Senior forward says he'd 'run through a wall' for coach who stayed confident in him
LAWRENCE — Kansas coach Bill Self has singled out Tarik Black a few times in practice to talk about his free-throw shooting.
LAWRENCE — Andrew Wiggins is the sort of 18-year-old kid who relishes a defensive challenge. He is 6 feet 8 with a 40-inch vertical and freakishly long arms. So in most cases, there’s not a player that Wiggins couldn’t guard.
This is the player, after all, who begged Kansas coach Bill Self to let him guard Duke star Jabari Parker during the Jayhawks’ victory over the Blue Devils earlier this season. And when Self said no? No problem. Wiggins just switched onto Parker on his own.
Before coming to Lawrence, Kansas University senior Tarik Black, a transfer from Memphis, carved out a niche as Conference USA’s top shooter.
Most of Black’s shots with the Tigers came from point-blank range, as he led his former conference in field-goal percentage in back-to-back seasons — 58.9 percent a season ago and a single-season record 68.9 percent during 2011-12 – but, close range or not, the numbers were impressive.
Bill Self, who preaches in-your-face, man-to-man defense, isn’t against implementing the triangle-and-two, box-and-one or even a 3-2 zone if it helps win basketball games.
“Sometimes you do (want to show teams a different look),” said Self, Kansas University’s 11th-year coach, who most of the time prefers a stingy man alignment.

@jaydocmd right on. Was an advocate for Perry at 3 earlier in season but mostly I think it's for his benefit at this point. I would guess perry's motivation to play the 3 would be extremely high though.

@drgnslayr I have no doubt that you will, and you'll be great at it still. I coached older boys for a long time and had to give it up because of family too. It's a big adjustment but it's fun starting over.

Basically, you could cut and paste this for another video, then just take the alphanumeric string at the end of the new video and paste it in where this string (dgl668JS83k) is between vi/ and /0.jpg (thats the image) and then again at the end of v= (thats the video link, notice its the same string)
@drgnslayr Well said man. Those are some great arguments.
Score does serve as a universally accepted measure of one team's performance against another team's performance. "I made 5 baskets!" is much different than "I made 5 baskets, but my team still lost!" There are good lessons to learn from a scoreboard, and its easier to talk about a goal (a W vs an L) that is concrete and universally understood.
On the flipside, the presence of a score will cause coaches to play their best players the whole game, or have mixed feelings about playing their weaker players. That's a tougher pill to swallow for young kids who feel like the coach/team/fans don't want them to play.
Xavier is now the starting point guard with Kobe going down, at least until one of their three injured point guards (most likely Farmar) comes back.

@drgnslayr I take that as the focus is less on whether you win or lose, and more on how you play the game.
For younger kids, this means more effort and engagement.
For older kids, more decision-making and execution.
If Coach Self didn't have a scoreboard for a game, he'd be even more intense. The lack of a scoreboard doesn't have to be a bad thing, and it doesn't have to even be a "softer" thing. If you want to take a tough approach, I'd say its an opportunity to coach "no plays off!" It's subjective.
Enjoyed going back to the 2011-2012 team and watching their shopping spree as well..

It's interesting to see his path to coaching, knowing he wanted to do it at an early age. I wonder if his skill level on the court merited walking on that championship team, or how heavily other factors weighed in. Also, if he chose his degree in Family Studies because he believed it would help him recruit and allowed for him to more readily fast-track his degree.

If we were afraid of losing, we wouldn't have the hardest schedule in the country for one of the youngest teams in the country. Besides, now we have Perry, Conner and Wiggins, so it's not like we're competing for their services any more.
