What an indictment! Seems like Self always seems to leave a humorous, self-deprecating comment in Fort Worth.

Getting to 6-1 first is a big deal.
Every road win -- yes even TCU and TT -- is a good road win in the B12 this year.
It was indeed UGLY, and yet at the end of the year, it may be considered to be an important part of a BEAUTIFUL collection of rings.
@Crimsonorblue22 agree-- officiating was not good... for us.
But then, our free throws were not great...(2 shots by Mason at the end would have relieved some drama).. Our energy was inconsistent and Oubre was sick..
painful to watch. When we are not our best, we seem pretty average. When we are at our best, we look like a top 5 team. Still very much a Jekyll and Hyde persona.

I had my doubts about this KU teams ability to last into March. They are making me a believer now.
I'm right there with you. The number of things that could prevent a deep run is dwindling day-by-day.
The one that is constant is injuries. That is hard to control... but among the things in our control, the only things I think could stop us are:
@ZIG :-)
I know.. I saw that and decided not to repost the picture with a big red arrow pointing because I knew it would stir emotions in some folks here... Like finding a hair in your favorite soup.
Sometimes it's better to be blind to the details ;-) to avoid the riotous denizens of KUBuckets..
Credit to Coach K on an amazing milestone. Would be silly to not recognize what he has done for three-plus decades.
The nice thing is that we've been right there with the Dukies. KU and Duke are the winningest programs since 1980 and are probably the closest thing to rivals that there is at the top of basketball.
@RockChalkinTexas Is this the one?

I like to think the "ceiling" is a mythical limit -- a threshold that exists only in our minds.
They can giveth and they can taketh away... It's a long season. That said, I'd rather be in the driver's seat rather than the alternative.

who do you think Coach Self took more from?
I think Hansen was a big influence because Self play under him and you have to believe that playing in a system will leave some residue forever.
Next, I think Larry Brown was a big influence because that was his first coaching job and Self was probably a sponge at that stage.
Next would be Hamilton and Sutton. I'm not sure which one had more influence here, but Sutton would be the favorite pick because of the pedigree reaching back to Iba.
BTW, I connect Self to Phog thus: Self coached for Brown; Brown played for Dean Smith; Dean Smith played for Phog.

The case ended up as a question in a MU Law School Exam; you can scroll down this link and look at the details. Amazingly but not surprisingly enough, the Chief of Police was cleared of all wrong doing.
Kind of provides some context for current events (Ferguson.)
awesome thread! Hilarious!
Ronnie Kellog is an under-appreciated Jayhawk...
Those of us that were fortunate enough to grow up watching that squad know that he, Calvin Thompson, Mark Turgeon, Cedric Hunter, Greg Dreiling, Archie Marshal and a teen phenom named Danny ushered in the Silver Age (1985-present) of Kansas Basketball.
I consider 1919-1958 the Golden Age of Kansas Basketball.
True... Actually, the game was changed three times.
First, hot shooting was a team effort, and that gave us an unsurmountable lead in the first half...
...Except it wasn't unsurmountable... Oklahoma did their best Seahawks impression and charged back to the lead.. and that was the second change.
Then, give Cliff credit for the rebound and BG credit for his Ron Kellogg-like instincts.
Just like that, the game was flipped; leaving me to wonder: Is this team TOUGH or FRAGILE?
Probably a combination-- we are either:
I switched underwear... I am hoping that counts ;-)

@approxinfinity I agree.. Not blaming this on the refs. I felt like we were lucky that it was as close as it was.
ISU deserved to win, given the way we played. I think we gave away more than 10 points. I like to think that bodes well for the rematch in Lawrence.
Here's something to ponder from the box score: Only three Jayhawks shot free-throws: Mason, Graham and Ellis.
Selden (5 for 11), Oubre (5-15), Traylor (0-5), Lucas (0-0) Alexander (3-3) -- were never fouled on a shot attempt (according to the refs.).
The comment about Perry getting fouls covering for guys that didn't guard looked obvious to me. The last two fouls that Perry committed-- especially the 5th foul-- he appeared to be purposeful as to say "see-- your man drove to the basket and now I have to foul."
The film for this game will be particularly instructive, provided the coaches can keep from exploding as they watch it.
Ridiculous. They are all going for the ball. Crappy home-cooked officiating. Should have been no-call if they were consistent with how they called things earlier.
Bilas, really? That's exactly why they have that rule.. It was in disgust.
WOW... We're shooting free throws!!!
No more time outs. 6:25 left. 14 points down. Still very possible for this to look like the Temple score.
after getting it down to 3, it balloons back to 11. :-1: Wait, make that 14
Games are just called so differently. Every crew does their thing.
A lot of the blocks come with a ton of contact.
Refs blew a call, but we are responsible for how we get back on D..
Ellis has 2 threes. If we could just get some points in paint, we'd be right in the game. But it feels like 80% of our shots have been low percentage.
Live and Die by the 3. Tonight, it may be the latter.
Can we even keep this close so we aren't embarrassed like the other 2 losses?
Why don't we DUNK dammit.
I don't remember a KU team hitting as many floaters as this one..
@Kip_McSmithers Surprising.. would have sworn we were out-rebounded.
yep.. I'm thinking about 10 points were because of fast breaks.
Will Perry have an impact when he's back in the 2nd half?
Maybe a Technical would get us fired up.
HCBS is much more composed over that foul than I am.
So far, i'm not tremendously impressed with the effort. Rebounding is really lacking.. Not getting back on D. Not enough to take a game on the road, I fear.

Something reached an inner nerve in EJ. Something survival based, because he turned his brain off for that game and played by reflex.
As I recall, EJ said that nerve was tweaked by HCBS - some sort of a questioning-his-manhood kind of pep talk -- and not slurs or provocations by ISU fans.
I relish the memory of his performance in that game. ... gives me a warm glow.
I saw Anthony Peeler do something like that in AFH... Seems like we're always on the other side of that kind of performance... but that time, it was our stud!

I wish we could play them at the beginning of the season like this year...oh well...
Maybe we'll get to play them again at the end of this season...
Iowa State is now 12-3 overall and 2-1 in conference
Should i update the title of this thread with the current record or do we like the old one that is undefeated in the B12 because it keeps us edgy and hungry?
I've recently wondered if part of the reason for Perry's performance is that teams are keying on him more than anyone else... Early in the season, Perry had some great games and established himself as the leading scorer (and no one rises to become the leading scorer more quietly than Perry).
Any team that wants to stop KU ought to focus on the leading scorer, who just happens to be the most experienced player on the team as well... He's been playing significant minutes since his freshmen year... had good experience in the summers... He's been pretty tough to stop unless you put some focus on him, like the B12 teams have.
The BEST news is that everyone is learning that just because you stop Perry, you haven't stopped Kansas. Everyone else is picking up around him.
Cliff Alexander's posterizing dunk is #1 on SportsCenter's Top 10 Plays of the Day.
too true
always the retaliation that gets called.. Nash is easy prey.
The game is on the edge of being beyond chippy.. Not sure what the next level is called.. Maybe 'choppy'
?????!!!
BS Technical foul
