@globaljaybird My brother in law has served two tours in Afghanistan so I know all about praying to get someone home. It's not like he was sitting in a base either. The wars are different now as opposed to the great wars. Now you have to chose whether or not to shoot the woman or child who is shooting at you or running supplies. You have to go door to door and determine if they are a threat or just a civilian and do it before you get shot yourself. It makes the revolutionary war seem very simple. Line 'em up and shoot 'em.

My grandmother married two pilots from WWII, both of whom lived out their natural lives. One was stationed in Jamaica and loves to reminisce about the War (zero action). The other was shot down 7 times in flying fortresses. 4 times he was the only survivor. 3 times he watched everyone else die on the raft while waiting for rescue. I can't imagine the horrors he endured, but I'm proud as heck of him.

One majorly positive thing about UA is they support our troops. Hmm, troop support, my favorite (non-KU) basketball player if he accepts, and no reported child labor scandals. They may soon get my support, but unless they have something with KU on it I'm out.

@approxinfinity This is definitely an improvement! Thanks for the upgrade; I'm looking forward to figuring out all the nuances of the new site.

Tracking Sviatoslav Mykhailiuk • Aug 01, 2014 12:16 PM

I hope Svi will be able to keep up with older American ball players. It looks like he needs to work on his shot selection also. A year or two in Bill's system will help tremendously. If not he'll be another Down's and some other stud will replace him. It looks like Bill could use the scholarship next year anyway. I'd rather he panned out, but if not there's always the next big thing on the horizon.

@VailHawk six.

@approx I'm fine either way. It would stink to lose all the old posts/reputation, but they will all come back eventually. And hopefully better. However if the upgrade is anything like upgrades on a few other sites I used to frequent it's more of a downgrade :) I'm comfortable in this site, but if it can be improved go for it! It definitely would be better to do before the season starts; just give us the lowdown on how to work the new and improved site if possible.

I can't wait for basketball season!!! I'm ready for actual basketball news and less speculation. Let's see this shiny new team play already.

@nuleafjhawk True. And no one in the big 12 has made the final four (besides KU) since Texas. And that is oooold news. Few even remember Texas' final four run.

I wonder if Cliff has a mid-range game? He sure can dunk the crap out of it though. He looks a lot like TRob in his athleticism and skill set. I'm afraid he's a bit of a tweener for the League. And the million dollar question: Will he play more than one season of college ball?

@drgnslayr Thank man. It's cool to hear about your experiences. I was born in Arizona, but blessed to end up in Kansas at 3 years old and have spent the last 32 years here. Four years in Lawrence and the rest in a small town in SW Kansas. I don't really enjoy big cities; the amenities are fantastic, but as a general rule the people suck. I used to think I liked people, but as I met more a-holes I discovered I just like decent people and I know about enough. I would like to meet more interesting indiviuals such as yourself, but it's not going to happen in this neck of the woods. I am fairly outgoing, hold three jobs, one is public service and it doesn't make me like people more, one leaves me in isolation wanting more human contact, my main job puts me in front of the same good people once a week. I truly enjoy the good people I deal with not so much the others... such is life.

Thanks for sharing your experiences it's been eye opening and a fun trip. Hopefully I'll get to visit some of the places you've lived someday, but I'll probably live all my days in a small town in SW Kansas (if the water holds out, but that's another story), travel the world as much as I can afford, and will definitely die a Jayhawk.

I've always wanted to spend some time in Europe, but haven't found the spare change to make it over there yet, maybe some day... But for now seven mile beach in Negril Jamaica is calling my name it's been 5 years or so and I'm getting the itch. Bill Self VS The Rolling Stones • Jun 22, 2014 03:24 PM

@drgnslayr Look at tape of KU's 2008 team. Every time I watch those games it amazes me how quickly the ball moved around the perimeter. The ball didn't stick and I think the current team could learn as more from watching that tape as it's the offense KU runs. However, watching the Spurs may be the easier way to beat the message into their skulls.

I think this is why Bill wants three ball handlers (lead guards) in the game at once. This is how KU won the NC. Now I don't think Rush's handles were real solid, but he was capable of dishing/slashing with the best of them. The tandem of Robinson and Chalmers reeked havoc on the defensive end as well!

I also think the current bigs need to watch the way Cole Aldrich outlet passed the ball. He was looking for a streaking 'Hawk the instant he got the ball, whether he was pulling it thru the net or grabbing a rebound. Cole's outlet passes led to instant offense and kept the defense on it's heels allowing for easier defensive rebounding opportunities (since the whole defense was streaking back on D).

@drgnslayr Guarding a 7'1" guy never would've happened for me. I lacked the heighth and weight. So are you tall or strong? Good lower body strength would really help in those situations (like Black, Graves, or Charles Barkley).

I'm glad to hear at least one of your injuries has been taken care of. The nagging injuries of youth are always going to be there though. My knee has never been the same since I got clipped in football and I was just a deeep bench player who really didn't get the wear and tear of a full time player!

Keep up the posts you always have an interesting take on the game. I almost always agree with what you have to say and you generally articulate it better than I would.

Report: Embiid Broken Foot? • Jun 21, 2014 03:46 AM

@drgnslayr Sounds like you were quite the athlete in your prime! I played, but no one would confuse me for an athlete.

The most impressive thing I ever saw on a basketball court was at Robinson sports complex as a freshmen. I went to Robinson (KU student gym) and hopped into a pickup game. This guy was just raining threes and the post player I was guarding (mind you I'm 6' ) wasn't doing much so I thought I could turn the shooter into a driver. Big mistake, as I stepped forward this guy took off toward the lane, picked up the ball just inside the three point line and literally jumped over me from just inside the free-throw stripe. I told him he should really walk on to the basketball team as he was incredible, he replied I'm on the team, I'm Kenny Gregory.

I had never seen an athlete of that calibre and a few of the guys Self recruits are even more athletic! I never claimed to be a good athlete, but this just showed me that I had never played against an elite athlete before either. I've had nothing, but respect for anyone on the team since. Kenny was a freak athlete who just never got it all put together for a run in the nba. I believe he had a 42" vert. Wiggins is 3 inches taller and has 2" on his vert. Incredible!!!

Given Embiids health issues; I'm glad he declared for the draft. I wish he could've stayed healthy until after chosen top 3, but it didn't happen.

What if he had come back? If he get's hurt playing for KU it was a silly gamble and he threw away millions of dollars. If Joel gets hurt it also hurts the Jayhawks. Think about last years team; with Joel KU's a top 10 team; without barely top 25. So you grow to depend upon an athletic freak rim-protector that you can't replace. Low and behold he gets hurt and the team goes down with barely a whimper in the tournament. Why? because they came to rely upon this one uber talented freshman. He is utterly un-replaceable, but if you never had him to begin with you never develop the dependency upon him either.

Joel was by far the biggest game changer on the team and it showed most when he was gone. This is what could've happened to our Jayhawks again if he was back for '15. No Joel for '15 deep run? Joel sitting on the bench hurt in '15 early exit?

Embiid was the most exciting player to watch last year. I love me some Joel and wish him a speedy recovery, but he absolutely made the best decision for himself and KU by leaving.

Chalmers Decision • Jun 05, 2014 04:14 AM

arrogant

Well his family needed the money • May 28, 2014 04:01 AM

I've read about lottery (as in powerball) winners who complain that the money has ruined their lives and they have not a penny left in a few years. Poor financial decisions are made by people who don't earn their money. A 19 year old who is handed a huge contract by the NBA hasn't earned anything. They think they have due to the hours of practice they have put in, but it's not the same as nurturing a career to fruition. It takes the general populace many years (if ever) to amass enough money to retire. If I was handed 1 million dollars to do my job on year one I would've spent it all expecting the money to come that easy my whole career.

Lottery winners are typically poor at finances to begin with - who throws money at something with poorer odds than being struck by lightening multiple times. That being said my neighbor and father in law have both won the lotto. My neighbor spent the money on hospital bills (well spent). The other lost the house he partially paid for with his winnings and has nothing to show for it today. The difference is both kept their jobs and will have a steady income until retirement. Most NBA players didn't go into fields of studies that pay particularly well; anyone looking for an African Studies major/under-water basket weaving major to come work for them?

If a basketball player genuinely worked hard to hone his craft it stands to reason he would be successful at another craft/job as well. If he is getting by on god given talent (like most) and doesn't work as hard as say Andrew White III or Connor Frankamp they will fail at almost anything else they attempt. Not even a stock boy needs to be athletic. It wouldn't hurt in construction or even in other physical fields, but those usually require cognitive skills that jocks don't typically have to work on. Pass the athlete that can't read or the football team may loose a game and not win state, because that's looking out for the athlete (sarcasm font).

Sviatoslav Mykhailiuk To KU • May 23, 2014 02:49 PM

Svi will not start over Greene. Neither would AWIII. AWIII saw both Greene and Oubre ahead of him, and I doubt very much he knew about this news before anybody else.

But Bill did and he influences the decision making process for these kids.

I look back at the Mario, Brandon, Julian, Micah recruiting class and think this one could be better assuming Svee is no Downs. But I don't think this class will have 3 kids stick around 2-3 years, so the impact may be less. :(

@drgnslayr Patience is a virtue most are short on these days. However, look at Kentucky, if you want to talk about a stacked roster, wow. Playing time at KU will be much easier to come by for the star players than at UK.

Come on down Sick Myc! We could use another baller in Crimson and Blue. If the other players on the team are scared of competition or felt they had no idea that there would be world class competition for minutes; then leave. Wanted: competitors only.

I don't want KU to turn into a OAD factory, but I'll take all the world class players that want to compete for minutes. Some of Bill's early teams were so stacked that great players sat early in their careers. I hope KU get's back to that. Where a Brannen Greene can come in as a Jr. and light it up without all the on court growing pains. That's why I want this kid, to up the talent level and practice quality.

I hope the Wednesday timeline for a (good) decision is correct.

@HighEliteMajor

Funny misspelling Selden after a misspelling correction. :) Not sure if it's intentional or not, but funny none the less.

It seemed to me that Greene was already equal to White on offense as a Freshman. Greene and White both had fair to poor handles. Greene had concentration issues, White was a work out warrior. Greene's lateral quickness exceded White's by far, so he has more defensive potential. And the trump factor, since all other things are pretty equal, Greene has one more year of eligibility.

Andrew White to Transfer • May 09, 2014 09:21 PM

@icthawkfan316 Well stated. I feel that if Greene had Frankamps mind he would be a complete player. It seems as though Greene looses focus (passes should never bounce off of you), but is much more impressive athletically. You've got to like the frame that Greene has vs. Connors, but Connor is a baller and will earn his minutes too. I can't wait to see some seasoned shooter on this team in 2 years. Next year will be fun With a 10% chance of a NC, but the year after is when KU's best chances of a National Title are.

Yeah, one inch of rain so far this year. .40" being the "big" rain. But on the bright side the month of March was the windiest (avg. speed) on record out here, so maybe it'll calm down now. I can deal with the heat, but the 40 mph winds with 65 mph gusts wears a guy out. A couple weeks ago I had a great day when the wind only blew 30 mph. Currently it's calm and will hopefully stay that way!

Greene already was last year and Oubre looks like he's better than Greene and there's Selden too. Log Jam, but one more legit playmaker would be nice. I'm not sure Graham will be a huge improvement over Tharpe/Frankamp/Mason. I hope so, but a true stud pg with seasoning is what this team needs. Is there a Senior transfer out there?

Andrew White to Transfer • May 09, 2014 04:30 AM

So does anyone think that there's any truth to the rumours on this guy? Sviatoslav Mykhailiuk ↗ How crowded is the backcourt? Why is Bill so sure AW3 wouldn't get on the court? His offense could've been great, but no handles and below average D won't get you playing time at KU. I think he could've blossomed with more playing time, but the Man didn't and that's all I really need to know. Except is one more stud on the way? I don't want another Doyel though. I'd rather roll into next season with 2 scholarships.

When National Championships Are Won • May 09, 2014 04:11 AM

@drgnslayr Are you serious about Zoo dung? Kinda cool, what zoo are you by? I've got cow crap for days down here (SW Kansas). I tell my farmers to use manure when they can, but it's not always practical.

The best way to handle animal dung for fertilizer in town is to compost it in a pile you turn over several times throughout the year. Composted manure won't smell, but looses much of the nitrogen as it gasses off in the ammonia form. The phos is not highly soluble (so it will stay put pretty well). For field use you still need to pile the manure to age it so it's not so "hot". You don't want to burn the plants roots off.

You probably already know all this as you seem to be an avid gardener (judging by past posts). I'm just cranked up and ready for spring and my garden too.

Best of luck in your endeavors.

I don't have any clue as to the European mindset. I can't even figure out local teenagers. :) (Why would a 7 foot shot blocker go anywhere else; scared?) When National Championships Are Won • May 07, 2014 02:34 AM

@drgnslayr

National championships are won in October. You get to lift the trophy in April, but titles are won in October in empty gyms shooting jumpers, and on lonely tracks running wind sprints, and on unforgiving hills doing lunges. They're won at 6am during Hell week and at 4pm in the weight room. You win championships with all the work you put in long before the Fieldhouse fills up for late night.

You win titles when nobody is looking, when your opponents are sleeping, when your competitors are resting, when your rivals are taking the day off.

You win titles with the work you put in when no one is there to applaud you, or congratulate you, or tell you how great you are and how hard you're working and how much the reward will be.

Titles are won inside the heart of every player on the team deciding in themselves that nothing matters more than winning - not individual accolades, not minutes, not shots, nothing.

Titles are won in October. It just takes six months to lift the trophy.

And the hardest working Jayhawk is firmly entrenched into the end of the bench. I feel sorry for AW3...

Illinois prep Brunson considering KU ↗

Kansas University, which landed blue-chip basketball point guard Devonte’ Graham on Friday, has emerged as one of eight finalists for Jalen Brunson, a 6-foot-1 junior point guard from Stevenson High in Lincolnshire, Ill.

Brunson, who is ranked No. 14 in the recruiting Class of 2015 by Rivals.com, tweeted Saturday that he has a list of KU, Michigan State, Michigan, Illinois, Purdue, Villanova, Temple and UConn.

Kansas lands PG Devonte' Graham ↗

Less than 24 hours after learning that it was losing its starting point guard, the Kansas University men's basketball program landed another, when Devonte' Graham, a 6-foot-2 senior point guard from Brewster Academy in New Hampshire announced his plans to join the KU program.

Brewster basketball coach Jason Smith confirmed Graham's decision via Twitter just before noon today. Graham spoke to the Journal-World this afternoon.

Devonte' Graham highlights ↗

In the blink of an eye, KU's point guard position went from having a seasoned veteran leading the way to a list of inexperienced players who will be counted on big time during the 2014-15 season.

Gone is Naadir Tharpe, who announced he was transferring on Thursday, and in his place are sophomores-to-be Frank Mason and Conner Frankamp and newcomer Devonte' Graham, a Brewster Academy prospect who committed to Kansas on Friday.

Kansas moved quickly to replace starting point guard Naadir Tharpe, receiving a commitment from Devonte Graham.

The Jayhawks announced a day earlier that Tharpe would transfer.

Newell: Devonte' Graham commits to KU basketball ↗

LAWRENCE — Kansas coach Bill Self is fired up about his team’s signing of Devonte’ Graham, the nation’s top unsigned basketball recruit that committed to the Jayhawks on Friday morning.

“We got good today,” Self said. “He’s a late-bloomer that’s going to continue to get better. To think that we have a true point guard back there with two other guys that can play point or play off the ball, it gives us more of an opportunity to play small, because Devonte’s a big, strong kid. I’m excited.”

Dodd: Point guard Devonte' Graham commits to KU basketball ↗

LAWRENCE — One day after Naadir Tharpe announced his intentions to transfer, Kansas landed another point guard from Brewster Academy.

Devonte Graham signed with Kansas on Friday. A 6-foot-2 guard, Graham is ranked as the No. 36 overall recruit in the Class of 2014, according to Rivals, and could battle for immediate playing time at Kansas.

Scout's take on Devonte' Graham committing to Kansas ↗

Who he reminds us of: Smith has had his share of elite point guards over the years at Brewster Academy and compares Graham to the others. “He defends like Dogus Balbay [who plays at Texas] while having a quick first step similar to Semaj Christon [who plays for Xavier] and shoots it better than any point guard I ever coached.”

How Kansas' 2014 class is shaping up: With a pair of standouts in No. 11 Kelly Oubre on the wing and No. 3 Alexander inside, Graham is not only the missing piece to this recruiting class, he is the X factor to Kansas being a legitimate Final Four team. This class -- which moved up to No. 5 in the rankings with Graham's commitment -- has offensive firepower along with a defensive mindset and high-level athletic ability to make waves as freshmen.

Careful what you wish for you just may get it. Tharpe is gone.

Self confirms Naadir Tharpe transfer ↗

ESPN: Naadir Tharpe to transfer ↗

With his mom in the stands for 2 games this past season Tharpe was National player of the week (that's a pretty high ceiling). Tharpe at his worst was the cause for a few of my gut problems and a few of KU's losses as well.

The players on the bench have much more upside, but little to no experience. The experience is going to come this year though. I am truly excited to see Frankamp get major minutes. I think he can take this team to a higher level than Tharpe could hope to and is more under control than Mason. I like Mason as a change of pace player and as the second ball handler on the court also.

Reading between the lines: Shaq Cleare signs with Texas (sits for next season) leaving one open scholarship and an one and done will fill that slot nicely without causing a log jam down the road. Tharpe's transfer frees up minutes (and opportunity) for any other point guards. Hmm does KU look more appealing to Graham now? Was Tharpe told Graham is likely coming and will get his minutes. Has Frankamp or Mason come on strong?

Is it October yet?

I'm done with predicting where kids will go (only going to offer my opinion :) ).

Go to KU Myles. KU offers one of if not the best trainer in the USA. Bill Self is a wonderful big man coach, just look at his track record of getting bigs drafted. KU needs a rim protector for the tournament and already has his backup in Mickelson. Myles won't be the only stud on this team so all the pressure won't be on him with Selden, Oubrre, Alexander(HS POY), and Ellis(HS POY) already there. The only pressure at KU will be to win, not to carry the team.

Turner News Headlines • Apr 30, 2014 04:15 AM

I feel if Turner decides Texas he did them a disservice by waiting soo long that his signing will influence no one else's decision. However if he goes to KU or Duke; those classes/teams are pretty complete without him.

40%Texas

To all those wondering if Bill should play hurt players or not; I say if the long term implications are not dire do it. I know I would rather have seen Embiid play hurt in the tournament than not at all. If you think he would have hurt his draft stock look at the big guy from "The" OSU he was drafted #1 in spite of not being able to play his entire rookie year. He also hasn't played more than a handful of games any one year.

Now I don't want to see guys get crippled playing basketball, but if I can go to work the day after chopping my finger tip off they can maybe gut out a mild injury (a broken back is not a mild injury, I know). I work outdoors, but it's not a contact sport - I understand it's not a fair comparison. Tyshawn played a few days after minuscus surgery. Brandon Rush played the season after an ACL surgery. Wayne Selden, Josh Selby, Reed, etc. played all year with a bum wheel. Embiid's parents wouldn't let him play; I have no doubt he would've played (in pain) if he wouldn't have been held out.

Hate to say it, but the two Dukies play really well together.

I saw most of the first half of the Jordan Brand Classic. Alexander was a BEAST! I am absolutely stoked about the prospect of him in a KU uniform. Anyone who said he would be a lateral move from Black is blind. I miss having a player who just dunks the crap out of everything. And I mean nasty two handed jams with intent of doing harm to the rim and anyone silly enough to get in the way!

Oubre doesn't look to shabby either. :)
