KU vs WSU - Match Ups • Mar 21, 2015 03:31 PM

Marshall and his crew may not have a LOT of March experience but it is fresh in the minds of some players who danced to the final four last year. That can go a LONG way. JMHO.

If we play like we did yesterday it will be fun to watch. Just give me two good halves again. RCJH.

Final Four two years ago for wichita. Kentucky bounced them early last year after going undefeated in the regular season.

Come to think of it why wasn't wichita given the same opportunity that UK was last year? I'm sure WSU would like another shot at UK.

@HighEliteMajor Thanks. I should probably change it, but I too like it.

Sandman was a bear. So was Tyson. I liked the earlier rounds more. King hippo and piston Honda. Glass Joe was too easy though.

I feel like ISU and Baylor lost just to spite ku fans by screwing up our Brackets. I know they messed up mine.

A Juicy New Rumor About Cliff • Mar 19, 2015 01:40 PM

Well, if there's any truth to this rumor it sounds like there is a possibility that Cliff will play for KU next year. I still wouldn't count on him this season.

Selection Sunday • Mar 16, 2015 03:00 PM

@nuleafjhawk I just hope KU gets a chance to play Kentucky again. If KU beats (I'm assuming) WSU and ND, I'd consider that a good tournament outcome. I'm hoping to win it all, but reality is KU has a very difficult path to the title. ND and UK upsets would greatly help the Jayhawks.

I just want to see this years team leave it all on the court, win or lose.

Selection Sunday • Mar 16, 2015 02:05 PM

Nices comment I've ever seen from a UK fan.

"You guys do realize I am expecting 40-0 right?? Hoping someone beats Kansas. We put them down hard and they are miles from the same team and likely pissed off. March retribution can be fickle and nasty."

Hope he gets to live his biggest fear.

Self Fullfilling Prophecy • Mar 15, 2015 05:58 PM

@HighEliteMajor No it would not surprise me as most threes in Bill's system are set shots by design. You aren't going to have nearly as many set shots from 2. Too many broken plays this year have ended in rushed two point jump shots.

Self Fullfilling Prophecy • Mar 15, 2015 05:55 PM

Here's the thing about Bill Self's offense. It takes time to learn. It doesn't look pretty if even one player is out of place. Subtle shifts in player placement make a huge difference. A large reason why you don't see many kick-out threes is Greene and Oubre don't know how to move without the ball. McLemore was awesome about finding the open space.

About player management: I've seen it throughout Bill's tenure at KU; he gives the quick hook and fans howl about it. Withey sat, TRob sat, Cole sat, BUT when they played they looked pretty darn good. With unreal stats when blown up to 40 minutes per game. However Bill was using them to the teams utmost advantage and getting the absolute most out of their minutes. Given more minutes the defenses adjust and flaws are exploited (i.e. Cliff Alexander as a starter). I say Bill is masterfully using the players he has and is getting the most wins out of them possible.

Unfortuneately this year I am not overly optimistic about the tourney and would consider the sweet 16 a decent ending. I don't see this team as being able to play lock down defense for 6 games straight or being able to play 40 minutes of good ball.

I hope to be proven wrong and get to watch KU play in 6 more games.

@HighEliteMajor said:

@dylans Here's the thing ... you can have both. Have you watched Gonzaga play? Duke? Wichita St.? You obviously saw ISU. And you've seen OU. Just examples. Not perfect teams. Just examples.

No, I have a job, kids, wife and in general a life. I don't know what your schedule is like, but I'm busy. I watch KU basketball and sports center. When I was younger and had more free time on my hands I watched plenty of NCAA basketball. I may watch a handful of tourney games that KU's not in, but that's it.

I am a KU fan period. I don't give a ... about any other team.

Self Fullfilling Prophecy • Mar 15, 2015 04:29 PM

@HighEliteMajor Umm KU did hit a cold steak. It's no myth its the past several games.

I like to see KU shooting threes it keeps the D honest. I just think a strong inside game is a way to win more consistently. Unfortunately this team is weak inside, Kelly plays like a freshman and can't slash consistently, Perry is a 3/4 and needs a true 5 to play next to. Selden is not a dead eye 2, nor is he a great ball-handler. Frank has been a pleasant surprise, but not mistake free. Graham will be good, but is inconsistent. Svi plays like a really talented 17 year old.

So since KU does nothing great, it must do everyhing well. They must not just rely on one dimention of the game. They have been coached that when the three isn't falling to do something different. They have been coached to look for a higher percentage shot than a quick three early in the offense. The three will be open more often than any other shot, because it's the easiest to miss (fools gold-sure looks good).

I wish ISU would have kept jacking quick threes in the second half like they did in the first.

Self Fullfilling Prophecy • Mar 15, 2015 03:06 PM

@HighEliteMajor I see things just the opposite. I know people like to pout and cry when KU looses, since it happens more than once a year. Did you stop to think that maybe Bill was right? How many "excellent" Duke teams have been bounced in the first or second round because they depend upon the three?

The three ball is great to depend upon to create an upset. If KU was at as huge of a talent deficit as when they played UK then I say bomb away. You are going to loose 9 out of 10 playing them straight up. SO why not shoot threees and see what happens. It's like playing one armed bandits, you will cash in eventually.

So KU has hit an inevitible cold streak shooting the three ball, let's bash on Self and say he got into their heads and screwed up a team that was shooting lights out for 3/4 of the season. He clearly changed philosophies over the last 9 games and has killed the three himself. It has nothing to do with the three ball being the least reliable shot and worst way to a repeatable victory. Cold shooting nights happen and an inside game/slashing game would sure be nice to depend on and fall back on the three; not the other way around.

You know how many times I've heard KU called K-State or the Kansas Wildcats? It's sad that the announcers can't get it right, but to put up the wrong graphic... Come on! You have time to prepare for that.

I was wrong when I though Adidas has already unveiled their ugliest uniforms.

I was wrong to think that The Central University of North Texas is a good name for an all girls school.

I was wrong to think that Friends University of Central Kansas is a funny name for a christian college.

I was wrong to think that Conner Frankamp was a competitor.

I was wrong to think the KUSports.com article stating that Keegan wants Wichita's coach for KU women's basketball. I was picturing Gregg Marshall as KU's new women's coach, he meant Judy. Still didn't like Marshall though.

Borzello: East, West Rosters Unveiled ↗

McDonald's All Americans have been announced.

I don't care for the man, but respect the position. I can understand how exciting this must be for the players to meet the person who holds that office. The worst president of the US is still the president and an honor to meet.

@wissoxfan83 It's terribly frustrating. I thought I might be able to watch a few KU games while I was in Negril the last two weeks, but the games weren't on and I had no internet connection. aargh!

Sorry for highjacking the thread.

We should sell Zenger piñatas. I'd buy one, but it'd probably be full of kitty litter.

Thats a lowlight real I don't want to see, but it's already running through my head.

I'll root for the Seahawks. gag

Move out of Kansas.

Wear non-KU shirts in Wildcat land.

Get Time Warner cable and not watch KU.

Speaking of TW cable. I've noticed since I can't watch all of KU's games this year it's harder to give a crap about what's going on. The Sheahorn Z. KSU plan for being an double agent who turns off KU fans is working. I still hate KSU, but am having a harder time loving my 'Hawks since I can't see them!!! I went so far as to subscribe to the Lawrence Journal World newspaper to have something to hold. If I only knew how to get a better AD in place. One who let's the die-hard fans in the effen state watch their team.

Win at all costs and the fans cry about not looking to the future. Sit Cliff and lose tonight with an eye on the future and fans cry. It'a a good thing KU basketball coach isn't an elected position. The man has done nothing but win games at a historic rate. KU is 14-3 with a freshman and sophomore dominated line-up in what has been the hardest schedule in the nation. I'm estatic with the win loss record, but think there is much room for improvement in play. That's what has me excited, KU will be better in March and even better next year.

If Bill manages to win the conference title this year it will be quite the feat with 8 teams in a 10 team conference having been ranked in the top 25. That means 8 teams have been rated in the top 7% of all college basketball. KU will have to earn this championship!

I couldn't stop watching, I watched the whole Kentucky debacle and figured it couldn't get worse. Given I played with my iPad more than watched the game at first after half time. I also stopped yelling at the tv after half time too. It seems my in game adjustments were being ignored. How dare they!?!

Oubre Mystery: NO MYSTERY AT ALL • Dec 03, 2014 03:02 PM

I was at the first game last year. You could tell right away that Embiid was a special talent. There have only been two players I've seen play that I thought had a similiar ceiling Wiggins and Peirce.

As far as what HCBS is doing The longest active streaks in the polls Duke (140) and Kansas (108). Syracuse dropped out last week after being ranked in 80 consecutive polls.

Consistancy. Unfortunately this consistancy has elevated our expectations. I remember under the previous coach, years that being ranked uncertain. Winning a game in the tournament was a goal. Now it's win it all or cry about it. I'm quite proud of what our guys accomplish on the court. If they finish 2nd this season it'll go down as a championship in my mind, because no team is better than Kentucky. If UK looses it's a fluke or because Calipari is the worst coach in America. That kind of talent should win NBA games.

Mid range shooting • Nov 22, 2014 01:55 PM

quote from Jesse

Stat of the day: KU scored only 12 second-half points against Kentucky. During the entire 2013-14 season, only four teams scored 12 points or fewer in a second half (Louisiana-Monroe, Campbell, San Jose State, New Hampshire).

Now that's rarified air.

@jaybate-1.0 The Jayhawk towers renovations don't affect the B-Ball team. Did you see the new luxury apartments that KU is building?

RENTLESS ONSLAUGHT! • Nov 19, 2014 04:43 AM

@DanR drive into the trees and get your shot blocked seemed to be the offensive game plan.

The high low simply won't work against the length that Kentucky has.

RENTLESS ONSLAUGHT! • Nov 19, 2014 04:40 AM

Allow me to say right now, ahem. For all you "fans" who will complain about anything short of a national championship go ahead and start now. Kentucky is going to win it all. This may be best accumulation of talent in the history of ncaa basketball. Better than ucla back in the day. KU will win the b12 but it won't be easy. KU may make the final four, but has a lot of improving to do to get there. Kentucky will destroy this team in March also. As much upside as KU has Kentucky has more.

It's GAMEDAY!!! • Nov 03, 2014 06:26 PM

@globaljaybird I'd give you two thumbs up if I could. That's exactly what I've been waiting for as well! Now the speculation about the team will end and the second guessing of the coach will begin.

It's GAMEDAY!!! • Nov 03, 2014 04:39 PM

Unfortunately I don't get the game at home and will be stuck in a council meeting that starts at 7 and usually runs 2- 2 1/2 hours long. :( My plans of going to the bar to watch the game have gone down in flames unless I ditch out on my civic duty...

It's GAMEDAY!!! • Nov 03, 2014 04:22 PM

The day we've all been waiting for is finaly here. It's the first game of the season. A long off season of speculation and a little drama (two transfers) has all culminated into this first of hopefully 40 games.

Get your KU gear on! Go listen to a mildcat fan complain and smile. Let your talking come after the game as praise for a worthy foe defeated. It's time to be a class act and win with expectations to do so, but no ego. It's time to praise the other team in victory or defeat. The refs may help decide the outcome, but no fan here will complain. We are the best fans in the world. We are Jayhawks!

@JayHawkFanToo I wanted him to work out, but he couldn't hang. If the fires too hot in the kitchen get out. That's what Frankamp did.

Not enough kids are willing to sacrafice for the greater good of the team. Hopefully this means PT would be scarce next season as another stud HS student slides into the rotation.

@nuleafjhawk I think this is one of those times that it's good riddance. If he was a chemistry issue by his presence alone (not his actions) then so long the program is better off.

Naadir Tarpe, JR Giddens, And now Frankamp. They no longer rate. Anyone who would leave the team without good reason is not now nor will they ever be a Jayhawk. It's unfortunate as I thought Frankamp would be a difference maker, but if he wants to be the man he'll have to do it on a mediocre team.

Think of the time Releford put in or the walk-ons who never see the floor. Frankamp was scheduled to start the first game and average up to 25 minutes per game (according to Self). So playing times not the issue. The problem is he was never going to be the star on the team as he was his four years in highschool.

It's unfortunate as I was looking forward to watching him develop into a major contributor. I had high hopes for conner since he signed with KU and followed his HS career. My opinion may change as more details come to light, but for now good riddance.

Here is the line that bothers me: per Benton Smith Self had a starting five for Monday’s exhibition. Frankamp would’ve started. But as of Friday afternoon he hadn’t decided on the starting five versus Washburn.

"What it does, we've lost a good player. We've lost a fine young man. We've lost a very good shooter," Self said. "But we may have also gained (on) some chemistry issues, where now, I think guys will be more locked in and more able to probably figure out what their role will be, because there will definitely be anywhere between 10 and 20 or 10 and 23 whatever minutes there would be to go around amongst the other guys."

ESPN article ↗

Kansas forward Perry Ellis is one of the most complete players in college basketball this season.
Despite losing Joel Embiid and Andrew Wiggins, Kansas will once again be in the discussion for a national title. The Jayhawks have a championship pedigree and are led by Bill Self, one of the best coaches in college basketball. They also added another talented recruiting class to a strong, veteran core.

I spent time this week in Lawrence, Kansas, to check out the Jayhawks in person. After speaking with Self and watching Kansas practice, here are my biggest takeaways.

  1. Perry Ellis is a unique talent

The junior forward really understands how to play. He has great footwork and seals in the high-low offense as well as any player in the country. Ellis shoots the ball to 17 feet comfortably, and moves and reads the defense on the block to create angles. Though he’s not the vocal leader you expect at this point of his college career, he simply “does his job."

  1. Kansas is a legitimate title contender -- in time

The Jayhawks will be ready come March, but they are a work in progress at the moment. It will take time for freshmen Cliff Alexander and Kelly Oubre to reach their potential; however there is no denying their work ethic and willingness to be coached. Both work hard, and by February they will be tough to handle. Kansas has a great culture and the first-year players will benefit from that culture.

Wayne Selden

  1. Wayne Selden has his bounce and explosiveness back

When attacking the basket, he is almost impossible to stop. Selden cannot get caught up in showing everyone he is a jump shooter, but rather think “attack” first. He can shoot the ball, however few players in the country finish like him. The sophomore guard will be a lockdown defender, and has the versatility to play multiple positions this season.

  1. Oubre is an athletic freak

The former McDonald’s All-American has long arms and fast-twitch, explosive movements. He is learning what a good shot is and where his shots are coming from. Oubre plays consistently hard, runs the floor and is difficult to keep off the glass. He can play and defend both the small forward and power forward positions, which gives Kansas versatility. I expect him to be a lockdown defender early in his college career.

  1. The new backcourt has serious potential

Frank Mason and freshman Devonte Graham will end up playing together in the backcourt a significant amount, and especially during crunch time. Mason has a little Allen Iverson in him. He is tough, and can create separation for the jumper or the drive downhill. He has a better feel for the game than most realize. Graham plays with excellent pace, creates in the lane and is a solid on-ball defender. Both are tough enough to defend either guard position.

  1. Kansas has a new international sensation

Sviatoslav Mykhailiuk, a 6-foot-8 freshman shooting guard from Ukraine, is one of the most complete young players I have seen in a long time. The 17-year-old has guard skills, shoots the ball well from 3-point range and possesses a high basketball IQ. Mykhailiuk sees all five defenders off ball screens and penetration, and his international experience gives him a maturity well beyond his years. He has excellent length (which my colleague Jay Bilas will like), and with added strength will be a tough matchup. By February, it will be hard to keep him off the court.

  1. Alexander will be a beast -- but not right away

Alexander must understand how to use his body and seal the defender, but once he does, watch out. He runs the floor, has great hands and although he doesn't have great lift, he is explosive around the basket. An excellent defensive rebounder, Alexander was a better ball-screen defender than expected. A concern early will be his ability to pass out of double-teams. Coach Norm Roberts, who works with the Kansas big men, does an excellent job with the frontcourt players. There’s no doubt that by the second half of the season, Alexander will improve. His willingness to be coached and how he embraced coaching were impressive.

  1. Jamari Traylor has developed offensively

The junior forward has improved each year at Kansas, and he reminds me of a combination of former Florida big men Patric Young and Will Yeguete. He plays hard every possession, runs the floor and pursues every rebound and loose ball. Though not known as an offensive force, he’s shown signs of development. Traylor does an excellent job of sealing in the post and can drive the ball from the high post. He understands his role in the Kansas system and sets a tone for the Jayhawks.

  1. Brannen Greene has much to learn

Greene should be a major contributor for the Jayhawks this season, and every time he takes a shot you think it’s going in. But I'm not sure he makes enough winning plays. He rarely makes anyone else better, and does not look like he competes consistently. If he would buy in and give of himself to his teammates, he could be extremely valuable. After observing him for two days, it seems like he needs to earn the trust and respect of his coaching staff and teammates.

  1. Self is one of the nation’s best

This is a prior known fact, but I want to emphasize it again. Self runs a great practice and program and really relates well to his players. He demands a lot from them, but does it in such a way that they respond. Self is an excellent teacher and communicator, and he has a veteran staff that understands his system. He has a system, but will tweak it to fit his players’ strengths. Kansas plays fast and smart offensively, and is relentless defensively. Few coaches get their players to play as hard consistently as Self does.
