Coaching Search/AD Thread • Apr 07, 2021 08:09 PM

I'll take Leipold, please and thanks.

Great tweet earlier - "this is going to come full circle. A Buffalo coach put us in this mess, and now one has to pull us out."

Okay I Know but Hear Me Out • Apr 07, 2021 07:24 PM

@BShark lol he is going to get another HC job after he spends a year in the studio.

Does Baylor's title make Self hungrier? • Apr 07, 2021 07:23 PM

5 of the 8 teams in the Elite 8 not only started a transfer, but had a freshman play 20+ MPG.

Houston, Michigan, USC, Arkansas and Gonzaga all had a transfer start and a freshman play 20+ MPG.

Baylor had 4 rotation players who were transfers in Flagler, Mitchell, Tchatchoua and Teague.

Houston had 5 rotation players who were transfers.

Gonzaga had Nembhard and Cook who were transfers and their best player was a OAD.

Arkansas had a OAD, a freshman and 3 transfers in their rotation.

Oregon State had two transfers in their rotation.

Michigan started a OAD and had two transfers in their rotation.

USC had 3 transfers and a OAD in their rotation.

The most original roster was UCLA - who only had their leading scorer as a transfer.

@drgnslayr Yes we can put together teams that gel with 1 and 2 year players.

LITERALLY every single elite 8 team this year had at least one transfer starting. KU is honestly behind the times by NOT having hit the transfer market harder than we did until this season.

Yesufu to KU (Drake PG Transfer) • Apr 07, 2021 06:49 PM

Tough to know who to play until we see the type of offseason everyone has I think. Because if Bryce has the type of offseason I'm hoping he is going to need 25 mpg.

And Yesfufu is going to eat minutes. And Ochai can be penciled in for 30 mpg. Reality is that KU IS BACK BABY. Nice to have guys that won't even see the court who would start at 90% of other schools again. Feels like it has been a while since that was the case.

Yesufu to KU (Drake PG Transfer) • Apr 07, 2021 06:16 PM

@BShark Yea I'm hoping for more of like a 15-18 mpg role for CB next season...

Yesufu to KU (Drake PG Transfer) • Apr 07, 2021 06:04 PM

The question now is how is the rotation going to work. If Bill plays 2 PGs a lot, then Braun and Thompson are fighting for a spot in the rotation I think...

I am starting to wonder if there is one more domino to fall.... (Besides Jossell). Feels like the backcourt is about one player too crowded unless Pettiford isn't gong to get much run.

Coach Hot Seat and Players to Poach • Apr 07, 2021 05:38 PM

@BeddieKU23 I'd be lying to you if I said I watched much of him. I just know he has the athletic ability and size that Bill has traditionally done well with.

Yesufu to KU (Drake PG Transfer) • Apr 07, 2021 05:36 PM

Averaged 23 PPG the final 9 games of the season shooting .469 from 3 on 64 attempts.

This is probably a better get than Tyson Walker imo. Both are solid, but I think Yesufu and Bill Self are going to get along REAAAAL well.

Yesufu to KU (Drake PG Transfer) • Apr 07, 2021 05:33 PM

Seriously this is such a good add. Can shoot. Can drive the ball a bit. WAY better athlete than you realize. Takes care of the ball.

Will say he is more of a secondary ball handler than a true PG. Very Frank in that way.

Coach Hot Seat and Players to Poach • Apr 07, 2021 04:58 PM

@BShark Yea I just figured they would ride it out with him and that he'd start recruiting like a mad man again.

Coach Hot Seat and Players to Poach • Apr 07, 2021 04:57 PM

@BeddieKU23 I second this - with the exception that I would totally take Jordan Brown if he was willing to take a bench role.

Coach Hot Seat and Players to Poach • Apr 07, 2021 04:34 PM

@BShark I really thought they were going to stick with him

2021 Transfer Talk/List • Apr 07, 2021 04:28 PM

@BeddieKU23 Honestly - would take.

@mayjay Who has said "Man we lost to USC because Dave." Where has that been said? I know I didn't say that.

I think the 30 point loss to end the season in the round of 32 is about all the justification I need to say I was right about this team and the strategy of playing through Dave though... When you predict something, and it comes true, usually that means you were right. But go ahead and hang an entire argument on one single line of a post.

I just want to reiterate - NOBODY I've seen is blaming the USC loss specifically on Dave. If anything people are blaming Self for force feeding him when that was simply not effective enough to make up for all of our other shortcomings.

Again - I am not saying that Dave is the reason we lost the last game.

Just making it clear, I don't think Dave specifically is why we lost to USC.

P.S. I don't think Dave cost us that last game by himself.

P.P.S. Really, Dave is not specifically the reason why we lost one single game against USC.

One final time - We didn't lose the USC game because of Dave.

Okay but seriously Dave isn't the sole reason we lost to USC.

@mayjay from Feb. 1

“ I honestly can’t believe how bad of a year it has been given how much we returned from last year.

Seems to me Bill put a lot of eggs in the “Dave can be an 18 and 10 guy” basket and that just didn’t pan out. And there was no plan B. But the reality is this team just cannot shoot the damn ball. Braun has gotten super soft. Wilson’s stroke is gone. Garrett and Harris are Garrett and Harris.

They don’t have a Moss or BG off the bench who can come in and provide a spark with a couple of set plays. They don’t have a PG who can force the action a bit. They don’t have a big man who they can throw the ball into and get buckets in a grind it out game.

This team is like playing chess with only pawns and knights. They have no pieces that allow them to attack any differently. Just the same thing over and over and if it doesn’t work, well it is going to be ugly.”

We have shit talked the entire team all year. All some of you read though is Dave and then for some reason you see red.

The point being made is that playing through Dave was not taking this team to the promise land. As @justanotherfan said, going five guards may end up
being disastrous, but it is about the only way this team would have a chance to make a deep run.

Then you focus on one game, and use every excuse with it for why we lost except for the reality that this team had a limited upside that a lot of us saw before the season even started, and certainly after the first half of the season.

(This conversation is giving me some KUBuckets in its prime vibes btw).

This is a thread from January.

Coach Howard • Apr 07, 2021 01:21 AM

@BShark they’ll be able to use letting KT go as a bargaining chip for penalties I think

Shout out to Baylor! • Apr 06, 2021 08:16 PM

@approxinfinity I still remember the Acie Law games. The Kevin Durant games. The Buddy Hield OT.

Basketball season is more fun when there are games to get hyped for. When you aren't playing every game with a target on your back, instead you are playing an equal.

Of course this also means that Bill needs to get his ish together a bit and get some talent in. Really strange feeling when we aren't the most talented team in the B12.

Shout out to Baylor! • Apr 06, 2021 08:14 PM

I don't want to hear any more Scott Drew slander.

And I reiterate he should be on the Bill Self replacement short list for whenever Bill hangs it up.

I'm honestly shocked it took winning a NC for Drew to finally get the credit he deserves for the Baylor turnaround. Scott Drew coached circles around basically everyone this year. He won by developing a roster. He won by playing man to man defense. And he won by playing to his team's offensive strengths.

Take the Gonzaga game as an example of just how good of a gameplan that Scott Drew can cook up when he has the talent to do it. He took Gonzaga's best player in the tournament in Timme and turned him into a negative. They found a way to iso Timme almost every trip down the floor and early enough in the shot clock that gave the guard time to work. It was brilliant. Defensively, the scouting report was nearly perfect. They absolutely wrecked Timme. Zags couldn't even get him the ball. They forced missed 3s. Look how badly they bothered Kispert. And they were able to guard the driver without help for the most part, which takes talent, but also good scouting.

Sure, maybe it was just the perfect storm and Zags played their worst at the same time Baylor was playing their best. But that isn't what they eye test told me last night. Maybe Baylor was really head and shoulders above everyone this year, and without Covid they go undefeated.

Either way, Scott Drew absolutely deserves all the credit in the world. He is one of the best doing the job right now. He's definitely a little quirky. He says some dumb things. Bill Self absolutely coaches circles around him if talent is equal. But he has done that to everyone which is why he has an almost impossible .816 winning record at KU.

(Also goes to show just how good that KU team was last season... Because this was basically the exact same Baylor squad as a year ago.)

2021 Transfer Talk/List • Apr 06, 2021 07:26 PM

@BShark I still can't get over that dunk against WSU. Probably the 2nd most memorable play of the tourney

2021 Transfer Talk/List • Apr 06, 2021 06:54 PM

@BShark Would be interested to see how Bill would use Yesufu - since he is sort of a small SG more than a PG.

But the guy can flat out score the ball.

2021 Transfer Talk/List • Apr 06, 2021 06:21 PM

@Marco Someone in the NBA would have to want him... Coaches can't recruit their way to success there.

Unless he gets offered a job he can go win a championship with I don't see the NBA move happening for him. I do think that you may see him leave for "personal" or "health" reasons. At which point he will transition into the new Larry Brown.

Bill Self Emperor of Kansas • Apr 06, 2021 06:12 PM

@drgnslayr I think as a coach, Nike makes UK the better job.

If you were asking me what makes sense from an Athletic Department standpoint - sure I think a lucrative deal obviously is more important. But Shoe Co. dictates so much of your success and UK is the Nike darling.

2021 Transfer Talk/List • Apr 06, 2021 02:30 PM

@BShark He's the fall guy. You can't cut your fall guy without having a backup fall guy. It may be the 2nd most important thing good programs have.

2021 Transfer Talk/List • Apr 06, 2021 01:59 PM

@BShark KT has been here with Bill through it all. Just don't see him going anywhere.

2021 Transfer Talk/List • Apr 06, 2021 12:03 PM

@BeddieKU23 I’m still a bit dumbfounded why we didn’t get involved here.

2021 Transfer Talk/List • Apr 05, 2021 09:01 PM

@FarmerJayhawk appreciate it

2021 Transfer Talk/List • Apr 05, 2021 08:51 PM

So does Bishop have two years of eligibility or did the extra year of eligibility only apply to seniors? I'm confused how that works.

2021 Transfer Talk/List • Apr 05, 2021 08:46 PM

I think it is time to quit counting Curry. Is there a reason he hasn't signed an LOI?

2021 Transfer Talk/List • Apr 05, 2021 08:02 PM

It is hard to figure out what on that UK roster is garbage and what was just Calipari being in way over his head this season. Not a single player for them appeared to be statistically efficient.

Bill Self Emperor of Kansas • Apr 05, 2021 05:04 PM

@drgnslayr One word why UK is a better job than KU.

Nike.

Bill Self Emperor of Kansas • Apr 05, 2021 04:28 PM

@FarmerJayhawk Why don't you like Davis?

2021 Transfer Talk/List • Apr 05, 2021 04:20 PM

If they are thinking he is a 4 (which upon review of his tape he probably is) Jalen's spot is in trouble. He's better than Jalen.

2021 Transfer Talk/List • Apr 05, 2021 04:19 PM

I don't see how you talk that guy into a bench role.

KU 2010-2020 Decade Team • Apr 05, 2021 04:15 PM

Only basing off of how much fun I enjoyed watching them play while at KU

  • Dotson - I don't know that I've seen a faster player in a Kansas uniform from memory. Just a really solid/fun player to watch. So sad we didn't get to see him play that last season... Or that he didn't return for this one.
  • Devonte - smoooooth. Absolutely a joy to watch. Smart. Talented. Really really miss this dude.
  • Josh - Outside of maybe Frank, nobody played harder. Dude knew he didn't have to play even 5 minutes to get drafted in the Top 5 and yet he played his ass off here. Just a damn shame that team didn't have a better C than Landen and that Doke got hurt. Pretty sure that team could have won the whole thing.
  • T-Rob - Just my favorite player. Attitude. Hustle. Toughness. Absolute killer. Dude carried a team on his back and gave a UK superteam a scare. He's also just an amazing story and I wish his pro career had gone a little bit better. Going to Sacremento out of the gate was a death sentence. But man do I love T-Rob.
  • Doke - This dude only got to play like 2 seasons and still leaves KU the all-time dunk leader (a record that will stand forever and the only guy who ever may be able to break it at KU is Wilt himself). 242 dunks. Man was he fun to watch. https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/kansass-udoka-azubuike-has-found-the-formula-for-efficiency-dunk-a-lot/ ↗

  • BMac - I'm not sure anyone at KU has ever had a prettier jumper. I was at that ISU bank to take it to OT game and man was that a time to be alive...

  • Withey - Idk why but I loved this dude. The fake Jeff Withey account may have something to do with it... I do know that I remember watching him the first game after he was eligible from his transfer and I thought "holy shit this guy is AWFUL." And then, he got better. And better. And better. And then you were like "wait is Jeff Withey good?" Students loved him. He blocked the every living crap out of a lot of shots. He was that goober that everyone loved to root for.
  • Embiid - my favorite NBA player at the moment. Only Bill Self and John Calipari tell kids they aren't coming back for a second season when they want to. Roy and K would have taken him back... But the Embiid story is one of the best. Literally gets dunked on so hard by Tarik Black over the Summer he about quits. Had his bags packed and everything. Then he told Bill he wanted to Redshirt (LOL). Then he tries not to go pro (LOL). All of that self-doubt from THE BIGGEST TRASH TALKER IN THE NBA. Just really, really, really fun dude. Great player. Generational talent.
  • Svi - The KSU buzzer beater. The Duke shot. Both very memorable. But really what I remember the most about him was him giving Bagley FITS on the defensive end on that FF run. I still can't believe he was over here playing at 17. It is almost hard to believe he is only 23 years old. (Mitch is only 1 month younger than Svi btw).
Bill Self Emperor of Kansas • Apr 05, 2021 03:13 PM

@tundrahok Being able to recruit that area with basically no other blue blood program in the area is a huge advantage for UCLA.

Some are transfers, but they have 9 players on their team from southern California.... That type of fertile recruiting ground is just not really fair. They also have the Nevada and AZ prep schools to try and poach from.

It is a good job. While they've missed the tourney, they have also been to four final fours in the time Self has been here.

2021 Transfer Talk/List • Apr 05, 2021 02:13 PM

@BShark Would be nice if true...

2021 Transfer Talk/List • Apr 05, 2021 11:33 AM

@BeddieKU23 Curry not coming has been in the back of my mind

2021 Transfer Talk/List • Apr 05, 2021 01:53 AM

@Woodrow if they don’t land TyTy I would guess that is what they try to bring in.

Between TyTy, Pettiford, Martin and Clemence they should shoot better.

I also think banking on actual PGs running the offense combined with expected individual improvements we should be okay. Not great, but good enough.

Jalen, Braun, Ochai and Bryce are all capable of shooting better than they did last year.

2021 Transfer Talk/List • Apr 04, 2021 04:24 PM

@BeddieKU23 yea I just haven’t seen a big man play well year 1 under Self except maybe Embiid. Perry and Cliff were coming on late. Bragg showed some potential (obviously that changed). Aldrich probably would have but he was stuck behind 4 studs. Morris brothers were okay early.

So it definitely isn’t unprecedented that Zach could come in and contribute... I just have heard some guys who think he is coming in and starting and I think he’s a ways off from that.

You are probably right that he gets a little run at the very least.

On the bright side, I think any PT he gets he will have earned. So if he’s getting run it isn’t because we don’t have another option.

2021 Transfer Talk/List • Apr 04, 2021 03:04 PM

There is a reason we have Curry, Martin and Bishop (probably) coming in. If Bill felt good about even one of the freshman bigs I don’t think we would see us scooping up this many post players.

2021 Transfer Talk/List • Apr 04, 2021 02:55 PM

@BeddieKU23 I think he will be great here.

But I think he will need at least a year in the program first. He can absolutely shoot it. But he is pretty below the rim guy and his post game leaves something to be desired for a Bill Self guy.

If you watch his tape next to Matthew Hurt HS tape I think you can sort of see the gap between similar players.

2021 Transfer Talk/List • Apr 04, 2021 12:35 PM

@jayhawks2010 just go watch Clemence tape. He isn’t ready for this level yet IMO either.

He’s slow and he’s build like a slim Jim.

Bishop is long and athletic and he scores at a 70% clip without trying to do too much. Great bench piece.

Coach Hot Seat and Players to Poach • Apr 03, 2021 05:08 AM

@Crimsonorblue22 phof

@mayjay so your argument is that he would play better next to better players even though he played next to better players before and it didn’t look good?

Coach Hot Seat and Players to Poach • Apr 02, 2021 09:33 PM

Really thought Moser could get a better job

@mayjay Who on that list would you NOT take over Dave? (With the caveat that you have to assume they too would have at least been here a 3rd season).

Maybe Chenowith and Kaun?

@mayjay okay but you can agree that maybe, perhaps, Dave's FG% isn't exactly a key indicator of him being good last year?
