Bleacher Report says... β€’ May 18, 2015 03:10 PM

@HighEliteMajor

Agree with your post, but isn't Vick the guy us "developer plan" guys want to recruit? There is nothing OAD about his game. He completely fits the prototypical Self "utility guard" concept to a T. Long, athletic (or will be), capable all around.

He is the afterthought because we were first focused on guys that could possibly make a monster impact next year, enough to put us over the top for a NC. Vick may not be that guy, but maybe he has 3 years in him as a Jayhawk and can make solid contributions all along the way. Maybe even a 4 year player. He is thin and a long ways from showing up on a NBA draft board.

My biggest like is the 11 rpg. That tells me he maintains a good amount of energy on the court at all times. Something we often lack. He might even be able to give us some fruitful minutes this year with his energy.

It is too early to say what he will become. I dream of him being the next TRele, but longer and more athletic later on. It would be something if this young man can become a defensive monster!

Terrance Ferguson β€’ May 18, 2015 02:48 PM

It would be a great step for us to land Terrance. First... if we don't land him, chances are we will face him either at OU, OSU, Baylor or Texas.

This kid has a lot going for his game, pieces that few other players have. He has one of the better shot releases I've seen in a young player in a long, long time. Very quick and precise release. It will be a big key to him making it in the league some day and will be a monster attribute for college ball.

I bet he has another inch or two in him with growth, and he looks to have an outstanding reach already. He might well be the next star 3 for us. I hope so!

Here is a recent video post on his play:

I'm not sure how much I like shuffling several players around in different positions. It sounds good on paper, but I think only certain players can be capable for mastering more than one position in a Self offense. There is so much complexity to Self's system, I think when guys move around in different positions they are doing too much thinking instead of just playing.

Bill has always said he could play Wayne at anything from 1 to 4... but it took him all year to get to where he could just produce at the 2. We take a huge gamble of wasting his year if we shuffle him around and he can't make the adjustment. Then he gets down on himself and we spend all year playing psychiatrist trying to get him on track. I think I'd tell Wayne right now he is a 2 and a 2 only. And that he needs to build on what he started doing late in the year last year. We need that Wayne showing up to more games if we want any hopes of a Final Four year.

Perry, on the other hand, is a guy that is already playing a big chunk of the role of the 3 and should get some of those minutes to help sell his game for next year's draft. The role of the 3 is to play aggressive and drive the ball, creating your own shot. Perry has some capabilities there, it is all about keeping him playing aggressive, and giving him minutes at the 3 might keep him sparked in a game. Hard to tell until it happens.

Svi is a natural 2. Not sure I see him as a real threat at the 3 until he strengthens up considerably. Since he is so young, it is possible he has another growth spurt and adds another inch or two and maybe even some natural expanding girth. Wouldn't that be something!

We've had some real luxury at the 3 for most of Self's tenure... it may be our weak spot this year... or not!

Anyways.... Bill has his "utility guard" signed now with Vick! Let's see what he is molded into. I'm very glad we signed him and see the potential he brings to our squad. I'm thinking of his motor on the court along with Cheick.... That is a lot of motor to have on the court with one team! Vick could turn into quite a defensive asset in the not so distant future!

Rock Chalk!

Vick commits β€’ May 18, 2015 02:22 PM

Vick has unlimited potential.

He is thin, but we shouldn't just assume he has to muscle up with Hudy before being an impact player in D1. He's a guard that averaged 11 rpg. That is the number that sticks out to me. He must be a guy with a motor and a nose for the ball to go for 11 rpg. Imagine if he can even average half that many in D1.

Others have mentioned it, and I will, too... I like that he represents a totally different look from the 2 instead of BG or Wayne. He could become a deadly weapon as soon as this March, if he takes to D1 quickly and Self's system. And he is a guy that can create his own shot, something Wayne and BG have a problem doing.

Thumbs up all the way with Vick! He's a nice addition and definitely not a OAD so he'll add to our extended depth.

@wrwlumpy

I'd prefer the TT allegation instead of the allegations made about several of their players mistaking the definition of "animal husbandry!"

"Williams III told CBSSports.com on Thursday that he is considering Kansas, after the school removed the restriction that would keep him from transferring to a Big 12 Conference school."

Guess why they did that? Because it was never enforceable. Just shows how they hustle their players. Luckily for Williams, he received proper assistance letting him know it wasn't enforceable.

New Rules changes β€’ May 17, 2015 08:20 PM

I think the officiating has become so inconsistent... from game to game and even half to half (NC Finals), that I'd rather see us set up 10 cameras on both sides of the court and have a computer call the game. I'm pretty sure if that had been the case for the Finals, Wisconsin would have been rightly crowned NCs.

Another issue is coaching. Coaches aren't looking for players that create for themselves. We've turned college basketball into this utopia "team concept" where teams even sacrifice winning because they'd rather see balanced scoring and more assists, when they should have focused more one one or two scoring studs that can't be stopped and foul out other teams key guys.

Let me put it this way. Imagine the Chicago Bulls back when Jordan was king of the world. Imagine Bill Self suddenly becoming their head coach and installing his "team concept" game. That would be the end of Bulls trophies. I'm not slamming Self for wanting to play team ball. But sometimes you just have to play to win and not care if scoring is lopsided. You play to your strengths and force opponents into compromising their defense in other areas in order to try to shut your strength down... then other guys suddenly get open. Then your scoring gets more balanced. Let opponents determine more if your scoring is balanced or not by how they defend. The key is to win, not just to have balanced scoring.

I'm curious how shortening the shot clock will impact all of this. I'd think coaches would think just a bit less on the "pass it around a million times before we think about shooting" concept of offense and more about just going to their strength. For that reason, I think it might help to shorten the shot clock. It is bound to force more players into learning how to create their own offense.

We even see how team defense falls apart, too. Weak side help is important, but we experienced several teams that were clever enough to feed off the collapses better than even scoring by the initial threat. I've never been a big fan of help defense. I'd sell my players on being responsible for their man and if they get beat, let them get beat and become humiliated rather than bail him out all the time. I was pulling my hair out when we had Withey in the paint and except for TRele, our perimeter guys really didn't care if they couldn't manage their man. I hated that. Credit Withey for earning a record amount of blocks... and also don't forget to credit our weak perimeter defense for giving Jeff so many opportunities.

I hope Cheick just compliments our defense, and doesn't become too much "the man" in the paint and our guards grow lazy.

Cliff and Frank the Tank β€’ May 17, 2015 06:00 PM

Frank is the man with the story.

He proves that players can improve all 4 years and lift their draft value considerably if they have patience and work hard.

This notion that older college players can't draft well is ridiculous.

New Rules changes β€’ May 16, 2015 07:00 PM

@konkeyDong

Right on. No guarantee point totals will climb.

I like a shorter clock in the last 5 minutes. I think I'm for a 30 (or even a 24) second clock in the last 5 minutes because in college ball, teams with a two possession lead with 5 minutes left starts slowing it down too much. And the teams behind have to start thinking of fouling way too soon. The NBA flows better at the end of a game.

So how about making the regular shot clock 30 or keeping it at 35, and shortening the clock to 30 or 24 the last 5 minutes? I know they won't consider it... but that is something I'd like to see.

So everyone and their dog has ISU slated as a Top 10 team this year. Well... welcome ISU! Welcome to "elite" status! Welcome to the party of rumor mills and media chaos! It is about time you jumped into the spotlight with rumors of your coach leaving, and questions about some of your players avoiding jail time. Welcome to the friggin' party! You wanted to be an elite team?! You sure that is what you want? The bright lights can burn holes through your skin, and right on through your soul!

@JayhawkRock78

"I hope he struggles even though we need better performance in the big 12."

I can go along with that. I'd rather see OU or ISU making a better name for themselves in college basketball. Lon and the Mayor are both quality coaches. I just want to see Texas start performing better in their sport... football.

And we have to figure this pigskin game out and start being competitive. It would lift us out of our financial worries, especially since implementing Title IX.

So the coach left. Now What? β€’ May 15, 2015 09:10 PM

I don't know how one coach qualifies as a legend and the next doesn't. I think it is a personal thing. There are many who still don't think Wooden is a legend.

Players seem to pick up the title "legend" easier. I've got EJ as a legend after he personally spanked ISU and their fans with... what was it... 39 pts? If I look down the list of college coaches that have won a national championship, I probably wouldn't call more than half of them legends. But I would call several coaches that never won a title, legends.

I don't believe math should figure in as to who is legend and who isn't.

In my book, Self is on his way to legend status, whether he wins another NC or not. I do think it will help add to the shine if he wins another one or two... or how about 5 more? How about he edges out Coach K, just so we can (once again) trump Duke.

The question to me... is Duke a basketball legend school? Remove K from the formula before answering. I could have guessed it was a Duke grad that bid up the basketball rules....

I'll be having dinner tonight with my Duke-grad nephew, who is in town visiting. We haven't spoken to each other since Christmas. I'm sure he will be full of pride about another championship. Over Christmas, we were both already licking our wounds from our assumptions that UK was on their way to winning it all. At least that didn't happen!

Glad we get a shot at Kentucky in AFH. After winning that game, I want another shot at Duke, this time in the FF next year!

"I will believe ISU is a great program when I see it and to me winning the Big 12 tournament and winning 2 of 3 games against KU (1 of those at home which they should win) is not that big of a deal. Maybe if they ever go past the Sweet 16 I will start to think of them as a premier school."

Essentially, the two games they beat us last year were ISU home games. I had a friend at the game in Sprint, and he said the ISU crowd was bigger. I know the power and light district looked predominantly ISU. No question that they posed a great challenge for us.

ISU is going to be very good this year. Top 5 good? I have my doubts.

The Mayor is a great competitor, so he should be going after the elite talent, too. I'm just not ready to say they ought to be running head-to-head with Kansas... anymore than I think WSU should either.

BTW: WSU ought to be pretty good this year, too. We'll have to wait and see, but I think they might be better than ISU.

I have to give my thumbs up more to Larry over Roy. I remember when Larry came to Kansas. The word was "we need a coach that will restore the winning tradition of Kansas basketball." Ted won a lot of games, but we were in desperate need of another National Championship. Larry accomplished that task in a relative short order. Roy couldn't quite get there and I was always upset with his recruiting rule of not going East. Always makes me mad even today when UNC recruits a player west of North Carolina. Other than that... Roy was a great coach.

@Statmachine

How is that legally binding? He's already played two years at Mizzou, and every year in college sports is a new "contract" year. The way I see him is he is fair game but must sit a year regardless where he goes.

Iowa State... Feeding Off Of Kansas Basketball β€’ May 14, 2015 03:06 PM

What Bill Self knows that other Big 12 coaches don't know... is that we have to take the Texas Techs just as serious as Texas, because a loss is a loss. Just ask Iowa State about that lesson...

Iowa State... Feeding Off Of Kansas Basketball β€’ May 14, 2015 01:14 PM

Iowa State is feeding off of Kansas basketball.

That is the only explanation possible for how they are starting to make a lot of 5-star recruits final list.

I know a sports clown or two has Iowa State picked as a Top 5 team in preseason polls. No one takes that serious, least of all recruits. There is nothing going on in Ames that indicates the Cyclones will be a Final Four team this year, let alone even an Elite Eight finisher.

Iowa State is feeding off of Kansas basketball.

I don't want to sound like some typical pompous sports fan. Iowa State has a solid program and the Mayor deserves all the credit in the world for building up their program. But it is hard to fathom how they could make a 5-star recruit's final list without the help of Kansas.

A big chunk of the elite recruits have Kansas on their final list, even if they really aren't considering Kansas. It's an "elite thing" that helps bring elite attention to players. From the elite recruits that Iowa State has on their list, inevitably the same recruits have Kansas on their list or Kansas is recruiting them, too. The idea is, if a top recruit is considering Iowa State, he has a higher priority on Bill Self's list because Kansas would score a double-whammy with his signing. Like Cheick Diallo. Kansas scored a top recruit that filled a very big hole. We also prevented Iowa State from filling a very big hole on their roster. Cheick needed no extra incentive from Bill Self... he is THE premiere post presence available this year and he is filling a very big hole!

Every sports talk guy in America has been dying to find another team in the Big 12 that can beat Kansas. The crazy conference title streak owned by Kansas is taking valuable air time away from the teams they like to promote. Iowa State has now beaten Kansas what... 4 of the last 6 times they played? That is enough of an incentive to drop Texas, Oklahoma and Baylor into the shadows and just focus on Iowa State. So now, in one breath, Iowa State is mentioned along with Kansas.

We all know that Bill Self can give recruits a big bounce upwards when he recruits them. The basketball world gives Bill Self credit for being able to spot talent. After all, where did Joel Embiid go to college?

What is some of the language used at Iowa State to recruit top tier talent? Might their language include the word "Kansas" many times? "You'll get to beat Kansas several times a year!" "Bill Self will be hunting you down as a recruit when you put us on your list!" "In this particular poll, we are already ranked ahead of Kansas!" "Be a part of the historic team that knocks off Kansas from their conference streak (making sure not to mention "historic" conference streak)!"

What is missing from the sales pitch in Ames is the word "legend"... a word needed in any conversation about Kansas basketball. What players need to realize is they have two chances in life to become legends in this sport; one at the college level and one at the pro level. It means something at Kansas to have your stat line compared to many of the basketball greats of all times. Who will you be compared to at Iowa State?

I apologize for having to raise a topic where my answer requires me to raise my nose in the air... I don't like having to mention status very often, but in this case it is befitting to clarify where teams fit and where they don't!

So the coach left. Now What? β€’ May 14, 2015 12:35 PM

@HighEliteMajor

"You can't just sell out and say win at all costs."

This is the state of college basketball. Many say Calipari will do anything to win. And so our 2012 team became just a footnote beyond Lawrence.. falling to Calipari and the unibrow. The story for college basketball in that year was the story of Thomas Robinson. And how a team and community gathered around him with support. The cherry on top of that story was to win a National Championship... but we were denied by a revolving door team.

I know many in here don't like WSU. But two years ago... they deserved a shot at winning it all but faced that same franchise school.... there to erase everyone elses history... Well... karma is a b#tch because those same franchise clowns tried to set their own history this year and were denied. There must be a God.

College basketball is one big sell out. This is a freight train with no brakes. And we are fans that can't expect any breaks moving forward. The Goliaths have been anointed. Kansas appears to be one of them. We are one shoe deal away from running a complete stake. Whoop-tee-dooo! We can be another Kentucky!

I hope Thon's story becomes huge. Because it helps expose several problems in college sports all at the same time. Why was he directed to a pathway of ineligibility? Why can't he be fast forwarded through the process in the fall to jump right into classes and have an entire year of D1? Why can't he have proper agency now so amateur nutjobs who represent him don't botch his PR before he even makes a buck at basketball?

How can anyone be prevented from making a living at what they do? How can the NBA legally restrict players from earning a living?

This Thon kid sure looked like he was going to explode onto the basketball world. Now it just looks like he is going to explode. A big chunk of what is setting him back is exploitation. In the "land of the free" and "home of the brave" we've managed to give the keys of just about everything to monopolistic corporations or institutions.

I'm not ready to blast Thon for being a kid. I was a kid once, too, and capable of exploding my own life without even a drop of the dynamite Thon has in his world.

@HighEliteMajor

I hear what you are saying... but none of us really know Thon's intentions. We'd have to trust Self on this one. My guess is that Self will evaluate if he thinks he can keep Thon for another whole year. That would change the picture dramatically. Imagine if in a year he actually lives up to the hype? And we have most of our team returning as seniors. Keeping Bragg... and maybe even a long shot at Diallo.

Using a Calipari sales tactic here... but... imagine the draft stock of all these players if they are rolling into the NBA draft with a National Championship?

Does that matter? Who knows. But it is sales material all the same... not only for landing players but getting them to stay an extra year.

I'm starting to think the real advantage in selling players isn't just to land super elites. It is to get some of them to stay one more year. That didn't work for the squid this year, but he isn't a coach, he's just a babysitter.

Seemed to help us in 2008. BRush wasn't really sold to stay (by Self), but his injury made his decision for him, and I'm doubtful we win in 2008 without him.

I then looked at my sister, neither of us said a word, but we both had a big smile. I should check, but I think my sister still has our collection of 45s. Those became the big deal around that time.

We spent a big chunk of the 60s at a nearby diner that had the nickel jukeboxes at each table. I can't recall, but I think we got 3 plays for a nickel. Between that and radio, our lives changed around all our musical discoveries.

@Kcmatt7

In my books, Svi already knows much of the tougher parts of the game to learn. Last year he needed some defensive polishing on how to fight through screens, etc. And then he needed more strength. Part of that is just for him to get a year older. If he pushes it all summer in the weight room, he should be a different player this coming year.

The last step is for him to have the uber confidence it takes to be a guy who earns the basketball spotlight. He has to cross a hurdle most of the other players don't have in front of them... he has to build uber confidence in another country.. the country that created the game of basketball. The country that made all the film footage he has been watching his entire life, dreaming about being a real ball player.

The same holds true for players like Cheick.

I'm always amazed at these players when they do build the confidence to challenge (or surpass) American players at their own game.

I hope Svi feels himself worthy to take over the game this year. He has to step up and fight for his minutes... knowing he is worthy to be one of the best, even if he is not American.

This particular episode is definitely up there at the top, just because it shows us all how a Jayhawk took his spirit and made something big happen.

What I would like to see happen now, is someone with this same passion for Jayhawk history to step up and plot more of the basketball legacy in Lawrence. Uncover some of the other historic points, and put them on the map at Lawrence. Build this into a basketball tourism project so visitors can come and acquire a basketball map of all the key points in Lawrence. Everything from Naismith's grave to AFH. There must be several spots in between. The game of basketball deserves to be documented properly and setup to tell the story of how this game came to be one of the great sports on the planet.

Wow... a guy that knows how to use a shot fake. What a rare treat, especially for us guys who appreciate smart ball over dumb ball just requiring shear athleticism to make plays.

Which Guard? β€’ May 11, 2015 09:19 PM

@jayballer54

I know some Jayhawks don't like LeBryan Nash from OSU... but I heard Eubanks looks and plays exactly like Nash. He's a couple inches shorter (but good chance he still grows a couple).

Offseason is too long β€’ May 11, 2015 06:19 PM

@wissoxfan83

"This is what's wrong with losing early in March. We are left with too long of an offseason with too much negative energy left over from the previous one."

I think that is what all the chat in here helps solve over these months... to forget last March and focus on the future and positive possibilities!

Ready For Some New High/Low Offensive Wrinkles? β€’ May 11, 2015 03:17 PM

BTW: If Cliff doesn't get a guaranteed contract... might he play with us at WUG this summer?

BTW: I didn't even mention what Bragg might bring to the table and the hi/lo! Not sure what he contributes his freshman year, but anything he contributes is icing on the cake!

""Listen to Self in the off season at your risk.""

Hence, my definition of Self... "the Riverboat Gambler!" I never pay too close attention to Self in the off-season, and before big games. All of his comments are coded and done for a specific purpose, like to mislead competition, or to possibly recruit a specific player, yada yada. This is a part of coaching and he is good at it! Praise be, to the Riverboat Gambler!

Here is what I'm see for this coming year...

I'm seeing Self run the hi/lo better than any year he's ever run it!. The twins were capable... TRob and Withey.... capable... but the new duo of Ellis and Diallo should be phenomenal! I know Cheick is only a freshman, but look at his role... He is the counter to Ellis, not another Ellis.

This will be Perry's big year. No holding back. He'll be attacking the basket. He'll be attacking the 3-pt line. He'll be attacking midrange. Perry will lift his scoring numbers. And Cheick... he is the counter to Perry. He will be the high-energy guy. He will be the guy that is either fighting for position on the offensive glass, or making a late cut when Perry has the ball somewhere around the paint. Perry is a pretty good passer when a guy is wide open. How are teams going to double Perry? How? And leave the new monster in town, Cheick, open under the rim?

I think what can help Self run his hi/lo the most is all the wrinkles he has added the last couple years, especially last year. Jamari and Perry scored best while catching the ball in motion, instead of standing flat-footed with their backs to the basket. This wrinkle should stay in the hi/lo. It may take a while before Cheick becomes a legitimate back to the basket scorer, but he can surely score well while in motion. And with his big time motor, he'll create a lot of opportunities to score while in motion. The only thing I'm left wondering is how well of a passer Cheick is? I bet he'll be good by March!

Tevin Mack β€’ May 11, 2015 01:59 PM

"Former VCU commit Tevin Mack did not orally commit to Texas on his unofficial visit over the weekend, his mom, Paula, tells Zagsblog.com. Mack, a 6-foot-6 senior wing out of Dreher High in Columbia, South Carolina, is still considering KU and Georgia. He’s also had Clemson, UCLA and West Virginia on his list of schools. Last week, Paula said her son would hold a Skype conference with KU’s coaches, who would take Tevin on a video tour of KU’s campus and facilities."

Wow.... we compete with a video tour? Doesn't sound too likely for us, but then, the video tour of the new apartments might finally help us land a recruit!

I wonder, with all their money in Austin, what the player dorms look like?

True... and I only have 10% of his!
