Nice lob Och.
Not gonna call either of those fouls?
Och unlucky there.
Harris has been the only aggressive offensive player I’ve seen so far with Wilson second. I missed early Dave.
Och was so good earlier in the year taking what the defense gives him but hasn’t developed a counter to what the big 12 is throwing at him these last couple of games.
@BShark said in Boomer 2 Game Thread:
Thankfully OU cooled off a bit. Now if KU could just make some more threes...
Gotta get Och and Braun some looks from deep. Harris and Wilson just aren’t going to fill it up from 3 consistently.
@bskeet said in Boomer 2 Game Thread:
If Dave has an injured food then Remy must have an amputated leg based on the way they are played.
Self has been abundantly clear the Remy is not playing because Remy doesn’t feel good enough to play. I wonder how he handles watching Dave hobble around while he sits on the bench with a “sore knee”
@Kcmatt7 said in Boomer 2 Game Thread:
No points, rebounds or assists by a bench player in 19 minutes. Makes it hard to win
Can’t say they didn’t get a run so far. Not selfs leash or short bench keeping them off the scoreboard.
@tundrahok said in Boomer 2 Game Thread:
@benshawks08 He started off strong this game, did he re-injure something?
That weird tumble he took was telling for me. Dude doesn’t trust his feet.
@tundrahok I think he’s got some foot thing going on that just gets worse the longer he’s on it. Self maybe trying to limit minutes so he has him a little fuller strength for half 2. Just my observation.
Wow Braun and Och trying to flub another end of half.
Need a run to finish the half on a positive note. I believe it’s coming.

That shot by Jalen doesn't have a chance leaning away from the hoop
It was closer than I expected, TBH.
His shot preparation is the worst on the team
Always a last minute decision to shoot.
Frustrating lack of rebounding incoming for y’all.
I must be ahead.
Two offensive fouls and the get the foul on Mitch…
Harris and Mitch two man game. Bucketeer delight.
Bad fouls Mitch.
The new defensive strategy against Kansas is just foul Och all game and the refs will just ignore it.
Lol. Instant offense.
Oh. I’m joining late. First I’ve seen him on the bench.
Harris is out. Let’s see if this team is suddenly much better.

The defense is struggling again I see
OU is shooting 69%. Fortunate to be within reach.
Hard to miss open layups. That’s something only Kansas teams are good at.
Can’t believe they called that…
Och needs to start initiating contact a little more. Teams are just blanketing him. He needs to run through guys and draw fouls with and without the ball.
Details details details. Gotta be able to set screens.

We just don't have it today
And we are only down three. We will be fine.
Wait was it?
Lucky that wasn’t an and one.
Watching the first part of this Texas game and boy are there bodies all over the floor yet again.
Not a big fan of their style of play.
@nuleafjhawk said in Tejas Game Thread:
@benshawks08 Is that why K-State has such great fans? Because they're used to losing?
Certainly contributes to their excitement when they win!
@Jethro The 11-7 was a call back to some of the posters above who were confident this was the worst KU team Self has ever produced.

What I like about this team is having core upperclassmen, promising freshmen talent, and no one-and-done guys!
And I don't think this team has played its best basketball yet. The Baylor game is really the only game where they've played to their ability on both ends of the floor for both halves.
@Woodrow A lot of spoiled fans around the jayhawk program. ALWAYS winning can do that to folks. We are so lucky to have a team with a shot at the title EVERY year.
@Kcmatt7 said in Have the Olympics lost their luster?:
@BeddieKU23 This.
This Winter Olympics being held where it is has made it an issue. It is being politicized like crazy and people are trying to avoid seeing any of that stupid ish.
Then you have Covid, so people aren't there in person.
There will be a great revival of the olympics, my guess is in LA in 2028. Just my guess, but by then things should be "normal" plus you'll see some American heroes made on home turf. Watching these events with basically no crowd takes the air out of it. Felt the same thing when pro and college sports were being played in empty arenas.
I’ve heard compelling arguments that we should do away with the Olympic selection committee and just move it to Athens for every event. All the evidence shows most cities end up spending more than they make back and all these new facilities are built then underutilized.
I also don’t think there’s a team this year with that 90% chance to win every game. There are rare years where there is a truly dominant team that’s just better but this year doesn’t really have one. Make me feel a little better about our chances knowing everyone is really a long shot this year.

An interesting read about another team that dominates in conference.
Particularly liked the concept that Gonzaga has the best record of any team against the top six conferences and still loses 20% of those games which means winning 6 in a row vs quality opponents (needed for a national championship) is almost always a long shot for EVERY team.
It's wild, if you have a 90% chance of winning each game individually, you're only a coin flip to win all 6. At 80%, you'll only pull it off about 25% of the time. Say you're a 1 seed and the first game is a gimme and you're a 90% favorite in the remaining 5, you'll cut down the nets 60% of the time, 1/3 of the time if an 80% favorite. S/O to Prof. Haug at KU for drilling probability into my head. DSCI 202 can still GTH
Curious what the odds at craps are. Maybe calling it a crap shoot is generous!
Thought I’d bump this thread now that we are past the toughest stretch of the schedule in conference.
Sitting a full game up with 8 games to go.
Of those 8 only 2 are against ranked opponents and only 3 road games left.
Anyone still see 11-7 on the table?
Also, what happened to ISU? Remember when we thought they were good? Seems like a long time ago.

Did you or any other homers on this board watch the game without thinking Harris as the second coming of Frank???
It’s when JOE AND Harris share the floor was my point but we can analyze it all below.
Harris is a SOLID and i means SOLID backup pg (this isn’t sarcasm I am being 100% serious here). He plays starter minutes that’s the issue. Not his but the man who controls minutes.
https://kuathletics.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/1990141.pdf ↗
We turned it over 15 times in the game to their 6 and Texas wasn’t playing any pressure defense. Same issue has been mentioned with our rebounding problems..... Braun looking at you with 0.
Dave an absolute beast on 1 leg. He isn’t a legit KU big but he earned respect busting his tail while injured in the most physical game of the year.
Back to the web link:
Joe in at 14:59 for the first time and ran offense fine with no turnovers until Harris back in at 13:40Harris and Joe played until 9:45 with no turnovers bedsides 1 on Joe
Joe in at 6:07
Braun turnover 4:53
Och turnover 2:49
Joe our 2:25Harris turnover 2:06 and we know how the next 2 minutes before half played out
Joe in 12:21
6:49 Joe out no turnovers the entire almost 6 minutes the time we built the lead the most and looked the best both offensively and defensivelyThree turnovers while Joe played one being his own. 12 when he was out.
Switch minutes and I guarantee we’d win the game. Does it mean other guys couldn’t have performed better sure but 38 minutes to the guy who coach has said should play 25 shows coach is full of crap on his speech to the media.
Defensively because Joe can stop ball and puts pressure on guys. Offensively because even with 4 on 5 he attacks.
I'm not arguing Harris is the second Frank, but I am arguing Yes isn't either. Flipping minutes would not solve all our problems. In fact what is most likely is that new and exciting problems would present themselves.
Do think you found something calling out Braun on the boards. Needed him in there.
@kuballin10 "We constantly turned it over except when Joe was in the game."
This is a joke, right? Joe was in for all of 2 minutes without Harris and I'm fairly confident that was a 2 minute span where we got absolutely destroyed in the first half because of turnovers.
I'm in agreement with you that Yes is a weapon and needs to be utilized, but he still isn't ready to run the team. It's great that he can give Braun and Och a breather without the house falling down, but the house collapsed when he was taking over for Harris.

Got this from another site I belong to and a fan brought this up and think he makes a very valid point. - - WE shoot 58/56 % from the field- -Texas shoots 41 % - - Texas goes 3-20 from the three.
Why in the hell Didn't Coach go to a Zone isn't a goal to expose the other teams weakness , things that will help you win. - -Like he said we know Coach wants the team to show toughness , and hates playing a zone - -but sometimes a new look especially when you see that the other team is really struggling from that area - -take it - -use it to your advantage, also keeps them from rebounding even further - -Dam come on now, sometimes you got to do what you need to do.
There is no excuse when you shoot that much better from the field to get beat. - - Texas is not that much of an offensive team, they average 68.2 per game, goes to show also how bad our defense is - -they score right at 80 on us. - -how long had it been since they had done that. - -two glaring mistakes --Rebounds and defense
I think because in theory it's even harder to defensive rebound in a zone because in man2man it's each individual's responsibility to but a body on your man. In zone, you have to look first to see who is in your area. The first shot d was not a problem. The scout must have said let that one big shoot all the threes he wants and it worked. Problem was as you stated, we got beat to the long rebounds when they mattered most. Don't think zone would have stopped that.
I'd add to the "glaring mistakes" unforced turnovers. Texas wasn't really filling the passing lanes or stripping guys clean. It was mostly us fumbling drives, passing to people who aren't looking, forcing passes into guarded areas. Texas did a good job clogging things up but Ku didn't have to chuck it in the mud with them.
@drgnslayr I would add to the good that this team can score even against good defense and still was able to instill some sort of pace to the game even without a lot of transition buckets. Also, doubling up on that toughness comment. We've had teams in the past that would have shied away from that physicality and been bullied out of the arena.
I would add to the bad, Dave looked VERY injured at the end of that game. It looked to be a foot or leg thing.
@kuballin10 said in Tejas Game Thread:
Can someone explain the end of game through Self’s eyes?
Dave is on one leg, been great but the physicality and whistle swallowing on our end was evident.
Self thinks get a shot closest to the basket and that’s Dave even though he’d gotten clobbered missed and we’d all been mad why it wasn’t pick and roll with Ochai bringing it up and Braun popping.
Other option: elevator screen action
All eyes were on Och all game I’d run the play for him let Wilson fake the screen and roll to the rim....layup.Texas would be focusing on Ochai the defender following him all over than having to stop, pass him off and go oh crap I need to switch in which he’d freeze for a second. Works every time
In the biggest minutes guys are over aggressive on D....backdoor plays and little slips will win 90% of the time.
William calls these during the game but where coaches make their impact is those late game situations when your players can’t manufacture a play on their own.
Prioritizing though the closest to the basket yet guarded Dave shot versus top 10-20 pick having the ball in his hands is 100% why we’d deserve to lose.
-
I agree there probably had to be something better to end the game but having Och bring the ball up is NOT it. He's shown over and over again that is not his game.
-
If the elevator screen decoy idea worked every time why would any team run anything else ever?
-
The initial play call to get the ball in och's hands worked perfectly and a tad more loft on och's pass and dave is dunking.
-
I got really confused reading you call self William because I thought you were referring to Williams (the former coach) and could not figure out what point you were trying to make there!
-
In one thread you are criticizing Self's play calling to end the game because "where coaches make their impact is those late game situations" while in another you say, "Plays dont score the players do Guards win in March." Curious...
I'm actually glad we lost another close one coming down the stretch because it can refocus the team on the importance of execution. We'd had a nice little stretch of playing well to end the game and some of that can come down to luck if everyone is honest. The luck of that bank 3.
The luck of that Harris pass being tipped in. A rebound bouncing over a guy who had the better position. Missed calls this way, a charge/block that way. Etc.
I'm also glad we lost this one rather than the baylor game on saturday (though winning them both would obviously be ideal).
Had em and melted down.
