Anyone else remember this many transfers on our team at once. We have Newman, Coleby, Cunliffe, Whitman and the Lawson brothers. Is this trouble to have half of our team filled up with transfers? Guess will know a lot more in a year or two.

And Moore.

Transfers in: Coleby, Whitman, D. Lawson, K. Lawson, Newman, Cunliffe, Moore

Transfers out: Bragg, Maxwell

Wow.

Hameir Wright said he's still weighing a move back to 2017, but the plan right now is to take a prep year. Kansas and Michigan State are making a push. Miami, Syracuse, Villanova, Maryland, UCLA.

Is he a real possibility in 2017 with Whitman?

Paul Pierce • May 03, 2017 05:24 PM

You are correct coaching is a large part of the problem. But it's not like it's a one loss crap-shot tournament in the NBA.

While the efficiency is similar the use rate is not. And yes McNamera (sp?) killed KU.

KUs Greatest Coach??? • May 03, 2017 03:44 PM

@JayHawkFanToo Nice.

Owens/ Hamilton and Naismith/Harp were toss ups in all honesty. I knew putting Naismith over anyone would be a smidge controversial. I was hoping to inspire someone (such as you) to write up something positve on the coaches and hopefully something on the older less known coaches.

Diallo sucked hind tit. He was lost and way behind. Raw with a late start. He needed 2-3 years in the system to be a + for KU.

Alexander was coming on strong late and would have been a big factor for KU in the NCAA tournament had he been allowed to play. His roll was expanding as the season went on. If allowed a second year Alexander would've been a beast! Diallo who knows?

I was hoping a healthy Coleby, in his third season in the system, would have a breakout year. I may have been too optimistic, it's possible last season was his peak. If so Whitman could be an upgrade assuming he can fit into the system right away. The Italy trip will help.

@Kcmatt7 It is if you had to. But this is the teams problem not the Lawson's, so I doubt that's the sacrafice that will made.

@BShark That's a good point!

I literally lol'd

@KCmatt7 nope Lawson got a $20,000 raise in new role to $120K, so I don't believe he will be paying their way anytime soon. Esp. Since his job is now in jeopardy without the security of having his boys there.

Keelon Lawson, the father of Tigers sophomore forwards Dedric and K.J. Lawson, will make $120,000 in base salary under Smith in his new role as director of player development. That's $20,000 more than he made as an assistant coach the last two seasons under Pastner.

Memphis recently released the salaries of Smith's assistant coaching staff to The CA in response to an open records request.

Assistants coaches Alvin "Pooh" Williamson will make $240,000; Joe Esposito will make $235,000; and Saul Smith will make $180,000 this season.

@JayHawkFanToo Good stuff! He looks like he's enjoying himself!

The drummer for Kiss is another hard working drummer. I'm not a huge Kiss fan, but when he's in a metal cage 30 ft in the air drumming as the cage spins him in circle upside down...wow. Quite the show. It'd be very difficult to maintain concentration!

@mayjay he has a low release point that bothers me. But it is a quick release which will help. He seems like a decent pickup. Best porn stache on the team since TJ Whatley!

I believe he said he made good money and that it wasn't an issue, but Keelon Lawson's salary was around $120K. At that salary you aren't turning down a scholarship for you son/sons when they definitely could have one elsewhere.

Italy trippin' • May 02, 2017 05:45 PM

@Crimsonorblue22 Shouldn't be an issue then. Already got guys in boots :face_palm: A high ankle sprain is similar to a broken bone in terms of healing length as I recall. Seems like it's caused by the bones slipping. Ouch. Glad it's the off season.

Italy trippin' • May 02, 2017 04:54 PM

Does anyone know how long a bad high ankle sprain takes to heal? Cunliffe only has a few weeks to heal up before the Italy trip. It would be good for him to get in early reps with the team since he will be missing the first semester of play.

svi invited to combine • May 02, 2017 04:39 PM

What kills me is, if Devonte with increased effort, can elevate his game to remove the bad games...why couldn't he do it a a Jr.? If he had, Frank's last game would've been a w. It seems very difficult to get enough players to peak in the same season to win it all.

@brooksmd Good stuff. Some of those old albums make cool wall hangings when framed. There are a few of considerable value to collectors as well. Not too mention some still feel the (non-digital) sound of a record is best (warmer). Hope you find a good home for them!

Larry Bird • May 02, 2017 02:59 PM

@jaybate-1.0 Re-reading that first part of your post it comes back to the ages old adage: Offense wins games. Defense wins championships.

Frank an NBA All star? • May 02, 2017 02:18 PM

Another first for Frank? First Naismith player of the year to not get drafted in the first round?

@mayjay my folks just threw away a couple hundred records. Beatles, Aerosmith, Simon and Garfunkle, Stones, etc. They got water damaged  Luckily they gave the white album to my uncle before the rest were damaged so he didn't have to jump off a bridge (He's a huge Beatles fan).

@Blown Lee's three was going in...

Paul Pierce • May 02, 2017 02:13 PM

It always befuddled me as to how Paul only won one ring with Garnett and Allen as teammates.

Has Coleby graduated? If not he'd be sacrificing his last year of eligibility to transfer again.

KUs Greatest Coach??? • May 02, 2017 01:34 PM

@Fightsongwriter Thomas Edison is probably the greatest inventor. (If you believe Franklin stole a ton of his ideas while running the patent office) Then there's Leonardo...This is a much harder list to make.

I honestly think any coach that couldn't win the NCAA tournament with Chamberlain gets docked big time. Also a coach that only made he Tournament once without Chamberlain can't be too great inspite of the reduced field.

Without Naismith there would be no coaches. Ergo he is a much more meaningful coach than Harp. Greatness comes in many forms.

What defines greatness? Only wins? I feel I have undervalued Naismith on "greatness" by weighing his on court results so heavily for him to land so low on the list.

You can change my mind though. What reasons make you think Harp was greater than Naismith? You've stated it twice, enlighten me as to the reasons for your convictions!

KUs Greatest Coach??? • May 02, 2017 03:10 AM

@JayHawkFanToo yes, slip of tongue/type.

KUs Greatest Coach??? • May 02, 2017 02:42 AM

@Fightsongwriter Naismith is the only coach with a sub .500 record, but he gets major points for inventing the game! Outside of that he's the least accomplished of the coaches. However, Naismith is the most famous of KUs past coaches for what it's worth.

KUs Greatest Coach??? • May 01, 2017 04:30 PM

@approxinfinity It's hard to say for sure, but I'm willing to bet Dr. Allen would've adapted with the times and would be even better today than he was then.

I don't know a whole lot about Dr. Forrest "Phog" Allen, but everything I read is amazing. Practicing medicine while coaching 2 college basketball teams! No one has anything but nice things to say about him.

I feel even though the court is named after him that he is under appreciated due to a lack of education. (I include myself in that statement and hope to continue to learn more about the man)

Bill is still writing his legacy. There is one more spot for him to overcome in my book. I think he has the potiental to lead KU to the higher heights than ever before.

KUs Greatest Coach??? • May 01, 2017 01:40 PM

Based upon accomplishments up to this point I'd have to rank the former KU coaches:

  1. Forrest Allen - 2 Helms 1 NCAA championship coached KU and Baker then KU and Haskell at the same time also coached the football one season to a winning record as well.
  2. Bill Self - 1 NCAA championship 13 straight Big 12 championships
  3. Roy Williams 3 final fours elevated KU to blue-blood level.
  4. Larry Brown 1 NCAA championship. left the team on probation.
  5. W. O Hamilton Won the Missouri Valley his first 5 years of coaching including 3 one loss seasons, had a near .500 record his final 5 years.
  6. Ted Owens Final Fours in '71 and '74 made the NCAA tournament 7 of his 19 years coaching.
  7. James Naismith famously said (paraphrasing) you can't coach basketball
  8. Dick Harp 2 NCAA tournament appearances in 8 seasons. Couldn't win it all with Chamberlain.
Mason and Graham vs Mario and Russ • Apr 30, 2017 11:25 PM

@jaybate-1.0 You make the '08 team sound way better than any team recently. You're not wrong. That's why I've been so impressed with the job Bill has done masking defeciencies recently. Since the Morri left KU hasn't fielded a complete team.

IF Preston and Udoka live up to their potiental AND Newman slips in seemlessly then this upcoming season will be the most complete team we've seen in quite some time. However, I'm having a hard time not viewing it as a depleted version of this years team with Frank and Josh gone. Malik and Billy have freakin' huge shoes to fill.

Mason and Graham vs Mario and Russ • Apr 30, 2017 09:19 PM

Mario 2.5 steals per game. Russel 2.0 steals per game.
Devonte and Mason 2.8 per game combined.

I don't remember nearly as many blow-bys, but that could be because their was actually a post presence in '08 to clean it up.

I like both tandems, but only one brought home a NC. So the decision is pretty easy for me as to which was better for KU. Head to head is a harder call. Mario and Frank both have the heart of champions. I'd take Russel over Devonte at this point just due to the defensive synergy he had with Mario. Those guys wreaked havoc and created their own good fortune.

@JayHawkFanToo Ok. I agree. The double negative threw me.

I cannot think of even one scenario where Coach Roy Wlliams is not huge positive for KU.

I'm confused do you think Roy was huge for KU in every way, or did you mean Roy was never good for KU?

Either way Roy left KU in much better shape than he inherited it (on probation). And Larry left it in better shape than he inherited it in (2 final fours in the 70s is all for Owens). And Bill has it humming along the best yet, but he is still improving.

Roy has undoubtably done a fantastic job at UNC, better than he did at KU, but Bill is doing a better job at KU than Roy ever could hope to do.

No sour grapes here. Roy was good for KU, but it's also been good for KU that he left to make way for Bill. I feel when Roy went "home" to Chapel Hill he had a resurgence of energy as well as a much easier time recruiting. Roy doesn't win 3 NC at KU in the same time frame.

NFL Draft • Apr 30, 2017 01:28 PM

I'd say if a man doesn't want a video of himself punching a woman (or anyone) to be played on TV, then don't punch anyone. It's pretty darn simple.

Doesn't Wooden hold that record?

Larry Bird • Apr 30, 2017 12:55 PM

@jaybate-1.0 I'd take Mario and RusRob over Mason and Graham any day of the week.

Josh vs. Brandon is interesting. I don't know if KU wins without Rush's defense. No way Josh can guard like that, but Josh is better in other aspects. Those two swapped could possibly work, but Arthur did some of the things that Josh does also. So I'd say it's a good thing Rush was on the '08 team and not Josh.

On the inverse I think Josh did too many things for this past years team to be replaced by Brandon. However, if Kansas had a player similar t0 Arthur at the 4 and Rush would've been great for last years squad. They really needed a shut down defender on the perimeter, but had nothing at the 4 forcing Josh to play a position I don't think Rush could with his weaker frame.

An example of how player loss of value insurance policies work.

I believe KU footed the bill on the insurance for Embiid and Wiggins. I never heard whether Josh or any other high profile player had a policy as well.

I've got one of those cards also. Cool set. How could a Jayhawk collector pass? http://www.ebay.com/itm/311488985785?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT ↗

NFL Draft • Apr 29, 2017 01:57 PM

@mayjay Glad he doesn't play for my team.

Where was DeShawn Stevenson from? Roy signed him, but he went pro instead.

Nevermind. Fresno.

Roy didn't think he measured up to daddy Dean so he was scared to recruit there. He was certain UNC or Duke or Kentucky could sweep in and steal any recruit he had put time in on. With the biggest names it seems to be pretty true, but it hasn't been impossible for Bill to pull those recruits. It's probably a big reason you don't see Bill close out on a high percentage of those big time east coast recruits. However the west coast was wide open for Roy and with Oregon and UCLA's resurgence Bill may have to work harder still.

I'm struggling to find a recruit of Roys from east of the Mississippi off the top of my head

Calvin Rayford - Wisconsin is as far east as I could come up with. Well done @Big-Clyde52

Oh yea, @Kcmatt7 we're done. I'm afraid I'm about to make it personal and I would like to think I can rise above this petty crap. Sorry you can't have fun talking about the NBA with someone who disagrees with you.

@Kcmatt7 Are you an NBA player? If so I appologize for insulting you. Otherwise we were having a conversation about the NBA and the current pussification of the league. Who is better LBJ or Jordan? I'm not sure why my questioning the work ethic of the current NBA vs the earlier NBA justifies your comments about my work ethic. You know little to nothing about me, but there are books, movies, video documentary etc. about the NBA players and their lifestyle.

By questioning my work ethic and ability to perform at work it is a very personal attack.

@justanotherfan The training is so much better now you'd think they'd be able to overcome this. The athletes only have to perform for 1 hour in a day. The balance is preparation and resting.

It does make me wonder how better Jordan or Magic would be in today's game.
