OUR DAILY THREADS FOR JAN 23:

Picking the Elite 8 - @lulufulu85

I want to add a thread for today. Would anyone care to venture a very premature guess at this years elite 8 teams? I say that because IMO the field is still too wide open to pick just 4 teams out of the 20 or so teams that could possibly make it to the Final 4. But, there are some really good teams out there that have started to separate themselves from the pack. Back in November during the time KU played in the Champions classic with Dookie, Michigan St and Kenstinky, I made a guess that that line up could be the '14 Final Four. shakes head Nope, not gonna happen. And without further ado, but a lot of rambling because I work the night shift and I have been up since 6pm yesterday, I will start with my 8 teams whom I think at this point in the season will make it to Elite status.

McDermott VS Embiid VS Wiggins - @drgnslayr

John Gasaway, over at ESPN, wrote an op ed called "Top 25 Players in College Hoops", where he ranked current players based on his own value system for how they impacted the college game instead of how NBA scouts rank players for draft status, based on their potential at the next level.

Gasaway concluded that the top player in college basketball is Doug McDermott. Joel Embiid finished 9th and Andrew Wiggins finished 21st.

I was unable to finish reading his story because I don't find enough value in the ESPN media to warrant paying to read their opinions. But... I'll go ahead and post my own ideas around this story and the rankings that came from it

Previous days:

Jan 22: Why Self Said FTs Probably Won the BU Game and Some Implications - @jaybate

Self said FTs probably decided the game. Why?

First, KU achieved its apparent defensive objectives. It took away the rim game by guarding hard inside the arc and fouling shots taken there, especially off offensive rebounds, while at the same time giving short jumpers to a team that did not shoot those short jumpers very well. Essentially, KU took away one of BU's two strengths--inside scoring.

BU's other strength, trey shooting first went red hot the first half, then cold the second half to shoot back to its usual still decent trey average by end of the game.

Jan 21: Andrew's New Mentor; Kobe Bryant - @drgnslayr

I caught the following post today and want to offer up some new ideas:

@Blown - "Wiggins is just a Gorillas Grip on the ball away from finishing those drives. Here to hoping Hudy has a hand strengthener in her fantastic arsenal"

I think Andrew needs to reexamine his game. I'd like to sit in a video room with him and go over file footage of Kobe Bryant's NBA career. This is the player that Andrew needs to model his game after.

Jan 21: FLOOR BURN AWARD: KU vs BU - Jan 20 - @drgnslayr

I think we can make this FLOOR BURN AWARD short and sweet...

Bill Self enthused by Frank Mason’s defense vs. Bears ↗

Frank Mason certainly gave Kansas University’s basketball team an offensive boost off the bench in Monday’s 78-68 victory over Baylor.

The 5-foot-11 freshman’s nine points off 4-of-5 shooting and six assists against one turnover helped the Jayhawks ultimately conquer the Bears’ zone defense. Yet it was the backup point guard’s ‘D’ that had Kansas coach Bill Self beaming in the wake of KU’s fifth conference victory in five tries.

Newell: KU recruit Alexander among contenders for top ranking ↗

LAWRENCE — Kansas basketball commitment Cliff Alexander, the fourth-ranked player in the class of 2014 according to Rivals.com, might not be done making his way up the recruiting rankings.

Rivals.com national recruiting analyst Eric Bossi says there’s a possibility the 6-foot-8 power forward could leap up to the top spot when the final rankings are released in April.

Dodd: KU, MU, Wichita State players make midseason Wooden Award list, but Joel Embiid is snubbed ↗

The Wooden Award released its midseason watch list of 25 players on Wednesday, and Kansas, Missouri and Wichita State were all represented.

But Kansas freshman center Joel Embiid, one of the fastest-rising talents in college basketball, was not on the list. That was perhaps the biggest snub in a group that included KU freshman Andrew Wiggins, Missouri guard Jordan Clarkson and Wichita State forward Cleanthony Early.

ESPN Freshman Math: Joel Embiid ↗

Center Joel Embiid has been excelling at Kansas shooting up draft boards. Take a look inside the numbers to see just how historic his freshman season has been.

Embiid, Wiggins crack blogger's list of today's Top 25 college players ↗

In a recent blog ranking the 25 best players in college basketball today, ESPN.com's John Gasaway placed two Jayhawks on his list but perhaps not as high as many of you might expect.

He put freshman center Joel Embiid at No. 9 and freshman wing Andrew Wiggins at No. 21.

New Orleans cuts ex-Jayhawk Taylor ↗

New Orleans — Former Kansas University guard Tyshawn Taylor has been waived by the New Orleans Pelicans, according to Yahoo!Sports. Taylor this week was traded by the Brooklyn Nets to New Orleans, along with cash, for the rights to Edin Bavcic, a 29-year old Bosnian big man who was originally drafted back in 2006 by Toronto. A free agent after he clears waivers, Taylor will be able to sign with any team. It has been rumored he could be bound for the Los Angeles Clippers, who need a guard following an injury to Chris Paul.

Board Format Discussion • Jan 23, 2014 05:20 AM

@icthawkfan316

Jaybate - that all sounds great. I guess the only thing that is giving me trouble navigating is that the posting seems to be all over the place. On kusports.com, we all usually gravitated towards the daily Bedore article. That was the main forum. For example, I posted something today thinking I would get responses (I posed a question to posters), but I think the thread went stale and the majority of the conversation went elsewhere. I do like the notifications here, and being able to follow our favorites.

This is a great point so I ported it over from another thread. So I thought that aggregating the posts into a single post would aggregate traffic through a single post, and it did for the days prior to the daily threads post's inception. However, those days were around the Ok St game, which we've all been waiting for, so it may have been anomalously large for that reason as well..

So, assuming traffic stabilizes and drives through the daily news post for all the news stories, you could post on that thread for the equivalent of the Bedore story, to address a common audience. We didnt want to do this on the daily threads post, because we wanted traffic to discuss on the threads themselves, so we locked the main post.

I'm not sure if it will play out like we intend, but that was the reasoning.

It does concern me that with separation of a lot of threads, it can fracture readership, and theres the problem that threads can go dead quickly. We've increased the volume of threads we were generating recently I think, which was part of the impetus for moving away from having to update the home page, instead pushing it into a thread.

So I wonder, if we are diligent about updating the main daily posts and daily threads post as a community, with all the posts linked to from there, how would this affect where people write comments?

Board Format Discussion • Jan 23, 2014 03:48 AM

So the current issue we're experimenting with is the layout on the front page. The previous layout was unsustainable because it's a manual effort to populate it with the stories. We wanted to move the ability to drive traffic through a static layout into threads to make it more dynamic and utilize the features teh board already offers.

So at first, we put the links in the daily news posts, but this felt cluttered and people's posts from previous days were getting buried.

To try to address this, we split it into its own daily threads post, and tried to tightly couple this with the daily news post for the day, as well as link to previous posts of the same type, thus allowing chained browsing.

However, this approach was intended to allow everyone with thread rights (if you see thread tools button at the end of this post, you have it) to assist in adding stories on the top post of both of the sister threads (news and daily threads) . We got a little bit of help from a few guys (thanks @dylans and @wishawk -- I see you guys!) on the news post. This was great. I think we still need a standards doc so everyone can feel comfortable assisting. Sorry this is still forthcoming. We got sidetracked brainstorming on the daily threads format.

So, I think my action item is to still generate the standards doc for the two formats, which can evolve if we want to change it up some. I'd like to know if you guys are interested in pitching in on modifying the top posts for those two threads as the stories come in? Let's be honest, if the answer is no, then we'll have to rethink this.

I intend to generate scripts that will create the initial post for both at midnight, allowing us then to come in behind it and fill in the template with content.

Board Format Discussion • Jan 23, 2014 03:37 AM

Let's talk board format!

This can be divided into three and possibly four categories - the enhancements for nodebb, bugs to report to nodebb (keep in mind we're a version behind so its possible bugs/enhancements will be addressed in the new version), board usage standards (this includes front page html and daily threads and pinning/locking threads, as well as whether news stories should be moved from inside threads up to top post, general etiquette stuff), and delegation of responsibility if people want to pitch in on something besides the awesome stuff you guys are already writing.

Obviously theres a sweet spot between fascism and communism, or something like that.

So keep / change / stay the same, here's a place to talk about it.

Yeah, it's a good idea. I think we have an old thread or three around. We should probably spawn a new one.

Know it's a shake up on the front page. Eager to hear opinions all around, and would like to frame the discussion within the context of the issues we're trying to solve. Will write a thread tonight when I have time.

Thanks for bringing this up jb. Also, to add your post to the threads top post, hit the pencil icon next to it. That icon doesn't show in portrait mode on phone. Phone in general for doing the markup on those posts is a little hairy. I know you're big on your iPhone. I dont mind jumping in and adding the links when I can but I don't always have access to a desktop.

Guys, essentially any bugs/issues/enhancement requests you have that have to do with the framework of the site will feed over here:
https://github.com/designcreateplay/NodeBB/issues?direction=desc&labels=enhancement%2Cbug&milestone=6&sort=created&state=closed ↗

We have several threads that we've discussed stuff on, but I don't have the bandwidth to commit to feature development for nodebb, so I'm basically feeding them, and they've been pretty responsive.

However, the decision to not nest comments is a deliberate one on their part. Their philosophy revolves around the use of other features that allow you to track who has tagged you in their post, spawning the tag by using the reply button, etc. So in my mind, this feature would be high effort on my part, as I'd be going it alone and committing to forking their repo and maintaining that fork, meaning we'd have potential merge conflicts any time we wanted to upgrade from their repo, with low priority because nothing is technically broken. Maybe the alternative would be that the way people communicate in the nodebb format could be improved, and we could certainly request those enhancements from them.

The discussion about how we organize stuff like the daily posts is something we should have, I think, as thats fully in our control, and I'd like to see us leverage a group approach as effectively as possible, so if bskeet and I get hit by 2 buses at the same exact time hundreds of miles apart, thing don't go bump here (until the lights go out, but you know what I'm saying). So far, we haven't been able to get thread moderators and authors involved in adding their posts to the Daily Threads posts. Granted its been only a couple days, but this is what I'm trying to facilitate.

Thoughts?

Jan 21: Our Daily Threads • Jan 22, 2014 12:21 AM

This thread is for adding the daily threads for Jan 21 when they come in, and subsequent days will have their own daily threads posys. Authors of threads, please don't be modest and add your stories to the daily threads post for that day so we can drive traffic to your posts.

@jaybate 1.0 Thanks, we'll see if it works out for us. Big props to @bskeet for hashing this out with me. Lets keep an eye on it for a few days and see how it plays out, and make sure we can settle into a sweet groove.

Newell: Selden's hustle play sparks KU in 78-68 win over Baylor ↗

LAWRENCE — The ball was heading out of bounds, and Wayne Selden Jr. had a decision: make it look like he was trying for it, or really, truly go for it.

He chose option No. 2. And Allen Fieldhouse wasn’t the same after that in No. 8 Kansas’ 78-68 victory over 24th-ranked Baylor on Monday night.

Dodd: KU beats Baylor 78-68, remains atop the Big 12 at 5-0 ↗

LAWRENCE — The ball was bouncing toward the sideline, a little orange sphere destined for the lap of Kansas fan Mark Brandmeyer. The play was over. Perry Ellis had knocked the ball out of bounds on a fast break.

It was Baylor ball. Kansas led by seven points with 11:30 left.

And then Wayne Selden started running. One step, then two. Then a kamikaze dive over a row of Kansas boosters sitting the front row. Over a table. Over a bottle of coke and water. Over a pair of young kids in blue T-shirts.

Tait: Live Blog and Analysis ↗

It was not the game we've come to expect when Kansas and Baylor hook up in Allen Fieldhouse, but the end result was the same.

Rather than knocking the Bears out with a devastating first-half run, the Jayhawks had to grind through the first half and take control in the second, with things like hustle plays, loose balls bouncing their way and ice cold Baylor shooting really benefitting the home team in a 78-68 victory.

Guys, I moved the homegrown threads up and made them more prominent in this post, and the post from the 20th, I put these at the bottom as yesterday's threads. Think something like this works better? When we get something we like, I'll write up a post about standards, so we can make sure anyone with thread rights can jump in and know how to stay consistent in the format.

@jaybate 1.0 @blown @HighEliteMajor valid points about the threads being hidden. The prob is that the updating of the front page is a manual effort for someone will full admin so I was hoping to make the threads accessible faster by having it linkable by anyone with thread rights. Note the thread counts of the daily posts have gone way up so the traffic is funneling as we would expect. We could intersperse or invert the order of the main links Put the user threads on top of the news stories as they come in....

@bskeet nice work.

@other people with thread rights - I'm not going to have access to computer until much later either so if anyone can grab the stories it'd be a great help.

@bskeet nice post!

Guys, I've added the daily threads to this main daily thread instead of posting them all individually on the front page. I think this makes the flow cleaner and more manageable. I'm going to try to do it this way going forward unless there are objections.

These are the perceived advantages:

  • This way, anyone with thread admin rights can assist in adding posts to the daily list by editing the main post, meaning we're not as behind the ball linking our threads to the front page until when bskeet or I get a chance to do so.
  • You can find postings by the date of their post more easily.
  • The front page is cleaner and doesn't get massively long fast.

@ParisHawk Holy moley! You have the touch!

I wouldn't trade Embiid at this point. First off, that's like asking if you'd trade your child for another child. Embiid is more than just a talent now. He's a Jayhawk and a joy to root for, attitude very much included.

Secondly. He's a Bill Self big man with a ridiculous skill set that can be an icon and a beacon for Bill Self and for KU. He's a personal accomplishment for everyone invested in KU to show how very good our big men can be. That's worth a lot.

Thirdly I will gladly trust in Self to surprise us with the next great rotation on top of having Embiid this year. At this point Embiid is a known commodity and a fantastic kid to have.

I do appreciate the difficult hypothetical though and as you said this is probably the obvious answer that everyone will give.

@jaybate 1.0 you need a personal statistician to test out your hypotheses! Great read.

@ParisHawk that's fantastic!

LAWRENCE, Kan. -- Andrew Wiggins is from Canada, Wayne Selden from Massachusetts and Joel Embiid from the African nation of Cameroon. None of them grew up around the Kansas basketball program.

None of them grew up around the Jayhawks' rivalry with Kansas State.

Keegan Column: Selden embraces ‘new season’ with Big 12 play ↗

It’s a beautiful thing to watch. Talented young athlete makes big step up in competition, struggles to make himself the right fit for his new team. Then wham! He takes off like a kid flying out the door on the last day of school into freedom, a summer of fun in the sun.

Kevin Haskin: Jayhawks again show dominance over Wildcats ↗

LAWRENCE — The all-time record was rather obscure, really.

Other marks were easier to recite reflecting the dominance Kansas enjoys in the basketball series against Kansas State.

Maybe the 47-3 advantage in the previous 50 games. Or, the one win the Wildcats have managed now in the last 20 meetings inside Allen Fieldhouse.

But no, Andrew Wiggins went the distance. Asked about the rivalry, the freshman guard recited the entire record dating to the first in-state matchup in 1907.

“It’s tradition. What are we at, 186-91 now?’’ Wiggins said. “We need to extend the lead to show we’re the most dominant team in Kansas.’’

@jaybate 1.0 Sorry jb, the nodebb platform is a work in progress.. While it has lots of stuff that blows my mind (particular speed and ease of use), they're still actively building everything out. I'd imagine there will always be a few little gotchas of one sort or another, along with the cool stuff. Hopefully when they get to a stable place with the new version and I can upgrade again, this issue will go away. I'm not sure what's causing it. I didn't yet do anything to try to resolve it for you (restart board).

@iowajayhawk2005 agree on Tarik. agree on the whole theme. want to root for the good guys.

@KUSTEVE I've been thinking the same thing for days now. Next year is the championship year. And thinking that way makes this year smell like roses.

@CivilHawk

Ah, I just saw this thread.. I'd responsed to @iowajayhawk2005 on another thread.. Looks like we came to an agreement on the namecalling on this thread. Glad to see.

I'll port over what I wrote here:

@iowajayhawk2005 ehhh.. damn it man, you keep making me have to act like an admin. I appreciate you, I appreciate your insights and your perspective. And others do too. It's solid... but you're the only person with a foul mouth on here.

I get that that might be your thing, but can you censor yourself with asterisks or something? some modicum of self-restraint in deference to your fellow posters?

Are you CivilHawk's alter ego or something?

I really don't want to ban or censor anyone. And I don't really want to qualify what "don't be a jerk means". But... it means "don't be a jerk" by the perspective of the general consensus. That probably universally means not using words that have any direct or derivative meanings related to feces, or genitalia. It also means not insulting other people deliberately and repeatedly.

Ultimately it is subjective, so I can only go by how insulted people appear to be in response to you. Looks like it was a rough day for that.

@jaybate k, I will restart the board this evening, as I hadnt committed any different code, and I assume that will fix it (though possibly it may recur). If it happens again just holler. Thanks.

Positive Ideas to turn this Ship Around • Jan 08, 2014 02:56 AM

Bilas hasn't given up on us after all:

Ranked 9. Kansas Jayhawks (Previous ranking: 7)

The Jayhawks have played the most challenging schedule in the country, and Bill Self knows exactly where his team is -- with no illusions. Kansas coughs the ball up too much and needs to play better defense without fouling, but not counting the San Diego State loss, this is a team that is clearly getting better. Kansas held San Diego State to 37 percent shooting from the field, just six assists to 15 turnovers, and a total of 61 points -- and lost. That is hard to do. But remember, the Jayhawks were horrible last season at TCU and put up a few poor performances before winning the Big 12 and having Michigan beat in the Sweet 16 before giving the game away. Kansas is still pretty good. Like the TCU game last year, Kansas shot an anemic 29 percent from the field, missed nine free throws and generally stunk up the place against San Diego State. But The Bilastrator is not giving up on the Jayhawks.

We'll get the fix once I upgrade the board to the next version.

@dylans I will forward this on to the Nodebb guys.

@jaybate 1.0 Incredible post. Riveting. Loved what you had to say, except for the Coach Consonants part. BLEH. Hasn't he taught the art of flopping forever? Maybe he has only recently made compromises off the court, but the historical combination of abuse of technicalities on the court (rampant flopping, mysterious time added to clocks, uncalled travels, etc), and ESPN's insane obsession with Duke has made my stomach lurch for a long time.

@drgnslayr great topic. I believe success will come if these kids can feel useful, purposeful, appreciated for the things they and their teammates do well. Last year when Self laid into his team after the Ok St loss, I think it directly resulted in our TCU loss, which them snowballed into the Oklahoma loss. I pin those two squarely on Bill. Did "I don't have a point guard" help Naadir in the long run? I don't really think so. But who knows. I also think his impatience and intolerance for falling short of excellence is preventing him from developing viable 3 point shooters on this team. But it's easy for me to say.

If I'm a pessimist, this team could be reminding me a little of UConn's squad in 2005-2006, a few years before Calipari was assembling his perennial lottery balls in KY. I wasn't going to mention the failed Kentucky teams. I guess the novelty of the loaded recruiting classes had worn off and I didn't really expect much success from them until MKG, Davis and Jones got it done. Anyway, that UConn team had a lot of talent, but I was sure they were going to lose even before they got to George Mason; they were 30 and 4 and looked like they didn't want to be there. Surprising, given that a lot of them were upperclassmen. When its not your team, it's definitely easy on the eyes watching a team like that lose.

Imagine if they had Andrew Bynum, who entered the draft instead of going to UConn that season. Maybe they would have lost to GMU by more.

Or maybe we resemble the 2005-2006 Michigan State Spartans, who also lost to GMU. I believe that was the year that Izzo scheduled a brutal pre-conference with a youngish team, and his team got in the tournament with 12 losses as an at large bid. The brutal schedule didn't appear to help them in tournament.

Recently watched Groundhog Day again. Maybe we're trying in all the wrong ways. Maybe we can stop trying to romance more 5-stars, stop finding new ways to commit basketball suicide on the hardwood, and appreciate the simple joys of working hard and improving our ability to play basketball, for the love of life and the love of the game. Does every day feel a lot like the last one right now?

Post-game Roundup: Kansas vs SDSU • Jan 06, 2014 02:40 AM

Seems like the missed threes lead to too many runouts for them and our half court D looked fine (other than our rebounds) . My guess is we practiced the half court D a lot.

Somewhere Newell, Dodd, Tait and Bedore, and others are banging out their postgame thoughts on their respective keyboards.

"outrebounded", "couldn't buy a three", or more complex cogent arguments for why we lost again, I'm sure.

Somewhere HEM is shaking his head at our lack of a three point threat.

Somewhere people wonder if Brannen Greene is transferring.

Somewhere Jaybate is meditating in a greenhouse in lotus position and letting the words roll like a river over him.

@eastcoasthawk
I enjoyed watching Oklahoma take it to Alabama. Esp, Stoops' post-game comments that the SEC has a couple good teams and the rest of the conference sucks, and the conference is overrated. He said "look at Texas A&M and Missouri. They don't seem to be having any problems in the SEC".
