@BShark Harris is the ideal backup PG - with Senior year starter potential.
@BShark Not even sure we need him to improve. But 10 minutes a game with him doing what he was doing there at the end of the season will be great. Part of what made him stand out last season was that he had skills nobody else did. About the only guy on the whole offense who could pass the ball.
Ideally that shouldn't be the case next year... But he can help to bridge the gap and let Bill play 2 PGs the entire game if he truly wants to.
@BeddieKU23 I am hoping we see big things from Bryce next season.
Realistically I think we want to see CB end up the super sub. I know guys don't lose starting spots often under Self, but I'm hoping this one is an exception.
Ideally:
- PG: TyTy 15/ Harris 15/ Pettiford 10
- SG: Bryce 25/ TyTy 10/ Pettiford 5
- SF - Ochai 28/ CB 12
- PF - Wilson 25/ Martin 8/ CB 7
- C - Dave 25 / Clemence 10 / Adams 5
Minutes totals:
- Tyty - 25
- Bryce - 25
- Ochai - 28
- CB - 19
- Dave - 25
- Jalen - 25
- Harris - 15
- Pettiford - 15
- Clemence 10
- KJ - 5
- Martin - 8
That's a pretty deep rotation. I think when it got later in conference and definitely come tourney time you would see basically no minutes from one of the 3 bigs between KJ, Martin and Clemence. And then probably one of either Pettiford or Harris would get almost no run.
CB really thrived his freshman year in that lesser role, I think that is what we want to see.
Ochai was more consistent than this board would lead you to believe. And if he improves at all that would be fantastic.
If we don't land TyTy I think we will see us go after a transfer who is a sniper to bring off the bench in a very Isaiah Moss/Brannen Green type of role. And you'll see a dogfight between Harris and Pettiford for that starting spot.
Ideally someone takes a big leap forward this offseason. Dave, Bryce, or Ochai if I were guessing to be the most likely. CB could do it. Jalen still has room to grow. The Martin dude could surprise I think.
One thing is becoming clear to me though - Bill wants to get back to 2 posts and 2 guard lineups. I think there is plenty of PT to be had for Harris, Pettiford and another PG. The team went from overloaded on wings to a much more traditional construct which is nice to see.
If this does indeed end up being the final roster - I think you will see a more traditional Bill Self type of pace than this past year was. The offense should be more efficient. The defense should be about the same. I thought Dave made a big stride from a basketball IQ point later in the season and so I do expect him to have a better start to the season next year.
All in all, I think this team will be much better. Especially now that they should have a little bit better ball movement by 1. always having a PG on the floor, and 2. adding the ability to play 2 PGs at once which Bill has really done well with in the past as far as generating offense.
I'm pretty excited for this bunch. Even if they don't land TyTy.
@KirkIsMyHinrich And then for the next five years they have to keep his skeleton on the sidelines. I don't make the rules.
@BShark With the idea of a heavy 2-guard rotation I would think.
Should help recruiting. Puts any rumors to bed. 2022 already off to a good start too. Bill about to go tf off.
@KirkIsMyHinrich I think it can happen. But his usage will have to go down.
Dave taking 10 shots is just not a functional offense. (And that is nothing against Dave).
Just commission his statue already. The man will have been the coach here for over 2 decades when it is all said and done.
He won't coach to 74 - but if he did just so everyone knows - he would pass K for all-time wins at his current pace. I swear I think it is part of the reason K keeps coaching.
@BShark Direct middle finger to the NCAA and I couldn't be happier
@mayjay Oh come on haha.
You had to disqualify - Sims (135 FGA), Boone (176 FGA), Samuel (160 FGA), Bradford (145 FGA), Jones (143 FGA), Tchatchoua (123 FGA), Ledee (91 FGA), Kuath (118 FGA), Santos-Silva (192 FGA), and Davion Mitchell (283 FGA) to get Dave to be 2nd place behind Solomon Young (190 FGA) who would be 11th and Dave 12th in Field Goal Percentage.
Serious question - do we think he is able to guard 3s? Like could we go big some stretches next season? Would be interested to see what a lineup with him, Martin and Dave could do. Should be able to rebound well. Can still space the floor for Dave to do work, but you have an additional rebounder in there to make up for how poorly Dave rebounds for his size.
I don't think Jared Haase will leave Stanford unless he is fired. He is a California kid so he may be basically at his dream job already. I honestly would be somewhat upset if we looked at him when Bill left because what has he done at Stanford? He hasn't made the tourney yet while there.
@BShark I want to get back to two guards.
And if that means some dudes who played last year find the bench it is what it is... I think CB or Bryce could be a 2nd guard if they worked on a few things. But for now neither has shown the capabilities to do things a second guard would do, which is attacking the rim and making timely passes.
@tis4tim Baylor is about due to take a step back. Scott may even have to go back to the zone next year once Butler and Mitchell are gone.
@KirkIsMyHinrich Obviously offseason rumors afloat...
The reality is that we are getting to the end of the predictability of the offseason at this point I think. We pretty much knew the 3 transfers would be transferring 4 months ago.
Now it is all speculation. "Why would KU be talking to X if they have this Y? Y must be thinking about leaving."
@BeddieKU23 Meh. Tech knew that if he had success there he would end up at UT one way or another. And you know if KU had a vacancy first we would have thrown fistfuls of cash at him.
He even negotiated his buyout to be less if he moved teams in the B12 lol.
@KirkIsMyHinrich Would be interested in this one
@BShark I don't think we need to complete the prophecy on this one...
@BeddieKU23 Why aren't you a fan? I mean I'm not a fan because I think he will do great at UT.
He's a texas alum. Could be his dream job. And he will be able to recruit to UT just as well imo.
It's done. Was done basically a year ago imo. Today it is just finalized.
To me - it seems like Bill is trying to get back to a 2-big lineup but wants one athletic enough to guard. Not sure where Jalen fits on that squad.
Just throwing out how the roster is shaping up and the rumors that are floating around.
Wonder who makes sense to take over that job? Obviously Chris Beard's ears perked up
Lol why did he announce on April Fool's day though??? I'm like triple checking everywhere to make sure
Roy Williams retires... Never thought I'd see the day.
@BShark Oh shit. This would basically mean bye bye Jalen huh?
@BShark You still thinking we are in on Bishop? He really is the ideal add imo. Can guard all 5 spots on the floor. Can run the floor. Nearly automatic bucket if you guard him 1 on 1 in the post.
@BShark WOULD TAKE. But I don't think we do after taking Cam
@approxinfinity I think he has the possibility to finish over .500 at the rim which would make him a NPOY under Bill Self... Just saying
@Fightsongwriter My theory is that he needs to spend some time in the Bill Self toughening box... And if we had been any deeper last year he would have.
I have mixed feelings about how this all played out. Feels like Bill used the kid, tbh. Should have gone somewhere he may actually have a shot at playing some day and redshirted a year. Feels like Bill sort of robbed him of that...
But good luck to him. We hardly knew ye
@BShark I'll be here all week
Seems like in the mix up, there might be some Josselling as well.
I'll give everyone a hint. It rhymes with methro guscadin
@BShark he be lookin springier in this one than mine
Straight up this is what I thought Mitch would be by now. 5 years here and he never added the 3
I would think this puts the kibosh on Bishop coming though
6'9 and can let it fly like that from 3. We've had worse... There would have absolutely been a role for him this season.
Frontcourt went from thin as single ply tissue paper to being as deep as the Grandy Canyon.
@BeddieKU23 A teeny-tiny bit more consistency from him would go a long ways too
@BeddieKU23 Wut? Are you saying he is going G-League or we're going after him?
@BShark Yep. Pettiford too good to let walk. Bird in the hand.
Also who knows what is going on in the background with TyTy's recruitment. I have concerns to say the least...
@BeddieKU23 Love the Carsen Edwards comp.
To me he looks like a dude who can play from day 1.
@drgnslayr Leadership occurs naturally. Bill did his job and got this team schematically in a place to succeed.
But when there isn't a talent on the team capable of taking over, there will not be a leader on the basketball court. Everyone knows that the leader in basketball is the guy you want taking the last shot. The guy who you look to get tough buckets when things aren't going well.
I don't care what happens at practice. Or what the person is like off the court. The leader on your team is whoever you want to have the ball with 5 seconds left when you need a bucket.
We just didn't have that guy.
@BShark Well good for him... But also booooo
@BShark Why? .400 from deep.
@BShark 9 NBA players on that team lol. NINE.
2012 UK team probably could beat them too.
Better is a tough thing to figure out though... This Gonzaga team has at least 5 future NBA players on it.
@BeddieKU23 The one thing USC has going for them is that I still think Mobley has yet to really "try."
If he had one of those games where he blocks 5 shots and locks up Timme they could do it. But I wouldn't bet on it.
@BeddieKU23 They are just so solid everywhere. You can't help off of anyone without giving up an open 3 to a capable shooter.
You can't stop them in transition because they have Suggs (and the others aren't too shabby either).
Kispert shooting .460 from deep means you literally can't help off the guy no matter what because giving up a 2 is better than giving up an automatic 3. His gravitational pull alone changes how you can defend them.
Timme has the ability to hit a 3, and is money from the FT line, so you can even run him up to the top of the key and get the opposing rim protector out of the lane with no way to help.
They are just a nearly perfectly built college roster and they have an amazing coach to top it off. They are even fun to watch because they play beautiful basketball.
This is one guy I'll miss. I think he has all the potential to go be a stud somewhere else where the coach will let him make mistakes and give him run.
Reminds me a lot of how I felt about AWIII leaving. A guy you knew was capable of playing well at this level, but just can't do the things Bill expects from his players on the defensive end of the floor. And that is okay.
I actually think - oddly enough - because it is similar with AWIII - Syracuse would be a great fit for him. Throw his length in the zone and then let him go to work on offense.
