@stoptheflop I missed the first drive, but the reason the offense is conservative is because Carter Stanley can't pass. He makes terrible decisions and gets spooked too soon. That second INT was an absolutely horrible decision by Stanley because he missed his window to hit Parchment. This really makes me wonder just how bad MacVittie looked in camp if he couldn't beat Stanley out.

There's no reason for opposing defenses to respect KU's passing game as long as Stanley is the QB.

This is the difference between Stanley and Bender last year. Bender protected the football, made smart decisions, and was at least a good enough passer that defenses had to respect that. If I'm a defensive coordinator scheming against Stanley, I would have all my players within 10 yards to focus on the run and play man defense on the receivers exclusively because Carter Stanley isn't beating anyone with his arm.

@nuleafjhawk Park at West campus by the rec fields and ride the bus or walk.

New Hudy! β€’ Sep 06, 2019 05:22 PM

@KUSTEVE Hudy came from UConn where she helped the Husky men win 1999 and 2004 national titles and the UConn women 4 titles in five years from 2000 to 2004.

Bill Self did not make her. Hudy came to KU with 6 national title rings while she was the S&C coach for UConn basketball.

Hudy may not have made Self, but Self certainly did not make Hudy either.

@nwhawkfan Nijem's peers considered him a top 5 S&C coach in the NBA. When your peers at the highest level feel that way about you, that's a huge positive about the man's credentials to perform the job well.

Coastal Carolina Chanticleers β€’ Sep 03, 2019 05:33 PM

@FarmerJayhawk Is he still calling the plays though? If not, then it wouldn't be surprising if they're a more pass focused offense.

@Gorilla72 last year they ran more than they passed at about 2:1. They’d like to run it a lot more often.

Coastal also has a different head coach this year than last year. We don't know yet if the new coach wants to keep that ratio or if he wants to pass more than they did last year.

Dorian will be in this neck of the woods Wednesday and Thursday but hopefully it turns out to the ocean. Might delay their travel if it hangs around too long.

CC moved over to Conway, SC for the week today. Their prep shouldn't be affected too much this week.

Coastal Carolina Chanticleers β€’ Sep 02, 2019 11:04 PM

CC is worse than ISU. I'm not worried about the OLine long term. I think they just need a couple of games to settle into their new positions in the case of the right side of the line. The left side was just fine last week.

The DLine is going to struggle because they don't have the personnel to run a 3-4 up front. Kamara is a good pass rush DE, but KU doesn't have a true NT or run stopping DE that's also necessary for a good 3-4. Those are positions where going the JuCo make more sense and would pay quicker dividends at this point.

I have a feeling KU is going to be terrible against the run most of the year since the B12 has a lot of teams that run the ball well and isn't the pass happy league many still associate with B12 football.

KU being a 10 point favorite now does support the belief that ISU is a better team than CC is and KU should have an easier time this week.

The line I'm going to be curious about is next Friday at BC. I'm guessing it'll be 17-21 point range in favor of BC, but it'll be telling if it's much different than that.

ISU game chat β€’ Sep 02, 2019 10:51 PM

@stoptheflop Even though most of the OLine played last year, several of those guys (center and right side) are in new positions so there is a little bit of a learning curve. I'm not too worried, but it'll take a couple of games for their chemistry at their current positions to gel together.

ISU game chat β€’ Aug 31, 2019 09:08 PM

@kjayhawks Those are two bad teams. From the little bit I watched, I think ISU is better than both CCU and EMU.

ISU game chat β€’ Aug 31, 2019 08:12 PM

@mayjay Yost won more games, that's my tie breaker.

Too bad KU didn't keep Yost or Kansas football would likely have a very different and much more positive history that it does.

B12 struggling a ton today ISU in the second OT with UNI and WV down at the half 7-3

JMU is the second ranked FCS team. They could beat quite few FBS teams, including several P5 programs.

@Gorilla72 2nd best, Fielding Yost went 10-0 as Jayhawks head coach.

Can Les Miles borrow Katie McClure from the soccer team to be the place kicker this year?

ISU game chat β€’ Aug 31, 2019 07:21 PM

Parchment is going to be a star. Best player on offense for KU today by a lot.

How does every team we see have better QBs

Changing offenses every year limits the development of QB's much more than people realize. The announcers keep bringing up Stanley being in his 5th offense in his 5 years. That's why our QB's don't look better.

They are spending every spring learning a new system instead of growing in a system. I'm hoping Koenning stays for awhile so the system is consistent and the QB's can actually develop in the spring instead of learning a new system for the next several years. If that happens, we'll see the QB play make real strides forward.

Yea they have to just put the best athlete back there even if it limits play calling

Scaling back the playbook isn't the issue with Locklin, he's just not ready yet to run a B12 offense.

Not too surprising on either account. ISU has historically struggled with UNI and WVU isn't a good team this year.

ISU game chat β€’ Aug 31, 2019 07:09 PM

And knocked them out of FG range too.

ISU game chat β€’ Aug 31, 2019 07:08 PM

ISU game chat β€’ Aug 31, 2019 07:07 PM

@Kcmatt7 I think Torry Locklin can be that guy, but he's not ready quite yet. Maybe by midseason.

ISU game chat β€’ Aug 31, 2019 07:04 PM

ISU's QB is better than Stanley.

ISU game chat β€’ Aug 31, 2019 06:59 PM

That sack is why I'm not a Stanley fan, not enough awareness to throw the ball away when being pursued.

ISU game chat β€’ Aug 31, 2019 06:58 PM

@kjayhawks We're just not good enough yet.

ISU game chat β€’ Aug 31, 2019 06:54 PM

@kjayhawks We're not a good team yet. These players don't know how to finish teams off yet.

Hopefully we get there under Miles, but it's a process and won't happen overnight.

Also, don't forget this game was only about a 4 point spread so it's not like KU was expected to blow ISU away.

ISU is pretty comparable to Nicholls St. so even hanging on for a win today is an improvement over last season.

ISU game chat β€’ Aug 31, 2019 06:42 PM

Awkward looking tackle on that catch.

ISU game chat β€’ Aug 31, 2019 06:36 PM

@Kcmatt7 That toss dive play is a staple of a Les Miles offense so we'll probably see a lot of it this year.

ISU game chat β€’ Aug 31, 2019 06:34 PM

That jet sweep to Parchment is going to be a good play all year. Can't wait get Pooka back and run a fake jet sweep a run it to the other side with Pooka.

ISU game chat β€’ Aug 31, 2019 06:31 PM

I really like Parchment

We may need to switch kickers πŸ˜‘, 4 points left the board off of Jones leg.

That 49 yarder he missed isn't a gimme even with a good kicker at the college level.

Jones pushing everything left is concerning though and a switch probably needs to happen for next week.

ISU game chat β€’ Aug 31, 2019 06:15 PM

Don't think Liam Jones is keeping the place kicking job for long. If he does, FG's are going to be an adventure all year long.

ISU game chat β€’ Aug 31, 2019 06:12 PM

Nice to actually see adjustments made from the 1st half.

ISU game chat β€’ Aug 31, 2019 06:12 PM

@mayjay It actually did, Sosinski had a catch in the 1st half.

ISU game chat β€’ Aug 31, 2019 06:02 PM

Parchment is going to be a good player for KU. I've liked his skill set since the spring game. He's the potential deep threat for KU if we put in a QB with an arm to push the ball down the field.

ISU game chat β€’ Aug 31, 2019 05:59 PM

McCullough bailing out the defense there.

ISU game chat β€’ Aug 31, 2019 05:55 PM

Defense looking shaky to start the half.

ISU game chat β€’ Aug 31, 2019 05:45 PM

Traditional Les Miles power I pounding Herbert up the middle has been the most successful offense so far. Hopefully more of that with some play action mixed in.

Finally a good shot of the crowd. Alumni side looked pretty full, endzone looked pretty empty, couldn't see the student side except the area where the band is. I would guess the crowd is 30,000 or so.
