Wow- I have close ties to several faculty at Olathe NHS. Didn't know this stuff. Thanks for opening my eyes.

Wow KD

Great post. I learned a ton-thanks for your post and research.

@ Icthawk

  • IMO a good coach doesn't usher someone out before he is ready to make some room for someone new. I don't see Self doing this.
    On the,other hand is someone needs to be pushed out of the nest because he is ready to fly that is something else. My best guess is Self told BMAC and Embid he would love them to stay. But the circumstances for them as individuals meant they should go for the money. JMO.

I agree. We already took the drop for the UK game. You'd think we would get a little nudge up for winning that tourney.

Head Coaching Job • Dec 02, 2014 08:52 PM

Nope-too much history going back to Naismith and PHOG Allen for starters. Indisputable coaching trees, 2nd winningest program in total wins ever, 5 national titles, conference titles out the wazoo, and all-Americans & NBA players on top of that. Now we may slide a few years here and there but we bounce bank and will ALWAYS be Royalty IMO.

@wissoxfan83

One thing about Nebraska is they don't have an in-state college to compete with and zero pro sports to distract the fans either. They expect better results from time to time. Now that they left the Big12 I'm sure recruiting in Texas is tougher because the kids can't play games in Texas anymore.

Florida Gators • Dec 01, 2014 07:58 PM

Are you trying to tell us Bob Villa is the love child of Jed Clampet and Faye Dunaway?

@drgnslayr
My best guess is these days most kids grow up playing club ball from the get go. They get coaching with specific skill development early on.

As you know, players develop physically different as well. My generation was bigger than my fathers and so on. I remember looking at teenage girls compared to 30 years ago, and they mature earlier too.

And, we all played three or four sports. These kids play one sport year round.
So, kids with talent are spotted earlier. Technology helps spot that and highlight that.
I think the talent pool is much deeper this generation with the best of the best matched up frequently. The cream rises to the top. And nutrition, weight training.

It happened with KU Football and Nolan Cromwell. He came in as a Freshman and was a starting DB by the end of his frosh year.

Love Rocky Top song that I've sung for years, but I doubted it's the volunteer fight song.

Faith, Family, KUbuckets! • Nov 28, 2014 02:24 AM

Happy Thanksgiving to all. Had mid -day dinner at relatives, so used the DVR. When I got home checked the score before firing up the DVR and enjoyed a nice stress free game. Our boys were having fun the first half no doubt.
The second half got sloppy for a while.

Looking forward to beating Tennessee

@jaybate-1.0
Out of the gate I will admit you see things I don't, but when I read your opening post on this thread I felt you were harsh and perhaps mean spirited.
I've never seen us get beat so badly, and I hope it never happens again while I am around. Still- I think the tone you started this thread with seems to be written in anger and disgust. Not that I didn't feel both those emotions last night. Perhaps it's therapeutic for some but you've made some pretty strong statements here. Maybe to motivate players that might see this? Not sure-but I know I've calmed down the last 24 hours. Self is fair game but these kids are 17 to what-20 years old.
I hope I can put this game behind me. I for one believe Rider will be a cakewalk and we can start healing with that game.

Taking a deep breath after KU-UK debacle • Nov 19, 2014 10:22 PM

I hear you. I don't throw stuff but I yell at the TV. Seems we record just about all the KU or KSU stuff cause we are busy with kids activities. If we are watching live and they get off to a bad start I watch something else and check it out later. Sometimes its time to get back in the game-other times it is best not to watch. Sure helps my mood at times.

Taking a deep breath after KU-UK debacle • Nov 19, 2014 08:02 PM

@globaljaybird
Got it. I agree-why would I want to go looking for bad performances with this so fresh on my mind. Lucky for me I was recording it and changed channels at half. I looked at my iPad for score updates. I didn't see anything to tempt me to look at the game again and eventually quit looking for the score altogether.

Taking a deep breath after KU-UK debacle • Nov 19, 2014 07:07 PM

@globaljaybird
Lawrence???

Speaking of shoecos- what was heard in the Kentucky locker room after the game. (referring to our KU team)?

"Gee, I'd hate to be in their shoes."

RENTLESS ONSLAUGHT! • Nov 19, 2014 05:00 AM

Not saying UK isnt stacked. Why play into the paint. Shoot outside when the first half game. Shut us down inside. HCBS? I believe in you but this looks like we have no options???

RENTLESS ONSLAUGHT! • Nov 19, 2014 04:44 AM

19.6 shooting percentage. Not a stat guy but can't remember seeing that before of a ku team. Stat man?

RENTLESS ONSLAUGHT! • Nov 19, 2014 04:28 AM

Just checked in on the score. Outscored 2:1 well into the second half.

I don't have the words.

RENTLESS ONSLAUGHT! • Nov 19, 2014 03:31 AM

I am watching a recording -at 9:38 we are getting our buts kick all over the court. They own us right now.

Can't we try some threes for heaven sake. THIS BEAT DOWN SUCKS.
MAKE AN ADJUSTMENT SELF!!!

Alright. I am out of here... • Nov 19, 2014 01:39 AM

@approxinfinity
I think you've got a glitch. I am not complaining because it's not a big deal but I am getting notifications posters are mentioning me-the last one to me to your post to someone else.

Don't know that this trail is dead, but just in case it's on pause our next coach should be:
Coach Bowen!!!

Wow! KU playing with motivation... • Nov 16, 2014 03:09 AM

I've said it several times over several weeks. Hire Bowen. I hear this from k-club football players too.

@wrwlumpy
Very cool.

@globaljaybird
NIce that Danny was there to see Evan hit the trey-after the game someone asked Evan what his dad said to him after the game. "Nice shot" was the answer.

And I am right with you about Danny filling HCBS shoes when the day comes. I am not in a hurry for that to happen, because I want Danny to have success in what many consider the best bball conference. A few years of success in the ACC should make Danny the obvious choice for the post Self era at KU.

@drgnslayr
Wonderful read. Every kid playing college ball can take something away from this interview.

@Lulufulu
Not sure -sounds like Bruce Banner talking to Tony Stark in Avengers.

@JRyman
Thanks-Those are good-I may borrow a couple.

Okay the two rules of biz and general conversation is avoid religion and politics. Yet when I fess up to playing a cupcake I will ,say, "we played lady of our sorrows high".

Never knew there was a Christian Brothers college and yes it sounds like a team nobody wants to lose to. But hey, I'm a Christian myself.

@Statmachine
Thanks-I probably would have missed it without your link.

@wissoxfan83
Thanks-that would be great because I am lazy about searching for that stuff.

So sorry I reminded you of a painful event like that. I can't remember a trip that sucky and I've never been in an ambulance...(being carted from a game to the ER by mom or dad don't count)
If I every had a trip that sucky my mind erased the episode for me.

UCSB Gauchos • Nov 13, 2014 07:24 PM

@KUSTEVE
You are right on about turning around when the cold air hits them. My first move to SoCal was around 1989 and I remember boarding the plane on the tarmac and John Wayne (SNA) airport-back then they didn't have jetways. Anyway I'm climbing the stairs to board the plane in a golf shirt- its 70 degrees and beautiful, just like every other day the past six months. I had totally forgot that Kansas was cold in the winter and just had a sweater packed in my luggage.
I walked out of the MCI terminal into a 20 degree night and windchill even worse.

Many of those kids will be shell shocked.

@wissoxfan83
I really don't follow the NBA but since Tarik made the Rockets team I check on the box scores. And if I see a Jayhawk in the headlines I will read it. If you come across something worthy post it and I for one will read it.

7 minutes left
Timberwolves up over rockets
Wigs leading scorer for wolves with 13.
Black has 10 for rockets with 5 of 5 shots in 12 minutes of play.
RCJH
Wigs ended with 17, black had 11.

I will add something more we need to remember.
The south belt has no winter to freeze out training, think how many people live in Florida and Texas. With just three small states between them. The summers suck but there are SO MANY kids down here playing football. In our school district outside Houston EVERY school had THREE freshman football teams with two and three strings each.
Think of the talent pool the SEC has (and I hate them).

My first experience in the Jayhawk towers was the summer before my senior Year in an athletic sports camp. That was followed by multiple frat rush parties in different houses and they were all a down grade, and the KU dorms were a drop below that.

I lived in the towers and loved them as a frosh. Loved the training table (athletes cafeteria) even more.
But the jock life in the 70s verses the Greek life/system meant a welcome change. The drop off in food and lodging were huge in that regard. but my college experience was greatly enhanced by joining a frat and serving in leadership roles there. (Not for everyone and I've kept my son away from it.)

So. I haven't been inside the towers for decades, but I have been in a frat house and a KU & KSU dorm and little.is changed including pricey Naismith Hall. At worst, the dorms are not dumps, they are dorms.

Last spring and this summer I toured ALL the KU athletic facilities. They are very nice. The football stadium is low end but so what. So was KSU.
The program and money at KSU rose in a cycle as did the stadium.
A
Two weeks ago I was in Kyle Stadium for an A&M game. 100,000 plus.
We will never be there, and since they have 40,000 students and billions in endowments and are located in one of the top three populated states in the country I don't care. It's apples and oranges.

But we can do what KSU did in time.

I for one don't believe our facilities are the problem. We have what we need for starters. Let's build it like Snyder and KSU did. RCJH

Wigs has 7 points for Timberwolves in first qtr-Black plays 2 minutes for Houston in qtr-no stats but that's cool-lunch pail rookie playing in first qtr.

KU vs. Emporia St - Svi To Start • Nov 12, 2014 03:47 AM

With the $109 price tag for a pay per view-

I went with the audio play by play.
Not a bad way to follow a cupcake game for free. Better than gamescast stats.

KU vs. Emporia St - Svi To Start • Nov 12, 2014 01:10 AM

Best laughter I've had in a while. Checked into xfinity pay-per-vew here in Houston just now

$ 109.26 plus fees and taxes.

Maybe they think there are bars full of Jayhawks down here just waiting for an exhibition game.

Dooms day bunker • Nov 11, 2014 06:25 PM

@Crimsonorblue22

If I had millions, this isn't the first place I'd spend it, but I'd get to it eventually. That said, some events would make it difficult to make the trip. And if you're not already inside for some events it wouldn't do you any good.

Sorry I didn't mention Weis since you credited his work. Perhaps I didn't give him enough credit but I NEVER understood his "pile of cr*p comment" referring to his existing team.

For starters I will say I was pissed Mangino got canned (just like Leach at TT) thanks to the wussification of America-let alone it happened in NCAA football. I took bigger lumps than what I read about and all I took from those episodes were "I've got to do better so I don't let my team mates down."

I saw KU lead and then lose to Rice here in Houston last year and I think Weis was stubborn about passing vs running to the point of losing that game because he insisted we had to prepare for Big 12 play. As if a victory counts less than a game plan. That's not good coaching with a team that only wins twice a year over cupcakes.
Well to his credit he beat WVA and had Texas on the ropes.
Anyway, I believe these kids believe in Bowen and that he has inspired better play and attitude from our players than Weis and Gill put together. Success begets success and even when you are an underdog you gain confidence watching peers or upper classmen make improvements.
So Jaybate-Maybe Weis helped us move forward I used to know the X's and O's way back in the day but not so much anymore.
Anyway-I like what I've seen with Bowen. I think these kids believe in him, are playing better with him, and I think he can right the ship. And if so, I don't see him leaving KU -ever. JMO. RCJH

KU leading ISU 17-0 after one quarter... • Nov 10, 2014 02:28 AM

Unfortunately we are in a tough position. We have been down so long good teams know they better score a lot of points when they play us lest they look weak so the foot never leaves the gas pedal. If our offense can't give the defense a rest it can get ugly. AND no matter who they are playing these ranked teams are looking to score style points every game.

I say give Bowen the job. I did not see the Baylor game, but I've seen improvement in our play and the players attitude since he took over.
So happy to see them enjoy a win yesterday. I know ISU isn't a very good team, but we also had OSU tied late in the game.
And, I believe Bowen will be able to recruit better than the last two coaches.
Give Bowen a conservative salary with nice rewarding incentives based on performance. I think he wins more games next year and has us bowl eligible in a year or two more. Maybe it's wishful thinking but my gut tells me he has KU on the right track.
