UPDATE: Site layout changes • Nov 17, 2013 07:19 AM

@lulufulu85 sorry lulu... Democracy in action :) We'll work it in, don't worry. But background may be too busy...

@JayhawkRock78 Thanks for the encouragement, but nothing like that is necessary. As @bskeet said, this is a labor of love.

@wrwlumpy you never criticized yourself for criticizing yourself :)

Alexander to Kansas! • Nov 16, 2013 09:11 PM

@Statmachine Nice find Statmachine.

So it looks like Quentin Snider must have recommitted to Louisville knowing that Lyle was going to decommit and join Alexander at KU.

@konkeyDong Here's an ESPN article ↗ about Cliff dodging the question about potentially going elsewhere. I'd prefer to give the kid the benefit of the doubt and assume he doesn't like to be pushed into making an absolute statement, because it's always true that anything could happen between now and next Fall.

What I do wonder though, is to how Self's staff manages expectations of the recruits once they are signed. How much work does it involve, and how is that work divided up by the staff? Anyone have any insight into this?

UPDATE: Site layout changes • Nov 16, 2013 06:49 PM

Switched the background for postings from blue to gray. I wanted to get an iteration of this in before reexamining the black on white tonight to see if people like this better than the dark blue. I had noticed than when scrolling down fast on the phone, the blue background would cause the white text to appear pink. The grey alleviates this. I think the contrast is better.

UPDATE: Site layout changes • Nov 16, 2013 06:08 PM

Thanks @bskeet for gutting it out with me last night and figure out a thematic starting point for us to iterate from. The exciting thing is, we know we can do it, and now its just a matter of getting it where we want it.

I think you're right in mentioning the background image as well. We should look at what it looks like either masking that further or eliminating it, although it makes me happy seeing banners in the background too.

Alexander to Kansas! • Nov 16, 2013 06:03 PM

@drgnslayr K, links are now hot again.

Alexander to Kansas! • Nov 16, 2013 05:54 PM

@drgnslayr good point on Links need to be hot.

About the right to edit posts: you've got that right because you're over the reputation threshold for that right. Be good! I think like the spelling of favourite, the inclusion of this right may be a Canadian thing.. Some sort of innocent until proven guilty sensibility. :-) Cheers!

Future site features • Nov 16, 2013 05:26 PM

Once the legibility issues are resolved, and any other layout problems, here are a few of the items I think should be addressed:

  • Pulling pinned threads from the db on the front page, so there is no manual effort in keeping that list updated. Or... consider alternate layouts, if we think the new category layout (and future iterations of category layouts by nodebb) make the need for the recent postings list on the main page obsolete
  • Continued consideration of turning html back on for posts, so that people can embed whatever they want (ex. sound and video) This is simply a security concern and requires just unchecking a checkbox to turn on.. the implications need to be thought out a little bit.
  • Some work on backups, server restarts, and our site monitoring package.
UPDATE: Site layout changes • Nov 16, 2013 05:18 PM

@Careful_you thanks a lot for the words of encouragement. People have valid concerns about the legibility and I'll get that (hopefully) all straightened out tonight, very likely with dark text on white background for all posts.

As for the unread section, and all category views, yep! I think you got it right. Clicking on the right side takes you to the bottom.

UPDATE: Site layout changes • Nov 16, 2013 04:32 PM

@HighEliteMajor Thanks HEM. I appreciate you posting insightful Jayhawks critique. The site's just a canvas for that.

UPDATE: Site layout changes • Nov 16, 2013 04:24 PM

Guys, I did some work on inverting the blue and white for the posts, but have some unfinished pieces that I still need to do, so I'm going to table this until this evening. Have some other stuff I need to do. In the meantime, I'll wait to hear some more about what other people think, good or bad. Please let me know, I really do appreciate the feedback regardless, even if you just want to blast it, though I'd prefer details, but if your options are blasting it or biting your tongue and you think its a monstrosity that cannot be saved..well just go ahead and blast it, I need to hear that too. Thanks guys!

UPDATE: Site layout changes • Nov 16, 2013 04:09 PM

@JayhawkRock78 Changed the text from gray to white. Let me know if that helps.

UPDATE: Site layout changes • Nov 16, 2013 03:59 PM

@DanR

I'd give it a full critique from my graphic designer point of view

Please do, that could be helpful.

the way it was, which was great (crisp, clean and readable).

I agree it was clean, but it was also very vanilla. How can we make it personal to Jayhawk basketball while retaining the clean feeling? That's what I think we should strive for.

Top complaint: Reversed text (white on navy)... that's gotta go.

We can definitely fix that. I agree, that's the most important thing - legibility of the posts.

It's your baby, so take it for what it's worth.

I don't take anything personally on the design. The point is make something people enjoy. If you don't mind, please give me more granular details on the problems and I'd like to steer away from requests to revert completely. This is always an option, but not the first option. I also want to hear what people like better (for instance, I feel like graphics look good against the dark background), so that we can get consensus opinion. Let's talk more about the specifics of what works and what doesn't, please.

UPDATE: Site layout changes • Nov 16, 2013 02:10 PM

@Blown I like that idea, let me play with a little bit and we can test that out as well ok? Thanks for the feedback!

UPDATE: Site layout changes • Nov 16, 2013 01:07 PM

@parishawk Here's my opinion on the new layout:

The background image, which @lulufulu85 graciously gave us, has been muted so as to be easy on the eye.

The colors have been selected deliberately to be unobtrusive, the font colors were matched with the background colors (although there is still some tweaking to be done with font color), and the background colors were left solid so that reading would be easy on the eye. Being that obtrusivity is qualitative, I'm not sure where specifically there is an issue, though I'm not diminishing the importance of your gut reaction, it most certainly is important with design, I also believe that its important to let a new design sink in a
little while and see if your opinion remains the same.

This was our first attempt at a reskinning. I believe that this site needs a design that celebrates its identity as a community, and several other posters have made requests in that vein, so that is what we are going for. This is by no means a complete product, and we intend to tweak it, and see what the continued reaction to it is (again, thanks for reacting). Going back to the old theme wholesale is certainly an option, but that would be the nuclear option, if we simply cannot tweak it until it is someplace that gives the greatest satisfaction to the greatest number.

Also, to be sure that your browser hasn't cached part of the old theme, can you please hit Ctrl-F5, which clears out your browser's cache.

Huge thank you to bskeet! • Nov 16, 2013 08:00 AM

...For knocking out the new styling with me! There is no way it would have gotten done without your help.

Hope you guys like it.

Where is Selfs Ceiling? • Nov 16, 2013 06:17 AM

@bskeet Self just needs to hold out until his clones are stable without life support outside their birthing vats.

Haha, yeah.. so.. I think i like it being full scale fieldhouse. but then I need to figure out all the places I need to make the foreground semi opaque, so you can still read stuff.

Sandbox. • Nov 16, 2013 06:08 AM

Yeah man, well.. you can. I turned it on, and its sweet, but I turned it back off, because I dont know the security implications. Maybe I need to talk it over with the nodebb guys.

UPDATE: Site layout changes • Nov 16, 2013 03:20 AM

Well guys, I updated the site to the latest the nodebb guys have on github. It looks like this fixed some stuff and introduced some interesting features to the site (looking at the recent stories, for instance). I think I had an incompatible database schema and it was causing trouble with the site I plead "no malice!"). Julian put me on the right path and I got it upgraded to latest. Thanks Julian.

UPDATE: Site layout changes • Nov 16, 2013 02:32 AM

Update on yesterday's work:

We rolled out new version of nodebb, which fixed stability issues, and cleaned up a few style things, as well as introduced a new layout for the category screen.

EDIT: Since i think the other post got buried, thanks again bskeet for all your help.

We then switched to a darker theme, applied @lulufulu85 's pic of the fieldhouse asa muted background, and then iterated over control styles until we came to a starting place for a dark theme we liked.

We'll see what people think on this, and be be making tweaks until we get to something we're happy with.

UPDATE : Link to other changes planned

@globaljaybird Thanks for sharing this. This kind of thing more than negates the bad karma of cursing behind a hand mid-game. This year there might be less red-faced cursing and Self can finally get ahead!

New granddaughter, so.... • Nov 15, 2013 05:41 AM

@brooksmd Congrats man! We'll find her an internet feed of the game if they have wifi in the hospital.

@parishawk I had an issue today where a long thread wouldn't show me the newest stuff on my android phone, even though I knew it had something new because it showed up in unread. To get around this I refreshed the thread and it loaded up everything ok. I guess there are some kinks. I'll also look at whether the server or its services need to be restarted, since it's been running non stop for quite a while now. Thanks for the heads up.

Can't Load Template error • Nov 14, 2013 02:38 AM

@Careful_you this error indicates that the client (browser side) isn't communicating with the database. I've seen it periodically when I (as an end user) am on wifi or on my phone. It could be more substantial, but other than outages, I haven't seen this problem more than as an occasional annoyance when the client can't find the data, and fixes itself in a few seconds. Thanks for letting me know, and if it becomes a major problem, please tell.

Thanks c_y.
