@ajvan :100: Let's go #BIFM2!
@KansasComet you're right man. They had the edge psychologically coming in, and while we had a solid plan second half, as @ajvan said in the other thread, JJ and Devonte never got their swag back.
@Texas-Hawk-10 maybe.
@nuleafjhawk appreciate you guys immensely. We came over to this site Frank's freshman year, hard to believe. This year has been a real joy talking through Frank's senior POY barnburner tour and talking about Selfs evolution as a coach with you all.
@HawkChamp K had 9 McD Americans on that 2015 title team didn't he? How many did Self have that year? 4. Cliff, Perry, Oubre, Selden.
@HighEliteMajor You know where I stand on Self. Love him. Respect him immensely. Agree wholeheartedly that he has evolved this year.
We both know that he is wondering what he might have done differently, he said that he would "look at a few things" yesterday when ambushed by a rude question about his Elite 8 losses, and here are two things I wonder if he is wondering about, even if he couldn't necessarily do anything about it.
- Would subbing Vick in for Devonte have made a difference?
- When our shot isn't falling, and we don't have big strong physical bigs, the entry pass is way too turn over prone. So then we drive. Why were we driving straight down the lane and attempting layups on the strong side, only to let Bell get a career high in blocks? Why no drive and dish, why no back cuts? Should we drive baseline more in that situation to be able to use the rim against the shot blocker? Could the weave be evolved more into a drive and kick weave in the lane to get us more inside looks?
Criticizing Self for having a losing record in the Elite 8 is undervaluing the fact that he has gotten us to the Elite 8 consistently in his tenure here. I just wish he hadn't lost to Oregon in the Sweet 16 last year, or Mercer in the first round 2 years before that. Oh wait, that was Coach K.
@Blown hmm that's an interesting thought.
@Blown yeah that's my first thought too. Hope he does, that would be a great place to start.
@jayhawk-007 you said it well. I'm curious to see where Tyler lands with his sports management degree.
@jayballer54 no acknowledgement of the other team, just patting his program on the back. That in combination with his earlier comments about not liking Kansas, and his kids' self-absorbed attitude in their post-games. That Bell kid just sat there talking about how he thought he was really good. Then the Dorsey kid talked about how good they were to beat Kansas in what was pretty much a home game for Kansas. Maybe it's easier to win when all you focus on is yourself. There may be something there.
Me, I like the obligatory acknowledgement of the other team's efforts, not talking about how good you think you were in the game, and not crapping on the other team, even if you're ignorant to the fact that you're doing it.
- For helping Frank become the finest college player in America.
- For helping Frank get a 4 year degree.
- For helping Frank become a good man and father to his kid.
- For helping Landen develop into a quality big with a solid post move and best FG% in the B12.
- For never giving up or saying one defeatist thing when Udoka went down.
- For giving an interview after a heartbreaking loss and conducting yourself with dignity, throwing no one under the bus, appreciating the efforts put forth on the other side, and helping me to get a grip and accept it.
- For bringing Tyler on board these 4 years so that you could work your ass for this program and still help your son know you better and be close to you.
- For recruiting likeable guys every year. Guys we can look forward to getting to know even when the finest KU point guard of this generation now must move on.
- For being open minded enough to, out of necessity, turn your offensive philosophies on their head this year and allow the guards to be great. It is your ability to mask our weaknesses that make us all see our team as an unbeatable juggernaut each March.
@tulsajhwk BOOM! After our loss, TBS showed clips of disappointed (and defeated), great coaches talking in their post-games this tournament. It was an excellent reminder: there can be only one, and all of these coaches are our there recruiting their asses off and eating, sleeping and dreaming X's and O's.
Also, the horrible attitude by Altman and his guys in their post game interview was a stark contrast to the dignity and grace that Self showed in the interview he gave after a heartbreaking loss. We have got a Hall of Fame coach, helping kids learn how to be good men, and hella good basketball players along the way. He gives the program everything he's got and does it the right way.
Bill Self is the greatest Jayhawk of our generation. Nobody is more invested in this program. Nobody has contributed more to its success. And we are very, very lucky to have him.
Bed beckons. Spring yard work starts tomorrow. Night guys.
@BigBad For sure, that was a big 20 and 10!
I want Roy or Cal to beat Dana Altman and his guys badly.
Then Frank Martin (#BIFM2!) can finish off the winner.
Self's comments:
Matchup problems.
JJ's fouls.
Shot selection bad.
Got sped up.
Didn't execute.
But we fought. Put ourselves in position.
Ball didn't bounce our way.
But that was due to them. They were really good.
FM and Landen have been great ambassadors for us. But this will not define them.
Jordan Bell had a lot to do with it. Tyler Dorsey. Dillon Brooks. We tried to do it the best we know how. We just didn't respond well today.
Self interviewed now.
@globaljaybird thanks buddy. you're right :smile:
@HighEliteMajor Whats your thought about not seeing Vick in lieu of DG at all in 2nd half? I was a little surprised we didn't see more Vick personally. Maybe attitude assessment on the bench, DG seemed more composed? Needed the 2 PGs?
@HighEliteMajor :100:
@HawkChamp lol, you're suggesting recruiting someone other than Frank, someone who is bigger. Please man, please.
Oh well. I give up on being angry. Just sad.
Clark Kellogg, screw you. "It's very simple, the best team won"
@RockChalkinTexas I was thinking about Udoka too, when their classless painteater was having his way with us inside.
@globaljaybird I'm heartbroken.
Wow, 3 sh--heads in postgame interviews. I guess as the coach goes, so goes the team.
And I'll miss JJ too. Damn.
@BeddieKU23 Svi and Graham are definite?
Oh well. Agreed, fun season. Will miss Frank and Landen.
It's alright Landen.
Where was that drive and kick all game?
Is over the back a fantastic play? STFU Reggie.
Down 6! Sasha in the crowd! He likes it!
Down by 9!
@autohawk other than Devonte's 0-6 our starters arent shooting that badly.
Really disappointed that Devonte's shots aren't going in. Unfortunately we can't afford 1 and done possessions on bricks from Devonte at this point. Would like to see Vick get some run.
Feels like the chance for a comeback is slipping away.
That's right.. so many empty possessions by Oregon. We figured em out, now let's draw blood on the other end!
Going reverse Josh! Nice!
Dude is pushing frank off with his opposite arm
@BigBad yeah surprised no Bragg, good call.
@BShark exactly. If this is it, standing at the pearly gates, GIVE FM THE BALL!
@BeddieKU23 he's lost his mind.
Sit Devonte down. Put Vick in!
@approxinfinity ugh.
See Devonte, no saran wrap. let's go!
Better Devonte.
Coleby got up for that.
daughhhhhhhh Devonte's shot not falling
Don't need to force them into mistakes on d, they're cooling down, just stay locked in and make some buckets.
