Sorry, should have said NBA instead of NCAA. Corrected now. Having said that, the NBA is free to do what it wants.

@justanotherfan

Isn't Ellis the textbook definition of a tweener β†—? While he can play the 3 and 4, he is too small to play the 4 and is not a proficient enough outside shooter to play the 3 in the NBA, of course. He is fine in college.

@wrwlumpy

I am not sure why MGM is involved. Isn't the school in question the one that would "own" the rights to the uniform? ...unless they sold those rights to MGM, of course...

@Crimsonorblue22

While I agree that it was nice thing to do, was it really something the NBA should have done? I am sure he is not the only athlete that has been unable to continue playing because of health issues but one with high visibility. Shouldn't the NBA the do the same thing for all others in the same situation? Do only high profile athletes in that situation get a guaranteed job offer? I am afraid it sets a precedent that would place the NBA in future potential liability when other players in similar situation ask for a guaranteed jobs.

I understand that Austin is finishing his degree and he is working as an assistant at Baylor; I believe that is the best way to go.

There is no reason why Embiid cannot come back to KU and finish his degree; there is no rule that the NCAA can enforce to prevent that. In fact, the NCAA has not standing if Embiid wants to come back and finish his degree.

Now, if he want to play BBall for KU again when he comes back, then the NCAA has standing and the authority to prevent him from doing so. Keep in mind that the NCAA is an organization that schools join voluntarily and by doing so they agree to follow its rules and regulations, The NCAA still requires that Athletes be amateurs and once they go pro, there is no going back. You cannot change he rules after the fact because they no longer suit you. When Embiid decided to go pro, he knew there was no comimg back and I just do not see any reason to change that. I understand that the NCAA is looking at changes in the rules that would allow athletes to come back to college after they declared for the draft but went undrafted, provide they did not sign with an agent or signed a pro-contract.

I remember the days when student went to college to...surprise, surprise... actually get a college degree and sports was just an extra-curricular activity and the school was not just a barely tolerated pit stop for top athletes on their way to the pros.

@justanotherfan

While Ellis is 4 in college, I personally don't see him playing that postilion in the NBA. The current 4s in the NBA are what we used to consider Centers and they are considerably taller and bigger than Ellis. If Ellis makes it to the NBA he will have to play the 3 and this is why he is now shooting a lot more 3s than he used to. To make it to the NBA, Ellis will have to overcome the dreaded "tweener" label.

I understand that Bragg is still growing and there is a chance that by the time he goes to the NBA he is 6'-10 or taller and he would be the perfect "stretch 4," since he seems to have a good outside shot; I just don't see him playing the 3 or 5 at the next level.

@REHawk

The tweener label is the kiss of death if you want to be drafted.

Tweeners work perfectly at the college level.

Tweeners tend not to do well in the NBA an thus they are frowned upon.

How Many Excuses For Wayne? β€’ Jul 20, 2015 09:54 PM

@Kcmatt7 @HighEliteMajor

I am not disagreeing with you and I believe we are basically on the same page, This is what I said:

Let’s face it, for whatever reason, be it youth, lack of strength or whatever, Svi was unable to secure a position in the rotation

Which given his lack of playing time we know it to be correct. I separated the game in two parts the physical part and the rest and maybe should have used three part instead. The physical, that Andrea will certainly improve, the mental component that age and the extra year will certainly help, and the basketball skills that hopefully have improved over last year and his potentially full set. of skills has developed enough to warrant playing time. Last year he did show flashes of his potential but we did not see him master one (or more) skill. In many ways, he is a jack of all trades, insofar as he does a lot of thing reasonably well, but he really is not, or at least he has not shown so far, IMHO, to be the master of one.

If Svi can put all the three parts of the game together, he can be indeed the player with the highest ceiling in the team, but as I indicated, we have yet to see this and this is why he is the biggest unknown in the team. He obviously has tantalizing potential and he could well be the star of the team or he could ride the pine...or more likely somewhere in between. At the end of last season, there is no question that Devonte was ahead of him in the rotation, and since this is the only frame or reference I have, I would have to say that Devonte would start ahead of him. Like I said, I have no clue on how much Svi has improved in the off-season and if he has done enough to overtake Graham. I just don't know and until the season starts, none of us really know it either. I would love to hear from any one that has any information on his progress; I don't recall seeing anything in this or other forums on his progress.

That's it. This is my story and I'm sticking to it...:)

@Kcmatt7

Yeap. They know a little bit about football up north...

CAN DEVONTE REPLACE NIC? β€’ Jul 20, 2015 07:05 PM

@jaybate-1.0

I posted this before...

From a pure basketball skill perspective Devonte is more that capable of replacing Nic, as I have posted before; he is not only the better athlete and shooter but considerably taller as well. However, the biggest asset that Nic brought to the table was leadership …and that comes not only naturally to some people (and not others) but also takes experience to develop it.

I am not sure I can add anything else...

@Kcmatt7

I agree, I really liked the big guy but in many ways, political correctness played a role and the "mean" coach had to go. In retrospective, his tenure seems even better since it was followed by the worst possible hire ever, Turner Gill.

Embiid β€’ Jul 20, 2015 06:42 PM

@Crimsonorblue22

Worst case he already has a contract that will pay him more than most people make in a lifetime.

@BeddieKU23

Sometimes the writing is on the wall and I would think that if KU saw that there were too many complication with Maker or he had already select another program, it decided it was better to spend the effort (and recruiting costs) on a more feasible player.

A while back there was talk that Maker would stall until he was able to go directly to the NBA and by-pass college all together and this is the reason why he went back to HS. Now, by the time the next NBA draft comes around, he will be 19 and he can claim his class graduated in 2015 and thus he becomes eligible for the draft....a distinct probability.

I was more surprised that Taurean Prince from Baylor was selected over Ric Suave. Also, Isaiah Cousins of Oklahoma and Fred VanVleet, who I thought pairs up so well with BRon Baker were cut

Pan American Men's Basketball Info and Schedule β€’ Jul 20, 2015 06:08 PM

@drgnslayr

Two players with Big 12 connections, Melvin Ejim and Brady Heslip are also playing for Canada. Of course the KU connection is strong with Langford playing and Tad Boyle as an Assistant Coach for the US and Kevin Young playing for Puerto Rico.

How Many Excuses For Wayne? β€’ Jul 20, 2015 06:01 PM

@drgnslayr

There is no question in my mind that Wayne found his optimal position at the 3. It is possible and maybe even likely that a the next level he might end up as SG, but at the present time, he is KU's best option at the 3. Even when he is playing with Mason/Graham and Svi, he will stay at the 3 since Svi appears to be better equipped to play the 2, i.e. better handler, better passer.

Having said that, and as I have mentioned in a previous post, the biggest unknown for next season is Svi. Let's face it, for whatever reason, be it youth, lack of strength or whatever, Svi was unable to secure a position in the rotation, even he was given plenty of playing time at the beginning of the season and he ended up #10 in MPG and the only players (in the current team) with less playing time were Mickelson. Self and Manning; makes you think, doesn't it? There is no question that Svi will need to have made huge progress in the off-season to secure substantial playing minutes.

I know many posters feel/believe that he will start at the 2; based on what I saw at the end of last season, I personally believe that Graham will starts at the 2....but then...Graham had an injury that limited his off-season play time and more importantly, we have no clue how much Svi has improved...I am sure that one off-season of conditioning with Andrea has improved hims physically but I don't know how much the basketball side has progressed.

How Many Excuses For Wayne? β€’ Jul 20, 2015 05:17 PM

@drgnslayr

Shouldn't the title be "reasons" instead of "excuses"?

@Crimsonorblue22

In all fairness, I ma not sure the Weiss hire was such a bad hire. No question that it did not worked out well, but on paper and given the KU had already been snubbed by other potential candidates, it was a defensible hire. Let;s face it, the FBall HC position is really not what up-and-coming coaches in high demand aspire to take. :( Now, BBall...that is the exact opposite. :)

@jaybate-1.0

If my numbers are correct Cuonzo was 124-82o or 0.601 prior to being hired by Cal; much higher than 0.560. Also, Montgomery was 0.640 at Cal in 6 season which is much lower than his overall percentage, particularly his previous stop at Stanford where he was 0.702 over 18 seasons. The concern is that the program was going in the wrong direction when 2 of the last 4 years they ended up at the NIT, not because the record was bad but because the conference was weak and send a small number of team to the dance, unlike other conferences like the Big 12. In his 6 years at Cal the team finished 3, 1, 4, 2, 2, 3...not really a bad record for school that has to play second fiddle to UCLA and Stanford.

@Texas-Hawk-10

Isn't that what I wrote in my post just above yours?

@jaybate-1.0

Help me, help me, help me, I think I’m going insane. [:-)]

Too late for that, that train already left the station..

Just kidding, of course. .:) :) :)

I think you are making it too complicated. Colleges hire the wrong coaches for the wrong reasons all the time. It has happened often in the past and it will continue to happen in the future. There is no rational explanation why anyone in his right mind would hire Quin Snyder over Bill Self and yet MU did...thank God for their stupidity. Don't forget that now, in addition to the BBall qualification, schools are required to consider the socio-political ramifications of all new hires. Every major program that has had a vacancy in the last few years has been approached by organizations urging them to interview "their" candidates and forcing schools to...well....I will leave it at that since I do not want to incur the wrath of the PC crowd.

CAN DEVONTE REPLACE NIC? β€’ Jul 19, 2015 11:03 PM

@Crimsonorblue22

Being a leader at boot camp and being a leader at game time are not quite the same. Much like in the military, many officers that are good leaders at boot camp are not very good leaders in combat.

@jaybate-1.0

Got it...but what coaches were those .560 new coaches replacing? Certainly not one with Self's record, right? Getting recruits is not all about the program; playing time and exposure play a big role. Kansas cannot offer the press exposure that the East or Southern-West coast can. Coach Self has been know to tell prospects that they will have to earn playing time but other coaches promise it freely and end having to "platoon" players...that dd not work out well for the squid.

More importantly, do you think Memphis will fire Pastner? I personally don't think that will happen.

CAN DEVONTE REPLACE NIC? β€’ Jul 19, 2015 08:17 PM

@ralster

I agree. From a pure basketball skill perspective Devonte is more that capable of replacing Nic, as I have posted before; he is not only the better athlete and shooter but considerably taller as well. However, the biggest asset that Nic brought to the table was leadership ...and that comes not only naturally to some people (and not others) but also takes experience to develop it.

@Statmachine

That article predicting the starters was written before the WUG and before Devonte's injury. After the WUG, there is absolutely zero doubt that Selden will start at the SF and not at the SG. The only question is whether Graham or Svi will start at SG. I just don't see Svi backing Mason since he is not a PG; I do see Graham switching to PG when Svi is in and Mason is resting.

@Texas-Hawk-10

Svi is not going to sub for Mason; he is not a PG and he has not show that he can be one. 6'-8" PGs are a rarity at any level and I just don't believe Svi is one of those rare super tall PGs. Svi's natural position is SG or SF and I will guess that he will play mostly those positions. I do not know how much he has developed in the Summer...I guess none of us knows, but based on what I saw at the end of last season, I would have to say that Devonte was ahead of him.

Quality Control β€’ Jul 19, 2015 07:52 PM

If Selden continues to play like he has in the WUG, he would not only be drafted, he would be a lottery pick.

So... what now? β€’ Jul 19, 2015 04:58 AM

@drgnslayr

The men's basketball portion start July 21st. Here is the site with the schedule for all the events. β†— ESPN2 has been showing the games all weekend.

@jaybate-1.0

Just curious. Where does the .560 number comes from and why do you think that a .560 coach would replace Pastner who has a .718 record at Memphis? Bo Ryan had the same issue (and blow back) from denying a player transfer and he survived and thrived. Just about every program, including KU, has players that transfer and it is really no longer a big deal. I personally don't think that Pastner will lose his job any time soon...but I could be wrong.

Memphis Fallout β€’ Jul 19, 2015 04:15 AM

@drgnslayr

Anderson finished 6th, 10th , 3rd, 5th, t5th at MU...a record pretty similar to Snyder and except for the #3 finish the others were pretty blah. In 13 years as head coach, he won one conference title (tied for 1st on his second year as coach) in Conference USA and has never won one again, not in the Big 12 and not in the SEC where his chance of winning a championship ahead of teams like UK and Florida seems unlikely. His overall record is 286–146 (.662) which is fairly pedestrian. As coaches go, I would call him a middle of the pack coach and definitely not elite.

Cheick Diallo β€’ Jul 18, 2015 06:55 PM

@JhawkAlum

Like I said, he scored fine at the Nike Hoops Summit where he played for the International team against the US team and it was a very competitive game. He also scored well at the All-Star games...I grant you that scoring at those games is wide open for the outside shooters as they are really not covered that closely, but the inside game is a lot more contested as players go against each other and they do not like to be embarrassed by the opposing player. Again, these are just my observations and I could be wrong but I suspect he will put figures comparable to Embiid, 11 and 8; we will know for sure in a few months...

Cheick Diallo β€’ Jul 18, 2015 04:46 PM

@Crimsonorblue22

That is a great observation. :+1:

Memphis Fallout β€’ Jul 18, 2015 04:40 PM

@Texas-Hawk-10

Does MU even have any players left on scholarship? No question that moving to the SEC sent a message that says we are a football school now and basketball is not important. Hiring incompetent after incompetent coach does not help either. Snyder was looking at MU as a stepping stone and the best finish MU had in the conference was tie for 5th and finished 11th in his last season. Anderson was/is a one trick pony and left the school when he saw the writing on the wall. Haith was by far the worst and led the team to the bottom and now Kim Anderson inherited a program in shambles and getting worse.

Just think that MU passed on Bill Self and hired pretty boy Snyder instead....they could have had Coach Self all these years and be on top of the college basketball world. This decision alone warrants their ongoing mediocrity.

@Statmachine

I am with @KUSTEVE on this one; I believe this is going to be the season when the basketball world takes notice of Devonte.

As far as Svi, if you have him playing that much at the 3 where do you have Selden playing? No question that the WUG proved that Selden belongs at the 3 where his performance was fantastic, even when at the next level he might end up playing the 2. Keep in mind that Green also plays the 3 and we might also see Vick and Ellis taking turns at the 3...it will be a crowded place.

@Statmachine

Svi is the biggest unknown. He started 6 games last season, same as Alexander. In comparison Traylor started 18 games and Lucas 14. Svi's minutes decreased as the season went on and he ended up 10th in the team in MPG and only Mickelson, Manning and Self (in the current team) played less minutes.

What position do you see him playing and how much playing time do you expect him to get?

Cheick Diallo β€’ Jul 18, 2015 06:47 AM

@JhawkAlum @Kcmatt7

I am not sure where the idea that he cannot score came from. While not a polished scorer due to his short time playing the sport, Cheick has shown he can score. He averaged 17.6 PPG and 10.5 RPG in HS, 16+ PPG anf 10+ RPG with his traveling team, 18 and 10 at the McDonalds All American game and 26 and 11 at the Jordan Classic. These numbers look pretty decent to me and I am curious why you think he does not have "offensive ability." Please note that his HS number are for a 34 game season and his traveling/AAU team played 16 games and I am not just citing his 2 All-Star games but season long averages.

As far as physical ability, Diallo is fairly similar to Alexander in build except all the scouting reports consider Diallo to be a superior athlete and a lot more athletic than Alexander.

No question that Mason is head and shoulders (no punt intended) better than he was last year. Keep in mind that in his freshman year he played behind Tharpe and the UK game was only his 2nd start of the season I teams and the previous year he had maybe a handful of starts? More specifically, I think he would do much, much better against last year's UK team, and he ismuch better, not necessarily because of that game, but because of his natural talent and overall development as a player.

WUG Stats And Comparisons β€’ Jul 17, 2015 05:00 PM

@Crimsonorblue22

I believe KU will have a better team than Kentucky this upcoming season. Too bad we don't play them in November (instead of the 3oth of January) when the roles would be reversed from last year. By the time UK plays KU, they will have played 12 non-conference games including UCLA,. ASU, Ohio State, Duke and Louisville before KU; no question a tough schedule. KU will play 9 non-conference games before Kentucky and the toughest ones will be Michigan State and San Diego State. However, they both will also have played 6-7 conference games and the Big 12 is considerably better than the SEC. No question that both teams will have plenty of experience by the time they play...trump card? AFH.

While Michelle Obama was not "officially" responsible for the new diet, the directive to the Navy came from the White House.according to many sources, and I don't believe the president, a known smoker, is necessarily into health eating, so guess who started the whole thing. The first lady has no authority over the school lunch program but there is absolutely zero doubt that she is the one behind that program implementation, right?

Snopes is very good at debunking the simpler stories, but they depend uniquely in "available/official" information and of course...Google; they do not necessarily look farther than that and they have been proven wrong on many occasions. I have looked up Snopes in the past as well as many other sites that claim to debunk urban legends and I personally seldom depend on just one site. When in doubt Google it and look at different sources and form your own opinion Not big deal either way, we can all draw our own conclusions and I respect yours all the same; just because we have different "opinions" does not mean that either is right...or wrong, just different, right?
