Who wins? - -Big 12/ Sec? • Jan 28, 2017 07:05 PM

WVU tried very hard to give the game away but ended up winning anyway. Too bad they did not extend the same courtesy to KU... :smiley:

I thought Shaq said he would like to see his kid go to Kentucky...maybe if he is like most typical teenagers, he will do the opposite and come to KU. :smirk:

@REHawk

Nobody gave KU a chance in '88 either...at most of the rounds, particularly in the Finals. KU came running off the gate and punched OU in the mouth and kept punching and now we have National Banner hanging at AFH. Vegas opened with UK a 5 point favorite and it is now 5-1/2; they don't seem to think it will be a blowout and they are seldom wrong. Never underestimate the motivation of the underdog. Just sayin'...

Bragg Suspended Again • Jan 27, 2017 07:27 PM

@Crimsonorblue22

You have it right. The presser was streamed live on Facebook and I watched most of it and Coach Self reacted very strongly to the insinuation that there might be a cover up; I have never seen him that upset, he really took it personally. I will guess that whatever the deal is with Bragg was learned after the press conference and Coach Self did not know about.

KU has a group of volunteers that is at every class players take making sure they go to class, so the coaching staff knows immediately if a player has or is cutting classes. If a player like Perry Ellis, which is/was an outstanding student, cuts a class or two it probably would not be a big deal, but if a student that is not dong well cuts classes, it would be since it could potentially affect eligibility and program academic goals. I know a few of the KU players are academic all conference but I don't have information on Bragg's academic standing, so I could not say one way or another.

Bragg Suspended Again • Jan 27, 2017 07:15 PM

@jayballer54

Again, unless you know for a fact it is a KU player, why even bring it up? I bet you a million to one that every single dorm at KU has lots and lots of drugs and drug paraphernalia and it is not a big deal anymore...in some states is not even a misdemeanor anymore. It was that way when I went to school a long, long time ago and it is even more prevalent now,. Should every student living in any dorm be considered a suspect just because there are some potheads living there as well? I think not and neither should be the basketball team players.

NBA GM's on KU's players for the draft. • Jan 27, 2017 07:04 PM

Interesting. They must have read my post where I compared Devonte to Mario; we have discussed before that he would inherit Mason's job and it would be his team...nothing new there. I don't necessarily agree with the characterization of Mason not being a great athlete; considering his size, he is a very good athlete and also an opportunistic one as shown by his knack for rebounding. an there is n0 mention of his outside shooting. I used to think that Mason did not have a shot in the NBA but now I think I could have been wrong about him; he has the skill and most of all the heart to make it at the next level .

The possibility/ negative effect • Jan 27, 2017 06:51 PM

@jayballer54

Maybe you should re-read your own post.

@BeddieKU23

I see what you are doing there...:smiley:

The NBA fines players for flops. The NCAA shoul review egregious flops like this and issue suspensions like they do with intentional fouls.

Bragg Suspended Again • Jan 27, 2017 05:30 PM

@REHawk

But, but, but....isn't Duke supposed to be the gold standard according to the main stream media?

I guess the sarcasm in my previous post did not come through...

The possibility/ negative effect • Jan 27, 2017 05:25 PM

@jayballer54

If this is the case, how can UNC ever recruit anyone with the massive grade fixing scandal? Or Louisville with a coach that bangs his assistant coach wife on a restaurant table and the staff hires strippers for recruits, or Calipari with not one but two vacated Final Fours, or Baylor with a laundry list of offenses, or...you get the point.

There is zero, nothing, nada, zilch evidence that any member of the program was involved in the alleged rape at the dorm they share with 24 other males that are not part of the program. Remember the team played in KC that evening and did not get back until long after the alleged rape took place.

Nothing personal but comments like yours do a lot of harm since you are assuming guilt without any evidence. I believe the players should all be given the presumption of innocent until proven guilty. I don't presume to speak for anyone other than myself.

Lightfoot Unleashed • Jan 27, 2017 05:06 PM

@jayballer54

I am not sure weight is an issue. At 6'8" and 210 pounds he's is only 10 pounds lighter than Perry Ellis or Jamari Traylor, or Justin Wesley, about the same weight Bragg was as a freshman and a whole 20 pounds heavier than Kevin Young, among other comparable players.

The main problems with Lightfoot is his lack of game time experience and sounds like this will be changing now.

I agree. It is all the senseless speculation that probably hurts more. So far, there no there...there...

The Streak Needs to End • Jan 27, 2017 04:41 PM

A pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity; an optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty. - Winston Churchill

“A leader must lead. Where others see obstacles, he must see opportunities. When others see problems, he must see possibilities ... Civilization is not built on a negation but on an affirmation- an affirmation of the bright and promising possibilities that the future holds for those who are enterprising enough to pursue them.” ― David J. Vaughan, Give Me Liberty: The Uncompromising Statesmanship of Patrick Henry

KU is the birthplace of college basketball and has been a leader ever since. The team has replaced all starters several times before and managed to overcome....this is what KU basketball is all about.

My question is: Would you like to be a member of the team that ends the streak? Any one that has played competitive sports will say....no! Ask any of the current players and they will all say...hell no!

I saw that....about time the NCAA starts doing something about flops.

Bragg Suspended Again • Jan 27, 2017 04:20 PM

So....he is suspended indefinitely which means he will be back for the Baylor game, right? After all Duke has established "indefinite" to mean 1 game and Duke and Coach K are the ultimate authority according to ESPN and the MSM...right?

Lunardi • Jan 27, 2017 05:43 AM

@drgnslayr

Look at how other teams a lot deeper than KU have fared. Duke has had injuries but they have plenty of depth and yet they have dropped like a rock, Creighton lost its top player and drop its two last games to unranked teams, the last one to Georgetown by 20 points. Indiana...their season went down the proverbial crapper and now has 7 losses. KU has remained remarkably steady and the loss at WVU, although painful, was not necessarily unexpected...most of us thought KU would likely lose at WVU, Baylor and probably one or two more so KU is still in good shape.

No question the loss of Bragg hurts KU seriously but it still is a very good team and not one...that would be lucky to get a 3 or 4 seed. KU does not need luck to be a 1 or 2 seed at this time, it has earned that seed and one loss will not make me belittle the team.

Bragg Suspended Again • Jan 27, 2017 04:38 AM

@jayballer54

If you follow what Coach Self says you would know that he is high on Lightfoot. Apparently he plays well In practice but has yet to take the next step up and deliver at game time. Once he does that he will be a contributor. Hopefully the team can take this setback and use it as motivation.

Bragg Suspended Again • Jan 27, 2017 04:04 AM

@Crimsonorblue22

He came so close last time one would think he learned his lesson. I dread learning what he did.

Lunardi • Jan 27, 2017 02:41 AM

@Lulufulu

So... you are saying that there are 16 teams better than KU? I am curious, where would you place UCLA that has lost 2 in a row and now sits in in 4th place in its conference or Duke that has lost 3 of the last 4 and sits in 9th place in the ACC with 5 loses or Kentucky that has 3 loses including one to unranked Tennessee? You realize that KU has lost only 1 game in the last 19 games and it was to a team ranked in the top 10 in most polls and #2 by Sagarin and #3 by Pomeroy, right? I understand hyperbole but your comment takes the term to a whole new level...in my opinion, of course. SMH.

Lunardi • Jan 26, 2017 11:54 PM

@KUSTEVE

I have to say that the Arizona-UCLA game had a ton of true future NBA players on the floor.

Interesting. In his presser Coach Self indicated he had talked to Fred Hoiberg about playing four guards and they have been watching tape of ISU and how they used Niang in the offense.

If alcohol was involved, the Royals can void the rest of his contract. If it was just an unfortunate accident, the Royals are responsible for the rest of the contract, although the contract itself, or most of it anyway, is insured.

Something in the Water? • Jan 26, 2017 11:26 PM

@BeddieKU23

So much parity in college basketball, this is why KU's streak of conference titles is so much more impressive than UCLA's which was done in a time when few teams dominated the sport.

Lunardi • Jan 26, 2017 11:21 PM

@Crimsonorblue22

Too much parity to have one game change much. KU lost to a very good WVU team, that happens to be a computer rankings darling, on the road. UCLA, the team many though was as close to unbeatable as it gets lost to Arizona at home and USC on the road in consecutive games now and sits in fourth place in the PAC 12.

Just negative pub • Jan 26, 2017 11:03 PM

@Crimsonorblue22

Good info which indicates it was unlikely a guest of a player. As I posted before, they probably had dinner after the game and did not get to Lawrence/dorm until close to midnight. Most likely scenario, they saw an argument as they were walking as a group into the building...it is possible that because the Bragg incident they were told to stay away from any arguments that did not directly involve the team and this is exactly what they did.

@Crimsonorblue22

That part was more for Jaybate and his unending quest for conspiracy theories...😎

Just negative pub • Jan 26, 2017 10:30 PM

@KUSTEVE

It was on a Saturday and KU was playing Davidson at 6:00 pm at the Sprint Center in KC so there is a good chance they soent Friday night in KC or the left early in the day Saturday for KC. Remember the run drill hours before the game and also have a shoot around before the game. Whatever they saw probably happened after they got back to Lawrence.

McCarthy Hall Rape Investigation • Jan 26, 2017 09:54 PM

@jaybate-1.0

Coach Self indicated he has zero information that would lead to a suspension of any player. This is serious sh#t and I seriously doubt he would said this unless he is convinced it does not involve a player or players; saying something he knows to be untrue would place him in legal jeopardy.

Just negative pub • Jan 26, 2017 09:47 PM

@jayballer54

@jayballer54

In his press conference ↗ Coach Self indicated that he had zero information that would lead to a player suspension. He also very forcefully rebuked a press member that implied there was a cover up. He also indicated that only 16 of the 40 or so "beds" available were taken by basketball players which leaves 24 other residents. The building has high security and you need to go through a fingerprint detector or be escorted into the building.

At this point we really do not have any information and all this guessing game does absolutely no good.

@Crimsonorblue22 @jaybate-1.0

I have to take Coach Self at his word. If he says Devonte was cramping then that is what happened. It would be silly for him to provide false information...a reasonable person would think....

@jaybate-1.0

In his press conference today, Coach Self indicated Devonte had cramps during the game, so itsi not an injury. Looks like that condition is not under control

@Kcmatt7

Kevin Kietzman and good job...isn't this the textbook definition of an oxymoron?

Lucas and Svi • Jan 26, 2017 09:26 AM

@TRUBLUE

Turnovers were not the reason why KU lost; it had only 13 which is lower than what it averages and less than half the turnovers WVU forces. Would you be surprised if I tell you that Mason had only 3 turnovers and Svi just 1? So much for that.

@jaybate-1.0

Both. I have seen badly refereed games and this is one of the worse I have seen. Several of the bad calls came when KU was getting some momentum and the calls killed it.

@jaybate-1.0

Obviously you did not watch the game. Would it surprise you that KU was only 3 points down with just over 6 minutes left and 8 points down with just over 2 minutes left? Unfortunately, every time KU got some momentum going throughout the game the refs managed to quash it down.

The trademark of the press defense is that it trades fouls for turnovers. When they do not get the turnover, it usually results in a foul due to the close contact with the offensive player. West Virginia scores one third of its points off turnovers. Last night, KU had only 13 turnovers which is way, way below the turnover that WVU opponents average, in comparison Baylor had 29 and lost OU 12 and KSU 16 and both won. Against KSU WVU had 30 fouls to 19 by KSU while it had only 18 to KU 22?...it just doesn't compute. Based on the low turnover number by KU, WVU should have had at least 30 fouls. No question that WVU got a very favorable whistle from the refs.

Crystal Ball Observations.... • Jan 26, 2017 05:40 AM

@mayjay @Blown

I think you are both half right. While a newbie pitched could learn about the various techniques by watching, it might not do him much good until he actually throws the ball and even then, he might never master it even with lots of practice.

Lucas and Svi • Jan 26, 2017 05:34 AM

If KU would have won the game last night would be even be discussing the failures and assigning blame?

"La victoria trova cento padri, e nessuno vuole riconoscere l'insuccesso" - Italian diplomat Count Ciano, in 1942

Or as we know it in English as quoted by President Kennedy... "Victory has 100 fathers and defeat is an orphan."

Give Self an incentive • Jan 26, 2017 05:16 AM

@wissox

If Coach Rat Face can pay the refs to give him the edge, one would think it is legal to pay them just to do their %^&%$ job.

Give Self an incentive • Jan 25, 2017 09:37 PM

I think KU would have much better luck dangling $25K in front of the refs so they just call the game even.

E X H A L E ! • Jan 25, 2017 09:34 PM

@BeddieKU23

I absolutely agree with you. The calls were not only bad but came at times when KU was building momentum. I always wonder how coaches such as Rat Face and Huggins don't get technicals when they are constantly getting on the refs faces. I wish Coach Self would have gotten in their faces and gottent a "T" just to send a message.

McCarthy Hall Rape Investigation • Jan 25, 2017 09:25 PM

That report leaves a lot of things in the air and it is misleading. The team was playing Davidson that night In Kansas City so it is highly unlikely the female in question was visiting any member of the team...since they would obviously not have been there. Most likely they saw something when they got back and were walking into the building. I suspect that after the Bragg fiasco they have been told to walk away from any situation that could be embarrassing and that is exactly what they did. After reading at least a dozen of stories on the subject, I just don't see it where any team member could have been involved other than as an observer after the fact.
