Niko Roberts and Justin Wesley will both be graduating. Seems like they've both been here forever. Maybe Embiid knows another volleyball playing footer Cameroonian that has never played basketball before and would like to walk on for us.

@jaybate 1.0 enjoyed your input about the bench's development affording the starters more freedom to disrupt as well as your thoughts on the rotation selection process.

@bskeet thanks with the help posting the dailies as always. I've been sick and still kind of out of it. Guys, please keep tacking on any stories you see to the daily headlines posts if they aren't already linked to.

“Show me a guy who’s afraid to look bad, and I’ll show you a guy you can beat every time.”

@globaljaybird thanks man.

@kansascomet David Padgett, Micah Downs, and Jr Giddens were all quality players at good ball schools. I'd say most of the others did pretty well.

Not sure if this was mentioned in any of these articles. Michael Cobbins out for season ↗

@parishawk Def seems an over simplification by Self.

It's amazing to me that Embiid is so gifted at both ends of the court. Volleyball.

Maybe to Embiid there is very little distinction between O and D. It's all yin and yang in a volleyball point. Honestly by the time he has run to the other end of the court he has had more time to think than if he were playing volleyball. There might never have been the need for the game to "slow down" for him. That doesn't explain guards that are sneaky though.

The herd has been thinned. • Jan 01, 2014 11:25 PM

@drgnslayr I'm with you. I always loved playing defense and shutting someone else down. Never was a great finisher on offense but loved setting picks rebounding and passing. I think you bring up an interesting point about how Self doesn't recruit D. But maybe he does with a few guys. Releford Withey Mario and maybe Greene? Maybe he sees the psychology there.

I should have included Embiid in that list. Pretty surehe wasn't wagging his finger early in the season simply because Mutombo did.

The herd has been thinned. • Jan 01, 2014 11:09 PM

K @drgnslayr how about a distinction between seeking harmony and order vs seeking discord and disruption. Does it take a person who relishes being disruptive to really excel on the defensive end? Do some people lack that motivation.. And if so why?

The herd has been thinned. • Jan 01, 2014 08:16 PM

Enjoying this discussion. Is Selden too honest to be sneaky? Too straight up? Is innovating on offense. honest, but innovating and anticipating on D dishonest and mean? Is defense somehow dirty because it is the counterforce to offense which is the first force that exists in any basketball dimension just as any conflicting force can be construed as the evil force because before it's appearance, when offense had a monopoly on the court, there was no conflict? Do these thoughts trouble the subconscious of a McDonald's all American who has focused on playingO while the conscience of a less heralded junkyard dog who ranked in the 20s coming out of high school might not be troubled by playing sneaky disruptive D?

@melrank awesome post. against VCU what jumped out at me was the poor shooting by Reed (1 for 9). More importantly the 2 for 21 as a team from 3. I'm sure we have one of the top 5 coaches in the country but I wonder how our 3 pt ‰ when behind under Self compares to the 3 pt % of other coaches when behind. Particularly K, Izzo, Pitino. Self has been able to find the best bigs to ride in game because there is less randomness shooting twos than threes . Or maybe it isn't randomness on the perimeter. Maybe it's zen.

@VailHawk really interesting thought -- hadn't occurred to me, but I'd be game for whatever people want to do. I'd think we'd want to find a way of doing it that doesn't require a big overhead investment while still being able to keep the merch cost reasonable. Also, we'd have to figure out what kind of designs we'd want to run. Anyone have any recommendations on vendors that could give us a good deal on a small run?

:) well the chatroom is always there but as far as I know no one uses it except during games some may. I haven't been chatting recently anywhere because I prefer focusing on the games and Jesse Newell hosts well on cj online. But if you do want to use our chatroom you would replace the nickname text with your preferred nick and leave the #kubuckets in the channel textbox k and then hit start. Sometimes that doesn't appear to load it up. If it hangs here refresh the page and the second time it should work.

2014: Why KU Wins The National Title • Jan 01, 2014 12:24 AM

@HighEliteMajor a great note to end the year on. Thanks for the dead on inspiring prose. It gave me the warm fuzzies.

The herd has been thinned. • Dec 31, 2013 11:06 PM

@jaybate 1.0 Tyshawn's senior season his A/TO ratio was 1.35, down from 1.69 his junior year. Naadir isn't Tyshawn (he's totally different), but if the team is better with him in the game, whatever he brings to the table, I think he'll still get his PT. PG seems to be harder for a OAD to win a position battle with an upperclassman than any other position. It's just as possible Mason rounds out his game / understands his role in the system and pushes him to the pine next year.

@HighEliteMajor those numbers put things in perspective. Coming into the season I thought our on ball D had the potential to be lethal. I've been yearning to a return of leash free RussRob pressure and Mario passing-lane-jumping since 2008. Got excited seeing the full court pressure rolled out but it hasn't developed over the course of the season.

Also, moderate gains. Enjoyed the solid contributions of Tharpe, Ellis, Wiggins, Selden, and Black on offense.

There were defensive lapses, yeah, but Toledo made some pretty high-degree-of-difficulty shots in the lane, and they were extremely confident letting it fly from three. They weren't slouches. Lots of room for improvment on D, but I'll take the overall effort. I'm glad our shots fell.

Post-game Roundup: Kansas vs Toledo • Dec 31, 2013 03:56 AM

!Ellis vs Toledo ↗

Dodd: Naadir Tharpe leads Jayhawks over Toledo 93-83 ↗

LAWRENCE — Back in October, in the weeks before the season began, Kansas coach Bill Self kept telling anyone who would listen that junior guard Naadir Tharpe had to be the Jayhawks’ most valuable player.

No, he wouldn’t be KU’s most talented player. On most nights, that would always be freshman wing Andrew Wiggins. And maybe he wouldn’t be the most dominant (freshman center Joel Embiid) or consistent (sophomore forward Perry Ellis). But Tharpe had to be something else: Steady, mature, a rock for KU’s young players to lean on.

Newell: Self frustrated with team's defense following 93-83 win over Toledo ↗

**KU gives up most to a non-conference foe at home since 2009; Three players score 20 or more **

This doesn’t happen to Kansas. Not at home, and not against nonconference opponents.

Yes, the Jayhawks survived with a 93-83 victory over Toledo on Monday night thanks to efficient offense and overwhelming inside play.

But Bill Self left perturbed knowing his team gave up way more points than he is accustomed to seeing.

KU Sports: Perry Ellis’ big night leads KU soaring past Toledo, 93-83 ↗

Perry Ellis’ name was on the tips of the tongues of 16,300 fans in Allen Fieldhouse on Monday night, who watched in amazement as he scored 21 points (three off a career high) and grabbed a career-best 11 rebounds in the (9-3) Jayhawks’ 93-83 victory over previously undefeated (12-1) Toledo.

Newell: KU freshman Mason 'not satisfied' with outside shot ↗

LAWRENCE — Frank Mason believes his poor 3-point accuracy isn’t a true reflection of the type of shooter he is.

“I’m not satisfied at all,” the KU freshman point guard said Saturday. “I know I’m capable of shooting way better than what I’m doing, but I know it’s going to take a little time.”

Bedore: Frank Mason focused on stepping up as leader ↗

The best present Kansas University freshman point guard Frank Mason received for Christmas was the gift of time spent with loved ones back in Petersburg, Va.

“It was good to go home. I got to see my son, my family, close friends. It was really nice going home,” Mason said after Saturday’s practice and before the Jayhawks’ holiday basketball clinic in Allen Fieldhouse.

KU Athletics: KU basketball closes out against Toledo ↗

Kansas (8-3) closes out the 2013 calendar year when it plays host to Toledo (12-0), Monday, Dec. 30, at 7 p.m. on Jayhawk IMG Television/ESPN3. KU is coming off an 86-64 win against Georgetown on Dec. 21. Toledo is 12-0 on the season after its 85-66 win versus Coppin State on Dec. 28. At 12-0, the Rockets were one of seven teams undefeated in NCAA Division I through Dec. 27.

How this board works • Dec 29, 2013 01:28 PM

A high level overview of how the board works

There are a few different flows for finding posts:

  • Drill down from home screen (this is always available by clicking on "KU Buckets" on the header bar) to a bucket, and find the postings listed in order of (a) those that are pinned first and (b) by what was replied to last
  • Click "Recent" on the header bar, which shows the threads in order of their most recent activity. This shows postings from all buckets, unlike the previous method, which shows only those specific to a bucket
  • Click on "Unread" on the header bar (when logged in). This is a nice feature of the board, which tracks those posts you have not read for you and shows a number here for the number of new posts you have not yet read. This will take you directly to those posts. This will ignore which bucket the posts come from.
  • Click on the bell (notification) icon on the header (when logged in), which shows you the most recent replies to threads you have written, as well as any time someone uses your name in an @ . This is useful because it helps you keep track of discussions you're having across all threads.
  • Click on a user's name or look them up through users and then click on their list of posts, if you're trying to read their stuff.

As for how one posts:

  • the board uses markdown syntax. you can read up by clicking here ↗
  • use @ to address people to drive discussions. Clicking the reply button on someone's post will automatically start your post with @ and their name.
  • links in markdown syntax are done by using brackets around your desired text, and parenthesis around the link immediately after. Here's a link to the markdown explanation. ↗. Also, in the reply window, you can highlight text you want to make into a link, then click the icon with two circles, and then immediately paste the url to where you want the link to go.
  • links to youtube videos will embed the video in the post.
  • to embed an image in your post, do the same as a link except precede it with a !. Here's a link to the markdown explanation. ↗
  • to quote someone, put a > before the paragraph you want quoted. You can also grab someone's post to quote by clicking the quote icon next to the reply button on their post.
  • pound character is used for headers (i.e. larger text sizes). Note if you start a line with pound, it will do this. For more info on headers, here's the markdown lnk. ↗
  • here's a list of emoticons that work with the board.
  • here is a sandbox post if you want a post you can experiment with:

Thanks for the revert approx.-that tiny phone is the schizz to post on. The white reply box would display & could type a message, but was no way to submit or discard the reply. F5/ctrl did not make any diff. Surely HEM & I are not the only ones affected?

I'm not sure. I didn't have any probs on desktop, but I didn't try on my phone. Thought you guys were seeing the problem on desktop in specific. If it was on the phone I could try to upgrade my test site on my own time and see if I can reproduce on the phone.

So now, if you go to a thread and hit reply is everything working right with the modal?

Dec 27 Headlines: Toledo still undefeated • Dec 28, 2013 04:39 AM

@globaljaybird try now? Ctrl+F5 and try please.

Alright guys, I'll revert. not sure. It's bizarre to me. Doing so now

Dec 27 Headlines: Toledo still undefeated • Dec 28, 2013 02:28 AM

Guys, unless its a version or browser I'm not using, it seems like it would be a caching issue. If Ctrl+f5 (clearing cache) doesnt do the trick, can you let me know browser and version number (its either under help or about [Browser name] menu options for most browsers). I'm prefer not to revert as the performance seems to be better so far with the new version and they appear to have made some other fixes people have mentioned (I also like the solid white modal window for replies, feel its a lot nicer on the eyes), but if I can test with the browsers and versions you guys are using and reproduce the problem I could revert if necessary. Thanks for your patience. Should be straight soon.

@jaybate 1.0 Yeah, he'll have his work cut out for him, but I think Beilein has already proven he's a great coach. He's been a winner every step of the way, and there have been many steps: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Beilein ↗

The way he steadily improved West Virginia and Michigan in his time at each school seemed pretty impressive to me. His historical weakness (just from observation) is that he always builds teams heavily reliant on the 3-ball, which they hit with remarkable consistency including his bigs, but this is a formula that we all know is hard to win the tournament with. Which is what made Mitch McGary so important to his team last year, being a true athletic versatile post scorer.

I still think his team will be successful, but my guess (unless they have some other low post guy who I'm not thinking about) is that this all but kills their dreams of a title for the year.

KUSports -- Gary Bedore: KU's next foe, Toledo, still undefeated ↗

Players and coaches on nine college basketball teams gave their fans the best possible present on Christmas Day: an undefeated record to digest with the turkey and ham.

Teams that remain undefeated as the calendar approaches the New Year: Arizona (13-0), Ohio State (12-0), Wichita State (12-0), Wisconsin (12-0), Iowa State (11-0), Oregon (11-0), Syracuse (11-0), Villanova (11-0), and Toledo (11-0).

CJ Online -- Jesse Newell: How luck is helping KU basketball's defense ↗

The Kansas men's basketball defense is ranked 13th in Ken Pomeroy's adjusted defensive efficiency rankings. And a few days ago, for the life of me, I couldn't figure out why.

Sure, KU has played the toughest non-conference schedule of any BCS team so far (and the eighth-toughest in the nation according to KenPom), but the numbers still didn't add up. KU's national rankings in defensive turnover percentage (286th) and free throws allowed per 100 field goals (306th) are both by far the worst in Bill Self's 11 seasons at KU.
