The Recruitment of John Lucas • Feb 13, 2015 02:34 PM

I've always been a huge John Lucas fan.

Pretty impressive NBA stat sheet:

Points 9,951 (10.7 ppg) / Assists 6,454 (7.0 apg) / Steals 1,273 (1.4 spg)

This is the guy that helped Tyshawn Taylor put his game together in just a short period before TTs senior season.

This is the guy I want Kansas to hire as an assistant coach.

This is the opportunity for Kansas to leapfrog right over Kentucky. We've matched their luxury suites now.... It's time to take the next step in college basketball. Pay the big bucks for an assistant coach that can really make a difference.

Every 5-star HS guard recruit in the country would line-up to sign for Kansas. We wouldn't even have to recruit, just answer the phone.

Entice Lucas with his own gym and business to train young players during the summer.

But seriously.... where is all the fat on this boy I've been reading about?

Big ManU: Wake Forest and DMan • Feb 13, 2015 01:57 PM

Interesting read.

Makes me focus back on Kansas. Former owner of the title, "Big Man U", and current team that can't score in the post.

That brings my eyes to Cliff. Cliff is the test for Kansas trying to prove we can still develop big men without the services of Danny Manning.

JoJo was an enigma. But he could have helped gloss over our reputation for a while if he had stayed healthy in March and taken Kansas somewhere.

Cliff, on the other hand, is raw steak. Will he become properly seasoned, aged, smoked and grilled to perfection by Head Chef Bill Self? Or will he be shoved out the kitchen door and served up ground and raw..... beef tartar, anyone?

Cliff needs to stick around another year or two, no question about that. If he leaves this spring for a shot at the league he becomes our big man version of Josh Selby. I bet that kid would like to go back in time and change his decision.

Interesting take on the recruitment of Maker. Bring in Giles for a year and keep him around when Maker comes in. Not a bad idea, but just having quality bigs isn't going to take a team to the promised land. You need guards of equal quality.

And while we are talking about bigs and building a post presence.... let's paint a better scenario for Maker. Imagine if he qualifies for 2015 and joins up with Alexander and Braggs? Sounds like a better deal to me, because he'll also get the assist services of Mason and Graham. Someone has to create the space and feeds to the post.

As much as there might be questions if Kansas can still develop bigs like they could with Danny here.. there exists the same question for Danny at Wake. Can he still develop bigs and also be the head coach? Danny's biggest responsibility at Kansas was to develop bigs. He doesn't have that luxury of time anymore. He has to coach a team. I think that deserves every bit the scrutiny of questioning if Kansas can still develop bigs.

@Crimsonorblue22

It never affected my play... I always knew I was going to turn it over! :-)

@DanR

I can't really explain BamBam's play this year. In some ways it seems like Self has geared our entire offense to benefit him. He's been given turf everywhere except the side perimeter. He knows his strength in scoring is to score in motion, kind of a layup a few feet from the goal. Yet, he doesn't seem to be taking advantage of his circumstances. It's like he is trying to mask some esteem issues.

He may not have super speed in comparison to guards, but in the post, he might have the fastest legs in our league, but he isn't taking advantage of his lateral speed.

Maybe he is over-thinking the game. He has settled in to starting, feels the heavy burden, and over-thinks everything on the court. That can build anxiety and hesitation... seems we've seen both of that in him this year.

He may not have the skills of a 5-star recruit, but he should be able to match several other post players in the B12. I hope he figures out his issue because we are going to need good minutes out of him from here on out. Whether he starts or not!

Thanks.... We lost my mother-in-law to breast cancer. It was tough in all areas.... emotional and financial. I don't want to single out anything in particular... I just wish there was someone lobbying for us. I appreciate the efforts of your wife! Through all of this we met many people in the health industry that was very kind and as helpful as they possibly could be.

I know that is part of it... but you don't think the AMA gives all those millions to Washington for the heck of it, do you? Costs are high because everyone involved in the process goes for full profit. Insurance companies, lawyers, hospitals, doctors (and their groups), pharma.

Capitalism is built on profiteering. I'm not against that. But who is in Washington lobbying for the consumer? Right... no one.

"You mean a small mom and pop business isn't about profit? I'm sure Jayhawk Tire is about profit."

Hey... I'm a capitalist. And I don't mind big business having financial incentives to innovate products, including medicine.

But they control medicine now in it's entirety.

Ever wonder why America has one of the highest costs for health care in this "free market" system? There is nothing free market about medicine in America... absolutely nothing. Did you know the AMA is the #1 spender of lobby dollars in Washington?

Have you ever had to pay out of pocket expenses for chemotherapy? Would you deny a loved one medicine if the cost of it was $5000 per month? How long could you afford to pay that?

I've been in that situation, including with a loved one who was insured. This was before Obamacare... and I'm pretty sure big improvements haven't happened since it became law.

On the recreation side..... if marijuana was hard to get and grow, and if a business could possess all the rights to it, we would have had legal (federal) pot ages ago because that corporation would have lobbied for it. Snacks wouldn't be facing this issue, unless he bought his stuff underground.

Just my humble opinion.

I'm going to send Huggy a bouquet of roses after conference play, thanking him for bringing his unique style of play to the B12. We couldn't ask for more diversity in our league this year. The fact that we play them twice gives us two opportunities to practice in a live environment on beating full court pressure and half court traps. Bravo, Huggy Bear!

He is helping all the B12 teams prepare for March.

I'm thinking crimson/blue roses...

Riverboat Gambler • Feb 12, 2015 09:28 PM

@JayHawkFanToo

Right on about WVU. I caught that game. KSU really blew it.

My concern is we don't work on beating their press until Sunday afternoon... leaving us no time to prepare for WVU. I believe we are focused on Baylor now and right through to tip off on Saturday.

I believe this is part of Self's "toughening teaching." Throw the boys to the wolves and see how they react. There isn't time to prepare for this game anyways.

And it may be the best thing for us to get hammered in Morgantown! All we have to do to win #11 is win out at home and win in the Sherronagon... maybe even without that.

@HighEliteMajor

"I had viewed him as the perfect big off the bench coming into the season."

I think you need to keep to this concept. He is maybe the only guy on the team that fully understands his role and has an identity... "the energy guy."

So he shouldn't have ever really been a starter. Energy guys are what you want as your 6th man (or 7th or 8th).

Team strategies are built with your starting 5. You structure your defense, offense, in-bounds plays, everything... mostly off your starting 5. BamBam doesn't have enough of a toolbox to own one of the five positions and you certainly don't build your team strategies and structure around him. He's an energy guy... period.

I believe he is in a slump because he is absorbing more than he can handle. We need to get him back on a singular mentality; to be the energy guy!

I'm really expecting a big bonus off of moving Cliff into the starting role and having BamBam off the bench. It will do Cliff good to get a ton of minutes (if he can stay out of foul trouble). And it will do BamBam good to fulfill a role he can handle.

I'm hopeful this already starts to soak in and work this weekend. I'm hopeful both Cliff and BamBam have good games and putting their energy together as one, they dominate Rico!

Interesting comments in here on pot.

I believe I have a different perspective from most. I lived a majority of my adult years in a country that had a tolerant policy towards possessing and selling pot (in certain quantities).

First thing to note: In many ways, pot should not be considered similar to alcohol and other mind-altering substances. Pot has no levels of toxicity. You can't OD on pot. There may be some level of toxicity created from burning pot, but that is often disputed, and for medical purposes there are known safe methods for ingesting this substance. For recreational purposes, in the area of toxicity, it is a clear winner over alcohol. There is no valid argument left on this. Done.

There are other issues regarding responsible use that are unique to pot. THC stays in the body for long periods of time, and regular users build up levels in their bodies and there is a definite question as to whether or not they should be operating equipment like cars and planes while having a lifestyle of use. Technology is about to bring us better measuring devices and policies can be set with the goal of public safety in mind. There is no way around this. It is the right thing to do, regardless which side people are on this issue. Public safety needs to be the #1 consideration. Because of the lingering effect, it will be hard to keep pot in your lifestyle while desiring to operate motor vehicles or other equipment. Just look at the constant lowering of acceptable alcohol limits. It will be equally stringent on pot use. But the issue with pot is that 24 hours later you will still maintain a measurable amount of THC in your body, and further use will increase that amount. This is very different than alcohol.

From a medical perspective... I have problems with the direction of our society. Medication is being highjacked by profits. Adequate studies cost extreme amounts of money, and the only way to get these studies done is to have a financial carrot in front of big pharma. I'm sure they are busy now gobbling up patents on synthetic processes involving components of pot. Patents create the opportunity to make big money through protection. The focus isn't on helping people... the focus is on profits.

There are institutions in this world that are studying the medical effects of pot. In most cases, those studies have been (and will be) criticized for not meeting certain standards. Standards controlled by associations and industry that are driven by high profit.

I guess it comes down to basic beliefs. Do you believe your health care should be controlled by for-profit corporations? Do they have your interests at heart? Have you ever read corporate charters before? Do you realize there is nothing written into corporate law that involves medical ethics? No mention of the Hippocratic Oath. Nothing. The structure of a corporation is about controlling profits, ownership and power. In fact, those persons running a corporation who make decisions based on medical ethics above their own corporate interests are breaking their contractual obligation to shareholders. Corporations are strictly about profits.

I tend to side towards pot for medical purposes because I also believe in natural treatments over synthetic medicine. I put synthetic medicine as a last resort option. And the testing provided to qualify modern medicine is a complete joke. The testing is performed by labs that are hired by the pharmaceutical companies. No bias there, right? Synthetic science has extreme flaws in it's very basic structure.... to find an effect from a substance, then provide that substance in high isolated amounts. It turns out that mother nature knows something about providing help to illness, especially since probably 99% of our survival came through natural treatments (Google Chinese medicine). It turns out that the safest treatments come from natural-occurring compounds and not isolated substances. It is through these compounds that nature works its magic and help comes with less or no side effects because the other elements in the compound play a role in the outcomes.

Synthetic medicine is not the backbone of our modern day rise to quality of life and health. That has come through other advancements, like water treatment and public waste management. That isn't to say that modern science and isolating elements are a total flop. Chlorine is a dangerous substance, but it has helped sterilize our water supply from dangerous pathogens in an economical fashion.

I'm expecting a monster performance from BamBam. He'll be coming off the bench, and he is ready to make a statement again.

He will be a key player in this game because it is very possible that Cliff gets in foul trouble. Plus.... the combination of Cliff and BamBam to deal with Rico will be too much energy for Rico to handle. Advantage: Kansas.

This is a game where anything could happen, but it is all in Kansas' hands. Whether Baylor is hot or cold, it will be up to Kansas to determine the outcome.

If we feel like we still have something to prove, and also feel a real need to defend our home court, then we shouldn't have a problem with Baylor.

If we feel cocky after our positive second have performance against TT, then we can suffer a loss, especially if Baylor gets hot.

It is all in our hands... win or lose.

Everyone needs to be held accountable and bring game on Saturday... (and every game after that)

I don't think this story is complicated. Our drug laws are complicated. But laws are laws and are meant to be followed.

In this case, with a high-profile job working with youth, Jerrance will have to face definite consequences.

It is hard to comment too deep on this without knowing all the details. But I'll think out loud and voice my opinion...

If I was Jerrance, I would take the offensive and fight for my job. Even though he should have come out with this to Self when it happened, he can still put his best foot forward now.

  1. Enter a rehab program.... Whether or not he is still using, do the right thing and seek help. This is setting the example for the kids he coaches.

  2. Make a public statement.... Discuss this with Self before doing it so he won't be caught off guard. Admit guilt publicly along with what steps he must do (responsibly) moving forward. Apologize to Self, his players, the university and the fans.

  3. Commit even more.... Find a way to commit himself to helping youth on the drug issues. Maybe he becomes a counselor. It doesn't even necessarily have to be directly related to drug rehab... perhaps he starts a program to help kids find something else to do besides smoke pot.

  4. Commit to the Athletic Department.... Trust has been lost with him and the AD. He has to structure a plan and commitment for transparency in the future.

If he doesn't take a proactive role in this, he should most-likely leave his position... either by resignation or termination.

Coach Bill Self has us all just where he wants us!

Yes.... it seems everyone has been jumping all over Coach Bill Self lately for several things, including his definition statement that our spectacular 3-pt shooting is nothing more than "fool's gold."

We've all bit the bait, and Coach has us right where he wants us.... selling this fairytale to his team and to opposing teams.

We all need to take a step backwards and think this out. Base everything moving forward on the knowledge that we have on Coach and his ability to carefully parse his words. Coach is a very capable man with his vocabulary and he realizes that statements are capable of being very powerful. Hence the statement, "fool's gold!"

Put yourself in Coach's shoes.... how would you play it? Contrary to everything that has been said, by everyone, there are certain facts about this team that can't be changed by smoke and mirrors.

Fact #1: This team does not make "back to the basket" points and appears to not be able to do so in the near future.

Fact #2: This team is the best (or one of the best) perimeter shooting teams in the nation.

So why on earth would Coach criticize the brightest spot of his offense? Why?

First, he wants to put a chip on his players to do their best to prove him wrong. Coach knows there is imminent danger that comes when teams get hot from the perimeter.... often they get cocky. With attitudes changing unfavorably it brings obvious side effects: guys start playing lax on defense, and start taking ill-advised shots feeling like everything will go in. With Coach's statement he has set the bar for these guys and they'll have to earn their worth and convince Coach that finding success from the perimeter is more than "fool's gold."

Second, if you are an opposing team preparing to play us, you will do your homework. Since this team's skill set is so lopsided to the perimeter, it makes scouting us easy. Simply... guard the perimeter! But is that all they have to worry about? Especially when Self is telegraphing to the entire world that we must focus on interior scoring?

Wake up, people... you've bitten on his bluff! We are all being played on this hand, and Coach is about to rake in a big jackpot for his team!

You all were right, Cliff is a starter. • Feb 11, 2015 10:46 PM

@ralster

Interesting read on Frankamp. I don't have any inside track on anything with this team, or in Frankamp's corner. I met him briefly once and what stuck out most to me was how small he was.

It did seem like his dad was too involved. Prodding fathers need to take note. Coaches can't be "coached" by every players' dad. Let's see..... one head coach and 15 assistant coaches? Not going to work.

I threw that in there because I wondered if Frankamp's unhappiness was maybe part about PT, but more about Self philosophy towards post scoring and not the 3. In that area... it looks like a train wreck.

You all were right, Cliff is a starter. • Feb 11, 2015 10:41 PM

@benshawks08

Lots of super points in your post.

None more spot on than "Self is a teacher."

I think he's having to learn to change many things because of the change in college basketball. Most of the talented players don't stay 4 or 5 years. Remember just a few years back when he liked to keep many guys for 5 years? That works perfect in his style of coaching... "Self ball." But it really doesn't totally transfer over into the current state of "revolving door" basketball.

He does have a lot in common with Coach Pop. But unfortunately, the world he is in doesn't allow him to have players for a decade and longer.

I believe in more of the NBA-style coaching of playing to your current strengths instead of playing off your diehard philosophy because Kansas basketball doesn't get to see a lot of its stars for 4 or 5 years. We have to play using strategies to help us win NOW!

I wouldn't trade Self for any other coach in basketball... but I do have to admit that I'm getting a real man crush on the Mayor. I see that guy lifting to some major heights sooner rather than later. His next step is to be able to recruit athletes one star higher. If he is able to pull that off I think we can expect to see them do more than compete with us. I do think it will require ISU proving to Self that offense is important before Self is all in on some of this stuff.

Self is tough, stubborn and has learned from many great people and coaches. He isn't quick to jump on trends and changing. We can't forget that what we are asking him to change is a big part of what brought him to greatness. This isn't the first time fans and sportswriters have questioned his philosophy, or the philosophy of his mentors.

I like this read on him:

Kansas basketball: The man Bill Self Jr. inherited his toughness from will present his son at hall induction ↗

@wrwlumpy

I really think it is more than that. I agree with @HighEliteMajor and it isn't right calling 3s "fools gold" because it sends negative energy around shooting 3s. Brannen Greene is the "keeper of fools gold."

Self is usually pretty careful how he parses his words. That has always been something we all appreciate, especially since he came after Roy, who was famous for ticking off people with his comments.

Self does allow the 3-ball from most of his team. This is a major step from where he used to be. And guys are given more leeway.... less quick hooks, etc. And by doing that we are suddenly a remarkable 3-pt shooting team.

But "allowing" and "supporting" are not the same thing. Self needs to embrace the identity of this team, which is a "perimeter shooting team." In that area, he is slow to come around. He still is focused primarily "inwards out"...

What difference does it make if we shoot 20 or 40 3pt shots per game? We should take what the defense gives. If that is 100, we take 100!

I am optimistic he is changing some. As much as he has forced his philosophy on his team, his team has forced their own identity back on him. Everyone is getting a lesson in this, including Self.

I bet after the year is over, Self will mention this. I just hope it isn't one of those speeches like "I should have listened more to my guys" after a painful end-of-season loss.

@benshawks08

"Are the players finally taken ownership of this team and playing to their own strengths?"

To some degree, yes! I believe these guys really believe in the 3. And I think they want to prove it is more than "fools gold" to Self.

Maybe this is all just Self playing another poker hand. He is the master at controlling his information. The guy doesn't speak with loose lips. Maybe he just wants his guys to prove it. So he has put the carrot in front of them, to prove the 3! That wouldn't surprise me a bit.

All of us in here sometimes take him too literal. Sometimes we just need to sit back and watch the drama take place in front of us. It's not like we are dealing with a coach that loses many games! We should be able to cut him a little bit of slack and trust his judgment now and then!

Watch out everyone... I'm as capable of flipping opinions every bit as much as the political clowns we elect in DC! Maybe I missed my calling!!!

@HighEliteMajor

BTW... loved your posts in this thread!

"Self laments a fiction. That team can't rely upon threes because teams could take that away, or you could have a bad shooting night, as if that can't happen underneath. "

Precisely.... and guess what... if your guys have any kind of motion in the offense it is harder for teams to take away the 3 than it is the post. Look at how much territory they have to cover versus the tiny confines of the post! We've experienced years of this in post season... where suddenly our post play dries up because of double and triple teams. And then that would open up our outside but we've had a year of hi/lo offense and our guys didn't know where the scoring seams were or have the confidence to hit the 3s, especially in March. And seriously... being a good perimeter shooting team is a lot more than just hitting a few shots.. it is all about the structure of the offense.

Self is really fighting all of basketball. Most everyone else has realized how valuable it is to be good from 3. The NBA (which has a 3pt line further out) is completely geared towards the 3... even bigs need to be capable at that distance.

This team continues to smoke from the 3pt line in spite of what Self is running on offense. Last night... heck... we were still hitting 3s and running God knows what on offense. Many of our shots were contested, many even blocked. But we still pursued the natural identity of who we are and we prevailed.

This really has become a battle for identity, between Self and his players.

None of us want Self's head on a stick. We just want him to step all the way out of his comfort zone and take advantage of this very talented team!

You all were right, Cliff is a starter. • Feb 11, 2015 08:10 PM

@wrwlumpy

Sorry if I've worn out your eyeballs today!

This is my last point. I'm just trying to express the difference I have with Coach Self... who (btw) I have the up most respect for everything he has done.

We play Baylor on Saturday in AFH.

If Self could choose any outcome he would like it would be: A low-scoring, grind-out game where our defense showed up for 40 minutes of basketball. Our offense sputtered, so we had to rely on our defense, and they came through. We only shot 29% from the field, 15% from 3, but we won by 18... 49 - 31.

If I could choose any outcome, it would be different. I would love to see our guys put 40 minutes of basketball together on both sides of the ball. I'd like to see our defensive hustle inspire our offense, and vice-versa. I would like to see periods in the game where one side of the ball wasn't working well, but the other side stayed tough and helped us keep a safe margin. I'd like to see that happen on both sides of the ball. Last... I'd like to see this team put their high tops on the throat of Baylor and never look back. I'd like to see us blow them out and give all our bench good PT minutes because we are going to need all of those guys in March. I'd like to see a score of 89 - 52.

Self's perfect game would be about him teaching defense. And afterwards, he could let his guys know... "see... we don't shoot well and we still win!"

My after-game comments would be... "see... we focus on our strengths and even our weaknesses go away because our energy level goes up everywhere. We had bad moments but we didn't let one side of the ball negatively impact the other side. And we carried good energy from one side of the ball over to the other side."

You all were right, Cliff is a starter. • Feb 11, 2015 07:23 PM

@wrwlumpy

I think Self and I have a different philosophy in the way we look at basketball.

It is clear to everyone that "Self ball" really is about just playing tough defense. If you play tough defense, you will win almost every game. He's right. This is his philosophy. He sees himself as a teacher of his philosophy. And it has worked pretty well, at least for B12 conference play!

I believe I think a bit more like NBA coaches. They think strictly by opportunism. They like to create mismatches and play towards the percentages. They adopt their team identity to the strengths of their players. That is playing "opportunistic basketball."

I would go 100% with Self ball if he was playing in an opportunity like Coach Pop has in SA.... a team he can build over many years and hold on to his players, often for decades. That allows him all the time he needs to teach strict philosophy, and to forge a winning team strictly out of philosophy.

If Self could lock down this current team to a decade of ball, he would get his hi/lo worked out and get some efficiency out of these guys. But he doesn't have that option. He doesn't have the right players that can quickly embrace his style. This is a situation where he needs to play towards "opportunistic basketball" and play to his strengths.

The season will be over before we know it. We already have played 2/3s (or so) of the season. We aren't going to have colossal changes in style. It says plenty that we have had to go this long in the year without a team identity! Why is that? Because the team says one thing and Self says something else!

It is really time he jumped totally on board with this team and let them play out who they are. Gosh... had he come along sooner to this reality, we might still have Frankamp on this team. I have a feeling I know why he left and it had more to do than just lack of PT.

I think we can still become a very effective scoring team in the low post if we do it as a side effect from being a killer perimeter shooting team.

You all were right, Cliff is a starter. • Feb 11, 2015 06:59 PM

@wrwlumpy

The way for us to score in the low post is off a guard driving. Penetrate and feed. It's how McKay scores for ISU. Pretty effective skinny guy in the post because they just don't count on him for "back to the basket" offense.

Our guards need more motion. Either driving the ball and feeding, or moving on the perimeter to get open off of screens, or moving to create the right spacing. Make sure the ball doesn't stick, and attack. Anytime the 3pt shot is wide open we need to take it. Bull hockey that it is "fools gold" because we get 3 points compared to 2. The points are in our favor because we have to shoot a much lower percentage to equal post shots. And since our team is a good perimeter shooting team... we should take the shot ALL THE TIME when it is wide open. Including Perry!

But we also take the drive. Frank and Devonte are capable here. Sometimes Wayne and Kelly. And also Perry. Teams are putting their perimeter players out high to stop the 3. The lanes are wide open! The guys need to take those lanes sometimes and either shoot or feed.

We've never had this opportunity to this level before.... where we can truly spread a defense. I just don't get Self. This is what offensive-minded coaches DREAM about! Spread the defense and attack! He is used to sagging defenses and having uber skilled post players work through double teams to score. If you have choices on recruiting... we should build for some of both, perimeter and post. Right now we are weighted towards perimeter. So we make use of our strength, and let it help open up the post for what we can score in the post.... Cliff on slams and Perry in motion. And let's not forget Kelly scoring in the low post.

As long as we can develop offense where our perimeter guys are wide open on catch and shoots... we shouldn't worry too much about cold shooting. It is going to happen sometimes from where we play.

I think what Self is most worried about is we get easy 3pt baskets so we stop playing defense. Sound familiar? Think about the OU game. Things came too easy and we relaxed on d. Then we lost our hotness and OU quickly caught us.

I'll challenge Self on the offensive side of the ball. He is clearly not an offensive-minded coach. But on the defensive side, he knows exactly what he is talking about. He's won 10 consecutive titles and he did that mostly with defense.

You all were right, Cliff is a starter. • Feb 11, 2015 06:39 PM

@wrwlumpy

I understand it from a defensive perspective. Make easy 3s then coast on defense. Self worries about that.

It is our defense that needs to play hard all the time. We aren't always going to make the 3. We don't have to. If our defense is shutting down our competition, then we don't have to be red hot from 3 all the time.

Our post game will open up if we continue to work on the perimeter game. And we should be working on getting more offensive rebounds (and putbacks).

We are ALWAYS kind of relying on guys hitting shots, wherever they take place on the floor.

3s give us an extra point. I'd rather hit 10 of 40 from 3 than hit 10 of 40 from the post... any day of the week!

I'm not discounting that we should get more post baskets. That first half last night was horrible for us in the low post. Just let it come naturally by playing towards our strength. If the perimeter is our strength... play towards it and let our post play come more gradual and organic.

It truly is about thinking "inwards out" or "outwards in."

What is wrong with being a perimeter driven team? We've had lots of post driven teams that were a dud in March.

Going cold is going cold... that can happen and we can lose any game from anywhere on the floor. But why wouldn't we play towards our strength?

You all were right, Cliff is a starter. • Feb 11, 2015 06:01 PM

Self needs to can the term "fools gold."

Treating the 3-pt shot like it's just rolling the dice puts a negative tint on what they are, and doesn't help our cause.

Just consider them to be extended midrange shots that give us an extra point.

Is it possible we can have an off night from 3? Sure it is. Is it also possible we can have an off night in the low post? Not only is the answer "yes" we've already proven that to be true.

The road to success is often taking the path of least resistance, and in this case, with such a young team, we need all the help we can get.

Whether Self wants it to be the identity of this team or not... the identity moving forward is "perimeter shooting team." He can't force us into being a low post team. Every one of us in here knows that. He can't even force us to get a higher FG% from low post. At least, not in the typical Self hi/lo "back to the basket" method. Pursuing that as an identity to this team is definitely not taking the path of least resistance. This is where Self separates himself from NBA coaches (and the Mayor). He does put himself in the style of Coach Pop... but there is one difference.... Coach Pop is surrounded by veteran NBA talent. Guys who will be the first to admit that they had to buy in to his system DECADES ago!

This team has their best shot moving forward if we do a few things now:

  1. Define our identity. Our identity relates to the skills we have. It appears we are a "perimeter shooting team."

  2. Embrace our identity. Build structure around who we are. Build offense to maximize our effectiveness from the perimeter. Sometimes that even means scoring inside! The more structure we build around a perimeter game, the better chance we have of opening up shooters for the long ball. When our guys are open from 3, we have our best chance of finding success with the long ball.

  3. Develop leadership. My guess is we need Frank to step up a bit more in this role. Key is communication. This is stuff to be determined in a team meeting, preferably only with the players and no coaches. Frank is an alpha-dog in other areas, like scoring... it's time he put his alpha-dog skills into keeping his troops in line.

  4. Focus on energy. We need to focus on bringing high levels of consistent energy for 40 minutes in every game.

These are 4 simplified goals to strive for. If we KISS (Keep It Simple, Stupid) we can achieve this and be the best team moving forward and peak at the end. We shouldn't focus too hard on the little things. Focus on the big prize and the little things will follow.

This team has mega potential if we get away from some of the flavors of traditional "Self ball" and just play to our strengths!

Wayne Selden Appreciation Thread. • Feb 11, 2015 04:51 PM

@REHawk

"but his occasional drive to pass seems to be on the road upward."

In many ways, Wayne's drives remind me of Wig's drives. They look out of control because they are forced. Both of these guys are expected to drive. Neither really found success at it as a Jayhawk.

It is sort of the opposite effect of how Self used to expect our guys to only take the 3-shot at the very end of the shot clock after 34 seconds of trying to feed the post.

The way to get these guys to really cut loose on offense is to set them free! That doesn't mean Self lets them do whatever they want. It just means setting an offense that has many many great possibilities to score, and then support the guys in playing to their strengths. No early hooks to the bench. Let them play through some stuff and support them.

Our strengths are:

Perimeter shooting

Midrange for some players

Drive and feed (and sometimes drive and score)

Post scoring in motion (Perry and Jamari)

Slam dunking (Cliff and some others)

We should easily be able to formulate enough offense around these strengths.

Enough of the traditional philosophies and teaching. It's time these guys play to their strengths. It's time these guys teach Self who they are. It's time these guys establish an identity not so much as a "Bill Self team" but as a team of who they are.

These guys have some great chemistry potential. It is clear that they are personally very close and like family to each other.

We witnessed just a bit of what they can do midway through the second half last night. It wasn't just the fact that they were nailing the long ball. They were able to break the will of TT's defense. We were nailing the long ball because our guys were wide friggin' open! Nothing looked forced. They had moments of pure flow!

We play in the right mode and maybe even Wayne can drive the ball sometimes and be effective!

Glass Half Full or Half Empty • Feb 11, 2015 04:33 PM

I think we all can use more of this. More about how we focus our fan energy.

Right after a stingy loss (like at OSU) it is easy to go negative.

Last night's performance should help us balance out. So maybe now we can look again at where we are.

Good start, @DCHawker !

Here is my 2 cents....

Glass Half Empty:

Youth - This team is young. The problem is we see them execute for a game or for a half and we quickly forget how young this team is. Our "veterans" are three juniors, Perry, Jamari and Hunter. The only guy we really count on (especially for offense) is Perry. Now look at everyone else. It seems like Wayne should be considered an elder, but he still is only a sophomore. Players tend to grow up quite a bit during a 4-year commitment. Wayne, Brannen, Frank and Landen... those guys may not still be called "green wood", but they are still soaking in sap.

Leadership - It takes several qualities in a player to make a good leader. Typically... we are talking about experience, communication ability, confidence, swagger, talent, hustle, basketball IQ, and last, he must have a following! This team doesn't really count on one guy to lead. That doesn't seem to matter sometimes... but other times, we could sure use one guy to step up and kick the troops back in line. Usually it comes from the PG. Frank doesn't back down from anyone. But does he communicate to everyone? Does he kick players to get them going? Does he see enough of what is happening in a game to try to take control, like with the tempo? Frank has a lot on his plate. He came to Kansas as a volume scorer, not a PG. He has done a great job in transferring his ability to a new position. But to lead the team, he'll need to make a bigger commitment to fulfill that role. Is he up for it? Guess we better ask Frank.

Post Play - We've never had a Self team with so little effectiveness in the low post. Self mentioned it again in his post game interview. We need to count on our fair share of post points. An easy way to work on post baskets is to get more offensive rebounds. Simply put... we are not a good offensive rebounding team. Case in point last night. We out-rebounded TT but only got half the offensive rebounds they had. There is an easy place to pick up some easy baskets. Wow... consider if we had this kind of perimeter shooting with players like TRob and the twins in the post? Remember all those sagging defenses back then?

Glass Half Full:

Youth - There is a positive to youth. This is a team void of baggage. For example, our young perimeter players aren't carrying the "disfunctional guard torch" any longer. That ended with Naa. Another advantage about their youth, we don't know that they will choke under pressure. Knowledge doesn't always help the situation. If all these guys were juniors and seniors, and had sat on the bench their first few years, soaking up the knowledge, we don't know that they would succeed. Then they carry more of a burden... expectations gone over board. Perry seems to fit in that scenario sometimes. These guys do have the possibility that they can just play unhindered basketball.

Timing Their Peak - How many times have we experienced a Bill Self team that peaks too early? It is important to peak at the end. Look at our possibilities to do that this year! Look at our players individually, and where their performance timeline may be: Wayne, seems to be coming on, especially with his shot. Might that trigger his game all around? We know he is capable of playing better defense and snagging more rebounds, even blocking shots. Brannen, he doesn't need to shoot a higher percentage, we just need to find more ways to get him the ball. But his defense and rebounding are clearly improving. He just needs enough PT. Kelly, we don't even know what he is capable of bringing! It was great to see him score a few buckets on the road in this game, might he eventually become a true "road warrior?" Cliff... it is clear that he will get more PT moving forward now. He really doesn't have to provide so much to make a huge impact because we weren't getting enough from Jamari. It was great seeing him swat some shots and effect other shots. He will surely pick up some low post offense soon. Perry... might he come on late in the season? Devonte will surely help out in key situations. Landen offers a post player who knows how to set in the low post.

Identity - This team has won a lot of ball games and they've done it largely without having an identity. It looks like their identity (moving forward) is to be the best perimeter shooting team in the nation! Self can call it "fools gold" but we wouldn't be near the top of our conference without it. Can we count on it? To some degree, yes! What we have to do is protect our interests. What we can't count on is hitting heavily contested shots. We need to develop more offense that continues to spread the defense and open up the long ball. Are any of you really concerned about Brannen's ability to nail the 3, especially if he is wide open? Moving forward, in March, we will face some teams with very good perimeter defense. They will scout us and they will come at us with the goal to contest the 3 ball. We can counter by developing some working post offense. That will help. But what we really need to do is drive the ball! Remember "drive and feed?" Frank and Devonte should be our guys to drive most. Even Perry is a capable option to drive. I'm really not concerned with any "back to the basket" play from here on out. That simply isn't our style, and we are wasting our time to work on it. Enough with the teaching philosophy, it's time to coach a strategy to win each game ahead of us. The way to do that, and have instant success, is to develop offense around the long ball. Get our guards to drive some, and otherwise, get good spacing and crisp passing. Some of our guys need to run through off-ball screens. Motion in our offense is the answer. If we do this right, no team in the country can beat us. No one. Kentucky? No! Think "turbocharged Princeton!" Adopt a bit more from the Mayor's playbook. Imagine what that guy would do with the group of shooters we have?

"I do believe that Traylor brings more energy and also believe the he is able to step away from the basket and on occasion drive to the basket or take the short to mid range jumper like he did against Baylor, where Cliff normally plays with 5 feet of the basket and when he steps outside he is slow getting back and leaves the door open for back cuts. Just my opinion."

I think you hit on something.

Traylor does bring a chance that he might drive the ball. Unfortunately, his mid range game doesn't seem to be building positive steam.

But playing Traylor gives Self the possibility to play his current offensive set. Which is to bring Traylor around the FT line and further out for ball screens.

Cliff is still too rough. He is a beast, but best left in the very low post, just a few feet from the goal.

By putting Traylor in this area, it also leaves lots of other possibilities for Perry. Perry has been playing more like a 3 lately. He goes high for ball screens and is constantly using a pick and pop or pick and roll. He also sometimes comes to the top of the key for his trey. And sometimes he slashes.

I don't really agree with Self's current offense. It has one big, weakness flaw. Traylor can't seem to hit the mid range. Teams leave it wide open for him and I bet his % in that area is around 25%. For that reason, the guy guarding BamBam can sag in the post or also look to help others out.

I would prefer playing guys where they present a bigger threat. BamBam's only threat to score is on a slash move where he is in motion when he scores. Kind of an extended layup. We can run plays to make that happen more, but we can't bog down our offense by keeping BamBam posted in the middle of everything and allowing his man to roam free. This has been a real detriment to Perry's inside scoring, because it guarantees he has to do it over double teams.

If we are going to clog the middle... I'd rather have it be with Cliff in the low post. At least he poses a real threat. If Perry is slashing in the post with the ball and gets double teamed, he simply dishes it off to Cliff for the easy slam.

We do really need to work more offense with Perry. I know he can fade in and out of games. But no one on this team has more scoring range than Perry. He can now effectively hit the 3 from the top of the key, and he can score very well in motion and in mid range. We aren't utilizing him well enough. I think if we design the right offense, he becomes deadly. And when he gets rolling... he stays engaged with the game. More chances he fights hard for rebounds and defends better. But when Perry disappears from scoring, he typically disappears in the game all together.

Since Cliff is so rough on offense... he should be limited to playing right at the basket, and off to both sides along the baseline. It should take little time to teach him how to finish 8 feet away along the baseline. Those finishes typically require strength, and he has plenty of that. And he should always get his fair share of offensive rebounds.

If Cliff wants to play on more areas of the court, he'll have to dedicate himself into extra gym time to build his toolbox. He better be doing that anyways, or he'll never see a NBA court!

This Is Horrifying • Feb 10, 2015 04:55 PM

I think Cliff was going to stay another year (or so) unless he was predicted to be a top 3-5 pick. That just isn't going to happen this year.

If he leaves for the NBA this summer he will have completely toasted his NBA career chances. He is no where near ready to play in the league. Not even close. Just compare him to TRob... TRob has him beat in all areas of the game, and he really has to fight to stick with a club. Players get a relatively short period of time to prove themselves "NBA worthy" and after that, even if they improve, the chances are slim that they make it. Teams look for guys right out of school.

I remember Cliff already talking about staying before he ever came to Lawrence. He knows he isn't ready.

Self may be doing Cliff a favor by keeping down his minutes because if he was putting up big numbers, he would be on the media watch list and would be getting over-hyped.

None of that changes the fact that he only really has a slam dunk for a shot. He is perhaps more raw than TRob in his first year. At least TRob had the motor to finish other scoring and it didn't have to be a dunk.

BTW: I have absolutely no current connections with anyone relating to this program. All I have is my opinions, and as such, they should be taken only as a fan's opinion.

Is it possible that we drop 3 more games... OU, ISU and WVU just drop 1 more game, and OSU and Baylor win out?

Ha... let's see... Kansas wins #11 and shares it with 5 other teams!

But seriously....

It looks like winning the B12 this year will mean no more than 4 losses.

We can lose 2 more games and still win #11... either single-handed or in a tie.

What are the chances one of OU, ISU and WVU wins out?

WVU - I find it very unlikely WVU wins out because they still have to come to AFH, and they will do that after they thrash us in Morgantown. This may end up being our most amped-up game in AFH this year. Even if they did beat us at home... they also need to win in other tough away games... let's see.... ISU, OSU and Baylor.

ISU - They have a tough schedule ahead.... road games with OSU, UT, KSU and TCU. And there could be an upset at home... facing WVU, Baylor and OU. I think OU really has their number.

OU - Has the easiest path to going undefeated from here on out. And they have won 5 in a row! Their path is away games to KSU, TT and ISU. Home games are UT, TCU and Kansas. Except for their one tough road game ahead at ISU, OU has a very possible win out scenario. And I feel they are capable of beating ISU away, if things go right. They match up pretty well against the Clones.

I don't see us winning in Norman or at West Virginia. Those are our 2 almost certain losses. Lets say we survive tonight at TT... (we better or we are toast!). We have away games at WVU, KSU and OU. We have home games with Baylor, TCU, UT and WVU.

If we play like a bunch of kiddy freshmen moving forward, there is no way we win #11. These guys are going to have to step up now or they will go down in history as the team that blew it for Self and Kansas, concerning the consecutive conference titles streak. We are closing in on Wooden quickly... but these guys are going to have to step up and become men.

What's a "Good Game" ? • Feb 10, 2015 04:05 PM

I've become so skiddish and superstitious with this team I've come to dread having a lead most of the game... definitely in the first half.

With this team I prefer we are down at half by around 6 to 8. Just a few baskets away from a victory, and make our guys scratch and claw for it in the final moments.

This team definitely lets off the gas when we have any kind of margin, so best to not desire one.

This is quickly becoming the identity of this team. I think if I was an opposing team and scouted us properly, I'd tell my guys to come out and play soft for the first 10 minutes and let Kansas build a lead.

Imagine playing us and being down by 15 at half, knowing your guys were holding back? Imagine what would happen the second half?

We have a young team, full of kids. They don't have it in them yet to put their foot on anyone else's throat. They would consider it impolite.

Watch anyone in their first street fight. They may hit someone first and knock the other guy down. Then they stop. Then the other guy gets off the ground with a heck of a lot of adrenaline. Then the novice gets his butt kicked. How many of you have seen that play out before? But the next time you can bet that if that guy gets the advantage he finishes off the guy he's fighting.

The OSU game was really the first game we just handed over to someone because we had them down and backed off their throat. We didn't really have ISU in this position. And the Kentucky and Temple losses... well... I'm not going to go there!

The OSU game definitely had a major lesson in it for letting up. The close call with OU at home just didn't emphasize the point because we were lucky enough to hold on to the victory.

Live and learn, boys. Now put your knowledge to work!

@icthawkfan316

I've read your post a couple of times now.... and it still makes a lot more sense than my comments on Wayne!

I based my Wayne comments on a couple of premises. First... that no matter what, Self is going to start Wayne. It is part of that thing I mentioned about Self being equal teacher to coach. Starting Wayne is his lesson that defense decides minutes. Except... Wayne hasn't been holding his end up on defense any more than Brannen does. And Brannen has started getting more rebounds, something we severely need. Second... I've had it in my head that Wayne thinks too much while playing, similar to what EJ did. I thought it really hurt Wayne this year when Self talked about playing him in every position except the 5. I've been thinking that Wayne (more than any other player) needs to feel security by knowing exactly what his role needs to be, and in simple terms. I've sort of let myself get drawn into this, and since I felt like Self is going to play him big minutes no matter what, I became an enabler in Wayne's weakness.

Your outlook on him is more realistic to identifying Wayne properly and what we need to do going forward.

In a way, my twist on it shows how off a team can get because of just one player. Wayne can't be given any free passes and must be held accountable just like everyone else.

You really won me over with this:

"A team meeting would be a good thing at this point. But rather than saying "Frank, we're counting on you to lead us" I would much rather the other key members of this team be held accountable for stepping back. It's up to all of them to hold each other accountable for this and make sure it doesn't continue to happen."

I totally agree with your statement here. It can't all be dropped on Frank's lap. Yes, Frank needs to do his share, but so does everyone else.

So I'll add to this..... and the team needs to throw Frank the keys along with giving Frank the right (and need) to hold all of them accountable, including Wayne, and of course, Perry! In fact, all of these guys need to stay on each other... keeping the energy high along with the accountability!

is it reality? • Feb 09, 2015 05:01 PM

It really is insane to run this much youth and expect to win.

is it reality? • Feb 09, 2015 04:59 PM

@jayballer54

I think it is the way we lose this year that is causing alarm. Look at games like UK and Temple. We didn't show up... period. And we didn't show up the second half at OSU. In Ames... Self couldn't get his guys to run offense or get back on defense. Watching the ISU run outs over and over again. We aren't used to that as fans!

Yes... we are spoiled. Not only on quality basketball, but at least a certain level of execution and hustle.

What we aren't used to is having a team with this much youth. Last year and this year are exceptions. It isn't all about OADs. This stems back to two years ago, when we lost so many players in one year. That created a lopsided effect. Self suddenly had to deal with having to play extreme youth. This is also an adjustment for him. He is used to benching freshman for a couple of years.

Last year's youth was masked by Wigs and JoJo. They not only captivated crowds and media.... they were instrumental in helping us win another league championship in a year we had little experience. That was huge! So those guys are gone, and we are still very very young, but now we can't mask our youth any longer with uber talent.

Fans in here are knowledgeable. They know how big these games are, especially on the road and when you had an opportunity like we had in Stillwater. Up 11 at half and their star sick with the flu. We all know certain road games are tough wins, and we know that is the secret sauce for Self and crew and the streak. Everyone else is thinking... "the road to the title goes through Lawrence..." hogwash! The road to the title goes through all our opponents' home courts. We win road games. That is why we win the B12. Other teams can't stop us from winning some in their gyms and they haven't figured out how to win enough road games.

We know this is a young team so we really want the opportunities like we had in Stillwater to go our way... because it will help us hold on to win #11.

It is very very unlikely we win out from here. We all know it. I've already counted our away at WVU as a loss long ago. Winning at OU will be tough and improbable. Even winning at KSU may not be the cakewalk we all think it should be.

Heck.... there is no guarantee tomorrow at TT! I have us as a 50/50!

"Frank is our leader"

Frank is our leader because all other players on this team took a step back and left Frank in front.

Frank is a bulldog that just doesn't quit. He needs to take charge more and be vocal and huddle the guys. That's what team leaders do. Coming out flat in a half is more the responsibility of the team leader instead of the coach. The leader is on the floor, as things are happening. He needs to communicate, even more when on the road. Control the game. Control the tempo. Settle his guys down. Show who is boss!

I don't think this team has had that conversation yet... where they all share their feelings and get behind one guy to lead. This really makes a big difference. This is part of what past Jayhawks teams have done where they really go into overdrive late in the season.

We aren't maximizing our talent and potential. We are leaving big chunks of our game in the locker room. We are missing on one or two cylinders. IMHO, this is a leadership issue. I'm not blasting Frank for this. It isn't his fault. This is a communication issue with the team and they need to formalize the structure.

I have all the faith that Frank can become a real leader. He better do it now, because next year Devonte is wanting his job! That kid is dying to lead! I see it in his DNA... and there aren't many guys like him in college basketball. I see Devonte leading us to a National Championship someday!

This Is Horrifying • Feb 09, 2015 04:26 PM

@JhawkAlum

"We need to keep him in there and let him work through it."

Absolutely!

And here is a completely different consideration.

I mentioned Cliff not forming his identity yet... what about the team? Our team still lacks identity. We need Cliff out there as part of the team to help form identity. If we change this later it just gets tougher and tougher.

Starting isn't even good for BamBam. He has his identity... as "the energy guy." That isn't a role for a starter. That is a role of the 6th man.

Look how the 6th man role has worked for Brannen. I'm definitely on board for Brannen getting more minutes. But I like how he comes off the bench for those minutes. He's a spark plug for this team. BamBam needs that same role. Right now he is carrying the starting burden on his shoulders. He could do better by starting the game on the sidelines. Watch things and know he will go in to provide energy.

Having guys figure out their best role is how teams find identity!
