Message of The Day Quotes • Dec 26, 2013 02:20 AM

@jaybate Here ya go man... you probably couldn't find it because we hid it over in the Bugs/Request bucket! Adding your quote here:

"I don't think the discus will ever attract any interest until they let us start throwing them at each other."--Al Oerter

Have I been under a rock, or is this news? • Dec 26, 2013 01:18 AM

@nuleafjhawk @wishawk nice work guys!

@jaybate love it man. I know exactly the type of graphic you are taking about. Someone prob has some java script code we can repurpose out there using something like the d3 graphing engine. Google d3 if you want to see a bunch of brain candy graphs. It's what New York Times uses.

@jaybate fantastic rundown of our coaches. Hey any idea if there is an exhaustive coaching tree on the Web somewhere or should we build one? I really want a visual representing of the coaching bloodlines. If you are writing a book about this can you tell me where I can pre-order it? It seems like possibly the most important under-talked-about aspect of the sport.

@jayhawkfantoo was enjoying your rant until you threatened for coach K to coach Kansas. That made me shudder a little bit.

Dec 24 Headlines: Black on track • Dec 24, 2013 02:16 PM

!

CJ Onlne -- Jesse Newell: KU's Black gets boost from Self ↗

Senior forward says he'd 'run through a wall' for coach who stayed confident in him

LAWRENCE — Kansas coach Bill Self has singled out Tarik Black a few times in practice to talk about his free-throw shooting.

Kansas City Star -- Rustin Dodd: Embiid just tapping into offensive potential ↗

LAWRENCE — Andrew Wiggins is the sort of 18-year-old kid who relishes a defensive challenge. He is 6 feet 8 with a 40-inch vertical and freakishly long arms. So in most cases, there’s not a player that Wiggins couldn’t guard.

This is the player, after all, who begged Kansas coach Bill Self to let him guard Duke star Jabari Parker during the Jayhawks’ victory over the Blue Devils earlier this season. And when Self said no? No problem. Wiggins just switched onto Parker on his own.

KU Sports -- Matt Tait: Black on track: ‘Hard work paid off’ for Kansas’ big-man transfer ↗

Before coming to Lawrence, Kansas University senior Tarik Black, a transfer from Memphis, carved out a niche as Conference USA’s top shooter.

Most of Black’s shots with the Tigers came from point-blank range, as he led his former conference in field-goal percentage in back-to-back seasons — 58.9 percent a season ago and a single-season record 68.9 percent during 2011-12 – but, close range or not, the numbers were impressive.

KU Sports -- Gary Bedore: Bill Self: Zone defenses not without merits ↗

Bill Self, who preaches in-your-face, man-to-man defense, isn’t against implementing the triangle-and-two, box-and-one or even a 3-2 zone if it helps win basketball games.

“Sometimes you do (want to show teams a different look),” said Self, Kansas University’s 11th-year coach, who most of the time prefers a stingy man alignment.

Time to Swing Perry 3/4 • Dec 24, 2013 01:24 PM

@jaybate I'm not sold that his foot speed is there on D to hang with opposing 3s in man. I guess it depends on how much zone we will be running with Perry at 3.

@jaydocmd right on. Was an advocate for Perry at 3 earlier in season but mostly I think it's for his benefit at this point. I would guess perry's motivation to play the 3 would be extremely high though.

Hey guys, late tonight I'm going to get latest on the nodebb version, and i'll likely shut down a server that is redirecting traffic from our old IP to our new. Hopefully this won't cause any downtime for the board. If it does, no cause for alarm.

Also, I wanted to confirm something. Is anyone seeing the css (the style of the site) have problems when you initially load the site? It does for me sometimes (basically it doesnt show any styling, just an ugly mess of text), and if I refresh the page it's fine, but I want to know if other people experience this same thing at all, to rule out this being something particular to me, before I start looking into it.

Thanks everyone.

Dec 23 Headlines: Break Means Gym Time • Dec 23, 2013 01:42 PM

!Joy ↗

KU Sports: Break means gym time for KU ↗

Kansas University’s basketball players, who have headed home for four days worth of holiday cheer, will gather again Thursday for the first of many practices the next four weeks.

“We’ll practice a lot more. We’ll spend more time in the gym. We’ll have shooting practices, certainly do more film work,” KU coach Bill Self said.

KU Sports: Tarik Black named Big 12 newcomer of the week ↗

Saturday's monster game from senior forward Tarik Black produced the Kansas University men's basketball program's third Big 12 newcomer of the week honor in seven weeks.

Black, a transfer from Memphis, scored a career-high 17 points during the Jayhawks' 86-64 victory over Georgetown at Allen Fieldhouse, KU's first home game since Nov. 22.

Wichita Eagle -- Rustin Dodd: KU’s Andrew Wiggins followed Naismith’s path to Lawrence ↗

ALMONTE, Ontario — Here in this rural Canadian field, 100 feet from the old blue schoolhouse, James Naismith and his friends would play their favorite game: Duck on a Rock.

CJOnline -- Jesse Newell: Defensive switch sparks KU's energy against Georgetown ↗

LAWRENCE — With a week to prepare for Georgetown, Kansas spent four practice days going over the Hoyas’ offense before Saturday’s 86-64 victory at Allen Fieldhouse.

CJOnline -- Jesse Newell: Recap: Free throws a reason for celebration and concern for KU ↗

Even without Perry Ellis (who left and didn't return after getting elbowed to the neck in the second half), the Kansas frontcourt showed how dominant it could be against a Georgetown team that had defended the interior well until Saturday...

ESPN: Box score ↗

CJ Online -- Jesse Newell: Black breaks out in KU's 86-64 win over Georgetown ↗

LAWRENCE — Tarik Black scored a season-high 17 points on 5-for-5 shooting, leading the Kansas men's basketball team to an 86-64 victory over Georgetown on Saturday afternoon at Allen Fieldhouse.

Kansas City Star -- Rustin Dodd: Black, No. 18 KU roll over Georgetown 86-64 ↗

LAWRENCE — Back at home for the first time in a month, Kansas just needed to get out and run a little.

The Jayhawks also needed a spark from senior forward Tarik Black.

KU Sports -- Matt Tait: Perry Ellis OK after victory over Georgetown ↗

It was a slug fest and one that Georgetown controlled in the early going. But by game's end, it was the Kansas University men's basketball team that stood in the center of the ring with its arm raised following a 86-64 victory in the first ever meeting between these two programs in Allen Fieldhouse.

KU Sports -- Keegan: Embiid's growth astounds Jayhawks ↗

Bill Self has coached in games that featured terrific basketball players competing for and against him. Andrew Wiggins, not yet 19, already has played with and against remarkable talents. Still, Kansas University freshman center Joel Embiid does things on the basketball court that fill the two men with wonder.

Dec 21: Game Day Stories • Dec 21, 2013 04:06 PM

CJ Online -- Jesse Newell: KU guard Wiggins still learning defensively ↗

LAWRENCE — Former Kansas player Travis Releford hasn’t had a lot of time to study Andrew Wiggins’ game while pursuing his basketball career overseas.

CJ Online -- Jesse Newell: Five-Minute Scout: Josh Smith good, but he does have a weakness ↗

Georgetown's defense has held down opponents' shooting percentages all year, as the Hoyas have posted the seventh-best effective field-goal percentage defense in the nation.

KU Sports: After 29 days away, KU men return home to face Georgetown ↗

After a trip to the Bahamas for three games, plus stops in Colorado, Florida and Kansas City, Mo., Kansas University’s basketball team finally returns to Allen Fieldhouse today.

KU Sports: Embiid's growth astounds Jayhawks ↗

Bill Self has coached in games that featured terrific basketball players competing for and against him. Andrew Wiggins, not yet 19, already has played with and against remarkable talents. Still, Kansas University freshman center Joel Embiid does things on the basketball court that fill the two men with wonder.

KC Star: Georgetown-Kansas basketball preview ↗

ABOUT GEORGETOWN (7-2): The Hoyas lost All-American forward Otto Porter to the NBA, but head coach John Thompson III has regrouped with a group that features UCLA transfer center Josh Smith and leading scorer D’Vauntes Smith-Rivera. Smith, a 350-pound load, considered transferring to Kansas last season but settled on Georgetown, where he became eligible right away under an NCAA hardship waiver. He should present quite a test for KU freshman center Joel Embiid. “We think we have some big guys, and we’re not even in the same ballpark when you start talking about Josh,” KU coach Bill Self said.” His hands are soft, and he’s a terrific player.” … KU and Georgetown, who are starting a four-year series, have played only twice. Georgetown beat KU in the Sweet 16 in 1987, while the Jayhawks won at the Maui Invitational in 2011.

Barry Hinson: 'I regret one thing' • Dec 21, 2013 02:48 AM

I'd like to do it all again... I enjoyed it more than playing. I bet I jump back in when my boy is old enough to play.

@drgnslayr I have no doubt that you will, and you'll be great at it still. I coached older boys for a long time and had to give it up because of family too. It's a big adjustment but it's fun starting over.

Pay Heed Season 2 Episode No. 2 • Dec 20, 2013 08:43 PM

Nice. I switched up the syntax so the video is embedded. If you edit it you can see the syntax..

<a href="http://img.youtube.com/vi/dgl668JS83k/0.jpg" target="_blank" rel="noopener">![This is the alternate text and doesn't really matter ↗</a>](<div class="video-embed"><iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/dgl668JS83k" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe></div>

Basically, you could cut and paste this for another video, then just take the alphanumeric string at the end of the new video and paste it in where this string (dgl668JS83k) is between vi/ and /0.jpg (thats the image) and then again at the end of v= (thats the video link, notice its the same string)

Barry Hinson: 'I regret one thing' • Dec 20, 2013 07:56 PM

@drgnslayr Well said man. Those are some great arguments.

Score does serve as a universally accepted measure of one team's performance against another team's performance. "I made 5 baskets!" is much different than "I made 5 baskets, but my team still lost!" There are good lessons to learn from a scoreboard, and its easier to talk about a goal (a W vs an L) that is concrete and universally understood.

On the flipside, the presence of a score will cause coaches to play their best players the whole game, or have mixed feelings about playing their weaker players. That's a tougher pill to swallow for young kids who feel like the coach/team/fans don't want them to play.

Nice Article on Xavier Henry • Dec 20, 2013 07:09 PM

Xavier is now the starting point guard with Kobe going down, at least until one of their three injured point guards (most likely Farmar) comes back.

http://www.lakersnation.com/lakers-news-without-kobe-bryant-xavier-henry-will-play-point-guard/2013/12/19/ ↗

Barry Hinson: 'I regret one thing' • Dec 20, 2013 05:35 PM

@drgnslayr I take that as the focus is less on whether you win or lose, and more on how you play the game.

For younger kids, this means more effort and engagement.

For older kids, more decision-making and execution.

If Coach Self didn't have a scoreboard for a game, he'd be even more intense. The lack of a scoreboard doesn't have to be a bad thing, and it doesn't have to even be a "softer" thing. If you want to take a tough approach, I'd say its an opportunity to coach "no plays off!" It's subjective.

Games This Week • Dec 18, 2013 04:33 AM

Reading up on Pastner while watching this Memphis v. Florida game.

Saw that he gave $250,000 to Memphis athletic department. ↗

Also, from wikipedia article:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Josh_Pastner ↗

At the age of 16, the Houston Hoops AAU squad was turned over to Pastner by his father, his first job as a head coach.[7] While an AAU coach, Pastner coached future NBA players such as Emeka Okafor, T. J. Ford and Daniel Gibson.

Also, the article said this of his education:

Josh Pastner was a walk-on freshman on the 1997 NCAA championship University of Arizona basketball team. After winning the NCAA title, Pastner was able to finish his degree in only two and a half years, taking as many as 33 units per semester.[3] He earned his bachelor's degree in Family Studies from Arizona in December 1998. He finished his master's in Teaching and Teacher Education in December 1999 before beginning work on his doctorate and starting his coaching career in 2000 as a graduate-assistant under Lute Olson at Arizona.

It's interesting to see his path to coaching, knowing he wanted to do it at an early age. I wonder if his skill level on the court merited walking on that championship team, or how heavily other factors weighed in. Also, if he chose his degree in Family Studies because he believed it would help him recruit and allowed for him to more readily fast-track his degree.

Not judging. Just curious.

Great thread @drgnslayr .. think you summed up the case beautifully and opened up a good discussion.

If we were afraid of losing, we wouldn't have the hardest schedule in the country for one of the youngest teams in the country. Besides, now we have Perry, Conner and Wiggins, so it's not like we're competing for their services any more.
