Need to throw more on 1st and 2nd down to open up the running game. Offense has been too predictable this half

WEST VIRGINIA TODAY • Sep 21, 2019 09:49 PM

Passing game hasn't been enough of a threat to open up the running game.

WEST VIRGINIA TODAY • Sep 21, 2019 09:48 PM

KU needs points before the half.

WEST VIRGINIA TODAY • Sep 21, 2019 09:46 PM

Defense has been pretty good after that opening drive.

WEST VIRGINIA TODAY • Sep 21, 2019 09:42 PM

KU has to be better on third downs.

WEST VIRGINIA TODAY • Sep 21, 2019 09:35 PM

Stanley also has to have better awareness in that moment and tuck it and take the loss on that play.

WEST VIRGINIA TODAY • Sep 21, 2019 09:34 PM

That's a bullshit non review. Stanley's arm was clearly moving forward when the ball came out, should've been an incompletion.

WEST VIRGINIA TODAY • Sep 21, 2019 09:19 PM

Nice downfield block by Charlot on that TD as well.

WEST VIRGINIA TODAY • Sep 21, 2019 09:18 PM

Offense looks better with the wind.

WEST VIRGINIA TODAY • Sep 21, 2019 09:16 PM

When did Stanley learn how to scramble?

WEST VIRGINIA TODAY • Sep 21, 2019 09:14 PM

Curious to see what the offense looks like with the wind at Stanley's back.

WEST VIRGINIA TODAY • Sep 21, 2019 09:12 PM

@Crimsonorblue22 Carter Stanley passing into the wind so there's that.

WEST VIRGINIA TODAY • Sep 21, 2019 09:00 PM

That INT looks like it's going to be overturned.

WEST VIRGINIA TODAY • Sep 21, 2019 08:51 PM

Need more depth on that toss dive.

WEST VIRGINIA TODAY • Sep 21, 2019 08:47 PM

KU's run defense looks like it's in for a long day based on that first drive.

If Bill Self were suspended for a year... • Sep 21, 2019 07:14 PM

Marcus Garrett is the best defender in the B12 and a top 5 defensive guard nationally. His offensive game may not be anything special, although he is an above average driver, he doesn't have to be a great offensive player because of how elite his defense is.

Agbaji's health is a legitimate question mark. Because of the type of injury it was (shins), it's not out of the question that it's going to be a chronic issue and rob everyone of seeing him reach his full potential just like we never got to see Wayne Selden reach his full potential because of his knees.

This team has flaws and they're the same flaws as last year. KU doesn't have a ready to go back up PG other than Garrett. This team still isn't going to be good at shooting 3's. Doke's health will also always be a question mark because of the freak injuries and games he missed his one "healthy" year.

WEST VIRGINIA TODAY • Sep 21, 2019 04:36 PM

@stoptheflop I just went to the NCAA's website.

WEST VIRGINIA TODAY • Sep 21, 2019 02:24 PM

WVU is a bad team. 119th in total offense, 92nd in scoring offense.

They are also 74th in scoring defense and 61st in total defense.

KU's offense is ranked 78th in total offense and 86th in scoring offense.

KU is ranked 36th in scoring defense, 65th in total defense.

Mcride gone • Sep 21, 2019 12:34 PM

@BShark I haven't found anything that indicated Harris was redshirting due to academics. Based on what I read, it sounded like the redshirt was due to how late he was arriving and that McBride was going to be the back up PG so there weren't any minutes available.

@chriz In the eyes of the NCAA, Michigan's Fab Five years don't exist.

19-20 Schedule • Sep 19, 2019 08:43 PM

@mayjay It's been $5 as long as I've had my subscription to ESPN+ which was pretty soon after it launched.

19-20 Schedule • Sep 18, 2019 08:52 PM

@Kcmatt7 The other cost involved in that is an internet provider. Depending on those options and deals people have, streaming is not guaranteed to be cheaper at this point for everyone.

My mom still has a bundle deal with Comcast because that's still cheaper for what she needs at this point than dropping cable.

If I factor in my internet, I'm paying about $60 for internet, $60 for PSVue (whatever the tier below the premium movie channel tier is called), half of whatever the middle tier is for Netflix, $5 for ESPN+, and nothing for Hulu because that's a free add on from my Spotify subscription. I'm paying between $130-140 per month including internet so not bad. My mom has about 100 more channels than me and is paying about $150 per month including internet.

Trouble? • Sep 16, 2019 08:06 PM

I don't disagree with @HighEliteMajor in theory on this issue because the NCAA does claim to be about amateurism and one of the key aspects of that is not getting paid for your skills and when players agree to their Grant in Aid for their athletic scholarship, they are agreeing to abide by NCAA rules.

The underlying issue that's leading to stuff like the ShoeCo investigations, Ed O'Bannon case and the California law is that the NCAA is either unwilling or unable to fully enforce their own rules. I'm fairly certain it's the latter and that the NCAA is unable to fully enforce their own.

To me, the NCAA has to make a decision in the near future about either enforcing their rules or adapting their rules so they can be enforced or they risk shutting down in the not to distant future.

If the NCAA continues to not make significant changes, that bill that California is working on will get passed in some form in every other state and the NCAA will have a losing battle on their hands to remain in existence.

The NCAA absolutely has to figure out how they can adapt and evolve if they don't want universities and conferences creating a new governing body for collegiate athletics in the next 20 years or so.

Trouble? • Sep 16, 2019 07:50 PM

@FarmerJayhawk The NCAA cannot sell a jersey with player's name while that player is an active NCAA athlete. Once that player is no longer eligible through turning pro, or exhausting eligibility, jersey's with a player's name on it are able to be sold through licensed retailers. I have a Paul Pierce KU throwback Nike made a few years ago that I bought from Lids and a shirt with Kirk Hinrich's name and number that KU sold when they retired his jersey in 2010.

I don't know percentages, but everyone would get some piece of the pie from the player, school, apparel manufacturer, the retailer, to the NCAA due to the licensing agreements in place.

I know the retailer is the one getting the biggest slice of that pie though with everyone else getting a small percentage.

As far as players themselves, they're allowed to keep their game worn stuff if they choose to. The watch party I was at on Friday night had a special celebration to hang up a Tyler Patrick game worn jersey in that bar that he donated himself. He could've chosen to sell if he wanted to and kept the money for himself, auction it off and keep the money himself minus the auction fee, or could've donated it and written off the cost of the jersey (probably $200 or so).

This is an area I'd like to see the NCAA change in. Allow players to sell their game worn memorabilia if they choose to. Make a list of approved ways to sell items and let kids make some money that way. I'd imagine there would have been a fairly big market for that blown out shoe of Zion's if he'd had been allowed to sell or auction it.

justanotherfan said:

Carter Stanley is a caretaker. KU still needs an upgrade, but if he can keep teams from completely loading the box to stop the run, this KU team can move the football. QB play just has to keep defenses honest so the backs can do their thing.

This is why I was probably the biggest supporter on here of Peyton Bender last year. It wasn't because he was an elite QB because he wasn't. It was because he took care of the football and was a good enough passer to keep defenses from stacking the box. Bender allowed the Pooka and Herbert to be Pooka and Herbert.

The first two games, Carter Stanley was awful and running game suffered because of it. If Peyton Bender was the QB this year, KU would be 3-0 and those first 2 games would've been 20+ point blow outs as well. Unfortunately Carter Stanley has never been a consistent passer or good decision maker, so we have what we have this year.

The defense will be solid enough to keep KU in most games. The defense last year only gave up 30+ points 4 times all season, I think it'll be similar this year. KU also has one of the best running attacks in the B12 behind Pooka and Herbert. The question mark is the QB play and passing game. If the passing game is average, KU will be able to win some games this year because KU has a better receiving corp this year I believe. KU didn't have big body receivers last year, this year, Parchment and Lassiter are stepping up along with the TE's. Andrew Parchment is an all B12 receiver so KU has some weapons. It's just a matter of whether or not Stanley can find those weapons.

There was a time when the Olympics didn't allow professional athletes to compete because they were about amateurism. That hasn't been the case for a long time now.

I do think the NCAA should allow student athletes to earn extra money by using their likeness. I would put some restrictions on that such as not doing endorsement deals whether national or local. If a kid wants to sell off a game worn uniform for some extra money, go for it. If a kid wants to do an autograph signing at a local business, go for it.

Selling uniforms and doing autograph signings are ways for kids even a small level schools to earn some extra cash because a lot of D2 and D3 schools are in pretty small towns where the team is a big deal and kid could sign autographs at a local grocery store or restaurant and make $10 a person per autograph or auction off a jersey for $200. Even lesser know players at big schools could do stuff like that. That's no life changing money, but it's enough to have some spending money.

I do also agree with others who say the NCAA needs to enforce their rules equally and fairly across the board, but the reality is the NCAA isn't capable because the don't have the authority to investigate certain issues.

Using KU specifically, we all know a major violation happened because of Cliff Alexander and his mom with that loan. The NCAA couldn't prove anything though because they don't have the ability to subpoena bank records so the case fizzled out with nothing happening.

The same thing is going to happen with Zion because the NCAA doesn't have any legal power and they have to depend on people's willingness to comply after the fact when there's no reason to cooperate.

The NCAA doesn't have the ability to enforce their own rules and that's the real issue here. The NCAA either needs to figure out ho to enforce their rules or they need to alter their rules to the point they can enforce them.

I think the NCAA needs to come up with a list of acceptable ways a student athlete can profit off their name and likeness and allow student athletes to do that. I know my ideas on this would need a lot of tweaking, but I think basic concept of having an approved list of ways to earn money would go a long way.

I think the NBA getting rid of the OAD rule will help a lot as well with this issue.

ESPN+ question • Sep 16, 2019 03:18 AM

@Marco 6 wins is possible, but I don't see it happening. Carter Stanley is too inconsistent for me to have enough faith in him to win 4 games in the B12.

Am I watching the Chief or the Jayhawks? • Sep 16, 2019 03:12 AM

@drgnslayr We've seen an F game and an A game from KU within 6 days as far as the offense goes. The defense appears pretty much on par with last year's defense minus the ability to turn teams over. It isn't a great defense, but they'll keep KU in most games this year.

The offense on the other hand appears like it could be extremely Jekyll and Hyde this year. If Carter Stanley plays well like he did against BC and the passing game is a factor, KU could beat anyone left on the schedule except for probably OU and Texas. If the CC Carter Stanley shows up, KU isn't beating anyone left on the schedule.

The current offense is very much a hybrid of a typical Les Miles offense and a typical Les Koenning offense. The Power I is a Miles staple along with that toss dive play that Herbert broke one on to start the second half. The zone read, RPO, spread stuff that opened up the running game was very much a Les Koenning style offense.

We'll probably still see some head scratching game management issues because it's Les Miles and that's not always a strong suit of his. I also think we'll still see teams load up against the run and force Carter Stanley to make the defense respect the pass.

Bottom line is that Les Miles will make KU a better football program. We saw a glimpse of what that can look like on Friday night. We also know this is still a major rebuilding project that will have unexpected hiccups along the way like the CC game. We will continue to see growth over the course of the season and I don't think 4-5 wins is out of the question this year for KU. I believe we'll see KU have another 2-3 games where the offense is clicking and gives KU a shot an some upsets. I also believe we'll see 2-3 more games where the offense lays an egg and makes people question the progress being made. I think we'll also see 2-3 other games where KU is somewhere in the middle and competitive, but not good enough to finish the job.

@drgnslayr KSU has looked pretty good so far this year. Best bets would probably be WVU, Texas Tech, TCU, OSU, ISU, KSU, Baylor, Texas, then OU. That would be my guess from most likely to least likely for KU to win.

West Virginia and Texas Tech haven't been very impressive this year. KU tends to play TCU close just about every year for whatever reason so I'll never rule that game out regardless of how good TCU looks. OSU is similar to TCU in that they've played horrible against KU pretty regularly so that potential is always there as well. We always pick ISU and KSU as likely upsets, KU usually no shows those games. Baylor has typically blown out KU so I wouldn't bet on that one. Texas and OU are far and away superior to everyone else in the league and I'd be shocked if KU stayed within 20 of either team this year.

So glad Keegan doesn't write for the LJW any more. I met him a handful of times and he always came across as an elitist a-hole. Still trying to claim KU screwed up by firing Mangino. Mangino lost the respect of most of the locker room and was going to have a mass exodus of players after the 2009 season had he stayed. What also gets ignored about that investigation is that the Arist Wright issue that triggered the investigation wasn't a one time deal. It was the culmination of years of Mangino not respecting his players, KU staff and faculty, along with others in positions of authority. Mangino brought everything that happened to him on himself because he didn't have the ability to show respect to other people. He was a guy who lacked self control and needed anger management, but never admitted he had those issues while at KU.

He also never bothered to develop or recruit a successor to Reesing so KU was going to awful in 2010 regardless of who was coaching them then.

Guy's let's see , try • Sep 14, 2019 03:19 PM

KU did not control the broadcast rights to the game last night. The broadcast rights belong to the conference of the home team. That's why the game was on the ACC Network.

As for the game itself. Last night was a glimpse of the future of Kansas football. That was by far the best game Carter Stanley has played wearing a KU uniform. He mostly made the right decisions, he mostly made good throws. That was the difference between last week and last night.

The OLine wasn't the issue last week. Carter Stanley was the issue. When a QB is a non threat like last week, defenses will stack the box. CCU played 9 in the box most of the game because Stanley didn't give them a reason to respect the passing game.

BC took that same approach to start the game last night. They focused on stopping the run last night and Carter Stanley made them pay after the first couple of possessions. Once Stanley started completing some passes, that's when the running game opened up and Pooka and Herbert took over.

The defense has been solid all year so far. The biggest difference is they aren't creating turnovers like last year.

KU probably doesn't play that well every week, but it was great to see a glimpse of the future under Miles. Also, Andrew Parchment might be the best receiver in the B12 this year.

Guy's let's see , try • Sep 13, 2019 01:55 AM

As head coach at Alabama, Nick Saban went 2-6 in the SEC his first season. Even great coaches struggle without adequate personnel.

Without a good QB, KU's playbook is severely limited. Miles and Koenning have never been guys who run a flashy offense so not having a QB who can complete a pass more than 5 yards down field is crippling the offense more than the OLine's struggles which to me are more because of Stanley being a bad decision maker on the field.

Les Miles won 10+ games 7 times in the SEC West and only had 1 losing SEC season in that time running the basic offense he's trying to put in place at KU. The man knows how to win football games and build programs. Les Miles laid the foundation for Mike Gundy at OSU.

KU currently does not have the roster personnel to run Miles offense the way he wants it run. David Beaty recruited for a spread offense and that's not what Miles and Koenning run.

It's going to take time to get those players in place and developed. It's not an overnight process and the 2020 recruiting class shows Miles wants to build it through the HS ranks which will slow down the process because those linemen need time to physically develop.

As far as Miles and his clock management, I said the day he was hired that anyone who watched Miles at LSU already knows that's never been a strength of his and never will be. It's frustrating, but anyone surprised by it clearly didn't know much about Miles beyond his record at LSU and what his strengths and weaknesses as a coach are. And yes, KU will lose some of the recruits currently committed because KU can't sign 26 players in December. The players who have committed to KU aren't surprised by KU dropping a game like CCU because they aren't stupid. They know KU has been a dumpster fire the last decade and yet they still chose to commit to Miles and attempt to rebuild KU.

Les Miles will make KU a better football program by the time he leaves here. It won't be an overnight process because it takes time to change offensive philosophies and bring in the correct personnel.

If anyone wants to accuse me of being biased about Miles and Koenning, damn right I am. Born in Louisiana and LSU was the first school I cheered for and one of the 3 schools I considered attending along with KU and Oklahoma. KU is the only football program I've seen play in person more than LSU and there is nothing in football like a Saturday night in Death Valley. As far as Les Koenning goes, his dad was my HS football coach and his son was HS teammate while Les Jr. was an assistant at A&M at the time.

Les Miles is the man for the job, just need to be patient and allow him to build the program because unlike basketball, it takes more than one recruiting class to revitalize a program.

New Hudy! • Sep 11, 2019 09:06 PM

The reason for comparing a S&C coach to a head is because they have the second largest impact on a team. When teams are in the off-season and coaches are restricted in their contact with the players, the S&C coach fills that authority role because the emphasis during that part of the calendar is on the weight room.

It has nothing to do with how replaceable a person is because even Bill Self is replaceable at the end of the day.

The comparison is merely that the S&C has a similar level of authority over a program during the off-season. In football, during the winter between the end of the season and spring football beginning, it's the S&C coach that's largely in charge of the program during that down time. It's similar with basketball during their off-season as well where the S&C coach is the authority when the coaching staff isn't around.

New Hudy! • Sep 09, 2019 12:11 AM

@dylans Comparing her and other S&C coaches to a HC isn't too far off actually.

During the off-season when the coaching staff either can't work with the players or is extremely restricted in that regard, it's the S&C staff that's running the program during those times because of how much time they spend with those players.

Coastal Carolina Chanticleers • Sep 08, 2019 05:43 PM

@kjayhawks Any recruit that decommits isn't decommitting because of yesterday. KU currently has 26 commits, and can't sign a full 25 man class anyway. KU is going to lose recruits to better offers and not enough space to sign everyone.

If a player is flaky enough to decommit because of one bad game, then that's probably not a recruit worth signing in the first place.

Coastal Carolina Chanticleers • Sep 08, 2019 03:02 AM

@Kcmatt7 Have a good night, come back to reality tomorrow.

Coastal Carolina Chanticleers • Sep 08, 2019 03:00 AM

@kjayhawks The OLine isn't the issue. Stanley is so inept, there's no reason to respect KU's passing game as long as Stanley is QB so teams can load up against the run.

This is why Bender so important last year. He was a good enough QB that teams had to respect his passing which in turn opened up the running game a lot more.

Coastal Carolina Chanticleers • Sep 08, 2019 02:55 AM

@Kcmatt7 Keep lying to yourself because you're pissed off.

If you want to keep claiming I'm making excuses, then go ahead and ignore the multiple times I've already said this is a bad loss due to not having a QB.

Coastal Carolina Chanticleers • Sep 08, 2019 02:44 AM

@Kcmatt7 It's not semantics because the Sun Belt is an FBS conference and has won plenty of FBS bowl games. The conference has even had plenty of huge upsets much bigger than tonight's game.

There's nobody trying to claim this isn't a bad loss, but this wasn't a loss to an FCS school.

Coastal Carolina Chanticleers • Sep 08, 2019 02:35 AM

@Kcmatt7 Coastal isn't FCS any more, they've been FBS for 3 years now and are a member of the Sun Belt.

Coastal Carolina Chanticleers • Sep 08, 2019 02:33 AM

@kjayhawks We should have, but when you change philosophies on offense, it takes time to get the personnel in to run that system and KU doesn't have the personnel to run what Miles and Koenning want to run on offense at this time.

It sucks because these are growing pains that look much worse when you're already a bad program.

Coastal Carolina Chanticleers • Sep 08, 2019 02:30 AM

@Kcmatt7 Lawrence didn't begin the season as the starting QB though last season for Clemson, Kelly Bryant started the season at QB. Similar deal with Hurts and Tua and Bama. Tua didn't play much his freshman year until the very end when he won the job.

Coastal Carolina Chanticleers • Sep 08, 2019 02:27 AM

@kjayhawks A competent QB would make a world of difference with this team. That really is the biggest thing they're missing on offense

The defense also doesn't have the personnel to run a 3-4. They don't have a NT to plug the middle or a big DE to stop the run. The LB's are solid and KU's secondary one of the best in the conference.

That 4th down sequence when Miles used the last two timeouts happened because he has zero faith in the kicking game right now.

A QB is the biggest game changing player in team sports and KU doesn't have one right now.

I'm not gonna call for any heads yet, but there should be a change at QB because Stanley is a back up at best.

Coastal Carolina Chanticleers • Sep 08, 2019 02:09 AM

@kjayhawks Have you watched West Virginia yet? They might actually be worse than KU.

I'm also never going to rule out upsetting TCU because KU plays them close basically every year for whatever reason.

Coastal Carolina Chanticleers • Sep 08, 2019 02:07 AM

@kjayhawks Les Miles is a far superior coach to David Beaty. The biggest issue is KU doesn't have a QB right now. Carter Stanley is a back up QB and I've been saying that for 4 years.

Hopefully Miles hands the reigns to Torry Locklin at some point this season because he's the future at QB.

Coastal Carolina Chanticleers • Sep 08, 2019 02:03 AM

Now I'll call game after that third failure on 4th down.

Coastal Carolina Chanticleers • Sep 08, 2019 02:00 AM

@kjayhawks Not yet, but I'm not holding my breath either though.

Coastal Carolina Chanticleers • Sep 08, 2019 01:45 AM

Les Miles does many things well, but clock management has never been one of his strengths as a coach.

Coastal Carolina Chanticleers • Sep 08, 2019 01:43 AM

Another terrible 4th down call. That also shows how little confidence the staff has in the kicking game right now. No other reason not to kick a FG there with 14 minutes left.

Coastal Carolina Chanticleers • Sep 08, 2019 01:23 AM

Not a good 4th down call. Just sneak it!
