I respectably agree!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

SEE ABOVE.

THOSE RANKINGS REQUIRE AN ASTERISK AND EVERYONE WITH A WORKING MEMORY RECALLS IT.

DONOVAN AND NORM HAD HIM STAKED OUT AND HE WAS PLAYING BEHIND SOMEONE LIKE DAKINE AND HAD TO CHANGE SCHOOLS BECAUSE HE WAS SUCH A PROJECT.

I DON'T CARE IF HE WAS RANKED NUMBER 1, OR EVEN NUMBER 1+, IF THE GUY WASN'T EVEN PROJECTED TO START AND PLAY TILL HIS SECOND SEASON HE WAS NOT PART OF THE HIGHEST CUT OADS/5-STARS THAT DUKE, UNC, AND UK WERE THEN GETTING COMING OUT THEIR EARS.

TALK APPLES AND APPLES.

"WORK THE PROBLEM, PEOPLE"--GENE KRANZ

@BShark

Ranking yes. BUT PUT AN ASTERISK BY THAT RANKING, OKAY?

EMBIID was listed as a prospect that would likely not even start till his second season; THAT IS NOT AN OAD/5-STAR READY TO START AND PLAY AS A FRESHMAN OF THE KIND THAT DUKE, UK AND UNC ROUTINELY HAVE GOTTEN THE LAST THIRTEEN YEARS.

OH, AND EMBIID IS ONE PROJECT THAT DEVELOPED UNEXPECTEDLY OVER THIRTEEN YEARS!!!!!! AND HE WAS CLUBBED LIKE A BABY SEAL AND THROWN ON HIS BACK AND DIDN'T FINISH THE SEASON.

REPEAT AFTER ME...THIRTEEN YEARS!!!!!!!!!!! ONE TOP CENTER...AND HE WAS A PROJECT!

AND WHERE ARE ALL OF KU"S LONG AND MEDIUM STACKS THAT KU SHOULD GET ON A LEVEL PLAYING FIELD EITHER THE SAME YEAR DUKE, UK AND UNC GET THEM, OR IN THE YEARS AFTER?

ISN'T IT KU'S TURN TO GET LONG AND MEDIUM STACKS FOR FIVE YEARS...13 YEARS?

FOR CRYING OUT LOUD!!!!!

KU IS GETTING THE HELL SCREWED OUT OF IT BY THIS RECRUITING REGIME EVEN WITH ANDREW WIGGINS ONE YEAR AND JOSH JACKSON THREE YEARS LATER.

"WAKE UP PEOPLE....WORK THE PROBLEM!!!!--GENE KRANZ

@BShark

Nope. Embiid was listed as a project. He even had to leave his high school team to not be stuck behind another phenom center that later didn't do so well.

@KansasComet

You're onto it.

Self said this would be the season Svi would blossom and he's struggled.

And Vick passed him.

He's got to keep fighting and the go to the off season and retool yet again.

Self may even have lowered the boom about incoming recruits and Vick relegating him to substitute status next year. Svi and Self could be thinking about moving on next season.

Another one of those numbers things.

It is like the door opens for a short while and if you don't walk through, it's not going to open again.

GRAYSON ALLEN IS A DIRTY PLAYER • Mar 05, 2017 06:20 AM

Okay everyone, you've restored me to my senses.

Allen is a generic Duke cheap shotter.

So Lately... • Mar 05, 2017 05:48 AM

Svi is in his big slump and feeling pressure from Vick.

Vick keeps getting better and Self rewards that more than anything.

Vick was in at crunch time.

That's the writing on the wall.

@BShark

Cliff was a 4, definitely not a near footer 5. He was barely 6-8 and really limited.

And Self has had some very good 4s. Shady was Big time 4, when recruited. Perry was a 5-star. Self is allowed to sign 3s and 4s.

Self's problem is 1, 2, and 5, where it's largely been a 13 year drought for OADS.

GRAYSON ALLEN IS A DIRTY PLAYER • Mar 05, 2017 05:38 AM

@Blown

Duke's Allen fascinates me some.

I don't like him much, but I feel some empathy for him the same as I did at times for Ron Artest.

The authorities are cutting him quite a lot of slack, same as they did Artest. Many say too much.

Like a Ron Artest, he is easy to despise for how he cheap shots.

But like a Ron Artest, he has lots of talent and makes his team better.

After being a feared bad ass, Artest eventually harnessed his bad boy stuff after a long controversial stretch in the NBA. He was very good both as a bad ass and as a more controlled player. Allen hardly seems a bad ass--more of a baby faced assassin.

Arrest said teams and coaches wanted him to play the way he did and be an intimidator.

Does Allen's team?

Likkewise, John Salley, Rick Mahorn, James Edwards, Bill Laimbeer, Isaiah Thomas and Dennis Rodman formed an entire team that were unapologetic about being calculated about intimidation and cheap shotting. They were all skilled trippers among many other black arts. Opposing Fans hated them. Even Michael Jordan hated them.

But Allen hardly seems a bad ass, or a bad boy.

Maybe Duke's coaching staff has encouraged Allen to play as he does.

Or maybe Allen developed it and the coaches have taken a ride on it.

He's hardly the dirtiest player ever. He's among the most blatant dirty players, however

But there are two other unlikely but intriguing possibilities that have occurred to me.

First, What if Allen has some kind of a disability--something like autism? Or some syndrome that makes him trip and elbow uncontrollably? Maybe the way Turrettes Syndrome makes persons shout epithets and twitch unpredictably.

What if what we witnessed were the best he could control it? What if the Duke coaches were doing their best to minimize it? What if he is being given some second chances, because it's a disability driven thing?

I've watched Allen and his behaviors look sometimes calculated and other times impulsive. But in both cases he appears to act without any attempt at concealment. He is egregious and obvious. This is unlike many bad boys, who are masters of concealment when they want to "get away with it." Maybe Allen has a disability that makes him lack the insight to make any effort at concealment. The lack of concealment is odd, as is the often unnecessaryness of what he does. He doesn't need to do much of what he does to be effective. But then the same could have been said of Ron Artest.

I have another speculation, but now that I've thought about it's just too weird to mention here.

They sure looked like it today.

@HighEliteMajor

Among your best.

I will only say that I still have no clear idea of what actually happened in this incident and so I have no way of knowing whether his treatment by Self and the authorities was appropriate. I suspect the reason I have no clear idea is that university managers of this situation managed it so an unclear impression was left in the public' minds. Not saying that Josh, or they did anything worthy of more than what has resulted. But as we have learned with political spin, since Bill Clinton's time in the public eye, the more you Balkanize and compartmentalize stories, even when you have nothing more to hide, the more you create a news vacuum for the media to play anyway they want.

You would think ORGANIZATIONS would learn they are setting themselves up for this when they intensely manage the stories. I suspect they have learned and still think it's worth the ensuing black eye of the media going fishing, in order to keep the media and others as far from their other skeletons, known or not, as possible.

Watching CBernie and Zenger deal with the aftermath of Scalping gate, Mangino, and Lew, it appears they hired Charlie Weiss as much to manage what they did not yet know might be buried, as to build a winning program.

Increasingly leadership in many fields seems to manage to reduce risks of what they don't know they don't know.

And they are willing to tolerate the media's blind fishing expeditions as a trade off.

Or so it appears.

After 13 straight titles, and a ring the one time he had comparable material, and being arguably the most imitated coach of his generation, really, only the insouciant, or disingenuous, can come to the conclusion that the REAL explanation is Self doesn't know how to coach in the tournament.

I always imagine them texting each other after they post Self can't coach the Carney well, and writing something like: "Can you believe the morons keep taking us remotely seriously when we post Self can't coach the Carney? "...this is a large, season long sample and not an anomaly."

Tell this to Tyshawn Taylor who fell precipitously from dizzying heights for him his last season.

Frank shot 38% from Trey last season, if I recall correctly.

Frank could not make another shot this season and probably only fall to 38%, which would be shooting back to average.

What makes this all dicey are his injuries. He's reputedly a great shot. He was "nicked up" last year and shot 38%. This year he has seemed healthier until recently when the one leg started being dragged around. Will high mpg and leg problems turn him into last year's Frank, or was last year's Frank the real Frank?

Further, Frank hasn't had the one big slump each season most outside shooters have--the 4-6 game stretch where they just can't find the range. It can come any time of year. But it almost always does come.

Frank is ripe for a big slump. He hasn't had his yet and he has played big minutes and is dragging a leg in early March.

It only takes a couple off shooting games this late for opposing coaches to gamble he is in one and sag off early and choke off our other hot shooters; that's how losses often happen in March.

Impact players enter slumps at the point of one and out.

Some Game Day Dashes and Dots • Mar 04, 2017 04:55 PM

Remember Morse Code? Dots and dashes? Public schools once taught us about Samuel F. B. Morse's contribution to the US WAR OF THE WITHDRAWAL, ER, CIVIL WAR--back when I was a kid. Every kid in my neighborhood used to try to learn Morse code and fail to, and instead walk around imitating the sound of Morse code key operation. We imitated the dee-duh-dee-dee sound we heard in old Saturday morning Westerns we loved, but did not then appreciate the admirable moral truths that were wrapped inside the farcical historical misrepresentations of old oaters. Here follows some basketball Morse code...

Will dragging that numb leg limit Frank's driving AND his 51% trifectation, or will Super Frank respond to treatments, hyper heal and continue his incredible season? Head says here comes the slump. Heart says Frank becomes a legend and shoots his way to a championship.

Without Sessions, can Trump continue rumored Rope-a-Dope and pedo sweep for Deep State informants to use to take down Deep Staters? If the Deep State doesn't get Trump by the rumored planned summer economic meltdown, will private prison over-crowding of Deep Staters ensue coincident with an Iran War? Or are we in retreat to a defensible position behind THE WALL?

Will Svi stop thinking too much as Self reputedly advises him to do, or will Svi instead begin thinking too much about thinking too much? A break out game in the B12 Tourney could really prime him for a strong March Carney but will it happen? To Svi, or no to Svi, that is the question.

Speaking of the Carney, WHICH team would be the toughest FInals match up? I pick UA. Size and talent on the perimeter. Like to play at a good clip and Stumpy's guys like to mix it up some. More depth. And UA has some length inside. It would be a great game. It's that kind of year. Even Stumpy has to be given his due, when there are no long stacks anywhere.

Who would have thought Melanie Trump was reputedly worth more than Donald Trump? That could get interesting down the road if the tax returns finally get subpoened.

Without KU basketball, would the Big 12 rank as a Power Five conference in D1 sports overall? The B12 does appear to get asymmetrically marginalized on most issues, but at this point, the apparent marginalizing seems to have taken its toll. Is the Big 12 a football power? A track power? Baseball? Tennis? Golf? Curling?

The B12 north and the Big Ten need to merge to form the Big Great Lakes Mega Region conference and so become the biggest dog in the pack. If the regional planners get it, surely two dozen university chancellors can.

Allen Field House. Naismith Court. The Sports Hall of memorabilia. The practice court. It's all a complex. Name it "THE BILL SELF BASKETBALL COMPLEX."

Today's game is meaningless for both teams and that's what makes it so important. It's pure basketball without all the horse excrement stuck to the "meaningful" games. It's about who wants to play and win for the sheer love of it. It makes me think Josh will show up for it big time. He clearly loves the game.

The next time I hear one true word from the MSM I am probably going to go into shock. They even appear to lie about the weather. They never report that the cloud seeding by chemtrails should give us a 70% chance of rain in two days!!!

Landen is the key! Can he find a way to hold his own without a thumb? Try living a day without one of your thumbs. But Tape it. Don't cut it off.

If Frank finally has his 9 game shooting slump that brings his gaudy 51% trifectation down to the realistic for him low 40s, this team is going to fight and scramble with one hand tied behind its back, same as the 2012 team did when Tyshawn came down out of the stratosphere from treyville.

And one of those nine games, KU is ulnerable to not being able to compensate; that is the danger.

So IMHO we need for Frank to defy the law of averages and stay on a tear.

@DCHawker

First, kinda sensy, eh? You're wheeling out the old "you got nothing" cliche, when if I had nothing, you would have no reason to respond. Right? I even concede you have "something." It just appears too implausible for me to be persuaded.

Second, you appear upset that I called into question the meaning of the very thing you appeared to feel quite justified in thinking; that the B12 has underperformed and it's its own fault. You appear to imply it could have done better, but some how failed. ✔right?

But then here I came along suggesting maybe it did about the way it would be expected given the topo of the playing field. Grrrrrrrr. Dissonance. Double grrrrrrrrrr.

Then the cliche "you got nuthin'."

I can see why you might get annoyed. It must have felt pretty good to judge the B12 leaders and coaches and players as just not having been up to your sense of snuff. ✔ right? You hated to say it, but they just have been significantly worse than the 4 other conferences that you had to do your duty, like you had to with me having nothing, right?

But like I said; then I unintentionally turned your explanation upside down. What if the Big 12 folks did good, but the playing field were a leeeeeeetle unlevel?

Then boom! "You got nuthin', bate 1.0." Ooooh the predictability of it gives me goose bumps.

Third, you also give me some weird feelings; like you appear to be rejecting my hypothesis to distract from the apparent inelegance and apparent implausibility of your "explanation". Your "explanation" seems vaguely like: an elephant can hang from a daisy; i.e., a conference of highly paid professionals can underperform 4 others over a long period on a level playing field. 😄 Creative and metaphysically possible, I grant you, but does it really elegantly, plausibly, validly and with high probability explain why one of five power conferences would violate the statistical tendency of a random walk of conference performance in the long run without biasing in the context? Hmmmmm, I just can't quite buy your explanation as a fitting explanation. But I am magnanimous by comparison: You GOT SUMTHIN'. 🤓

Nevertheless, I apologize for annoying you.

Have a nice day and we'll find a fitting answer to the mystery of the under performing conference sooner or later.

Rock Chalk!

Haters, wanna challenge our Conference? • Mar 02, 2017 09:29 PM

@DCHawker I appreciate your effort, but wouldnt your "explanation" require a vastly greater array of assumptions and statistical improbabilities and complexity as precondition than my hypothesis of simple entertainment values driving seeding and whistle asymmetry against B12 team's chances for success? My hypothesis is so very simple . and elegant. Yours requires such improbable underlying randomness on a consistent basis producing a recurrent pattern over a long period! It's just hard for me to believe that randomness in the face of such variation and.complexity can produce the bias of outcomes you attribute to the B12.

The bottom line is that of the power conferences, the B12 has the fewest titles (tied), the worst W-L record (by far), the fewest different teams in the title game and Final Four. Performance has been especially poor over the past decade (last year was one of the best in many years).

But this only makes sense, since the B12 appears to face the most asymmetry in seeding and whistles every season. It would only make sense for the B12 to do better than it has done, if it faced no apparent asymmetry in seeding and whistles.

I really don't think this is rocket science.

It keeps going on year and after year.

It happens whether the B12 has great coaches, and lots of talent, or only good coaches and less talent.

Don't you see? If things were not being driven by entertainment values and there were apparent seeding and whistle symmetry, we would expect the B12 to do at least as well as the other conferences.

I just don't see any other logical explanation for the phenomenon.

You don't seriously think the B12 has an inferiority complex, or some kind of chaotic "strange tendency" that makes them under perform relatively to the other power conferences, do you?

I mean, think about it. All of the B12 teams recruit all over the country, same as the other Power Five conference programs do. All the top programs in all the Power Five Conferences get players from all over the country. There would be no reason for the recurring phenomenon of the B12 doing worse that the other conferences over a long period if seeding and whistles were symmetric. Its not like it used to be when teams depended heavily on local talent that the population concentrations favored teams in big cities and densely populated regions. Self and staff can go out recruiting on a private jet every day anywhere in the country. Now they don't even have to bother with finding the top talent because the top 100 is sorted out for them every season. They are televised everywhere all the time, so there is no huge edge there either in terms of making your brand known.

It just has to be something like seeding and whistle asymmetry, Petroshoeco-Agency dynamics, or something else as yet unknown, that is biasing the outcomes as they are. Its been going on too long to be random. And the Big 12 has had too many runs of fine coaches and good talent for the tendency of the outcomes observed to occur.

Something appears to be biasing the outcomes.

@Crimsonorblue22

Bragg? I don't know. I believe the only chance he has for recovery this season is if we all agree that he has no chance; that is usually when guys come around; when Self can walk up to them and say, "You know, no one believes in you any more, but I do." Then they go out and do something incredible. Gotta put Bragg behind the :8ball:

National titles since 1990? We know the big names - Duke 5, UConn 4, UK 3, UNC 3.

Glad you brought these up.

I've been needing a Memory Hole Pump Out...

Duke 5: one with an obviously hopelessly impossible without Deep Basketball forces long stack that even Bo Ryan called Rent-a-players; that leaves 4; one with the pioneering introduction of XTReme Cheap Shotting vs. Butler in which refs appeared to completely favor Dook by not so much allowing the cheap shotting but appearing to enable it; that leaves 3 and one of those had a player that was reputedly playing for expensive jewelry; that leaves 2 and I bet anyone with a better memory than mine can whittle away at least one, or maybe e both of the remaining "championships." Next.

UConn 4: Calhoun won the last two having to quit after each one and hide behind cardiac problems to avoid reputed recruiting death penalties; that leaves 2 and both of those reputedly involved rosters that never earned a sheep skin and heavy recruiting investigations; that leaves zero. Next.

UK 3: Oh, shit, why even both beating this corrupt dead, horse. ZERO. Next.

UNC: Como se dice Easygate? It is not clear that UNC would have even been able to field a team some of those seasons had they had to go to class and take real tests. ZERO. Next.

These are not the big names any more.

These are the FAKE big names.

These are recent equivalent to the Rupp Kentucky point shaving teams.

They aren't even relevant to talking about D1 basketball really.

They have just been AAU teams on Steroids allowed to play long exhibition seasons with D1 teams.

There is no more similarity regarding the apparent "rules of the game" between the recent title stealing AAU on Steroid teams--Duke, UConn, UK and UNC--have been playing under and KU than saying KU and them wear shorts and shoot at ten foot baskets on the same size floor. Similarities stop there and everyone knows it, or has not been "woke."

Next. :smiley:

...Someone else shooting 51% from treyville on 5-7 3ptas per game.

KU also needs for Frank's leg he was dragging to get better. I fear Frank is entering his slump same as Tyshawn did down the stretch with a nagging injury triggering it.

But like Donald Trump, this team has defied the odds many times.

Here is to hoping for another month of brilliance from Frank!!!!

Landen Lucas Injury • Mar 02, 2017 04:43 PM

@justanotherfan

What has impresssd me most about this team has been it's ability to replace last season's scoring and rebounding of the Composite 5 center of last season. C5 used to average a high double double. Much of last season 15 ppg and 19 rpg was typical!!! And even the last few weeks when Lucas began to play more and Self went with C4, or C3, he was getting nearly that much and sometimes more.

This year's team literally can't get squat out of its 5 position lately.

It's not totally obvious to me how Self has done it. He got Josh to become a stretch four and gave him Perry's 10-15 FGAs/game and 8-10 rpgs. But that doesn't compensate for no C5. It just finally replaced Perry.

Self must have ramped Frank and Devonte's FGAs. Because the composite of Svi and Vick dont appear to have matched Selden's production most games, but I haven't run numbers on that.

It's quite a stunning slight of hand by Self to have pulled this off.

It surely has helped to have Frank improve from 38% 3pt to a ridiculous 51%. And Devonte, who has seemed quiet for long stretches has weighed in with timely bursts of treys for sure.

Whatever, quite a remarkable season so far.

I am not sure which would be more exciting: waiting to find out who would win a competitive tournament, or waiting to find out who would be selected to win an entertainment tournament.

As a child, I used to feel somewhat the same before an all star wrestling match between The Ox and Sonny Meyers, before my father explained to me it was all fake.

Appearances being what they have been the last few years, I can't tell for 100% sure which kind of tournament to expect, so I have decided to embrace the apparent conceivability of either and ask for board rat predictions of both eventualities.

So: make your predictions here for a real champion arrived at by a competitive process and a selected Entertainment Champion.

Either one would involve thrills and the unknown.

Rock Chalk!!!
