Grabbing slapping and bumping. Must be a buggy team.

Too sped up. Trouble with pressure D all year.
Looked like he was waiting for a bump on that drive and missed it out of shock that he went up unmolested.
Braun….
@wissox Dave’s playing good. Yes can get by his defender.

Terrible shot by Ochai. He and Jalen are just hanging around the arc waiting to jack one up...
Was there shot clock on that last one?

Him and Dave(????) the only guys who look quick today.
More like oh no!! Oh yes!!
Bill loves that from yes.
You’d think it was 7-2 the other way watching the contact.
And all the fouls being called the other way.
Big DAVE!!!

That injury hurt him in more ways than one.
Ugly stretch here.
Eek.
More bad from Braun.

Need em fresh if we want that kind of energy at the end of the game as well.

I’m honestly ok with Och taking a few so so shots because I think he needs to shoot more.

Guys looking like they coming out with some intensity early
Agreed. They look engaged and are playing with energy. Dave still can’t grab a rebound without it bouncing around his hands like a ping pong ball but his energy on d I think has the rest keyed up too.
They can’t look at that shot clock?
Ugh.
He moved a guy toward the basket!!
Um. Did Dave just play big on o in the paint?
Dave’s d on the high ball screens has been very good.
Unless your Harris apparently.
Bumping with impunity.
Tough call but Dave looks engaged.
Love the energy on the opening up though.
Dave wins a tip finally and it still goes bad…
@BeddieKU23 saw in the Jesse quick scout that they foul less. Or is it just that less fouls get called? Haven’t watched them play at all this year.
Will WVU bring the standard level of violence to this game or will they save it for Morgantown?
That song just sounds like college basketball.
That cbs intro music never disappoints.
We do NOT pay elementary teachers enough! Because of a shortage of teachers and subs, our district staff is all subbing at least one day a week. I got assigned to a 4th grade dual language class. The kids are amazing but DAMN teaching elementary is exhausting! The last time I was in an elementary school I was in 5th grade! (Except for that one time in 2008 I subbed for a kindergarten class and it was the worst day of my life!) The COVID roll call for teachers right now includes a LOT of absences!
@drgnslayr I honestly think if 2 or 3 of those happen, this team can win the big 12 and half or more has KU contending for a title. The team just isn't THAT far away and as tech showed on Tuesday, no team is unbeatable.
@kuballin10 Do you believe this is the WORST team Bill Self has ever put on the floor at Kansas? Because 11-7 would be the worst in conference record he's ever produced. Maybe if Remy never returns and we end up with another injury to say Braun or Och. But outside of that I don't see how this team doesn't win at least 12-13 games in conference.
@drgnslayr said in Bill Self "growth stunter":
I'm a fan of Remy. A big part is his cheerleading ability out on the floor. We need energy and emotion. Anything to help our guys play with enthusiasm.
But I'm not sure how he fits. Essentially, he is a freshman in Lawrence. He's stepping on a team where guys have been here for a while. I don't think his game has meshed with the rest of the team yet. Players have to figure out other players. The transition hasn't been smooth... plus his health is in question.
Right now our team is a hodge podge. Who is our PG and can he run the team? We need our offense to flow. I'm not seeing that happen with our starting 5, let alone, when we start substituting. Obviously... seeing Self jiggle the lineup so much indicates he's searching for flow. It isn't just about a player coming in and getting some points.
Where we are is frustrating. We have enough talent on this team to become a solid contender... but we play like a November team. We better keep our fingers crossed in hopes we don't hit some bad luck, like injuries come on. Our current margin for victory is razor-thin. We are capable of losing to every team in our league. Hate to say this... but with a little bad luck we could face the worst results since Self arrived here.
We had some crude play in recent years and Self turned to defense to save us. We appropriately named it "bad ball" because of the ugliness of games. I don't see this team being capable of defending enough for us to sweat through league games and come out on top.
Unless we show an evolutionary breakthrough soon... I remain pessimistic about our chances this year.
I really like this team! Maybe someone needs to spike the water jug with testosterone (joke). Anything to bring out some alpha in all our guys.
Agree that Remy is the emotional leader on the floor which is a little sad considering al the experience returning to this team. I do think Och is trying to develop that aspect of his game but might go against his natural tendencies. The brightest spot in that development WAS the end of that ISU game. After that last ISU bucket, he ran to the ball and DEMANDED it. Not something we've seen a lot of from Och. Yes, in the end he did give it up to Harris of all people to make the final play, but Och initiated which I think is key. I'm sure everyone thought Ochai would take the last shot which is why Harris was able to get to the rim (well, close to it at least). We also saw him trying to will himself and the team to victory. I think back to the deep three off the pass at the top of the key from Braun, and the pull up jumper at the elbow after a spin move to get open. He's trying to learn when to take what the d gives and when to take over and initiate. It's not an easy balance to find.
I've been in the camp for a while that believes this team's fate is unfortunately tied to the ability of Dave to produce. If Och can find that next level where he can truly impose his will on a game, that might not be true. I'd love for that development to be on d as well but one step at a time.
Bill thinks Och is the one. His comments after that game make that clear. Leading a team is a big job and Och is learning it's about more than making 47% of your 3 pointers. He'd be my pick too. He isn't a GREAT leader yet but there's still time and I'm taking that ISU game as evidence that he is making progress.

I know some people would rather lose the big 12 regular season because of a belief that that would somehow make KU more likely to win the national title,
Ha, I think you’ve confused regular season title and tourney title. Big difference. Many in the past have semi rooted to lose early in the Big 12 tourney to rest up, and not jinx our NCAA title hopes, right? Never heard anybody wish to lose the regular season title...
They are out there. Arguing that Self is unwilling to sacrifice losses in conference to make players better for the tournament and what not.
-
To me I'm thinking 13 or 14 wins will do it. 13 for a tie at the tope and 14 wins title alone.
-
Obvious tough games are the road games against the top half of the league and home games with Baylor, Texas, and Tech still to come. The good thing here is KU already played and won the normal trap game in Stillwater. I also think that after losing to Tech already, the Hawks will be ready to defend their home court against the Red Raiders. I think KU can weather ONE league loss at home and still win the league.
-
I think it's important to at least split with Baylor, Texas, Tech, and ISU. If KU does that and is able to win the rest, then we are watching the league champs and I'll be optimistic about the possibility of a run in March. This would make must win games, games like at WVU, one of the two Baylor games, at OU, etc.
-
Other than Baylor and KU I think it's tough to argue against Tech as the real 3rd threat to win the big 12. They've already beaten the two best teams in the conference and one of those on the road. That defense is going to be tough to crack. But because they are Tech and the big 12 is stupid good top to bottom, they will have slip ups. I see tech dropping a couple to bottom tier teams at some point and in the end it's a two team race with Baylor and KU. Whoever can hold serve at home, beat up on the bottom half of league, and steal a few from the top half on the road will be the winner. My money would still be on KU at this point because time and time again, Self has shown he can lead a team through the minefield that is the best conference in college basketball.
Those are my takes. What y'all got?
I know some people would rather lose the big 12 regular season because of a belief that that would somehow make KU more likely to win the national title, but for me, the first title KU can win this year is the Big 12 regular season so I want them to win it.
This year is already shaping up to be a crazy race with Baylor, Texas, Tech, KU, and ISU all ranked and WVU and Oklahoma just outside the top 25. To me this season will be as unpredictable as any in recent memory. With Baylor falling AT HOME to Tech last night and ISU coming extremely close to winning in the PHOG, it seems as if this is one of those years where anything can happen and even the strongest of teams will have setbacks.
How many wins does KU need to secure the title?
Where do the losses come?
What are the must win games?
Other than Baylor and KU, who is the biggest threat to win the league?
@Crimsonorblue22 said in ISU Game Thread:
That has nothing to do with anything. Harris is not about Harris. He's about moving the ball and setting up his teammates. The ball doesn't stick w/him. He penetrates and dishes. He does the dirty work. He had to play a lot of mins today without remy to help. He does have a nice shot, look at his throws. He lacks confidence, I think we can all see that. That will get better. He needed another guard to help bring up the ball against the press. Hence more to's than usual. Remy will get healthier and Bobby will get more practice reps.
Not sure Bobby is all the way healthy either.

@Kcmatt7 appreciate the input.
Should have tried this earlier but that’s been said plenty.
The proof I’d have is guys are leaving our program and bring more successful elsewhere. They have longer leashes, play with confidence ect. You’ll get the rebuttal of they weren’t KU material well they are at other D1 schools excelling. The goal as a coach is to have guys play their absolute best and when they do that elsewhere and not here that’s something that needs to be examined.
Nobody likes the teachers pet imagine how that feels being a player on the team watching the coach have 1-2 when you aren’t the favored one yet more talented and a way higher ceiling. I’d transfer too.
Remy came in with a me first attitude and got called on it. He bought in and started having fun winning then he got hurt. End of that story. When he’s healthy he will play big minutes. He and Dave are unfortunately what this season hinges on because they are the unknowns.
Say what you want about Harris but he makes plays in crunch time. Game winner tonight, diving steal the other day. He’s a gamer. Nothing flashy but all heart. I see why self loves him. Sad you don’t. Basketball is fun. Watching basketball is fun. Makes me sad for you that you can’t enjoy an exciting win over a top 15 team.
No one is going to accuse this team of peaking too early in the conference season. That’s for sure! But it will be interesting to see how they turn out in late February, March, and hopefully April.

Wow, getting it from all sides!
@approxinfinity said in Red Raiders:
@jayballer67 seems like Landen and Dave are almost identical tbh
I would argue they couldn't be more different. Lucas was the pinnacle of consistency but was never going to surprise you. He rebounded well in his area, scored the easy buckets, the Self offense set up for him, and was an average to slightly above average post defender who could usually handle his own man but was unlikely to provide a major shot blocking presence in the post.
Dave on the other hand is wildly inconsistent. As likely to give you 3 pts and 2 rebounds as he is to go 17 and 15. He rarely makes the easy rebound or bucket that Lucas could be counted on to handle. However, he has the potential to rebound outside of his area, make a jumper, occasionally even score one on one vs his defender. He draws help and attention in a way Lucas never did potentially opening up scoring opportunities for others. When he's at his best he can get a few weak side blocks and if not control the paint, at least provide some resistance on drives that get past the guards.
Maybe my memory is bad but these are the impressions I have of those two players looking back. All of the Dave potential is based on what we saw late in the season last year. We've seen very little of that this year.
