Sunflower Slaughter Game Thread • Jan 04, 2017 02:57 AM

I said before and I will say it again, KU has to stop spotting the other team a bunch of points at the start and then playing catch up...

@dylans

When Pekka came to KU he was an older player, 22 years old if I recall correctly, and was listed as a Junior. He played for professional teams before coming to KU and went back after one year to resume his pro career. He was a decent player and his numbers were enough to start but not to be a star. Mark Randall was the other big for that KU team and the better player without a doubt.

@mayjay

Of course. If you are applying for public defender in Johnson County, a Harvard degree will not help much. However, if you are applying to clerk for a Supreme Court Justice or a big law firm in a big city, a Harvard or Ivy League degree will make a huge difference.

No question the Catholic Church is the largest single denomination in the country; however, its political influence is limited. The only Catholic president, John Kennedy, was elected over 50 years ago and we have not had another since then.

Keep in mind that even great college players don't always make it to the NBA or an injury can end a career. Having a degree to fall back on is not a bad back up strategy and one from Duke is better than one from UK. As far as basketball, Duke and UK are at roughly the same level with perhaps the edge going to Duke because of Coach K.

I seem to remember mentioning at the time that he liked the value of a college degree or words to that effect but is could have been his father. Too busy to google it but sound a bout right; a degree from Duke is much more valuable than one from UK. He is one Duke player I wish would have played for KU, Singler being another.

Why do you think the NCAA would do this? Getting even for Alexander perhaps?

Mitch & Coleby • Jan 03, 2017 01:41 AM

@HighEliteMajor

I will guess that during practice is when Maxwell realized he was not up to KU's expected level to get the playing time he had hoped for. Players like Vang, Young, Self...or Maxwell have a very important role in practice since most of the time they play the role of the next opponent but are also aware than other than mop up time, they will not get meaningful minutes but they will always be able to say they played for KU. I guess Maxwell has bigger dreams; nothing wrong with dreaming big as long as it is a feasible dream and not just fantasy.

@Crimsonorblue22

Interesting change. However, our 4 outside guys will more than compensate for the lack of size inside.

Consistency: Josh vs Perry • Jan 03, 2017 01:28 AM

@mayjay

If your financial papers come from an African Country, chances are it will take the bank a long time to process them. So, if you know 3 years in advance that you will be applying for a loan, shouldn't you get all your paper work in order way before that time? I should know, I deal with a lot of overseas paperwork and the time it takes is hard to believe. In the 70's, a certified letter to South America would take 3-5 days, now it takes well over 30 days...I find it impossible to explain why but true. The NCAA notified him of the incomplete paperwork and it just took a long time to to get the proper paper work in place.

if I want to send a legal document to most any other country in the world, particularly third world countries, I need to have the document certified by a Notary Public, then the document is sent to Topeka so the Secretary of State of The State of Kansas certifies the signature of the Notary public, then it is sent to the Department of State so the US Secretary of State certifies the signature of the Kansas Secretary of State, then It is sent to the Consulate of the Country in question so it can certify the signature of the US Secretary of State; an even longer process is used for legal documents coming from overseas here.

Do you really believe the NCAA selected Diallo and KU specifically and delayer the paper work on purpose? I am as big of a KU homer as any one here and even I don't believe this is the case.

Bragg Bad? Numbers Say Not So Fast • Jan 02, 2017 11:52 PM

@Texas-Hawk-10

If Bragg played to the level we all expected him to play, KU would be playing a 3-2 instead of the 4-1. As @HighEliteMajor numbers show, it is not that he is playing poorly but more than the 4-1 is a much better option at this time and with the personnel available. If his game improves enough, I can see KU alternating between the 4-1 and the 3-2, particularly on a bad shooting day...

This is what I will be doing after the game...

I wonder how these kids handle the school work side. Most schools require that you complete at least 50%+ of the required coursework in residence and with that many transfers do they even graduate?

Virginia Tech - legit top 10 in BASKETBALL • Jan 02, 2017 11:31 PM

@drgnslayr

Two highly ranked players that Duke thought would deliver, Giles and Bolden, have played a combined total of 62 minutes and have been a non-factor so far. Had they produce to their projected potential, Duke would be dominating. In my opinion, the only player that has performed above expectations has been Kennard and possibly Tatum.

Bragg Bad? Numbers Say Not So Fast • Jan 02, 2017 11:22 PM

@HighEliteMajor

I believe the bad rep Bragg is getting is the result of high expectations. Everybody thought that this season he would dominate and he has not not done so; his numbers are good but not what was expected...unrealistically as it might have been.

Bragg Bad? Numbers Say Not So Fast • Jan 02, 2017 11:20 PM

@Texas-Hawk-10

When you look at rebounding margin, according to the NCAA site Indiana is #1, Texas Tech. #6, Baylor #18 and KU #29, so we will play at least 2 decent rebounding teams although Tech. does not have all the other needed tools but Baylor will be a load.

Crazy Start • Jan 02, 2017 11:06 PM

@REHawk

I really thought that OSU was going to play WVU tough and maybe win considering it was playing at home. I was surprised on how handily WVU beat them; at this point I am not sure if they are a good team or just another pretender. Don't forget they got trounced by UNC and also lost to Maryland by 1 point like KSU did. Their biggest wins are against UConn and Georgetown, both below average teams, and against a good Wichita State team.

Crazy Start • Jan 02, 2017 10:57 PM

@BeddieKU23

I always get a chuckle when I read deep analysis by someone that has really not watched conference games much and all they know is from reading someone else's stories. Seth Davis writes on all the conferences and also football so his knowledge on specific detail on any one sport and/or conference is sketchy and obviously dated at best.

Crazy Start • Jan 02, 2017 10:50 PM

@kjayhawks @Texas-Hawk-10

Again, I bunched 3 teams I believe are close together with the edge to ISU( that Has Hilton Coliseum), so the more realistic finish is either 5th or 6th and if you look at the order in which I placed them, 6th is more likely.

Having said that, I read lot of comment on how soft their schedule was and the real test would be when they play St, Louis, they did and beat them by 29 points. Their only loss is by 1 point to Maryland and before the Texas game, they won all the other games by considerable margins. I still think KSU is a borderline top half of the conference.

!image.png ↗

Can they continue playing the same way in the conference against better competition? After 1 game...I don't know and I qualified my post by saying is way too early for predictions, right? Again, with what I have seen to date a 5-6 finish in the conference is not unrealistic, considering how badly OSU was beaten at home by WVU, how Tech. let a game they had under control get away and how poorly OU and Texas have performed to date...of course we will know more after tomorrow's game.

Crazy Start • Jan 02, 2017 10:12 PM

@Texas-Hawk-10

I agree. we are just coming to the meat of the schedule and now we start to we separate the wheat from the chaff. Graham has an opportunity to show what he can do against better competition and there will be plenty of it ahead.

Crazy Start • Jan 02, 2017 10:03 PM

@kjayhawks said:

@JayHawkFanToo no way KSU ties for second in any league other than sunbelt

I believe you misread my post. I don't have KSU tied for second, I have KSU tied for 4th, which I indicated is a tossup with TCU and ISU with and edge to ISU (look at the order) which would make KSU either 5th or 6th...right? I stand by these numbers but we will know more tomorrow.

Thoughts on last nights game. • Jan 02, 2017 09:57 PM

@BeddieKU23 @BShark

Exactly. KSU was up 11 with 3 minutes left and basically coasted to the end; not unlike what KU has done at times...remember KU was up 11 points over Duke with 6-7 minutes left and let Duke back in the game, human nature perhaps?

In the old days before computers, wins and loses were mostly what counted; now, with the computerized rankings margin of victory counts a lot more, but in this generation of participation trophies, running up the score is considered bad etiquette and politically incorrect to beat up on weaker opponents. I say screw it, keep the pedal to the metal and run up the score, if they could do it to you they would any day of the week and twice on Sunday....now I am kidding of course...maybe? maybe not?

Thoughts on last nights game. • Jan 02, 2017 02:12 AM

@Crimsonorblue22

I sure hope not. I thought Josh learned from the Duke game but apparently forgot; I am sure Coach Self will have a "talk" with him.

Crazy Start • Jan 02, 2017 02:04 AM

@kjayhawks

Way too early to make predictions after just one game but this is how I see it:

    1. KU
    1. Tie - Baylor
    1. Tie - WVU
    1. Tie - ISU
    1. Tie - TCU
    1. Tie - KSU
    1. TT
    1. OSU
    1. OU
    1. Texas

Tossup between KU, Baylor and WVU with the edge to KU and the other two tied for second. Same thing between ISU, TCU and KSU with a slight edge to ISU.

Raiders v. Broncos • Jan 02, 2017 01:51 AM

Alex Smith had a very good game, On the interception the ball was tipped at the line of scrimmage; several Chief players had a shot at the runner but missed and he returned the interception 90 yards for a TD.

Thoughts on last nights game. • Jan 02, 2017 01:42 AM

@Hawk8086

TCU is a good team that will take advantage of what the competition gives it. They took advantage of KU poor defense and cold shooting and after KU took control, it never was able to put distance and they stayed in the game until the end.

Thoughts on last nights game. • Jan 01, 2017 08:38 PM

What we learned from the first look at the various conference teams.:+1:

Texas - KSU - Texas is without question the worst team in the conference. KSU is now potentially a top half team; Tuesday game at KU will tell how good or average they are; zero point from the KSU bench has to be a concern

Texas Tech. - ISU - Hilton proved to the be a tough place to play and ISU is desperately trying to hang on to the top half but I am not sure how it going to do considering the weak bench...9 point in 70 minutes combined by bench players will not cut it in a long season. Texas Tech. is improved but still bottom half team.

WVU - OSU - WSU is the real deal OSU got exposed.

Baylor - OU - Baylor is really good and withe WVU represent the top competition for KU. They had 6 players with more than 20 minutes and 3 more with double digit minutes; they have depth and they use it. OU continues its down slide and there are no signs it will get better; maybe a step above Texas.

KU - TCU - TCU is a much improved team and when they get in the zone they can stay with anyone. KU needs to stop spotting the other team points early in the game and then playing catch up. Graham and Brag with sub-par games and Jackson had perhaps his worst game as a Jayhawk. With all of that, it still managed to win but it cannot go through the season playing only 7 players or Jackson only 13 minutes; it needs to get some distance early and use the bench some more.

KU, WVU and Baylor are well ahead of the other teams with ISU, KSU and TCU trailing behind. With WVU and Baylor playing well, KU will really have to earn the title this year and it will not come easy. KU needs to hold serve at home, beat the teams it is supposed to beat and then steal one on the road from either Baylor or WVU.

Micah Downs had the worst case of missing the girlfriend, he left KU for Gonzaga because of her...I wonder if they stayed together.
