@approxinfinity I'm not sure. My buddy (the manager) just said "Dwight was probably transferring." And then I asked if it's because we are getting Tilmon or if he knew anything about him. He supposedly could have visited on Sunday is what my buddy said. I'll ask him and see if it happened or not. I didn't get to grill him about it as much as I'd like to, and try not to bother him about stuff all the time so he keeps giving me stuff.

@BShark And my buddy said something similar to this: "Lightfoot is awful. Just awful. He gets roasted at practice. He shouldn't even be playing here. He should be playing down the road at BU." I'm not sure if that is what the coaches think, but this is at least someone's view that is at practice every day with the team.

NFL Draft • May 02, 2017 01:47 PM

Who would have thought that a discussion about domestic violence could have gotten out of hand?

@approxinfinity Yea, I'm ok with letting the pitch clock go. But I wouldn't mind seeing some rules instituted in the regular season to make the games go faster. No game should last 5 hours. Ever.

@approxinfinity I heard it from one of the basketball managers that he is probably leaving.

@Crimsonorblue22 I wouldn't think we are screwed. We will end up with a backup to Doke one way or another. Either Coleby will stay, Tilmon will come or someone will come out of the woodwork.

Duke landed Thorton about this time because they whiffed on every PG they went for. Had to call him up and get him to reclass. We could do something similar, worst case scenario.

@JayHawkFanToo just telling you guys what I hear. But I can keep those comments to myself instead if you would like.

@BeddieKU23 You're right, it will shake out.

I just haven't heard good things about Lightfoot in practice. I heard he should be playing down the road at Baker...

So I don't feel confident he should be out there playing the 4 anymore than Cunliffe, Vick or Svi. I guess that is what I'm basing most of my opinion on. I definitely see Preston and Doke starting the game. But there is only about 25 minutes a piece there. So I'm seeing us be a 4 guard lineup 15 minutes a game at least...

@approxinfinity No no no. It was a beautiful American opera 50-60 years ago before pitching changes got outrageous and managers started to make too many moves.

Pitching changes would be a good start, I admit. But also, you shouldn't take longer than 1 minute to throw a pitch. Familia for the Mets routinely takes over a minute. Absurd.

And I'm ok with running the bases after a HR, it's an option...

The main reason I would like games shortened is that it is hard to go to a weekday game now. They are so long you might not get home until 12 AM.... I can't do that.

@BeddieKU23 I think it is an injustice to the team to not play 4 guards if we don't add another post. We are too good and athletic to not put that on the floor. You need to put your 5 best basketball players on the floor and things will take care of themselves.

And, as far as draft stock, I think it only helps a guy like Svi or Vick. It shows 2 things. That they can operate in an NBA spread style offense. And, that they can guard positions 2-4. If anything, it raises their draft stock.

@wissox So many things wrong with baseball.

  • I think extra innings should be 6v6.
  • Pitch clock
  • Review only HRs until the 7th inning or later
  • 1 mound visit per game
  • 1 pitching change during middle of an inning for the whole game.
  • 4 total roster changes an entire game. Barring injury that is deemed real by neutral MLB trainer.
  • Inning should turnover in 1.5 minutes unless catcher is the last out of the inning.
  • HR, automatic, don't have to run the bases.
NFL Draft • May 01, 2017 04:20 PM

@JayHawkFanToo I was replying to an earlier post about Tyreik Hill.

Nice Streak... • May 01, 2017 04:18 PM

Here is where I see everyone's value:

  • Trade now:

  • Moose - Redsox or Angels good candidates

  • Vargas - Almost any team could use a Lefty in the rotation. Do it now before he breaks.
  • Cain - Injury prone player. Might be best to trade him now. A lot of teams that could probably use him.
  • Kennedy - He brings no value at the deadline. He isn't the type of pitcher that wins you a division. He is the type of guy that throws 200 innings in a season guaranteed. And a few teams could probably use that.

  • Trade at the deadline or an injury:

  • Hammel - His value goes up the most probably right at the deadline.
  • Hosmer - Can't hit right now. We just have to hope he gets hot before the deadline. Or a contender has an injury at 1B and thinks he is worth the risk.
  • Gordon - If someone has an injury at the deadline, I think we could unload Gordo. But we would have to eat a good portion of his salary. Probably half. But, we would get a few prospects if we were willing to do that.

At this point, we need to go a little bit 76ers and start "the process." Lets unload guys now and get a top 3 pick. Lets go for a 2-3 season rebuild after this year.

svi invited to combine • May 01, 2017 03:12 PM

@HighEliteMajor Definitely an interesting thought. I think that is true for some guys, like Dedric Lawson. You probably never know that he isn't a top tier athlete unless he flops in the combine like he did. The guy scores all day long, but he measured in at 6'7 instead of 6'9, doesn't have a 40 inch vertical and has poor lateral movement. So now he is pegged as a bad athlete.

In reality, he is absurdly coordinated, has the reach of a 7-Footer and knows how to position himself for rebounds like a Tristan Thompson or Kevin Love. I can't believe he will be in a KU uniform in 2 seasons... Thank you NBA scouts.

NFL Draft • May 01, 2017 01:52 PM

@Texas-Hawk-10 As far as I know, it was just the one. And he has supposedly been a model citizen since. And there isn't video of it, which helps in his case. Being able to visualize it doesn't help.

@Texas-Hawk-10 I think we will be a 4 guard team again regardless of how the roster shapes up here down the stretch. Our strength, regardless of who else we add, is our perimeter. We need to play to that.

I think Coleby could be looking for a more predominant role at a smaller school. Not sure. I'm not sure that it isn't contingent on landing Tilmon. I think Bill is just very upfront with the players. This is who we are recruiting and this is where you would fall in our lineup if we did land that player.

@Hawk8086 I don't know why other than I think he could probably start at another school. I'm assuming that it is contingent on landing Tilmon, but I could be wrong.

I just don't think Coleby's time here has gone as well as he thought it would. The knee injury probably changed a lot of things.

Heard from a pretty good source Coleby is probably transferring and Tillmon should be visiting soon.

Larry Bird • Apr 28, 2017 07:44 PM

@approxinfinity B-Rush would have had a very solid NBA career if he could have avoided major injuries. The year before he tore his ACL again he shot .450 from 3pt.and .500 from the floor. He also had a career high in PPG, APG and Blocks Per game.
He was just hitting his stride. 27 years old and would definitely be a key role player for teams. He would have either been playing instead of Andre Iguadala or Harrison Barnes during the past two finals runs for Golden State. That would have been cool to see. And then he would have gotten one of the many absurd contracts given out by teams this past summer.

One bump in the air on a layup and you're never the same...

@jaybate-1.0 Gettin old JB.

Larry Bird • Apr 28, 2017 07:08 PM

Pacers #1 overall pick next year without George. Would be a mess to deal with.

Balls twisted up by dad • Apr 28, 2017 04:44 PM

You mean they don't want to waist millions on a corny idea and work with a complete lunatic?

@dylans I'm sorry that I challenged your work ethic. I didn't mean it to come off that way when I wrote it. I didn't think it was a personal attack when I wrote it, and certainly didn't expect you to respond so aggressively to it. I just wanted to put in perspective what NBA players schedules are like.

I apologize for offending you. Sometimes things get a little heated during the offseason when news get slow.

@dylans Lol. I saw that last little bit on your original post before you deleted it... Again, hypocritical. Don't worry though, I don't have to justify my work ethic. I don't have anything to overcompensate for.

@dylans I had hoped you would respond that way. Don't you see how your response is extremely hypocritical? To assume that NBA players don't work hard, and attack them. Call them pussies and pansies. Yet the moment someone questions you, it is then a personal attack. And can't be stood for. I didn't even call you a name. I didn't call you a lazy person did I? You don't know what it is like to be an NBA player or how much work that really is, just like I don't know what you do or how hard it is.

You want to get back to the topic of the NBA and how to fix the problem of stars resting, I'm all for it. Make the season longer and get rid of back to back games. No more than 3 games in a week. And at least 3 days of rest for plane rides that change 2 time zones. I think that fully rested teams could also create more parody and intense regular seasons. If Westbrook can literally play every game 100% and not be fatigued, OKC might have a real chance to beat anyone. If the Spurs have rest built in, maybe they actually go 100% and break the regular season record.

Finally, if you want the players to play there needs to be a rule where they don't get paid for games they miss without being checked out by an official NBA physician. Teams need to get hit with a very expensive fine. And Coaches need to get fines, and repeat offenses get suspended without pay.

Any other thoughts you have on how to get players to play 82 games a season?

I don't think that Frank cuts the first round. And, if that is the case I hope he goes undrafted. That way he can go make a rotation for a good team. Much like Wayne has done. Wayne is setting himself up for a nice payday next season. Although, his contract is apparently a team option for $1.3M next season so he might get cut. But I think someone will pay him next year even if that happens.

@dylans You act as though they are being lazy. When realistically they are fatigued. If you want to blame anyone for the players not playing 82 games, blame the league. Expecting players to play back to back away games isn't realistic given today's data on fatigue. Not with the current value of contracts. And you think it is the player's choice? It is the owners protecting their investments. LeBron didn't just say, "i'm sitting out today" 5 minutes before tip off. I guarantee that they plan the rest days out well in advance. And it is for the health of the players. Something we should advocate instead of calling pussies.

The NBA caused their own poor TV ratings for creating a tough schedule that isn't spread out enough. ESPN made the mistake of scheduling games players could potentially rest. And a few Saturday night and Sunday afternoon basketball games didn't cause the collapse of ESPN. It was ESPN's poor foresight and stubbornness. Trying to monopolize sports and force consumers to stick to cable is what lost them 5 million subscribers. Putting on poor sports personalities lost them money. Forgetting about the rest of the country outside of NYC, LA, Boston and Chicago lost them subscribers just like it lost Hillary the election. Your anger toward NBA players for sitting out games is misdirected, 100%.

I have a question for you, have you had a day off in the past 9 months? A sick day, vacation or holiday? Because you know they play on Easter, Christmas and Thanksgiving right? Are you at work all 2080 hours you are expected to be? I bet you that they put in WAY more time and effort than you do at your job. That's why they are in the league. It is the reason that they are in the top .03% of their profession. Are YOU in the top .03% of your profession? I would seriously doubt it.

Howard watched a younger Lawson a few days ago. His twitter has some KU on it now. I think the Lawson experiment is going to pay some serious dividends.

Trepidation reduction through knowledge. • Apr 27, 2017 04:05 PM

As far as I know, if you redshirt, you cannot play in exhibitions. Although, one Lawson already did redshirt. So he will literally be just losing a year of eligibility while sitting out. I think that he might be able to play in exhibitions because he won't technically be a "redshirt."

@justanotherfan I think LeBron is every bit as good as Jordan was. LeBron gets crap for losing finals. Jordan didn't even make the conference finals in 1995.

  • LeBron leavs the Cavs and they go from 61-21 record to 19-63.

  • Jordan leaves the Bulls in 1992-1993 with a 57-25 record. The next year without Jordan the team goes 55-27.

  • Chicago goes 55-27 in 1993-1994. They lose Horace Grant and Jordan plays 17 games, they go 47-35.

Who had the larger impact on their teams success?

@dylans Joran is the greatest ever. But just barely.

  • MJ- 27.91 PER
  • LJ - 27.61 PER

Almost identical efficiency ratings. With MJ being slightly more efficient. Maybe Jordan wouldn't have retired twice if he wasn't getting burned out playing 82 games a year during the regular season...

@dylans Well, Jordan sat out 4 entire seasons... But anyways, you clearly have the old school look at this. I guess baseball players shouldn't ever sit either? I'd rather LeBron play until he is 42 years old and miss 8 games a year than play until he is 36 and play every single minute.

KU's Next BBall coach - a game! • Apr 27, 2017 01:00 PM

@KUSTEVE I think that KU fans are obsessed with Legacy hires because of Roy... "If we hire one of our own they will never leave!"

I personally think Haase will be too old though by the time Self retires. We hired Self at the ripe age of 41 and he finished his first season at age 42. Haase is already 43. Serious candidates will be guys that are currently in their mid 30's most likely. Because KU doesn't hire coaches that last just 10 years. We try to hire guys for 15-20+ years. This is supposed to be a coaches last stop.

By that logic, Aaron Miles would be the most likely Legacy hire. I think they are setting up FGCU to be Miles first HC Job. Dooley is going to get a better job one of these years and leave the program to Miles. And at that point, it is up to Aaron to become a top tier head coach.

Personally, I like Matt Lottich from Valpo as a guy to keep an eye on. He learned under the Drews (gross , I know) but did tie for 1st in the conference in his first season. He is also from Chicago, which is our best Pipeline for players. And, being in Indiana he knows how to recruit the Midwest. He played at Stanford, so I'm assuming he is no dummy. And, it sounds weird, but he has the look of a guy that can recruit. He's a handsome fella... But anyways, just a guy to keep tabs on. The last two Drew's to coach at Valpo have done pretty well...

Royals vs. Sox game 3 • Apr 27, 2017 12:38 PM

@dylans the problem is that Dayton hasn't capitalized on trade value. Several times.
- Wade Davis. Closers were getting outrageous hauls at last years deadline. We wait and wait and then Davis gets hurt before we can trade him. Instead of landing a top prospect and 3 ok prospects, we land one ok prospect in Soler.
- Lorenzo Cain. Pretty confident Cain will struggle to play 100 games and hit .300 this year. But, other teams would have taken the gamble that he would have. Could have gotten a couple of decent prospects for him this offseason. Now we have to hope that he can stay healthy until July and hit around .300. If he doesn't, his value is going to dip.
- Hosmer, I think that this one should be clear. Unload the supposed $200m man at the deadline last year. In the middle of a career power year, we could have unloaded him to the Blue Jays, Rangers or Mets. And it would have been a monster haul because they would have gotten to have him this year too. We are talking easily 4 prospects.
- Ian Kennedy, he is a bargain right now. Initially it looked like his contract was terrible, but he has over performed at this point. They are saying he probably won't accept his player option after this season and can get more on the open market. Which means he has some serious value to teams. But not as a down the stretch guy. You don't bring in Kennedy to get you over the edge. You bring him in at the beginning of the season because he is a 3.50 ERA guy for 200 innings. He is a steady hand that you roll out there every 5 days. Not a Johnny Cueto that you bring in to put you over the top. We could have unloaded him this offseason because the free agent market for pitchers was so weak. Probably for 3 or 4 prospects. If we paid half of his salary this year, maybe 4 or 5. That was how bad free agent pitchers were this offseason.

Small market clubs don't have the luxury to take risks on years where they only have a 3% chance of making the playoffs. They have to make trades when they can. And then be patient until the stars align and they can go for a championship. And you CAN'T let your players become free agents. They either need to be resigned or traded off before they have no value. As a small market club, you should never let a player go to free agency without something in return. If Hosmer is on our roster at the end of this season and we lose him to free agency, Dayton Moore should be fired. Simple as that.

@focojayhawk I use my parents DirecTV login. But, if I couldn't do that I would use Sling TV.

$50/mo gets you all the KU games not on TWC, NBA playoffs, NFL Redzone , and all the Royals games. Grab a set of Bunny ears for $20 bucks and then you get Chiefs games too.

@dylans Through 14 seasons LeBron already has more minutes than Jordan did through 15 seasons. If anything, the rest games allow us to see more of the stars.

My boss and I just talked about this. When was the last time you watched anything that wasn't a live sporting event on ESPN? I haven't watched an episode of sportscenter in months. All they talk about are big market teams or TMZ type scandals. They routinely have people say controversial things just for attention. It is now entertainment and not news. So, I'm glad they are hurting if I'm being honest.

ESPN made a fatal mistake years ago by not planning for online streaming. They are catching it on both ends now. Advertisers don't pay as much because it isn't worth the money and the direct consumers are dropping like flies because they either don't want ESPN as a channel or, like me, they can use someone else's password and stream games that way. So their outrageous TV contracts backfired hard. Don't expect the Royals new TV deal to be great. Or any future College Conference contract to go up exponentially. ESPN hedged their bets on cable. They were wrong.

Hell, we actually use the new HD version of "bunny ears" at my apartment to watch Chiefs games. Well worth $20

@BShark He definitely has better lateral movement than BG. At least it seems that way. Hard to tell until you put a D1 level guard in front of him.

The type of guy I'm glad Self is on early though. Back end of top 100 and clearly underrated. Multi-year project too. I'm sure he will be on campus for Late Night. Just hope we can land him early in the recruiting season.

@BShark Kind of seems like a lefty BG.

But maybe one that isn't a jackass.

And I expect UCLA, USC and Oregon to get on him now... Have to protect those recruiting grounds.

@JayHawkFanToo I do think that if Bill makes it another 10 years it won't be Haase. If it is 5 years, Haase is definitely in the running.

Bad feeling. • Apr 26, 2017 03:37 PM

Royals vs ChiSox -- Game 2 • Apr 26, 2017 02:43 PM

@AsadZ I think we have to wait on a few of these guys. Hoz has almost no trade value at this moment unless someone on another team gets injured. If Cain can continue what he's been doing, he is the type of guy you hold on until the deadline because every single team in the playoff race would want him. Teams would trade for him just so others wouldn't get him. Vargas could get traded right now for quite a bit. He is pitching great and a lot of teams could use a lefty in their rotation. We need to trade him before he breaks down again. Hammel and Kennedy don't have great value quite yet. As the deadline approaches, if one or both is around a 3.00 ERA their value will skyrocket. Trades are as much timing as anything.

But a few phone calls sure wouldn't hurt.

Matt Lottich would be my guess and hope.

There isn't a hardship waiver anymore right? It would have been a long-shot anyways, but it would be nice.

@BShark I'm sure that a man wearing a polo with three stripes approached his momma about all the benefits of going to one of those top tier schools I listed... Probably coincided with the Duke cooling. But was completely random...

@BShark I think he ends up at UCLA, Indiana, Louisville or KU. Just a hunch...

@BShark Probably just guys trying to get big 247 points and move up the leaderboards.

Allen to Nebraska • Apr 25, 2017 04:39 PM

@JayHawkFanToo I wish we would redshirt Lightfoot. But the only way that happens is if we land another post player. Otherwise we don't have the depth for him to redshirt. If we land Tilmon, I think it is a possibility.

And I agree that Garretts minutes go up, probably closer to 8 mpg with no Duval. Which is the most likely scenario.

Allen to Nebraska • Apr 25, 2017 04:36 PM

@KUSTEVE Not sold on him being a major contributor as a freshmen, especially with the group in front of him. He can't go left. He has a jumper that needs some work. And he will be adjusting to not having the ball in his hands like he has his entire life.

Vick was a similar story to Garrett and he only got 5 mpg his freshmen year too.
