Pro Jayhawks update β€’ Nov 11, 2013 05:52 PM

@wissoxfan83 He played below the rim in high school (at least from his highlight videos back then) just like other KU recruits at the time that started dunking once they got to KU.

Our recruits now dunk on tape thoroughly in high school :)

Opinion: For Weis, cover-up worse than punt fake β€’ Nov 08, 2013 01:27 PM

I'm in the DC Area and have watched the Nats, Orioles, Wizards and Redskins underachieve for a decade (and recently do a little better). I've attributed some of this to the enormous expectations put on teams to succeed in the nation's capital, sometimes unfairly, and often causing the self-perpetuating acquisition of over-the-hill talent at the price of truly rebuilding the roster. I'm not sure if any of this applies to Kansas football over the last few years, but sometimes it feels like it does. People look at the success of the basketball team and see the massive disparity, and that fact hangs on the football team at all times, whether spoken or not. So the football program and the people around it are fighting an apparition rather than whole-heartedly focusing on the incremental needs to get where we want to go.

KU Sports - Nov 7: Keegan on Wiggins and Traylor β€’ Nov 08, 2013 04:27 AM

Maybe we had to pay off some 3-ball karma for going to OT against Memphis on a trey.

KU Sports - Nov 7: Keegan on Wiggins and Traylor β€’ Nov 08, 2013 02:20 AM

@hawk8086 exactly. The turnovers by ej and defensive breakdowns by withey in the paint were maddening. We let down our guard and trey Burke and mitch Mcgary punched us in the face repeatedly.

KU Sports -- Stories on KU vs Fort Hays State. β€’ Nov 06, 2013 04:00 AM

@Wishawk alright, alright let's see... Jesse said Greene going in the game at the 13:43 mark was the turning point in the game, with him hitting a 3 immediately, then getting a steal for a transition bucket..

I concur, Greene made an immediate impact, but I also think Embiid outplayed Black, and Naadir was much more under control than Mason was to start (nerves), so those two also settled us down.

Other item of note, Jamari scored 11 points, to go along with Perry and Selden scoring 13 apiece, and Wiggins scoring ten.

We outscored them in the paint 44-22, which Jesse attributes as the difference in the game. We would have outscored them on the perimeter as well, had we played any defense. We shot the ball well.

Agree completely @jayhawkfantoo have been thinking about this and plan to do it. Matter of when but hopefully soon!

@Wishawk If Mitch McGary was a fluke in that game, I'd still think we'd see him on that list, as beating KU in the tournament is how legends are born (I think his inclusion in that list is predicated on his 20/10 line against us, or whatever it was). But he's definitely a beast, and made Withey look slow and confused.

KUBuckets Chatroom Open β€’ Nov 05, 2013 05:20 AM

Alright guys, I've set up a kiwi irc chatroom for our KU Buckets Chat for tomorrow's game. We are still looking at doing our own thing, but for now, we're rolling with Kiwi...

So this is how it works:

  • If you don't see the link on the menu bar, type Ctrl-F5 (or you can click this link). It should now show "KU Buckets Chat"
  • When you click on it, it will ask you if you have a password. You don't -- just modify the random name (ex. kubuckets|3947) to your chosen nickname and then click Start (leave the room as #kubuckets)
  • Alright, you're in! Here's a list of IRC commands β†—. Note that this is a light version of IRC actually written in node, so all these commands may not work.
  • Two commands I did try that did work which are of interest are /nick (followed by a change of nick) and /query (someone elses name) -- this starts a side conversation with them in a private tab.
  • Also, I checked it on mobile and it looked great.

This solution is better than last week's solution and has some nice features, but still has a couple loose ends that in the future we'll try to tie up:
* The text isn't persistent if you leave the room and come back, so I'd recommend just leaving it open and opening another tab if you need to do something else.
* It still doesn't authenticate with your KuBuckets account. Honor system on who you are.. Regular golden rule applies (don't be a jerk).
* Noticed some latency after clicking start occassionally. If it lags here, you can always hit Ctrl-F5 (this is a hard refresh of the browser) and try joining again. Second time should be the charm.

Have fun! Look forward to seeing some of you guys on tomorrow.

I'll leave the chatroom open already for you guys to play with.

If for whatever reason this chatroom turns out to have problems (it shouldn't -- just covering our bases), I can roll back to the barebones solution we went with last week. In the event of that emergency, I'll post a post with the new link.

@gary_bedore Hey Gary, can you guys find another pic for Wiggins? You know, something that says more "once in a decade electrifying basketball talent" and less "I just woke up and have to do this dumb photo shoot"?

@wishawk good points, I certainly agree all athletes would like to play meaningful minutes. I guess I wonder if being a practice player or bit role player for one of the best coaches in the country on a team that competes for a NC is >= to playing more meaningful minutes on a team that isn't nearly as good, for a coach who isn't nearly as good.

Hunter Mickelson -- Razorbacks havent seen the tourney since 2007-2008.
Landen Lucas -- University of Washington went to NIT last two years.

I think there is something special being part of the teams Self can field year in and year out, and just learning how to be a much better basketball player, and I like to think that both those dreams are very important to our players and are being fulfilled, regardless of abundance of PT.

KU Sports - Nov 3 : Ted Owen's Autobiography β€’ Nov 05, 2013 03:39 AM

@Careful_you I think i follow what you're saying, that this board is more user owned and operated, and so we don't need KU Sports writers driving all of our discussions. If that's what you're getting at, I agree.

But I would say that finding and linking to good stories on KU bball wherever they may be seems to be one of the main things that makes our forum good. It's a lot easier to doodle on the paper when it isn't blank. That content often serves as an easy starting point for conversation, be it a KU Sports article, Wichita Eagle article, or whatever...

KU Sports will likely continue to be one of the main sources we read, but we seem to be branching out, and I'm excited by that, because we're discovering different view points that maybe we wouldn't have found or shared with each other when conversing linearly on just KU Sports articles.

Thanks guys! Back to a static place to get to the stories, I think this ought to help people keep their bearings a little better.

Several unrelated topics β€’ Nov 05, 2013 02:50 AM

They must serve awesome falafel at the D-Hall.

@lulufulu85 If we're going to beat them, we need to abuse them on the interior, because their guards are more experienced than ours, but their bigs aren't and ours are more talented. I think Ellis, Black and Embiid need to step up in a big way, and Naadir needs to demand the ball to bring it up court and keep our turnovers in the realm of reasonable. If we can run a controlled offense, while getting out on the break, and feed our bigs, we should win.

@wishawk I don't see it as these guys being run off. I think Self told them something like "with hard work, if you get substantially better in these areas, I can see the potential of playing time for you"... While this might seem harsh, the fact of the matter is that these guys, who are not NBA talent without significant improvement, get to play basketball at a blue blood program on scholarship, and practice against some of the best talent in the country. Even if these guys leave, redshirt a year and play somewhere else, they're better off for having gotten to practice under Self. I just don't see the downside.

KU Sports - Nov 3 : Ted Owen's Autobiography β€’ Nov 04, 2013 02:42 AM

@Gary_Bedore Welcome Gary!

@globaljaybird As Gary has stated numerous times, KU Sports was okay with letting the portion of its commentors who did not want to authenticate with Facebook go somewhere else to do their commenting, so with that position in mind, I think KU Sports and we have a healthy symbiosis. They provide content, to which we faithfully direct our userbase, and we provide a home base where our community gets to discuss under our chosen names. I see no malice here, and I think we should welcome Gary with open arms. @Civilhawk ... your queue....

@wishawk Really like these ideas. The stuff that is more administrative (and doesn't require modify the nodebb code) we can implement right away.... The section for Q&A and changing blog to a section representing feature content should both be done immediately. I'll change Blog to Featured Stories, and I will rely on everyone with thread rights to move stories that are appropriate in (and out of) here.

Some people, yourself included, should now have thread rights at this point, because you have enough reputation. I had to set the threshold lower to get you guys included, but I am sliding the minimum value up as you guys get more reputation. It is unnatural to have thread rights at so low a threshold. I'm not entirely a fan of how rights are managed in nodebb because of this. The bright side is, I can undo anything that someone with thread rights might do, in the event of sabotage. Assuming the system of reputation is as it stands, please continue to give favourite points to people who demonstrate act of kindness, make useful points, or are otherwise awesome, so that we can have a more natural demarcation line for thread rights, or other future rights that are tied to reputation.

About the pinning of stories to top -- NodeBB already has this ability in thread rights, so people with thread rights can do this!

Will make the BLOG / Q&A changes now.

Status updates on site β€’ Nov 03, 2013 03:04 PM

@jryman Thanks. I was thinking it would be neat if we could have a job crawling various sites for KU content and posting new stories on a particular page, so that we could then pick them up and frame them in our own posts. We'll have to see how feasible / flaky that is... but that would mean we could get the latest stories without waiting for someone to go out and find them manually, and we could map them as people pick them up and gussy them up with our framing posts.

Status updates on site β€’ Nov 03, 2013 02:37 PM

Hi guys

The site was down this morning -- realized that our provider rebooted the server overnight but there wasn't a cron job in place to restart the website on a reboot. This is done now.

This is probably a good time to list out the upcoming items for site improvement.

Items that need focus in order of apparent import are:
1) Chatroom for in game chat -- A friend and I are working on this at the moment. We hope to have an improved version of the chatroom ready for Tuesday's game.
2) Site performance monitoring -- Have a package for this that I need to install to be more aware of downtime or performance concerns on the site in real time.
3) Site styling -- We need to start thinking exactly how we want to style the site if we want to depart from the node bb themes, and build our own style package. Let's discuss in this thread (link).
4) Consider any departures from standard nodebb that are beyond stylistic -- Do we want content on the desktop home page, snippets of stories, and user generated content promoted as stories on the front page? This seems to be logical.

What do you guys think?

Restyling the site - discussion β€’ Nov 03, 2013 03:47 AM

This is a thread for stylistic suggestions if anyone wants to talk about it...

Was playing with fonts on HEM's post about Self earlier, because I felt that maybe the font could be darker, sharper, and spaced better for maximum journalistic feel...

Here's what I thought looked better... To test this in Chrome, right click on a paragraph (you could right click right here on this text if you want to), then click inspect element, then on the Styles tab to the right, you'll see element.style { } at the top of the list. Click inside the curly braces and paste this:

font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, sans-serif;
font-size: 14px;
color: black;
line-height: 150%;

So you have this:

element.style {
font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, sans-serif;
font-size: 14px;
color: black;
line-height: 150%;
}

Your paragraph will now have the new styles applied and you can see what it looks like.

@wissoxfan83 that would be right, except when someone has two names you have to use an underscore inbetween the names (so replace the space in Mr Miyagi with _ --> @Mr_Miyagi

New photos of KU BBall coming. β€’ Nov 02, 2013 08:44 PM

@lulufulu85 awesome! Really looking forward to it. You don't need to send them... Cut out the middleman! Should be able to drag and drop them right into your post.

wissox -- thanks for posting this. I edited your post.. think its better to not take other articles verbatim, better to paraphrase or give a teaser and link...

@redblueku Welcome aboard! Future change here regarding the site will be good change.... We are working on the redesign of the live game chat, we're going to be restyling the site, and I'm sure the Nodebb guys will cook up some good stuff as well. Don't worry. By restyling I mean fonts colors and images, not ads, questionnaires and federated authentication.

@globaljaybird nice pics! I was wondering, did Releford often watch people's faces when he guarded them β†—? I seem to recall he did, and here's another one I found where he does β†—. Interesting for a lock down defender.. I was always told you watch people's hips and arms. But they also told me to square my feet to the basket, and that's antiquated....

@baris Actually I think there may be something going on with mobile.. When I looked at a story that showed up in my unread this morning that I know I had read up to the second last post on, it put me in the middle of the thread. I looked at another thread (this one) later on desktop and it put me at the end like it should. @JayDocMD Are you using mobile at all?

absent posts β€’ Oct 31, 2013 04:37 AM

@JayDocMD Alright, so I think I understand what's going on.. JD, please correct me if I'm wrong.. I think you and I both had it in the back of our heads that clicking on the thread, regardless of location, would take us to the unread posts. However, this only happens when you click on the blurb of the most recent post, on the right side of the unread line item. Now that I'm focusing my attention on it, I don't think I'm seeing any issue with it.

Yo Stats. You make a good case for the need for extended depth this season and for being patient with the freshman. I think we will see an aggressive Selden in the next game.
