@wissoxfan83 I really feel good about Embiid coming back. Can you imagine him playing with Cliff?
@jaybate 1.0 We seem to win differently every game. The one thing consistent is we win. I'm not sure Baylor ever actually knew they were eligible to win a game against KU at AFH. Baylor lost the second they heard the crowd at the beginning of the game. The look on the Baylor player's faces as they watched the spectacle of the best homecourt advantage in all of sports just blow away Baylor before the opening tip was ... priceless. Baylor has been to the Elite 8 twice in the past, and they're 0-11 here, Elite 8 teams included. So, I would add crowd intimidation to our free throw defense as another factor in the win as well.
@Blown Did you see Kenpom dropped us down the rankings after our win against Da Bears? He went ga-ga over Creighton's epic beatdown of Villanova, so we lost a slot in his latest rankings. I certainly hope that Creighton is placed in a bracket far, far away from the Good Guys. That display they put on last night was nothing less than astonishing.
@JayHawkFanToo The great part of playing Baylor is next time, we'll figure out a different way to beat them. Scott Drew - a gift that just keeps giving...
@REHawk I hope you're right that they spend time learning to break the press. I would think we'd have a huge advantage with the speed we have on our team in breaking that press.
@drgnslayr From the Avengers, " Doth Mother know you weareth her drapes"?
@jaybate 1.0 That has to be it. He's thinking Baylor as well. Makes sense. I will be so happy when we learn to beat the press. Our team could have some spectacular run outs with the crew we have. That was the one thing Roy used to do so well - beating the press. I still remember when Pitino decided he would press us all day, and we scored 150 against Kentucky.
@jaybate 1.0 Was Self "holding his horses"? Was that why he didn't play Black 2nd half? Is he trying to hold this team back so they don't peak too early?
@ParisHawk I saw it on a tweet, and really liked it. I can't wait for March to see how far he progresses.
@Lulufulu85 Ding, ding, ding- we have a winner!!! That's it. Our OFFENSE is better. Better than last year. Better than two years ago, at least statistically. Now, if we can learn how to make the other team pay for pressing us ...then it's Katie, bar the door. I think our defense will round into shape, and with Embeast in the paint, we will have a legitimate shot at a Final Four. This team learns from its mistakes, so the 2nd half collapse will keep us humble, and hungry. The next press we see, we will do a much better job with.
Doogie Snotlieb is butt hurt over his Cowpokes taking a beating from the good guys. He was reduced to babbling about San Diego State in his effort to not give KU credit for smashing his alma mater in the first half.
@jaybate 1.0 Doogie...love it!!!! I have a visceral reaction to Doogie, much like many do with Dicky V. . When he tweeted out the KU slam after we beat the Clones on their home court, I was waiting for him to show himself to be a Cow Patty homer. You are probably right about the sportscasting teams choosing up sides, but I'm sure they didn't have to twist Doogie's arm to take his beloved Cow Patties.
@RockChalkinTexas You're probably right. Just because Gottlieb is an OSU grad, and posted the only disparaging tweet in the media about our victory over ISU, and was giddy as a school girl with the possibility of OSU winning at PHOG for the 2nd straight year, he was just being a talking head. Nothing to see here, move along.
@KUSTEVE I found Snotlieb's last two tweets about KU...
Doug Gottlieb @GottliebShow Jan 15
We shall see #CBS RT @leftyrollks: @GottliebShow Who you got Saturday? Does Smart come in and shock The Phog again?
Doug Gottlieb @GottliebShow Jan 14
KU fans, before you pound your chest... Let's talk 24 turnovers...
Some real shocking news : Doug "Snotleib" Gottlieb is the only "expert" on CBS picking the Cow Patties to win. The other three experts are selecting KU. Of course, the other three experts didn't graduate from OSU like Snotlieb. Geez, what a homer.
This will be a great game. I think the Pokies have guaranteed themselves our best shot. Wiggins is not a guy you want to try to motivate, or challenge if you happen to be the other team, imo. Just a hunch on my part, but I think he has his best game tomorrow. My final score prediction: KU 74 Okie St 61.
@HighEliteMajor I am scratching my head wondering where I was at in November 2012 where I would miss Joel Embiid verbally committing to the Jayhawks. Forgive me, my memory doesn't serve me well.
If you are implying the Squid is lazy, I wouldn't disagree with that. A whole slew of coaches missed out on Embiid. He was behind Dakari Johnson on the depth chart at the Rock, and I think most of the teams were hotly pursuing Johnson, including us. I modified my earlier statement due to my faulty memory which somehow forgot that Embiid had committed so early last year. Maybe the Mildcats didn't pursue Embiid because they were holding their schollies for the imagined "bigger fish" they thought they could reel in- maybe the Squid's only coaching abilities are simply throwing a basketball out on the floor, and he thought Joel would be too much work.
@drgnslayr I don't see it as a trap game. With all the noise from last year, along with Smart's comments concerning Wigs, I think we'll see a tremendous effort from our guys.
I also feel we will win by at least 10 points. Outside of Stillwater, the Pokies are pretty average, imo. Maybe we can drop two teams out of the top ten in the same week.
I wasn't surprised by our win. For gosh sakes, we're 17-1 our last 18 against them. Maybe I am biased against all things Clones, but I never bought the hype of the Clones 14-0 start. I am also having trouble envisioning Okie State as a top ten team, too. I think we'll play well against the Pokies, and send them home with a loss on Saturday.
If ISU wants to try to play us with a one legged point guard, I'm all for it.
Here's a good trivia question : How many games did it take for KU to be alone in first place in the Big 12? Answer. 2 games. ISU on the road? We got this. 10 Big 12 crowns in a row? We got this.
Iowa st is a 2 1/2 point favorite w Vegas. I think both offenses will beat both defenses, but I think our offense will beat their defense worse than their offense beats our defense. Clear as mud? I'm thinking 94-89 .. the good guys on top.
@drgnslayr I would give that award to both Black brothers - Jamari and Tarik. Because they play like they have been playing together their whole lives. Their short passing game was a thing of beauty... a work of art. To me, it was the best example of teamwork so far this season.
@jaybate 1.0 Kane will be leading the ISU bench Monday, and they will try to use him being out as a rallying cry. Then the game will start, and we will flat blister that Clone defense. It's high time we hit 100, and maybe this is the game we do it.
It was a complete victory, where we played well on both ends of the court. K- State had all kinds of trouble running their offense, and our offense was simply the best its been all year. The passing was simply superb- one of the fast breaks, I don't think the ball touched the floor end to end. Selden is a new man. He has taken advantage of the opportunities, and changed our offense for the better. I think Wigs is capable of totally dominating a game, which we saw a good example today. I get the feeling with Wigs that the bigger the challenge, the better he is going to play. Only negative of the game: Naadir, love the 9 dimes, but 1 for 7? C'mon, man...
I was watching a national championship contender today. Selden has been a new man, which has opened up our whole offense. Wiggins came to himself this game, quit thinking as much, and simply starting playing. I believe, with the progress shown by Embiid, Selden, and now Wiggins, we will compete for a national championship this year.
The Traylor/Black show was something to see - one guy drawing in the doubleteam, and then hitting the other guy with a perfect pass for an easy score.
I don't know how good this team is yet. I think we've seen on several occasions how bad they can be. I think our ceiling could be 2008, even though we more closely resemble 2007 so far.
@nuleafjhawk Iowa State is going to whine anyway, because that's what a Clone-bot does. So, Kane can rest up Monday, we'll take care of business, and the Clone-bots can go back to being miserable.
@nuleafjhawk Liberace. I wish I had thought of that. Brilliant!
@JayDocMD I am 99% certain he stays another year. It's a gut feeling, but I think he loves all of it. He loves the jokes, the laughter, the challenge of learning, etc. Notice his comportment versus AW and Selden. I mean, last game we saw Selden smile for the first time all season. I'm not sure we've seen Wigs smile yet. Embiid is eating this up. It reminds me of the little girl on the ATT commercial who says, "we want more, we want more". He wants more! He wants more!!!
As for Miles Turner, I would take Embiid any day of the week if I had my druthers. My guess is 99% he stays.
@iowajayhawk2005 Hehehe. My friend, I want to share my sage wisdom and advice with you concerning Mr. Greene that was told to me by a wise KU fan two months ago: His name is Brannen. This was after I used the name "Brennan" 14 times, so I have loads of experience. I have a theory about Brannen. Brannen is trying to prove himself. He might seem like a punk, but I think it's a kid trying to prove to everyone he's just as tough as the next guy. I'll let you fill in the blanks for the underlying causes of that.
Mr. Black will be extremely important to our team at some point this year. You cannot put out that much great karma and not be rewarded at some future point. Maybe it's a key block that sends us to the Final Four - maybe it's an earthshaking slam dunk that changes an entire game... at some point this season, Tarik is going to do something very special.
@jaybate 1.0 It's better for both of us if he does transfer. Better for him because the kid can play. Better for us because we have quite a log jam with Selden, Greene, and Francamp. Oubre is coming in. If Embiid stays another year, which I think there is a good chance he will, we're looking at lineup with 5-Embiid 4-Alexander, 3 Ellis, 2-Oubre/Greene/Francamp with Frankentharpe at the point. Even if Embiid goes, I could see Myles Turner signing to play the 5.
There just isn't room at the inn. It's sad, because AW3 has worked harder than other player on that team, and he just can't crack that lineup. Several years ago, he would've been one of our stars.
One of the many talents a woman possesses is the innate ability to help a man to gain perspective of the value of any given process. She uses her womanly charms to allow a man to see the bigger picture. In this instance, she reminded her husband to loosen up, have fun,and enjoy himself while going through the meat grinder of a season this has been. Other than texting, the methods she utilized to achieve such excellent results are purely speculative, therefore are unmentionable. As Iowahawk's official press liason, this will be our official response to any further inquiries regarding what will be known as the "Cindy Self texting incident".
@nuleafjhawk Our brand name is much bigger than any two bit announcer. Bigger than Dicky V, Jay Bilas, Doug "the rug" Gottleib, bigger than Elvis, and in my humble opinion, bigger than the Beatles, or Slim Whitman. We are the Kansas Jayhawks, a world class basketball franchise that needs no endorsement from anyone. There are people from Misery U who actually watch KU basketball, just so they can see what a real world class basketball team looks like. If KU could talk, it would say " all the ladies call me big'un, and all the men call me sir". It is simply a privilege that Bilas gets to watch us play. Now maybe Jay doesn't realize that, but we do. And that's all that's important.
@jaybate 1.0 Hey, I have a way to get Perry to go to the 3. Let's talk Embiid into returning next year. That way, we'd have Embiid at the 5, Cliffie at the 4, Perry at the 3, Oubre at the 2, and Frankentharpe at the point. That way, when Perry gets beat by quicker 3s, we'd have Embiid and Alexander waiting for them in the paint. I'm beginning to think this year is a repeat of 2007, which was actually a prelude year to the national championship year. I just knew we were the best team in nation that year, and that bitter loss to Ben Hooligan and the UCLAs still burns a bee in my butt. Little did I know the payoff would be the next year.
@Blown I don't think Naadir is 100%. He is moving gingerly on that ankle. He definitely isn't planting his feet like he was pre-injury.
Conner throws crisp passes. I noticed that. I also noticed his shot has a really cool backspin, which makes me think he probably could throw a curve in baseball. I didn't think he looked overmatched against OU. Of course, OU doesn't play a shed of defense, either. There is no way Naadir is 100%. He is moving much slower on that ankle. we could see more and more of Mr. Francamp, which is a-ok with me.
@iowajayhawk2005 Let's get to pouring some iced tea, my friend. We start out in conference with a nice road win. Wayne Selden has finally woke up. It was nice to not scream at the tv for once. Imagine this - I'm in the hospital after suffering a heart attack the night before. The SDSU game comes on, and I start yelling loudly , and the nurse comes flying into the room wanting to know why I am yelling. I said "maam, this is serious..this is KU bb".
@iowajayhawk2005 You make more sense than anyone on here. People like that. I do, at least. I have been grappling with the same issue of having our worst 3 point shooters shooting the most 3 pointers. The fact you pointed it out tells me I'm not the only KU fan who has wondered the same question.
@iowajayhawk2005 I noticed during the drama in the Bahamas that our pgs were taking a slew of shots, and I went back, and saw during our loss to Michigan last year, they had taken the most shots of any position on the floor ( Mclemore included), so I have been openly wondering why ever since. This tells me that GMTA, and I have come to the conclusion almost all of it has to do with the ball not moving, like you surmised.
@iowajayhawk2005 Here's the rule of thumb: when our point guards take less than 10 shots, we win. When our pgs take more than 10 shots, we lose. Now, which comes first: the chicken or the egg? Does the pgs taking the most shots mean the offense isn't moving, the guys aren't getting open, and there is no one else left to take the shot... or does it mean the pgs are trying to hog the shots, and not looking to set up the teammates? I've been asking that question for awhile now. I'm not sure I've come up with a definitive answer yet.
@JayDocMD Fair question. Let me ask you a question: when did Dooley have 3 or 4 freshmen starters to deal with? If Releford and Withey were put into the KU lineup when they were freshmen, how would they have done? Now, what if Rele and Withey were facing the toughest non conference schedule in the nation, how would they have done? I don't think this is a coaching problem as much as an experience problem.
@REHawk I saw that. One genius has us finishing 9-9 in conference. I love this team, and I love this coach. I think we'll throttle OU, beat the Kitties, and cap it off with handing the Clones their first loss. I believe.
I think our offense will get much better in a hurry against OU. I can't count how many point blank shots we missed against the Aztecs. We're not as good as the Dook game led us to believe, and we're not as bad as we showed against SDSU. I look for our make up game Wednesday, and a chance for the good guys to slap around Bruce Weber and the Kitties on Saturday. Then, up comes the Clones at Ames. So, we will have a great chance to remind everyone who the Big Dogs are on the porch in the Big 12.
I think we win the Big 12 again. It's not going to be a cakewalk, but I think we'll edge Iowa St and the Cow Pokes for our 10th straight title. These lumps we're taking will help us grow as a team. By March, we will be very, very tough. This team has a nearly unlimited ceiling, and it will be fun to watch them grow.
Coach Self will get this figured out. I know we seem to have to lose with every new lesson, but I think we haven't come close to seeing the best game yet out of this crew. I know Perry is small at the 4, and Naadir is an exceptionally average point guard, but we've managed to go far in the tourney with more holes than what we have now. Like the Bachmann-Turner Overdrive song says" You ain't seen nothing yet". The more this team plays, the better we will get. I would rather this team peak in March than January.
@HighEliteMajor You go back to the Dook game, where a confident, poised Greene rips off 5 points in two minutes compared to now where he comes in, passes the ball three times around the perimeter and sits the rest of the game. He played 5 minutes without attempting a shot.
I don't have any brilliant analysis or conclusions to explain it - I would think a 6'7" guard with a smooth shot would be a good thing. If he isn't going to use Greene to win games, maybe he could use him to teach Mr. Wigs how to throw a decent pass. My gosh, how many lazy passes does Andrew throw a game that result in either a t.o., or a near t.o.?
@JayHawkFanToo I know they're called the "Rockets", but I mentally keep calling them the Toledo Mud Hens, which is the Triple A affiliate to the Detroit Tiggers. According to Kenpom, they are heavy on offense, not so much on defense. They come in as the 12th highest ranked offense in cbb, and the 239th best defense. I feel some thunder dunking run out jams coming our way Monday night. I feel 100 points are coming tomorrow for the good guys, so it will be worth the wait we've had to endure.
