@BeddieKU23 @HighEliteMajor

It looks to me like a mental issue since he does not appear to have an injury. Coach Self appears to still have faith in him and he is getting playing time.

Coasting at this time would have dire consequences, unless he is planning on coming back, which is always a possibility. In the last few weeks he has played himself out of the first round and continued below average play will push him out of the draft altogether, not something any player would want even if planning on coming back.

KU needs him playing at a high level for the team to do well; obviously he is not the most important player on the team but a very key part of it; his level of play in the upcoming weeks might determine how well the team does and how far it advances.

Has our fanbase really got to this point? • Feb 05, 2018 04:18 PM

@Fightsongwriter

When you lose a lottery pick and best OAD ever at the program, the POY and an experienced, steady and smart 5th year senior....yes, rebuild year.

A couple of months ago I was very excited KU would be adding 3 top 40 players that would provide the badly needed depth. Preston would certainly be a starter, Cunliffe would provide 10 minutes a game and De Sousa would be a long term project that might contribute towards the end of the season.

Fast forward 2 months and Preston, the one who would be the biggest contributor is gone without playing a game, Cunliffe has underwhelmed and De Sousa is greener than I would have hoped given his experience with his national team and the game is still playing way too fast for him. In short, the 3 men addition that wold have pushed KU over the top has turned into a nothing burger.

If you want a decent college basketball movie, try One on One with Robie Benson and Annette O’Toole.

@drgnslayr

No problem. Wooden is always mentioned with the UCLA streak but as coaches go, Self has had that record for 2 years now and it is one that might never be broken.

It's NOW or Never.... • Feb 05, 2018 02:15 AM

@Texas-Hawk-10

The conference name did not change like it did when the Big 8 became the Big 12. Regardless, the fact is it took 3 coaches at UCLA while the KU and Gonzaga streaks are all under one coach. Having said that, the UCLA streak is still considered to be 13. If KU wins #14 the issue is really moot.

It's NOW or Never.... • Feb 04, 2018 09:36 PM

@drgnslayr

Wooden did not win 13 consecutive conference titles, UCLA did and that run was under 3 different coaches and on 2 conferences. The closest to Coach Self’s 13 titles is Mark Few at Gonzaga with 11 and that run was on the much weaker West Coast Conference where the only opposition is St. Mary’s.

Maybe KU can get Kevin Young, who is now playing for the Kansas City Tornados, to stop by and teach the current players how to rebound. He can probably use the extra income and KU players can definitely use any help they can get.

Kentucky loses to MU...not a good day to be a blue blood...

@kjayhawks

MU “fans” don’t cheer for MU, they cheer against teams they hate and this is why the arena was only full when they played KU and now UK...and does not even look full today.

Blown said:

Let down game. I saw this coming. And this is why I called this league (mediocre) average. Top team predictably loses at home to a bottom feeder

Duke just lost to St. John’s that is 0-11 in the Big East and 11-13 overall, what do you call the ACC?

Can’t wait to play on the road.🤬

Perfect storm good for OSU, perfect storm bad for KU.

That was huge, TO instead of 3.

Can anyone in this team block out? Just about every offensive rebound for OSU results in an easy put back.

@ParisHawk

The UCLA streak was under 3 coaches, Wooden, Bartow and Cunningham and 2 conferences, PAC 8 and PAC 10. The closer number is MarK Few and Gonzaga with 11 in a row albeit in the much weaker West Coast Conference with only Saint Mary’s as a half way decent rival.

@DoubleDD

I don’t agree with that. If the Chiefs had, not a great but an above average defense, say in the top third of the League, they are likely in the Super Bowl. If I recall correctly the defense finished ranked #28 out of 32 teams.

Smith was a great passer in college but had 6 different Offensive Coordinators in his first 6 years in the League. Since he joined the Chiefs, only Brady and Wilson have more wins as starting QBs than Smith. With a better team around him, he would have been as successful as Brady; this year alone, with a better defense the Chiefs are in the Super Bowl. BTW, this season he had the most passes for 50 yards or more in the NFL. Smith was not the reason why the Chiefs did not get to the Super Bowl.

RJ Hampton • Feb 01, 2018 05:57 PM

@Texas-Hawk-10

If everybody that is eligible to come back does, including Newman, Vick and Udoka, who do you see being in the starting 5?

Pro Jayhawk updates • Feb 01, 2018 05:32 PM

Embiid and Selden also had great outings with Selden leading all scorers. Marcus also had a good game but had a nasty fall after a dunk and had to leave the game. A good night for a Jayhawk players.

@justanotherfan

Actually is not algebra but trigonometry and I am very familiar with both. Also, I try to find the simpler solution; I am funny that way. You have a perfect reference line and plenty of objects of known length (players) to estimate the distance from the line to the shooter without having to resolve the hypotenuse of the right angle triangle using the Pythagorean theorem. Just my opinion.

We all agree that he is not stepping to the 3 point line and shooting from just outside the line like most players and he is shooting long 3s, primarily in the mid to upper 20s in my opinion or much longer in yours. I guess we can just agree to disagree.

Technical Questions about Zone Defense • Feb 01, 2018 04:21 PM

@BeddieKU23

Have to be careful to not overuse it otherwise oponents practice for it and becomes less effective. It worked well at KSU because it was unexpected and it was not ready for it; teams are now aware and likely be somewhat more ready for it, some more so than others.

@Jayballer54

Coleman’s missed FT and foul happened with over 2 minutes left and even after that, Texas went up by 5. Evans is the one that did them in by hitting 18-20 from the FT line including several at the end.

Oklahoma Whiz Kid Revisited • Feb 01, 2018 04:46 AM

@justanotherfan

IMHO, you are making the calculation too complicated. You have the 3 point as an ideal reference line since it Is a constant 20’-9” from the center of the rim until you get close to the corners when it is closer and we measuring the radius. All you have to to do is estimate the distance he is to the line and add 20’-9”.

I think we all agree they are long 3s, we just disagree on how long they are.

Tonights games • Feb 01, 2018 04:18 AM

Tech. missed the second FT with 3 seconds left. Game goes to OT.

Oklahoma Whiz Kid Revisited • Feb 01, 2018 02:04 AM

@dylans

The backboard is 4 feet from the baseline, the center of the rim is 1 foot further in from the backboard or 5 feet from the baseline. All shots are measured from the center of the rim not the baseline. The hash mark is 28 feet from the baseline or 23 feet from the center of the rim. If he is shooting even with the hash mark from the center portion of the court, that would be 23 foot and not a 28 foot shot. If you look at the NBA game in progress right now, you will see that the hash mark is just short of the 3 point line which in the NBA is 23’-9”.

I am not saying that he is not shooting long 3s, I am saying they are more like long NBA 3s in the mid to upper 20s rather than in the low 30s, that’s all.

Oklahoma Whiz Kid Revisited • Feb 01, 2018 01:06 AM

@justanotherfan

Just one correction...but a big one. You correctly indicated that the hash mark is 28' from the "baseline"; however, the backboard is inside the court and 4' from the baseline and the center of the rim is another foot further inside or app. 5' from the baseline. The 20'-9" distance to the 3 point line is measured from the center of the rim and not from the baseline, so your measurements are off by 5'. The 28' foot hash mark is really 23' from the center of the rim. Here is a schematic ↗ that confirms my numbers.

I finally understand.... • Jan 31, 2018 07:39 PM

@BShark

I did not say he was the best but the top ranked/rated QB.

@Big-Clyde52

A loos by Tech or WVU would seriously damage any chance they have to win the conference.

Manning is in the hot seat at WF. There was a lot of backlash when his contract was renewed and he needs to show significant progress next season or he will be gone.

I finally understand.... • Jan 31, 2018 07:22 PM

@BShark @mayjay

You don't like his price or that KC cannot afford him? He was the top ranked player in the League so logic dictates his salary would be high, right?

In my case it is not his salary, which I think he deserves, but the fact that KC can use that money more efficiently improving other areas such as the defense.

@wissox

Was that perhaps part of a deal when the conference added Maryland and Rutgers? Other than those teams and Penn State, the rest are Mid-West and a place like Chicago, Indianapolis, Columbus or even Minneapolis would be better choices...I would think...

Oklahoma Whiz Kid Revisited • Jan 31, 2018 07:06 PM

@REHawk

I saw that and I think there is waaaaaay too much hype. The 3 point line in college is 20'-9" and the NBA 23'-9" from the center of the rim. I saw a compilation of the long 3s he hit and the graph on the screen showed 32' or 33' that means means he was about 12' outside the college 3 point line...which he was not, he was a couple of feet outside of what would be the NBA line or about 6' outside the college line or 26' or 27;, perhaps a little more, but certainly not 32' or 33'; that is big difference. In comparison, the FT line is 15' from the backboard, double that distance and add another 3' and that is 33'...or maybe my eyes are playing tricks on me...:smiley:

I finally understand.... • Jan 31, 2018 06:35 PM

Interesting that Smith, a very steady and non-controversial player, could be such a polarizing figure; people either like him or they don't. I f you like Smith you probably think that the Chiefs should have kept him since he is a known and proven commodity, albeit an expensive one. If you don't then you are perfectly happy with the trade since it saves cap money, gets something of value in return, improves the defense which is dire need of an overhaul and starts the career of a promising and young QB.

Technical Questions about Zone Defense • Jan 31, 2018 06:20 PM

@KUSTEVE

Hybrid zone?

The Big 10 is down big time this season and a writer referred to it as the most boring conference in college basketball.

At this time, Purdue. MSU and OSU are locks for the NCAA and a couple of more teams including Nebraska still have work to do. I just don't see it sending more than 5 considering that only 5 teams out of 14 have winning conference records and most brackets have only 4 teams going.

@HighEliteMajor

By resources I meant the eagerness of the player to be coached and to assimilate all the instructions when he is so raw and with so much to learn. I thought the second paragraph of my post made that abundantly clear.

I believe that its is more likely that Doke was overwhelmed by all the instructions and he and the staff prioritized where to concentrate rather than to accuse the staff of "gross negligence."

Having said that, if you want to find fault with Coach Self and/or staff you will do it anyway, nothing new there since you have really being doing it all along with short periods of rest in between criticism.

@Big-Clyde52

Do you realize that when Vandy played TCU, TCU did not shoot a single free throw? I am not saying it did not score, I am saying it did not even go to the line a single time...how rare is that...
