Interesting thoughts on OAD's and the lessening of emotional attachment to a school's fan base. I cherish the opportunity to watch beloved players like Perry, Frank and Landen grow into successful young men. I really, really enjoy the post-game interviews that give us a small insight into who these men really are. Like always, RCJH.
We are going to need Lightfoot, Coleby and Vick to play strong defense and contribute something on offense on Wednesday. Lucas avoiding early fouls will be a giant factor. I'm really impressed how well Jackson is playing in the paint. I think KU will be fine on Wednesday after getting past such a difficult week last week.
I too thought the game was way to close to leave before the end. The UK fans gave up on their team even though it became a four point game. When Frank missed the front end of the one and one, I thought it was going to get very interesting. The UK fans giving up on their team is just another example of why KU has the best basketball program in the country: The best coach, the best players and the best fans.
Are we such a good free throw shooting team, that there is no benefit to at least being available to try to rebound a miss? Clearly, the answer is no. When Frank missed the front end of the one and one, how big would a rebound have been? When Kentucky got within 4, I kept thinking about Frank's missed FT and all our guys standing outside the 3 point line with no chance to rebound the miss.
How funny did Kentucky look though with 4 players standing by the lane all by themselves during our free throws? Did they think they needed all 4 to rebound against only the shooter? Hilarious. But seriously, we need to rebound on free throws. A rebounded free throw or two may be the difference against the Bears or some other close game.
My takeaway is that Coach inserted the zone at the right times, Frank, Josh and Landen played like champs and the bench played just enough defense to pull out a great win. There is nothing better than watching Kentucky fans leaving at the 2 minute mark. A glorious sight it was.
Svi and Vick need to find ways to contribute much more: Svi's 8 pts and 2 rbs in 28 minutes is less than I expected. Vick's 2 pts and 3 rebs in 17 minutes must improve.
The media gave all the accolades to Josh, which he certainly deserved. Josh's 10 rebs. really shows the motor that Coach Self saw when he was recruiting Josh. Josh's back to back 3's to open the second half were really the push KU needed to get a tough win on the road. But, my game ball goes to Landen, who is our rock in the paint. Thirteen points on 6/6 shooting makes me think he should have taken more shots. Landen is still the victim of phantom foul calls, but has the maturity to play through it. Great win that was hyped all day on all sports channels. Now, let's pound the Bears on Wednesday. RCJH
So were Josh's two 3's to start the second half the biggest shots by a KU freshman ever? RCJH
The failures I see after the W Virginia loss are:
1. Allowing 47 second half points;
2. Lucas and Bragg only scoring 4 points;
3. Only 7 bench points; and
4. Out scored at FT line by 13 points: 19/6.
Terrific offense by Jackson, Mason and Graham, but this game shows our guards can't win road games with just their offense. Yes, the refs certainly contributed to the loss as is always the case in Morgantown. But, our defense must improve. W Virginia played great; better than I've seen them play. Hopefully, our guys will regroup and Svi, Vick, Lucas, and Bragg will play better against Kentucky.
@Crimsonorblue22 But the clock malfunction only gets called during our offense. Seems a little suspicious
If I told you before the game we would only have 5 TO's at the half wouldn't everyone have been happy?
Mitch playing like a champ
Uh, maybe someone should stay on Adrian.
Are we having fun yet. Wow, what a competitive game. Stupid clock.
lightfoot with the reject. He came to play in Morgantown
3ball cannons are firing
@JayhawksandChill Welcome aboard. Post away.
Is this the game where we see Mason, Graham, Vick, Svi and Jackson on the floor together for extended periods of time? Lucas is fine against the press and I like that his experience brings a cool hand. And, Svi, Jackson and Vick have been prone to turnovers lately during frantic play. Whew, this is going to be fun.
I say the refs in Morgantown will whistle Jackson for at least two phantom fouls during this game. The man just can't get a break from these Big 12 refs: He got called for a foul while standing flatfooted against Texas when the opposing player tripped over Jackson's foot. That was a travel, right? Jeez. Clearly, I need to yell a little louder at the refs from my home. RCJH
I share your excitement for the epic battle on Tuesday. I hope our 3 ball cannons are blazing away against the Mountianeers. Come away from Morgantown with a W and the Big 12 championship is within our control. Still quite losable though, given how closely every conference team plays us. I say just take each game as it comes and don't look ahead. This will be a fun week for Jayhawk fans. RCJH
Allen is 17 and 15 so far.
Yes, Carlton is playing much better. I like it.
Another career night for an opposing player. What is the deal with our defense? Allen looks like the best big in college ball.
12 steals, but 12 TO's. Lucas 0 points.
I'm still waiting on Josh to have a breakout B12 game. I thought it would be today. Guess not.
Allen is playing with confidence and skill today. He looks like a completely different player than in other games this year.
Jackson is awfully quiet with just 5 points. Lucas 0 points.
We have 8 TO's to their 10.
But when we're bad, we're bad. And unlucky on these turnover calls.
Vick and Bragg with the opportunity to show their games.
Yep, we could be sitting Frank at this point. Let Vick take more of the minutes.
6 TO's by Texas already. RCJH
Great start, except Josh picked up another early foul.
Nice seats. Enjoy the game. RCJH
I'm trying to post a picture of the young woman cleverly placed behind the KU bench when we played in Austin a couple of years ago. If the intent was to distract our players, it didn't seem to work. But, she sure got a lot of camera time and made a lasting impression with me.
My preference is to concentrate on our game with Texas and let the rest of the league sort itself out. But, yes I do root against W Virginia and Baylor and will be an ardent purple fan Saturday.
For the record, I'm against all court and field storming. Win or lose, the players deserve the respect of the spectators. Yes, you are just spectators; you didn't contribute in any way to the victory. You just watched it.
The best way to avoid storming is to win the road games and stay classy at home. The February 6 game against K State is the game I think will be out of control. I saw a lot of posts about the hatred at Hilton, but I don't think it compares to the hostility and hatred that will be on display at Bramlage. It still infuriates me that a mere spectator bumped shoulders with Jamari in Manhattan. The Big 12 must protect the opposing players and coaches. It won't take much for an opposing player, who just suffered an emotional loss to lose his temper and react to an out of control fan. I won't blame the player; I'll blame the fan and the Big 12.
@jayballer54 He tripped on Josh's stationary right foot. The correct call when the ball handler fell was a travel. It's weird that Josh continues to draw a couple of incorrect fouls each game. I call it the Josh jinx. It started before he picked up the technical foul calls.
Frank is always going to be one of my all time favorite Jayhawks. His confidence and ability to get to the rim are my favorite characteristics. As point guards go, Jacque Vaughn is always my KU point guard of reference. I was always inspired by the bounce and pizazz Jacque brought to the PG position. Who remembers that little skip step Jacque used to make a bounce pass assist to a teammate?
Landen is being interviewed. He's great. Smart man.
Josh to the bench when its foul time
Just not closing this out. Turnovers and more turnovers
Huge back to back buckets by Landen and Frank for the 10 point lead. RCJH
@BShark This is the line up now. Coach is only playing 7.
16 bench points so far, Much better bench play.
On the jump shot, Bragg was at the free throw line instead of under the rim. So no one to rebound.
Jackson with 4 pts, Bragg 10. Who are these guys?
Banging and playing now. Great game.
Lots of contact in the paint. Now, this is basketball. Refs letting the guys play.
Lucas needs to hold onto the ball. He's had several tipped out of his hands. But, he's having a good game. 10 pts, 5 boards
Devonte hasn't scored since the early part of the game. 6 pts.
@Crimsonorblue22 Except Bragg wasn't even looking for a pass. It went off his chest. Whoops, on the replay Bragg caught it but it was tipped away. My apologies to Mr. Bragg.
Josh on Burton, kind of.
