Hey folks, its stressful to struggle with KU football. But, let's remain friendly here. Differences of opinion are fine. Welcome even. But, let's just let everyone comment and move on without getting personal, please. There's only about 5 of us here. We can't afford to lose anyone.
@Texas-Hawk-10 I would like to see MacVittie play two series, but maybe he's still hurt from game 1.
Only 146 yds gained in the first half. 1/6 on 3rd downs, 0/2 on 4th. Pooka held to 35 yds on 6 carries. But, hey, not TO's. That's improvement.
@Texas-Hawk-10 So do MacVittie or Mile Kendrick give us a chance to win? No, so why not play Daniels and let him gain the experience we need for next year.
Ouch. I'm watching on hulu and I saw the Baylor score first on the ESPN website, then two plays later on hulu. OUCH, OUCH.
I think Daniels is doing fine. Stay with him coach.
I miss the days when we could see who was on the site during a game. Remember all the little avatars across the bottom. Now, it feels like only four of us are here.
Coach Miles ignoring the mask requirement. That would cost him $100,000 in the NFL.
Nice start. Poooooooooooooka!
Upset Saturday. I'm so glad that we have college football. What in the hell would all of us be doing this afternoon without football?
I'm betting that MacVittie starts again. He played with poise. The O-line should be much better tonight.
Does that seem about right? I'm expecting a much better outing tonight. Those first two TO's on the first two series set the tone for a loss against CC. It will help that KU has played a game, whereas Baylor has had cancellations. Tonight is our turn for a couple of breaks. I say the score will be closer that the Bears think going in.
@Marco But, Mahomes can't keep running the ball like he did in the second half against the Chargers. Mahomes ran the ball 6 times to Clyde's 10 rushes. I know Mahome's rushes were just taking advantage of what the defense was giving up, but the half billion dollar man can't be lost to a hard tackle on a rushing play.
Thank you for the "Clyde" moniker; I've been using variations of his last name, all of which take too long to type. So, Clyde it is. The Chiefs have to rush Clyde more than 10 times a game.
Does anyone else get the impression that Coach Miles is disconnected and unenthusiastic about this team? His tv interview before the CC game was embarrassing. He couldn't think of much to say and seldom looked at the camera. While I don't like over-enthusiastic statements and hyperbole, it would be nice for a head coach to talk up his team with some confidence. The interview reminded me of Charlie Weis and his downbeat, ready to slit his wrists interviews with the media.
ESPN stats for the CC game shows the QB ratings as: Kendrick 27.6, MacVittie 33.9 and Daniels 18.8. Since Kendrick had the most snaps against CC, I suggest starting him and letting him play the entire first half, no matter what mistakes he makes. Then make adjustments at half time.
No. 56 Ben Niemann is a back up linebacker who played a lot against Houston. I thought he was terrible the first game, but didn't see him in the second game because I was at a sports bar and my old eyes can't come close to identifying players by number due to screen distance. ESPN stats say he had 9 tackles/5 solo against the Chargers, so maybe he's alright or getting better. The Chiefs will have to play much better to compete with the Ravens.
@jayballer67 The Chiefs were flat or overconfident.
Two more things, I don't think the Chiefs want their half billion dollar QB leading the team in rushing yardage. The Chiefs are 3 point dogs next week for Monday Night Football. Can't wait.
Well, that was fun. But, with 90 yards of penalties against the Chiefs and 40 against the Chargers, the refs seemed to be throttling the Chiefs' offense. I wonder if the Chiefs aren't getting overconfident and just believing that the offense will always be able to score at the end to win the game.
Well, this should be fun. Everyone is raving about the new stadium. Anyone worried the Chiefs may be looking ahead to the Ravens? I thought Edwards-'elaire looked a bit like Barry Sanders.
@Texas-Hawk-10 Hey #10, I know you're use to my complaints about the pass down the line of scrimmage that never gains anything and last week resulted in the first quarter fumble. But, I see that we are once again using the pause handoff between the QB and RB where they stand together for a second to see who should take the ball. I guess you'd call that an option because the QB may keep it and run or hand off. What I hate is that when the offensive line is already getting beaten on each play by the the mighty CC D-line, that stupid pause just lets the defensive line get a couple more yards deeper into our backfield to easily blow the play up. I'm sure our o-line will get better, but do you agree the backfield pause by the QB is a liability now?
@Texas-Hawk-10 I suffer from the same damn optimism every year: Wow, we could win this next game if..... . Then, we proceed to screw up the next game too. Rinse, repeat.
So, next Saturday's game with Baylor is off too? I doubt a team can recover in a week to be healthy enough to play the next week. Jeez, what a situation.
@nuleafjhawk Yep, 0 wins this year seems likely. But, teams improve and in one or two games a team will get some breaks, like CC did last Saturday that put the team in a position for an upset. I'm reminded of the Boston College game last year. Where the hell did that performance come from?
Macvittie was doing fine; why in the hell change QBs?
Tough start. Everything working on offense for the chickens.
I can't believe the offense started with that same BS pass down the line of scrimmage for no gain.
Is there anything to gain by OU playing Miss St? Just a track meet. At the half, OU 359 yds. Miss St 37 yds.
ESPN doesn't show the OU game being televised anywhere. wth? I watched Rattler on QB1 and was hoping to get an early look at him. ESPN2 has South Ala v. Tulane at 6:30. I would sure think OU would draw more viewers.
I'm very thankful that the Big 12 is going forward with the season. Football and college basketball are my number 1 and 2 sources of entertainment.
But, I'm disheartened by the reports that Coach Miles plans to platoon MacVittie and Kendrick. Why oh why can't KU recruit a quality starting QB? Most other programs have quality second and third string QBs who would be major upgrades at KU. I'm looking forward to an improved O-line and a quality running game. If we may add to that a QB who will make the simple passes to one of the several quality and experienced receivers we put on the field, our offense could be improved from last year. If our defense can't successfully shut down the mean chickens, it will be a long year ahead. I'm greatly looking forward to tonight's game and really hope for at least a two TD margin of victory.
Well I checked some of the odds maker sites and it seems KU is favored by 4.5. Some of the meager reports about the team indicate the O Line will be improved. Hopefully, KU will establish a running offense, then get the mystery QB some open throws. Jeez, I have no idea what to expect Saturday. Pooka left, Pooka right, Pooka up the middle?
I watched parts of the Austin Peay/Central Ark game last weekend, so I hope many football fans who are missing football around the country will watch our CC game at 9 on FS1. Now let's just hope that KU fields an interesting offensive team. I sure don't want another repeat of last year's game where we scored on our first possession and then were shut out the rest of the game by CC.
I wonder how many fans will be on the hill for the CC game? I assume the public address announcer will be the same as though there were fans in the stands, so anyone outside the stadium will somewhat be able to follow along. Sit on the hill, six feet apart, wear a mask, and watch the FS1 broadcast on the smartphone; that's not a bad way to spend a Saturday night in Lawrence.
I'm looking forward to what Coach Miles can put on the field against CC. I enjoyed watching highschool football on the teli last Friday, so I'll find a way to endure no fans in the stands against Coastal. But, we had better win.
@bskeet My comment was limited to my very narrow consideration of all the sports broadcast time devoted to fall college football and the vastly fewer number of teams/games that will be available to be shown. When KU plays its 10 games (glass half full), the many sports stations that will still broadcast college football will have to show us all across the country, instead of regionally. Instead of Korean baseball and corn hole tournaments, I hope those many TV hours will show winning KU football. I wasn't trying to predict the additonal costs associated with virus protection. Really, I was just imagining that with many fewer college football games being played and the nation's vast appetite for college football, KU games should be broadcast many more hours across the entire country. Big 12 games should be shown on all the prime networks every Saturday afternoon and night.
@Texas-Hawk-10 How much more money will the teams that do play this fall make from television broadcasts? I don't know if this is all good, but KU's games will be on all the prime stations playing in all the sports bars and homes in America. I assume most Big 10, PAC 12, etc. fans will still watch the games that are being broadcast. That's going to be a lot of viewers who otherwise would have been watching only their conference's games now watching SEC and Big 12 games because that's all that's on.
Whether it's the fancy dogs of Southern Illinois or the mean chickens of Coastal Carolina, I just hope KU plays football this fall. Test all the athletes in the days leading up to the game and on game day. The risk of exposure during the outdoor games seems less than going into a restaurant or store where only half of the visitors are wearing masks and none have been tested. For the college athletes who want to play, as long as reasonable precautions are taken, I don't see how the risk of contracting the virus during practices and games is higher than what everyone is choosing to do every day. I certainly encourage athletes and their parents to make the best choices on an individual basis about whether to play or not. I won't criticize any athlete for making their own choice. Athletes and their families are already making the far more difficult choice of whether to even play football, given the risk of brain injury.
@Texas-Hawk-10 I'll be fine with Big 12 games only. Just give me some football but keep it safe for the players and staff.
@kjayhawks I'm especially interested to see if Coach Dearmon focuses more on our running game this year. Doesn't KU have to highlight the talents of Pooka Williams? I see that Torry Locklin is now listed as a running back on the roster. Jeez I hope these guys get to play this fall.
By scheduling the quick replacement game and setting it earlier, our guys get to start practicing much sooner. For now, I'm going to ignore all the clairvoyant's predicting the end of all sports and just enjoy the anticipation of the beginning of college football.
After barely getting by Indiana State in our opener last year (24-17) and noticing that the fancy dogs beat Indiana State 23-14, this appears to be a more difficult game than New Hampshire. The dogs were a rush oriented offense with a total of 3,047 yds to 2222 yds passing. They return a 5th year senior at QB, #3 Lyles and Sophmore Javon Williams #15 who rushed for 1065 yds and had 17 TDs.
I'll take any form of college football that KU may put on the field. Fans in the stands, cardboard cutouts or empty seats, whatever just start throwing the pigskin around as safely as humanly possible.
How many fans have watched the super bowl game again during this horrible time of no sports? Mahomes really didn't have a great game. The 40 yard pass to Hill that started the 3 touchdown comeback was so late that Hill had to wait on it. If you haven't watched it again, I found the full game on You Tube. It's crazy how late in the game the Chiefs scored their 3 final TD's. If you haven't watched it again in the last 24 hours, just watch the last 7 minutes to get your sports fix for the day. Yes, I'm desperate for anything sports related this summer. The next season of Last Chance U is supposed to air on Netflix on July 28, with the new season of QB 1 starting in August.
I wonder if the schools that abandoned the Big 12 have any regrets. Colorado has done well, but the rest have not been competitive at the same levels they enjoyed in the Big 12. I'll admit that I've enjoyed watching our former foes struggle. Please, please, please figure out a way to safely launch college football this fall.
Thanks to all who post here and follow the recruiting wars. But, may I suggest that you refrain from using pronouns, "he, him, etc." I just scan your most recent posts and often can't tell who you are discussing. I see that most of the pronouns are used in response to another post, but it would be appreciated if you would use names. Many thanks. Here's to hoping we have football this fall.
@Texas-Hawk-10 I guess we can't expect a promising highschool QB to look at KU until our coaching staff consistenly puts a competent offensive line on the field. So, let's get started with OL recruitment and development.
@Texas-Hawk-10 Any thoughts on who will start at QB? The pantry appears empty to me. I was hoping for a surprise transfer to help us out.
Is Torry Locklin still on the team? During last year's spring practice he showed some good old will to score that reminded me of Reesing. My VCR wtih the spring practice recording went bellyup, so I can't go back and watch him very easily.
It's interesting that the Williamson allegations of NCAA violations only arise because Williamson sued to terminate his marketing agreement. The allegations of improper compensation while at Duke have nothing to do with the marketing contract issues, but the lawyers defending the marketing company are choosing to push Williamson's face in the dirt by raising the allegations over improper compensation while at Duke. Some lawyers call it playing hardball and justify the tactic as doing whatever is necessary to win for their client. I'll bet Williamson's lawyers never warned him that he was openning up himself and his family to scrutiny (under oath) by suing to get out of the five year marketing contract.
Hopefully, by 2025 KU will be able to put a team on the field that we may all be proud of. I'm really worried about the QB position this year. I'm concerned that after a couple of games this season, I'm really going to wish Carter Stanley had another year of eligibility.
@Crimsonorblue22 So McCarthy is still open? I thought all the student housing was closed and students were forced to go home. If he's at McCarthy, I'm happy for him.
I wonder where our Dok has gone during this time of mandated home isolation? I'm sure McCarthy Hall is closed. He most certainly has plenty of supporters, but it's not the same as having a family home to be at during this weird period of time. If anyone is close enough to Dok to know where he's riding out the pandemic, please give me a shout.
