@globaljaybird Is that Woodrow in your avatar? Sharp looking dog. Sorry for the now, but glad you had the companionship up to the end. I've loved every one of my dogs, most have come to me as strays and that makes them fiercely loyal.

My prayers are with you in this trying time. Hope the game tonight offers a good distraction.

@approxinfinity This thread isn't showing up on the main page for me. I had to track it down through your comments.

Does anyone else think Mr. Weber looks like Smart's buddy Mr. Orr? Maybe they are cousins...

Last night my initial reaction was the fan (Mr. Orr) is a douche nozzle. I recognized the type instantly, however, my wife (who hates Smart much more than I) was all over Smart's actions.

Smart's actions boarder on physical assault. The D-nozzle is just that. If Texas Tech wants to be represented by that type of character so be it, but Smart needs to be reprimanded. I hope the corrective actions can be taken care of internally and the Big12 doesn't need to come in and make an example of him.

As much as I personally don't care for Smart's flopping, I really think when he plays well (against any team but KU) it's good for the Big 12 and KU.

It's too bad Smart's actions had to detract from a great performance by Eljim. That's the kind of pub. the conference needs.

@JayHawkFanToo No freethrows on charge calls, regardless of the bonus situation.

February 4: News Headlines Digest • Feb 04, 2014 04:41 PM

Sorry @wissoxfan83 meant to reply and accidentally edited your post. I paraphrased you above as I deleted the original post.

Happens. I was at the Big 12 tournament last season. It was freakin' awesome! Saw a few former players and learned exactly how whiny ISU fans are.

I had never been around ISU fans before - all white and mostly middle aged. These suckers whined the whole KU - ISU game about fouls in that game and the previous two match-ups between KU and ISU. After KU beat ISU and advanced to the championship game against KSU, many of the ISU fans were back. They didn't really root for KSU, but just b***hed the whole time about the officiating. I got to hear a running total of all supposed missed calls against KU. Interestingly enough the refs never blew a call on the other teams, they only messed up in KU's favor.

February 4: News Headlines Digest • Feb 04, 2014 03:07 PM

@wissoxfan83 KU won the big 12 tournament last year. But did get waxed by Baylor in Waco.

February 3: News Headlines Digest • Feb 03, 2014 02:27 PM

Games like this are why Black was signed. This is what KU was supposed to do to other teams, but the officiating wasn't to allow this type of game. So KU adjusted to a less physical game. When the physical play picked up with no Black KU was in deep doo doo.

I am still confused how Embiid can tap someone and they go to the monitor, but when he gets body slammed nothing. Look at the reaction of the student in the picture. Even those football fans thought it was excessive.

Time to break out the football pads for practice Bill. I almost feel sorry for Baylor.

January 29: News Headlines Digest • Jan 29, 2014 05:28 PM

@wissoxfan83 That's just through Bill's first 10 years at KU; when he was feeling things out, before he got really good.

@drgnslayr When a legacy kid so no... F'em. I wouldn't trade any one for Forte. Sure he is more productive than Connor so far, but where do the minutes come from? No court time for Mason/Greene/White/Frankamp with Forte there. Talk about mass transfers following this season.

@HighEliteMajor I agree. Bill would develop someone with more upside, unless he needed a Morningstar like glue guy.

Forte was offered as I recall, but I'm sure Self was honest and told him he'd be buried on the bench. I have no idea what Ford told the kid. It worked out great for OSU and Forte.

While I think Forte would be great to have coming off the bench, I wouldn't give up one of our current players for him. Especially since the last player signed was Wiggins. And I sure wouldn't give up Mason for Forte either (I like his fire and upside) .

Embiid told the Associated Press. “Things could change, but I love college. I’m having so much fun on campus, with my teammates. When we play, we have 16,000 people. It’s crazy. It’s not the same thing when you’re in the league.”

@Hawk8086 ;) Gotta love FMJ

This is my seat. There are many like it, but this is mine. My seat is my best friend. It is my life. I must master cheering as I must master my life.

My seat, without me, is useless. Without my seat, I am useless. I must fire my cheers true. I must yell louder than my enemy who is trying to out yell me. I must out cheer him before he out cheers me. I will...

“Just hit the guy next to you. Forget the technique. Hit the guy across from you. Don’t let somebody come in your space.” Karl Malone - ESPN

The way it should be played down low. Embiid won't get penalized for being big in the NBA. Don't drive him away No Contact Athletic Association.

@nuleafjhawk I completely agree. Travis Ford was just being a sarcastic jerk.

  1. Wilt
  2. Manning
  3. JoJo
  4. Clyde L.
  5. Pierce
  6. Chalmers

I thought my brother in law was full of it when he said he saw Rodgers in Lawrence last night. hmm

@wissoxfan83 2AD = more good players for everyone. There are only so many roster spots. It would be great for college basketball, but it's an NBA rule not NCAA.

All the NCAA could do is penalize the schools, maybe by requiring a minimum number of years per scholly awarded (i.e. 2 years). That way if a player left after one year the school is down a scholarship the next year. This would deter most schools from being OAD factories due to the inevitable down year. I don't think Calipari would care. However, this would penalize schools like KU who have an unexpected OAD in Embiid.

Born an Arizonan; blessed to be a Jayhawk. My soul is clean; I've rooted for no other.

“Kansas is still the favorite. Wiggins is, from what I understand, the best player to ever play. I’ve seen him play and he’s really good. They’re still the No. 1 team and should be. They’ve got tons of talent, they’ve got depth, they’ve got the best player to ever play at Kansas and that’s a pretty good deal.” Travis Ford

KSU senior Shane Southwell,

“It’s crucial,” he added of the game in Allen Fieldhouse. “I never won there or even got close to winning there. I want to get a win there. It is going to be hard to look back on my life and say I did not get a win in that arena.”

Gonna have to live with that one, bud.

Fantastic.

@HighEliteMajor I kinda like that line-up. And agree with your substitution as well, but I never saw his big game coming. Maybe there will be more from Black.

@justanotherfan I believe they are adjusted for college. The data is from Sports Reference ↗ Interesting data there that goes back 17 years. 100+ years of limited data.

As noted many times over, the play at the 1and 2 spots is what is holding this team back. Improvement is needed at all positions, but guard play is lacking so far. Here's the PER stats as of 1/7/14. They are not weighted for playing time.

The joys of a young team. They spice it up for the coaches and the fans.

I fully expect this team, to beat teams, that I expect them to lose to.

Minor bug, really. The age in my profile has added a year at the conclusion of 2013, but my b-day isn't until November. I don't mind but if I was 39 instead of 35 I may have freaked out though. ;)

KU-SDSU: Three Reasons We Lost • Jan 06, 2014 05:37 PM

@HighEliteMajor You are right. The defense of all the players at times has been sub-par. Wiggins d is better than expected though.

I don't necessary feel Brannen's D is atrocious, but he compounds his mistakes. He has made positive strides since the start of the season. However he needs to react with his feet, not his face while standing motionless.

I'd like to see Greene spell Selden instead of Mason, but he is very inconsistent and at this point is a net negative. Once Greene stops looking like a freshman he'll be OK. Currently 22.7% of Brannen's possessions end up in turnovers, but his 47% eFGPercentage isn't bad.

KU-SDSU: Three Reasons We Lost • Jan 06, 2014 05:19 PM

@MoonwalkMafia Selden is out of position far less than Greene. Selden may disappear at times, but you always know where Greene, look for the out of position guy causing the rest of the defense to be out of position trying to cover (Wiggins has picked up some fouls because of Greene)Or he's the guy making faces as he watches the defender streak down the court after he turns it over. Greene is the better shooter, but gives up more points than he could ever hope to create at this point. He will be a stud he's just further removed than Selden from his potential greatness.

I do think this team would benefit from a great three point shooter, but not if he gives up points at an alarming rate.

As I stated earlier. Sounds like you have given up on the season. Why continue to develop NBA talent instead of next years players? Bench Wiggins and Embiid and develop the supporting class for Oubre and Alexander.

Personally I want to see Bill to continue to develop the players that will give KU the best chance at a title this year. Let's worry about next year in the off season.

Post-game Roundup: Kansas vs SDSU • Jan 06, 2014 05:07 PM

@nuleafjhawk I'm glad we didn't have to see Perry cry after missing a free throw to tie and fumbling the rebound (that would have given KU a shot for the win) out of bounds. He looked defeated after that. I was hoping he would respond with fire. Poor guy.

KU-SDSU: Three Reasons We Lost • Jan 06, 2014 04:55 PM

@MoonwalkMafia If Bill is so stupid and this year is a loss, why not sit Wiggins and Embiid so that Lucas and Greene can develop? No sense in developing a player for the NBA at the expense of next years experience. Right?

Personally I want to win now. I want success in this years tourney. Bill is giving the team the best chance to succeed. Just like last year with EJ playing over Tharpe. Does anyone think that Thapre would've been the better point guard last year after watching Naadir play this year?

I don't think this current group of players can beat ISU or OSU the way they are currently playing. But they are young and will mature as the season progresses. The most talented pieces need the most experience by March to give KU the best chance at a national title.

KU-SDSU: Three Reasons We Lost • Jan 06, 2014 04:47 PM

Brannen Greene will be a good if not great basketball player, but any who are calling for his shooting now are forgetting how many points he gives up. He is constantly out of position on defense allowing the other team to score. It's not always his man, but being out of position cause others to shift to help leaving their man open. He also pouts after bad plays instead of just reacting to correct the mistake.

Wiggins and Selden need another year of college ball. Embiid could use another year of adjusting to the culture and learning the basics.

Experience is what this team needs and is what they are getting. Will it be enough by tournament time?

This team will be good in a year or two, but many of the current pieces will be gone. I hope the early defectors are still in the NBA by what could be their senior year in Lawrence.

@approxinfinity 'tis the season "I’m in a great mood and I think there’s a lot of things we did well and everybody have a damn Happy New Year!" Bill Self

@JayHawkFanToo

Potential unrealized at this point.

Potential I hope is realized in crimson and blue.

Potential to win a national championship.

Potential to dash our hopes?

Potential to immortalize.

If Wiggins can consistently score 20+ points per game, I don't care how many assist he has.

I think Wiggins has Oscar Robinson potential. 30pts 12reb 11assists per. Teammates have to make shots for the assists, but the rest is in his hands.

Just dreaming here...

I wish tying up Tyler for another year would guarantee another year of Bill. Is the jump to the NBA from college equal in pull as it is from assistant to head coach (i.e. DMann)?

Personally I think there is no better coaching job than at KU period. I hope Bill retires at a ripe old age a Jayhawk. I hope Bill retires because winning national championships has become routine. But I thought Roy would still be at KU also.

My crimson and blue colored spectacles won't allow me to imagine a scenario that entices Bill to leave. I know I wouldn't.

What I'm going to return today. • Dec 27, 2013 07:53 PM

@drgnslayr I would take no joy in beating WSU until they have beaten KU a few times. So maybe in a couple decades I would look forward to the annual trouncing KU will give WSU, but this series was boring in the early 90s and would get that way again rather quickly. Outside of the 4 years in 20 that WSU is good this game would be very one sided.

For personal reasons I'd like to see the game in Wichita happen (it's only a 3.5 hr drive instead of 6.5), but I doubt the scariest gets renewed anytime soon.

Black octagon on the iPad also.

“It’s one of the bad rules we have,” Self said. “If a kid is going to transfer, he should sit. Everybody sits across the board. Even in Tarik’s situation, he graduates in three years. If you want to go somewhere else and play, do so and allow the red-shirt (season) to happen. If you want to work on your masters, you get two years, which ensures the masters. I wish there was more an academic component to it.

I would take it one step further than Bill. If a coach leaves his school while still under contract he must sit out a year also. I don't know why a student athlete should be punished for switching schools when the school can drop the scholarship at any time with no consequences. A coach can change schools with no transgressions following him i.e. Cal.

So why not hold the coaches to the same standards as the kids. They both have contracts and the coaches contract is worth considerably more than the students free ride. Why is the student the only one who is made to hold up his end of the contract?

Be Safe In The Snow! • Dec 25, 2013 06:14 AM

@nuleafjhawk hahaha. Not too far off from our Saturday drive from SW Kansas to south of the KC area.

My cousin said last Sunday in KC after church he was driving home. When he came to a intersection with road work blocking the left turn lane. So he parked at the light blocking the left turn lane partially due to the slick road conditions.

A car came up behind him, honked passed him on the right (at a red). The male driver and his female passenger flipped him off as did their kid in the back. Which left my cuz with his jaw open following the sermon on being kind and giving in the season. The whole famdamily.

They whipped into the intersection (with a giant hole) tried to turn left and had to swerve back into the intersection ahead of the traffic that was waiting on the green.:) No curtesy wave either.
