@Texas-Hawk-10 I support your optimism and hope we win at least 4 games next year. The kicker from Oklahoma, Liam Jones could help us next year. Really, improvement next year will be entirely dependent on whether we get much better play from our quarterback. Our trio did some good things this year, just not nearly enough and they had way to many turnovers. I also hope Coach Beaty hires an experienced offensive coordinator. We will benefit from much better play calling.
Stanley's weak 4th quarter fumble summarizes the year for the offense. I'm thrilled with the defense and know it will continue to improve next year. The offense just isn't going to get better until we locate a real D1 quarterback. I do appreciate all the effort and sacrifices by all our players. RCJH
Only 5 shot attempts by the four bigs who played,. Five shots in the 45 minutes logged by Bragg, Lucas, Coleby and Doke. Lucas took no shots in his ten minutes; he did have 2 rebounds. The four bigs accounted for 8 rebounds. Jackson had 11 rebounds. Why aren't the paint players coming to play? Are they boycotting? Is it fatigue? Coleby got playing time ahead of Lightfoot. At least Lightfoot brings energy when he plays. Why didn't Lightfoot play? This team, mainly the big guys has a long way to go before it's tournament ready.
We will see if Coach emphasizes feeding the post. We certainly have the experience at guard to do this. It was pretty funny watching the freshman pass to the post. He just about took someone's head off.
@HawkChamp It would be nice to blow out a SEC team. I don't see our defense improving tonight because everyone must be tired from playing so many games and traveling. I expect a game like last night: close until the last 8 minutes.
The UAB box score shows our four bigs only took 10 shots, with Bragg accounting for 6. So, a decent part of the inside scoring problem is the bigs just aren't taking enough shots, particularly Lucas. When Coach Self wants to fix that, we will see more effort to get them the ball in scoring position and more shots by the big guys. I think Coach is watching our guys play for now and letting the players figure some things out. Josh is getting a few things figured out. WOW. RCJH
Georgia reminds me of Siena with most of their scoring coming from a 6'8" forward and a small point guard. Georgia's #1 Maten scores 21 PPG, while their Mason-esque guard, #30 Frazier scores 19 PPG. So far, coach Self has seemed content to let the guards shoot mostly uncontested threes as long as we have a bit of a lead. Siena's Wright was able to launch threes all night. Let's get those dogs tonight. RCJH
What I noticed was not much effort by our ball handlers to get the ball into the paint to a forward in scoring position. Landen's only basket came from a nice over the top pass-the kind we've used for years. Just one though. I don't know if it's because the forwards aren't getting posted up or if the guards just aren't looking to drop the pass down low.
Also, the defenses are still playing us like Perry was in the line up: as soon as the ball goes into the paint, at least three defenders attack the ball.
I 'm more disappointed with our defense, than the lack of front court scoring. When the bigs get position and the guards look to get them the ball, our scoring will improve. The ease in which the opponents are scoring frustrates me. But, we're playing quality opponents early this year, which should help later if we ever get a couple of back to back days for practice. Geez, all games and no practice. How's this young team supposed to get better.
@wissox I still hear it from KU haters about the orange bowl team: "hey, the didn't play Oklahoma or Texas." My lame response is "Well, we played the teams on our schedule."
Doke! I say it like Homer Simpson, but finish with the k.
@Bwag I see the Blazer D sagging on the post players.
@Bwag But no one has been able to get a pass into the post. Has Lucas even touched the ball?
Thanks for keeping us updated. More linemen please. RCJH
I hope one of our quarterbacks separates himself from the others early so Coach Beaty doesn't suffer the difficulty of picking a starter next year. As we reach the end of the season and after watching three different starters, I guess they were all equally mediocre showing why coach couldn't pick one ahead of the rest. As always, I will look forward to next year's team with optimism and patience.
@jaybate-1.0 And we may always count on you for fun insight. Fecal-canned. I love it.
@Texas-Hawk-10 I thought I read that the Big 12 required a certain level of nonconference opponent and that members could no longer use the K State method of scheduling 3 weak opponents to pad their wins. I recall K State being forced to schedule teams like USC a few years ago. Regarding tickets, we paid $40 per seats at the goal line and $60+ per seat for the decent seats between the goal line and 20.. I saw that tickets were up to $85 per seat for Texas. We need fans in the stands. If ticket prices are keeping people from coming to the games we need to lower them until our program is more in demand.
If a poster here could be head coach for one game, who would you vote for? What coaching changes would we see? Just for fun now, no serious criticism intended.
I sure thought the Texas defender intercepted the ball in our end zone the play before the KU field goal that tied the game. He had the ball all the way to the ground, then it was knocked loose. That sure could have gone against us. Watch it again if you can. The Texas player had the ball and was down before it came loose. Also, the targeting penalty was in heavy traffic and could easily have been missed by officials. We were very close to losing this one and quite fortunate to win it. RCJH
@KUSTEVE Only 5 degrees of separation from the playoffs. Now that's progress.
@BShark You mean Coach Self doesn't read and implement my posts immediately ? Bummer. Do you have his cell number? He probably wants my input. Honestly, my opinions really only matter to me; not even my wife pays any attention to them.
@BeddieKU23 So let a Siena center score on Doke, that's how he's going to learn what to expect and how to defend D1 centers. Benching him against Siena was a mistake.
@dylans Doke needs playing time, not bench time. Yell at him a bit, then put him back in and then yell at him again when he screws up on the floor. He's going to make many mistakes, but will learn from making them on the court, not sitting on the bench. Put the big guy in until he fouls out, would ya. We are going to need him in February and March. RCJH
Our win was accomplished through smoke and mirrors. Stanley at QB is just more of the same offensive ineptness. But, we were way past due for a couple of breaks to go our way. The targeting call paved the way for the Wyman field goal that sent us to overtime. Without that penalty, we probably would of come up short yet again.
It pains me to see the empty stands. The Big 12 needs to let us schedule an easier nonconference schedule and reduce ticket prices so we may rebuild fan interest. The ABC broadcast of this game with Texas struggling and our empty stadium is a huge negative for the Big 12, not just Kansas and Texas. If you haven't been to Lawrence for a football game lately, I can tell you it's still a lot of fun. We don't need a new stadium, we just need more fans in the stands while KU rebuilds. RCJH
Because I've felt the let down from a big loss, I tend to sympathize with Texas, rather than delight in their struggles. I only feel glee when Missouri struggles. I miss the national contenders that Texas used to field each year. I hate that the Big 12 is on the outside looking in of the playoffs.
@Texas-Hawk-10 If that's what it takes-yes please. JK We played poorly, but Texas played worse. 6 turnovers by Texas, the last was an interception by Mike Lee in overtime. Finally, finally, finally.
Posters: May we please let other poster have their say without taking offense or feeling the need to correct or ridicule someone else. I participate here just for fun and to gain insight and knowledge. Whenever I encounter a snarky post or one that is over the top, I just move on. Everyone is entitled to have a say here, right; I don't have any right to dictate what's being said. On the other KU site, whenever I read a post from a known downer, I just skip it. It's easy and it allows me to read the posts that make this fun. Ok, lecture over. Sorry for taking the soap box this evening after such a great football victory. I wish I could follow the crazies with the goal post to Potter's Lake. RCJH
@drgnslayr I've been demanding a limit on Frank's minutes. I know it's difficult; we really needed Frank vs. Siena or that game could have been a loss. I see the solution as more playing time for Vick. He is aggressive and making the most of his minutes. Let Vick loose will ya Coach. RCJH
@BShark Very talented image my friend.
@Kcmatt7 Nice call Matt. The cold weather very well may have affected the Texas players. RCJH
@Kcmatt7 said in Prediction Time:
I'm predicting a win guys. UT in sub 50 degree weather always struggles.... Them boys don't like the cold and always get a slow start in Lawrence.
Beaty is due for a win. I do think he works hard. And at some point hard work is due to pay off. This was the game I looked at on the schedule as a possible win.
Recipe for a win if you ask me. We got a taste of what a real win might feel like last week. We can feast on a freshmen QB and load the box. If we lose, lets lose playing M2M with them throwing the ball. Don't let them do what they do well. Force them to out talent us.
As for us being able to score more points than them, defense is going to have to put up at least one TD and special teams needs to not suck for one whole game.
Even a blind squirrel finds an acorn every once in a while. Let's get ours tomorrow.
Ok, I'll be the first here to condemn the removal of the goal posts. It's an important win to build on, but there's no need to embarrass ourselves. Our football program has a rich history of success. I'd like to think our fans have a better sense of our successful history. RCJH
@Crimsonorblue22 Thanks, I was able to find in on Cox 22 in Wichita.
@kjayhawks Thanks to everyone for sticking around through all of this. We are a faithful bunch. Jayhawk football fanatics.
Coach Beaty is really emotional in his TV interview. I can't imagine how hard this season has been for him and our football jayhawks.
What a great win for our Seniors. Those guys suffered through an awful lot.
Finally a Big 12 win. Way to go.
Mike Lee for president or at least chancellor
Come on guys, give us Big 12 win number one.
OT. Now here we go.
Another Texas fumble? We can only hope now.
There are more of us chatting than in the stands. JK
Gonzalez just can't be a punt returner. Too many muffs.
If the Texas defense is bad, what may we call our offense? None of our QBs have been able to throw the ball away to avoid a sack.
These 15 yard penalties have got to stop. Our players lack discipline.
I'm trying to watch, but mostly cringing.
What's up with Doke only playing 7 minutes. Prior to the game, I opined that 40 minutes was about right, or until he fouled out. That was before I saw how competitive Siena proved to be. But, Doke needs to play lots of minutes, foul when it doesn't matter so much and make mistakes, but learn, learn, learn. Coach Self is going to need the big guy to win some games down the road. Put him in for heaven's sake. Play the big guy, would ya.
Thanks to the 10 or so fans who are interested enough or brave enough to post here about KU football. I enjoyed the Iowa State game until the last 10 minutes of the game. I guess that's something. We will see today if we have a defense that's still improving or a defense that is just going through the motions. Iowa State has a solid offense and it took over the game in the second half last week. I hope our defense brings speed, good tackling and emotion to the Longhorns today. RCJH
Landen Lucas is doing fine and will be an important contributor to this team. Opposing teams, especially Indiana are collapsing on him every time he gets the ball. I remember a point in the Indiana game when Landen got the ball in the paint and was surrounded by four Hoosiers. He looked like a man trapped in a well. When our guards start hitting some 3's and defenses are forced to focus on other KU players on offense, Landen will get his 10-12 points and 10 rebounds. Our guards have open 3's all the time, but aren't converting yet. Right now, the defensive schemes are focusing on Landen like defenses did last year with Perry.
Our 3 point defense is the same approach we've seen in year's past: defend from inside the 3 point line and see if the other team hits their shots. No one chased Wright until the middle of the second half. We just let him launch uncontested 3's until he got too tired to hit them. I guess that's a defensive strategy. Siena has a really nice team, with the outside/inside play of Wright and Ogunyemi. This was a good game for us; a win we may learn from.
Before we start focusing on the basketball week ahead (3 more games-6 games in 2 weeks; who made this schedule?) or posting more about recent and possible future recruits, it's important to stop and appreciate what we have at KU. Bill Self. I remember the let down when Roy Williams finally took the NC job. I worried that our basketball success would drop a couple of notches, but the exact opposite happened. Coach Self raised the already high profile Coach Williams brought to KU to the top tier nationally and made us the team to beat each year. Thank you, thank you Bill Self. RCJH
Win number 207 for Coach Self.
Wright is going to score 35 because we don't put anyone in his pocket.
