@approxinfinity I enjoyed digging up the quotes and hope to find more. It's funny what will jar a memory.

Which version of "Ain't no seats" the sleeping in class or cheating? I'm hoping its the sleeping or some other version that's true.

Time to Swing Perry 3/4 • Dec 25, 2013 02:47 AM

Perry stated coming out of high school that he wanted to play the three. Perry is most likely a three in the nba not a four. However as someone sated (more eloquently than myself using JuJu Wright as an example) Bill will play him at the four because that is what is best for KU.

If Perry can play 35 minutes at the four he's worth more to KU that playing any minutes at the three. That scenario would put the better 3 (Wiggins) out of position or on the bench. Therefore the positive of having Ellis on the floor is neutralized by the removal of a better option at the 3 (or a better 3-4 combo)

Time to Swing Perry 3/4 • Dec 25, 2013 02:35 AM

@globaljaybird I too am looking forward to seeing more minutes from Greene. Once he cuts down on the mental errors and learns how to properly react after making a legit mistake, he'll play a ton of minutes. As long as Brannen keeps his chin up and ears open he'll get a ton of minutes at some point. By his junior year he will be an absolute stud, but KU needs more production from him now!

Merry Christmas, and thanks for a happy new year of reading KUbuckets, aprox!

Is Selden a OAD? • Dec 24, 2013 03:50 PM

At this point Selden isn't ready for the league, but the NBA drafts on potiential. Selden could get drafted in the first round. Wayne is in the top 12-20 on the draft boards I've seen.

That said, I think it would be a mistake for Selden to go pro after this season unless he make major strides by the years end. I'd hate to see him buried on a bench in the league, just to make the same money he could've after being a God in Lawrence for 2-3 years.

Is Selden a OAD? • Dec 23, 2013 11:02 PM

Tharpe going pro is a little tongue in cheek.

Is Selden a OAD? • Dec 23, 2013 10:59 PM

It would change the look of the team, but Frankamp isn't ready and White just seems a step slow. My opinion is ever evolving so ask me next at the end of the year, and again next October, and again in November.

I think Greene has the potential to energize a team. His energy when properly harnessed will turn him into a great all around baller. (Auto correct thinks that should read ballerina :) ) He's long and a good outside shooter, but not much of a slasher/ball handler.

Mason will get minutes too, unless Tharpe goes pro.

@KirkIsMyHinrich Greene.

JaQuan Lyle • Dec 23, 2013 10:46 PM

Turner for a footer to replace Embiid is looking more and more like a need. Too bad Bill's gotta play Joel so much. Bill's right the more he plays Embiid the short his stay in Lawrence will be.

Welcome home Jaybate. Now if Oakville would just pay a visit the site would be truly complete.

Here's looking forward to your unique and often educational basketball posts. The X's and O's thrill me and the conspiracy theories entertain me in the summer. Thanks for all the good reads and here's looking forward to more!

Jay Bilas: Ad Nauseam • Dec 22, 2013 04:20 PM

Normally I like Bilas, but this game was terrible. He sounded like a jaded Dookie. I wonder if KU had lost to Duke what this game would've sounded like. There have been times that I though Jay was very pro KU, but something is in his craw.

Dec 21: Game Day Stories • Dec 21, 2013 06:58 PM

Should be a game day story: So that's what Bill saw in Black!

Bill Self is not Marty McFly getting called a chicken. He will not concede to his anger/annoyance when scheduling next season. No one tells Bill who to play. Begging would've been a better place for Marshall to start.

Allen fieldhouse is sold out no matter who is in town. So playing the Shocks in two neutral court sites away from Lawrence has a negative impact on the local Lawrence economy.

My parents and sister went to WSU, I went to KU. I have always pulled for the Shockers (I don't rember 1981 as I was 3), but recently WSU has become increasingly annoying. The coach calling out KU? One final four and Marshall thinks he owns the state. I'm trying to figure this one out. It's kinda like a chihuahua barking at you as you walk by. Not much substance behind that bark.

Myles Turner and Funny Odds • Dec 18, 2013 03:04 AM

This years draft class may rival that of '86. No one will know for about ten years though.

KU is scared to schedule the Shocks, that's why Kansas' strength of schedule is soo weak.

Myles Turner and Funny Odds • Dec 17, 2013 01:09 AM

@Wishawk One asterisk to your above statement, no Jordan in 94-95. On an aside if there had been no Jordan for the rest of Hakeems career who knows how many championships the rockets would've won.

Myles Turner and Funny Odds • Dec 16, 2013 06:04 PM

I too strongly dislike the OAD rule, however after giving it some thought it's probably not too far off. Two an done would be better. Two years min. If you elect to go to college or go pro straight out of high school. Three years was my initial thought too, but the playing careers are too short to steal too many work days. I'm just hitting my stride in my career 12 years in; I'd be a washed up pro by now at 35.

The quick yank • Dec 16, 2013 05:48 PM

Before the season began Self said that Brannen would be the headliner in most recruiting classes. I think we are seeing the beginning of Brannen's coming out party. As a junior this guy will be a stud! I'm hoping he can provide the outside shooting this years team needs to bust up zones.

Inquiring Minds Want to Know..... • Dec 12, 2013 07:31 PM

There is no reason to play WSU home and home. At Allen I'm sure something could be worked out, but no way KU goes to Wichita. Waste of a non-con game. Even a two for one is too much to ask. It does nothing for KU in recruiting or expanding viewership.

Mason is Collins • Dec 12, 2013 07:27 PM

When Collins went into the lane as a Frosh it wasn't Sherron lying on the floor in a heap every drive. Good or bad he flat out floored many a defender. Under the new rule interpretation Sherron would've have 4-6 more points per night due to his aggressive drives resulting in free-throws instead of a charge.

Post-game Roundup: KU vs Florida • Dec 12, 2013 04:21 PM

@Blown (response to LJW post, I can't bring myself to post there still) Some of the rainbow passes were thrown by Wiggins, so height is not the only problem. The main problem with this team is experience. There's only one way to get it; unfortunately for these guys it's gonna be on national tv.

Glad I didn't have to mature on television.

Post-game Roundup: KU vs Florida • Dec 11, 2013 04:14 PM

@globaljaybird "Will have to re watch & see how often Perry was boxed out, but when the zone collapses there has to be seams for cutters."

I told my wife as soon as the game was over,"The best thing about this game is I don't have to watch it again. Unfortunately for Bill he has to watch it again." You must have a penchant for punishment also.

Luckily for us this wasn't a season ending loss, so Bill will watch the tape. The team will learn and grow from this loss and hopefully so will Bill.

Sometimes I wonder if Kansas doesn't play much if any zone until Tournament time so it's not on tape. Or is it just an act of desperation? It usually works to some degree so why not use it more, too many open looks from the corner? A good man defense gives no uncontested shots. (one answer looking for more)

Post-game Roundup: KU vs Florida • Dec 11, 2013 04:01 PM

The first half of last nights game caused me to walk away from a KU game (for 20 minutes) for the first time ever. Too many unforced errors. I've thrown junk, I've yelled, I've changed clothes, I've changed seats, I've gotten new beverages, I've cringed, I've cried, but I've never walked away before last night's 21-0 run. I left after 18-0 maybe I should've walked outside sooner.

My wife thought the game started at 7cst I think the team did too. The second half was much easier to watch. Not good, but at least you could see the potential again.

Donovan is right the ceiling on this team is great, much greater than his team for sure. Will Bill be able to adapt to the rules and meld his team fast enough? I don't know, but KU will be much better after the break. KU will be great by years end, but there will be some growing pains.

Donovan threw as many Defenses at KU as possible. This is great for the development of a young team and will be valuable experience come tournament time. Right or wrong under the new rules, Bill is sticking to his philosophy: master of Man to Man defense is better than jack of all defenses master of none.

Post-game Roundup: KU vs Colorado • Dec 08, 2013 02:55 PM

If KU's gotta lose on ten last second shots to make up for Mario's Miracle, so be it. It's all reciprocal.

I don't want to sound like sour grapes so I'll just summarize what I thought of the CU game: poop

Dec 6 Headlines: Mason to start at PG • Dec 06, 2013 04:38 PM

@justanotherfan Once Wiggins and Selden figure out how to make the defense work to cover them off the ball watch out!

Dec 6 Headlines: Mason to start at PG • Dec 06, 2013 04:36 PM

Just my opinion. Black is going to be the more consistent practice player due to experience (and reports are that he's a practice stud). Black and Embiid both foul at an alarming rate. Embiid has more athleticism, scoring ability, and upside in general. Fouls are usually called at a higher rate at the beginning of a game due to the refs establishing themselves. So if up you have two hackers at the same position, the second one into the game (in theory) should foul out after playing more minutes.

Another theory: Bill didn't want to play Embiid this season (alaThomas Robinson et al). Embiid thinks he's not good enough to go pro. Next season Embiid bursts onto the scene like BMac last year. And Bill secures his 11th straight.

MTV versus "March Madness" • Dec 04, 2013 07:36 PM

I loved watching Bill Self coached teams figure out defense. How many games out of the last 100 or so (before this season) had KU held its opponent under 40% shooting? Will KU be allowed to play lock-down defense again come conference time? Will KU keep more than the occasional opponent under 40% shooting? Another question is the lack of defense as much about youth and inexperience as the rule changes? Will a younger team adapt quicker? All these and more burning questions are rattling around in my skull waiting for the season to answer them!

@truehawk93 It's much easier to get up to play KU than to play UTEP. That's a bad attitude, but a fact of life. If the consolation game was against UNC or Duke the energy level probably would've been greater.

MTV versus "March Madness" • Dec 04, 2013 07:09 PM

I've found myself watching football games and wishing they had been edited down to about one hour of action and reaction. The 3-3.5hr marathon that s football doesn't fit into a busy day at all. Basketball with all the stops in action to shoot free throws is almost as bad. I have never been bored watching KU play before this season, but the non-stop calls are ruining basketball.

@Wishawk Where'd his nose go? Lost to the grindstone?

Hard Rotation Decisions Need To Come Soon • Nov 23, 2013 10:42 PM

I like Mason's upside and I like Tharpe's newfound ball control. Last year I was calling for Tharpe to play over EJ at the one. Am I just the typical fan making the backup quarterback the most popular guy in town?

Pre-gaming with Jesse Newell -- Q&A • Nov 22, 2013 12:30 AM

Jesse, best guess. If Bill signs one or two more players who will they be and who will they be replacing?

@globaljaybird I'm not sure if it will work to stream espn3 yet, but it may have found a work around. Google and Install anonymox you have to use Firefox as your browser also. This will change your IP address to somewhere not blacked out. You may have to delete the cookies also (there is an option in the program to do so). Look for the blue x in the top right corner of your screen after installing. This is not an endorsement I have no clue if the program is full of spyware, but I'm out of options here.

I feel the only way KU will attract more fans is to get good in football. Not better, but GOOD in football for a number of years. That fixes all the problems. Instead of selling you soul for more TV sets, they come crawling to you and I can watch KU basketball in SW Kansas.

A good football team can generate much more revenue than a good basketball team. The NCAA makes sure of that thru various policies. If KU could get properly compensated for its basketball team in March it would relieve a lot pressure.

@drgnslayr And to think I once wanted to be an attorney. I can't stand the lying, condescending, judgmental jerks and that's the good ones who've won for us...

You are right the University of Kansas could ill afford to stand still, but alienating the local fans, your neighbors, is the last thing I'd do. Maybe I'm wrong, but there has to be another way.

I wish we'd get a KU guy in as admin at KSU and cut a few football games in Kansas in favor of showing more basketball games in Alaska and see how long he lasts.
