@mayjay Ok, this is off the beaten path a bit, but I've always wondered this about point shaving...OK, let's say you have a player that ISN'T point shaving...in fact, he's doing the opposite...he's hitting every shot, every time, and he is helping his team not only win, but
helping covering the spread. Why shouldn't he be charged with a crime because he is intentionally helping the people who bet on his team to win and cover? Why do they only charge the guys that help the team lose, and not the ones that help the team win?

Note: Literal Reader's Alert: The above post may actually not be a real question, but may be a feeble attempt at humor.

NCAA Rule Changes- Oh boyyy β€’ Aug 09, 2018 02:28 AM

@mayjay I am envisioning the agent at Bill's practice, telling him how to "showcase" his star. "Bill, don't run the hi-lo. I'm going to need for you to set some picks on the perimeter so my guy can shoot the 3 pointer. Now, let's do it again until you get it right". This might be what makes Bill go to the NBA.

Hey, I know this is a tad off-topic, but I was thinking out loud, and was wondering if we get in any hot water over Silvio, couldn't we like self-impose a bowl ban on our football team for the upcoming year, and use that as a self-imposed penalty? I mean, the basketball team has been carrying football for practically every year for almost 100 years ... take one for the team, football.

Literal Reader Alert: This is a sarcasm warning. The above post may not be a literal question.

@stoptheflop He hasn't flourished over there, but it seems the team is struggling at 1-2. I don't know if they are playing against pro players or teams that have been together for years, but it might be a case of the whole team being overmatched by grown men. I'll bet he does better, and finds his sea legs next game.

Roy Court β€’ Aug 06, 2018 01:35 PM

@HighEliteMajor I had forgotten about 1991. That sinks my battleship a bit. I made myself rewatch the KU/Cuse nc game for the first time ever yesterday, and my memory didn't match what I saw. Roy looked more engaged than I had remembered, so I think you and Mayjay are probably right about him not tanking. I noticed in year's past that Roy would get nearly hysterical on the sidelines in the tournament to the point that people wondered if he was icing the team, and this tournament he was really calm and subdued. So, I went back and looked at UNC's first national championship, and Roy was just as subdued. So, maybe it was just a maturing process for Roy to remain more calm. Heck, if Roy can learn how to remain calm, maybe I can, too. Hehehe...

Roy Court β€’ Aug 06, 2018 11:24 AM

@HighEliteMajor I have never doubted his coaching abilities. Just his loyalties.

Roy Court β€’ Aug 05, 2018 03:35 PM

@mayjay My Roy "unhappiness"...lol. Ok, i'll play along ... let's pretend Roy was only there for KU the whole time, always put KU first, and there was never a recruit east of the Mississippi that was worth taking in 15 years... but I have to wonder why after the game, one of the first questions he was asked by the Press was is he going to take the UNC job. Hmmm. So the Press were "suspicious" about Roy's intentions. And here's his response:

Williams lost last week to Syracuse in the national championship game and angrily refused to answer questions about North Carolina after the game. Matt Doherty resigned as Tar Heels coach shortly before the Final Four.

A week later, he is their new coach.

Here's the link: https://www.ourmidland.com/news/article/Coach-Roy-Williams-Leaving-Kansas-for-UNC-7153088.php β†— β†—

I really like the first sentence of the article: Roy Williams told the Kansas Jayhawks he is leaving to coach North Carolina, his beloved alma mater, according to players who attended a meeting with him Monday.

There's a phrase called "mailing it in". I accuse Roy of mailing it in that last game. That doesn't mean he tried to lose- he just didn't try to win. In my opinion, he seemed aloof, distracted, and subdued through the whole tournament. Any reasonable fan would question the motives of a coach that refused to recruit 58% of the country for 15 years in deference to his "dream job at his beloved alma mater". The truth is he never valued the KU job- if he had recruited the whole country, and had planted his flag at KU, then I have no doubts he would've won 3 national championships in the 15 years he was here. No telling how many national championships he would've had if he stayed, and was still coach ( as long as the academic fraud didn't ruin our program).

I understand that Roy is like a saint to some KU fans, and he can do no wrong in their eyes. People were glad he wasn't Ted Owens. He did an amazing job considering the self-imposed limitations he placed on himself and KU. Thank God he took the UNC job because if he had continued the academic fraud here, we might not even have a program ( we don't have the pull with the NCAA that UNC does. I'm not sure anyone else, either. Maybe Duke. )

Roy Court β€’ Aug 05, 2018 02:02 AM

@HighEliteMajor He treated the KU job as though it was an inferior job. Not recruiting east of the Mississippi? If Bill did that to protect another university other than KU, we'd have his head on a platter. Then, after yet another terrible loss in the championship game, he quits, and runs off to Carolina. I know you've had your issues with Bill in the past, but he has elevated the KU program to where it would be unthinkable for a coach to leave KU for another college job. I'll give Roy his due- he kept us winning, he normally did very well in the NCAA tournament until he got to the Final Four, and he kept the program going for 15 years. But, he shit all over us in so many ways, from his exit, to his deference in recruiting to appease his hero, Dean Smith, to his true failure as a coach in that last game ... how could anyone not openly speculate he was hoping we would lose, so it would make his quitting easier? And the fact that Roy and his daddy Dean are the ones who set up the largest case of academic fraud in NCAA history makes me glad he's gone.

101 years, and still going strong.

Roy Court β€’ Aug 04, 2018 04:08 PM

No one will ever convince me that Roy wanted to win that game against Syracuse. He had made his mind up about leaving way before the national championship game, and it wouldn't have looked good to leave a program that just won the national championship. And I still question the effort of our team when we handed the national championship to UNC years earlier. The only "statue" of Roy I would be in favor of would be made out of paper mache, and burned at the stake.

@drgnslayr I say we name one of our exits after him.

Ranking the Big 12 Coaches. β€’ Aug 03, 2018 01:43 PM

@nuleafjhawk He was one of my favorite players growing up. I think lonnie is a genuinely good guy, but his teams play no defense, which always limit their upside.

Ranking the Big 12 Coaches. β€’ Aug 02, 2018 10:31 PM

@nuleafjhawk Lon is a Top 25 coach. Most years they will qualify for an NCAA bid, and land somewhere in the Top 25. Then he has his rebuild years. Trae Young was a once in a lifetime signing for Lonnie, and at least they ended up playing a game in the NCAAs. Beyond that, he is not that great of a coach, imo. Although, I give him props for taking that crew led by Buddy for the whole 4 years. That in itself might be Lon's greatest accomplishment.

Ranking the Big 12 Coaches. β€’ Aug 02, 2018 07:27 PM

1- Self

2- Boykin

3- Beard

4- Huggy

5- Liberace

The rest are unmentionable. I went with Boykin after they manhandled us twice in the regular season. I thought his preparation as a coach was exceptional. Beard took Tech as far as anyone else has done ever. Liberace makes it for beating Tucky, and Huggy's teams always compete.

KU #1 in Pre-Season BPI. β€’ Aug 02, 2018 05:34 PM

The number of ball handlers, passers, and multi threat guys on this team are the highest since 2008. I think Dedric, KJ, Grimes, Dotson and Vick put on passing, shooting and driving clinics. Once Dedric and Grimes discover each other on the court, it's all over. Their two man game could be unstoppable. And Vick will get lobs the whole season.

CHAMPIONSHIP OR BUST β€’ Jul 31, 2018 07:50 PM

We have never had a bad season under Bill. The floor is incredibly high. 10 Sweet Sixteens in 15 years. 8 Elite 8s. 3 Final Fours. 1 championship. If we make it back to the Final Four, it will be another astonishing achievement. If we win, then Bill becomes the best coach at KU ...ever.

"Rivalry Renewed" KU-MU Border War β€’ Jul 30, 2018 06:28 PM

@Texas-Hawk-10 I don't see him launching as many 3s as he took in Memphis. Hidden in his stats that show such a poor 3 point % also show a quantum leap in his 2 point shot - from 40 to 52% in one year. 27% versus 52% will not escape our coaches... are you sure they aren't going to try and post him up at times, like they did with Perry?( I think it would work out better with Dedric).

"Rivalry Renewed" KU-MU Border War β€’ Jul 30, 2018 02:07 PM

@JayHawkFanToo The other element is simply shot selection. I noticed in practically every Dedric tape, he uses a turn around jumper from 3 a lot. Now, practically nobody in basketball uses that move anymore because it makes you twist your whole body, and it doesn't allow you to truly get set when you shoot. I wonder if that move is driving down his shooting percent, because it's much easier to make a shot when your whole body isn't moving 180 degrees. As tall as he is, I don't think he has to use the element of surprise to get a good shot.

"Rivalry Renewed" KU-MU Border War β€’ Jul 30, 2018 01:56 PM

@Texas-Hawk-10 Shooting is a skill that can be improved. I think he's more dangerous driving the ball anyway. Also, he is truly an exceptional passer... Doke will love him. If he shoots less than 30% from 3, he won't be taking that shot anymore- guarantee it. Bill will have a cow.

"Rivalry Renewed" KU-MU Border War β€’ Jul 30, 2018 01:00 PM

It just hit me...we're going to run the 4 out ...with size! Dedric will be will seen on the perimeter a lot...same with either his brother and/or Vick....the difference is, we'll be dribble driving, as well as shooting 3s, while Doke plants down low. Our passing will be exceptional with Dedric and Grimes in the lineup, and their ability to drive the ball will open up the whole court. Even if Dedric starts the set down low, he can come out to the perimeter, which will create all kinds of motion for our offense. This is a team that can attack and break a press, and punish the other team for running it ( no $$$ for Huggie this year ). Our athleticism will simply be off the charts. This team has the weapons to be one of the most dominating teams we've seen in a long time.

KU released info about FBI Subpeonas β€’ Jul 26, 2018 06:05 PM

If Silvio can't play, i could see McCormick stepping up in a big way. We have an embarrassment of riches on the front line.

@drgnslayr Jesse Newell had a big article last year concerning our team's lack of perimeter defense. And it bit us hard in the Nova. What bit us even harder was facing a superior defensive team in the Final Four...a team that blanketed the 3 point line. We've all seen 3 point shooting teams flame out in the tournament ( Notre Dame, Dook ) due to the fact they just didn't defend that well, and sooner or later, the 3 point shot doesn't fall. You could even group our team last year in that category... the thing that makes Nova so special is their defense. They shot horribly from 3 against Tech, and still won by double digits. I know it will never happen, but if Bill ever tries the NBA, Wright would be my favorite pick by a mile to replace him.

KU released info about FBI Subpeonas β€’ Jul 25, 2018 11:36 PM

@mayjay You're an attorney...wouldn't that trigger a lawsuit from Silvio that they are trying to hold someone accountable that didn't even benefit from the illegal activity, and was unaware of it?I'm no attorney, and I don't play one on tv, but that seems like a real raw deal.

Charlie Going Back To Italy β€’ Jul 22, 2018 03:46 PM

OK, this is what I like about Charlie that makes him so valuable this year:

Track record: Let's start with...

Mr. Basketball of Illinois in 2016. The three winners before him were Jalen Brunson, Jahlil Okafor, and Jabari Parker.

Ranked 71st on Rivals in 2016 ( mainly due to his 5'7" height listed ), Moore signs with Memphis, and decommits, and signs with Cal. ( Hmmm...maybe he met the Lawsons during that time, and that's why he's here.) As a freshman at Cal, he was required many times to carry the scoring load due to Cal's many injuries during the season, where as many as 4 starters were out at the same time. He ended up averaging double digits his freshman year.

What he brings to the table:

A sophomore with an extra year in our system is always a good thing. The guy is lightening quick, drawing comments from other KU players this summer. The guy can shoot- any three point shooter that can hit over 33% translates to a 50% shooter from 2, and Charlie hit 35% from 3 in his freshman year. Not Svi or Devonte good, but certainly good enough for a team that has college basketball's best front line. And he's had a full year to work on his shot. And the guy can drive and dish, and drive and score at the basket. I didn't say score at the rim- I said score at the basket. Although KU has him officially listed at 5'11", I'd say he was closer to 5'7. Being short while playing along a 7 footer, and guys like Dedric, DeSouza, KJ, and company can be a great asset. He can literally hide in plain sight on the court.

His greatest asset is intangible- a confidence that few players possess. We saw that steely look of determination in Frank and Devonte over the years along with others that have been around the block, and Charlie has that look and that feel. For most players, that confidence takes time to build. Not Charlie. He is going to kick your ass, and make you like it. They will not be able to keep him off the floor, imo.

@kjayhawks The boat design was different from when I went on it ( 25 years ago ). Back then, they didn't have the windows on the side of the boat- it was open air, but the dang rails were so high, you only had about 2 feet to view out. It was hot as hell the day I went, and my 4 year old son couldn't even see out of the boat. I left thinking what a waste of money and time...
