson got a double double with 28 and 12 with one of the most memorable blocks in the Filed House history.

Yeah that one.

The one where Kansas 4 won in overtime by a point 87-86 over bitter rival and higher ranked Missouri #3.

Yeah that one.

No one. Not one Kansas fan stepped foot on James Naismith Court. Security didn't have to hold them back. Players didn't have to hold their ground as their college classmates ran across the floor in a flood of bodies.

Yeah that one.

@wrwlumpy wait which "famous beavers" are you using now?

@KUSTEVE pesky but yet beneficial to the eco system.

There offense is all Gary Payton II. 16 pts. 8 rebs and almost 5 ast a game so far.

Should keep our gaurds busy

@jaybate-1.0 That was part of Popovich's quote about the 3 being a circus.

Post Game, Thoughts • Dec 10, 2015 04:35 PM

@DoubleDD I don't mind it either just as long as the other 4 guys rotate and play help D.

If one guy doesn't help out or rotate over you are giving up a dunk or layup.

But the payoff can be rewarded with our own layups and dunks. Plus it takes time off the shortened shot clock. Towards the end of the season that won't be as big of a factor but for now it is.

@Second-Prize saw that. "Why not have a 5 point shot or a 7?"

The Easy Button • Dec 10, 2015 04:23 PM

@KUinLA let's not forget last year Green was used to help break presses and being the ball up the court. He did fine in the open court. It also gave KU a great FT shooter late in games.

Ray Aleen was never a great ball handler and he did just fine when he needed to dribble.

Neither was/is great at it when a guy is right in their face though.

The Easy Button • Dec 10, 2015 03:18 PM

@justanotherfan or that small mid major team in the second round of the dance?

The Easy Button • Dec 10, 2015 03:15 PM

@justanotherfan imagine the 4 headed beast of Mason Graham Selden and either Greene or Svi along with Ellis on the floor.

Small. Quick to extreme fast and anyone of them could pull the trigger from anywhere on the floor.

Might make it hard on D on us but late game scenerio where you are subbing offense for defense and visa versa.

The Easy Button • Dec 10, 2015 03:04 PM

@BeddieKU23 said.

He started Mickelson and he was active, doing all the things required of him in his spot. Other than scoring I thought he showed exactly what Self wanted out of that position. Enough so that you start him Saturday because I believe he earned it. He took the opportunity and didn't disapoint.

I agree Hunter should get another rip at starting. I posted in another thread about starters for last nights game that Hunter would get one start then Bragg then Diallo.

After last night not sure when Bragg will get his shot. Maybe late February?

Diallo will probably get one bestie the new year begins if he gets a few things under control. But overall he deserves a shot with the other starters to go out there and see what happens.

Hunter needs to take it to the rim and see what happens. Perhaps get to the line. Or even take that 8 ft baseline jumper and make his man play honest D on him.

Post Game, Thoughts • Dec 10, 2015 02:33 PM

@ParisHawk yes. But they had an unfair advantage.
Wonder twin powers

The Easy Button • Dec 10, 2015 01:02 PM

@JayHawkFanToo he looked good all around last night.

He had a few dribble drives in a game earlier this year but his man was right up on him so he blew by him and drew the foul. I can't remember the game but did it twice and sunk his FTs

I liked how he passed back to Wayne and raised his hands for the made three as soon as it was released.

The play that ended the first half it looked as if he was standing flat footed after the missed lay up. But I have to think he was waiting for the lockout pass for the open three. He did hustle back on D though and was disruptive on the layup attempt.

Glad to have him back. Early too!!

DEVONTE STARTING TO MATCH FRANK. • Dec 10, 2015 12:35 PM

@wrwlumpy you are right he took the challenge given to him and not only accepted it but has probably blew it up.

Not only does his speed push the offense but puts a lot of pressure on the opposing D. His hands are quick and he is very disruptive on the perimeter.

That his basketball IQ is tremendous on both sides of the ball. He knows what other guys are to do in certain defensive sets, I saw him grab Bragg a few games back and get him to the right place, maybe it was because Bragg was in his way but still.

He is becoming the extension of coach on the floor.

The Easy Button • Dec 10, 2015 12:30 PM

@HighEliteMajor

2-5 Could this be Due to different styles of D as well? Man vs zone. Also shooting percentages from outside and FT shooting made a difference in the scoring in each game.

2-6 he is a genius based on he rested players versus a team that he knew he wouldn't need to use them. He had them there if he needed them but with the outside shooting as hot as it was.

3-2 ok here I will say it and open a bag of worms. But why is it OK for One player to be productive in some areas and not in others and it's great but others if they do things for the team but don't do other things deserve the bench? Hunter didn't score. Didn't get to the line. Sure he got a block or two. He was disruptive on D and altered shots. But his offensive game made it 4 on 5 he was not a threat.

With that said I want to see Hunter blow up and do great things giving the depth inside for a deep deep run for KU. But it can't just be Hunter, Bragg and Diallo for that depth to take us on that run. Both Lucas and Jamari (yes he has a name and is not a player to be named later or not named) to make that run.

2-4 This coming from a guy that uses "___" instead of Jamari Traylor. Still shaking my head at this one.

Post Game, Thoughts • Dec 10, 2015 12:15 PM

I'd like to see Diallo have more of a passing game. His only pass is the outlet pass after a defensive rebound.

He gets plenty of attention on the block that he needs to stop being a black hole and pass it to the open man in the corner.

Bragg has one pass on the offensive side and that's from the high post to low post. He makes it quick but HC picked one off easily and tipped another in a short span in the first half.

They aren't the only big ones with this issue as I have brought it up before about our bigs, including Ellis of never passing out of the paint or interior passing.

Gameday Ladies and Gents • Dec 10, 2015 12:10 PM

@Bwag Yes it was to the big donors sitting there and not getting into the game. But I think it may of had a double meaning as those are the ones who come out to the booster luncheons too and feel as if they have a say in what coach should be doing.

@jaybate-1.0 and here I thought the C3 was the composite of Selden, Svi and Greene at the 3.

@DoubleDD said:

So is Coach reading KUbuckets?

I'm in favor of playing Hunter, Bragg, and Diallo over Landon and Traylor. Yet I still think they should see some minutes.

I like the approach of using our depth to overwhelm opponents.

I believe they said earlier today they were both injured and would only play if they were needed.

He rested them, he has that luxury with depth at the 5 spot.

Allowed a lot of mins for others to do well or mess up or both.

HOLY CROSS CRUSADERS - Weds. 7 p.m. TWC • Dec 09, 2015 10:16 PM

@JayHawkFanToo had a friend in college, pure redhead and Irish. Last name O'Connor even.

He used to joke he thought the term "fighting Irish" was stereo typical and needed to be stopped.

Again he was joking until someone heard him at a bar and decided together they should go and put a stop to it and march to Notre Dame and cause a ruckus.

So we used to say that any team with "Fighting" should have to change it when we'd go watch the NCAA tournament at the bars.

@JRyman I think Self would love the comparison to Pop! Barkley? Maybe not so much! .

Self has acknowledged he needs to provide more opportunities but clarifies that he won't give up wins to do it. So if players want PT, know your ROLE and EXECUTE it.

Self would probably like a Barkley type on his team though.

Know your ROLE and EXECUTE it. Well said. Well put.

@jaybate-1.0 It was either last year or two years ago Spurs head coach Greg Popovich was asked about analytics. He laughed and said he doesn't have time for that and doesn't believe in them. That someone who isn't trying to save his job doesn't versus a guy trying to create a job. Something on those lines, much like what Barkley said.the article continued that even though Pops didn't like the analytics and such the Spurs were statically saber metrics wise the best team in the NBA.
This is from a coach who doesn't care about the stats as he will pull his starting 5 and out in 5 subs in not only for rest but to save a timeout and coach his team. Show them what they are doing wrong. His system seems to work pretty good.
