Hoibergs surgery • Apr 18, 2015 02:04 AM

Basketball aside, all prayers to Hoiberg and family. I'd rather be competing on the court than have him in the hospital.

Rock Chalk Mayor and best wishes

@drgnslayr Patience grasshopper...We'll be fine.

Recruiting Rumors • Apr 16, 2015 04:29 AM

@RockChalkinTexas I like his work in the paint. He has a great feel for the paint. He seems to understand his role. I like how he bodies up to players and moves them around. I like his screens. He will be perfect in the hi/lo and pick and role game at KU. I'll take him, Diallo and Ingram. We would pretty much be top 4 or 5 to win NC with this kid.

If Self has this kid on his radar, he must be doubting both Diallo and Thorne.

I'm hearing Cheick Diallo to Kansas??? • Apr 16, 2015 04:14 AM

@Statmachine I like Brown better than Newman. Brown outplayed Newman in the McDs AA. I think Newman will be another Selby.

Diallo is all KU. He is not a risk at all. If anyone is a risk, it's Maker. I wouldn't touch Maker at all. Now he seems to be staying put in the 2016 class. My guess is his grades ior ineligibility.

We're fine. I'll take Diallo and Ingram please.

@Lulufulu Ingram mentioned at the McDs AA that Bragg is working him hard.

I'd be ecstatic with Diallo, Thorne, and Ingram...HUGE

I figured he would. I expect him to do great things.

Good choice.

@JRyman It's hard to say. I actually won't blame him either way. However, I looked at DraftExpress and NBADraft. I didn't see Perry at all in the first round. I'd like to know what the "NBA reports" revealed.

I actually found Selden at #45 DraftExpress and #50 NBADraft to the Atlanta Hawks. Cliff was at #35 in the 2015 Mock going to...Philadelphia. Can you imagine if that happened? TRob, Embiid, and Alex?

I think these next few days are mere smoke and mirrors. I hate to admit or think it, but Perry Ellis is gone folks. He would've announced that he's staying another year. If they stay, it's usually pretty quick. In fact most announce after the last game. I think he's using this time to pick an agent. I don't fault him either way.

If Ellis leaves, whoa Nelly. The dominoes are going to fall in place.

@Crimsonorblue22 One good thing...UK already disappointed him by losing the NC, hehe

@Crimsonorblue22 Correct me if I'm wrong, but haven't they pretty much lost all their bigs? Guess what? They need bigs. He is dying for both Diallo and Maker.

Cauley-Stein, gone

Towns, gone

Lyles, gone

Johnson, gone

I think Calipari may be losing his sex appeal with recruits. This next season reminds me of the Nerlens Noel class and team.

240 lbs of Recruiting Space Opened.... • Apr 09, 2015 03:49 AM

@Crimsonorblue22 Gawd, can these players ever get away from the influence of anything UK? Geez

Also, don't look now but Calipari just lost Dakari Johnson too. He's super desperate. He's in the same boat Self was in the year both twins went pro. Remember that?

Great...Diallo is rooming with Skal Labissiere, a UK commit, at the Nike Hoops Summit in Oregon. How did that happen? Hmm...I wonder if WWW has anything to do with picking rooms for players? He's been awfully quiet lately.

Kelly Oubre: A Gambler? • Apr 09, 2015 03:08 AM

Why do I feel for Perry Ellis? Why do I believe he's getting screwed by the NBA? Oh yea, they don't give ratso asso about student athletes. Whew, I'm glad I remembered that. Why do I still feel that Perry's career is beyond salvation regardless of what he does? It's because the NBA dictates to these kids what they must do their first year of college.

If your Perry Ellis or any other top recruit, and you come into a program like KU with a high draft stock, say top 10. You then play your second year because you think an education is important. Unfortunately, the NBA sees it differently. The NBA will demand you leave after the first year while the iron is hot, while you have guaranteed money. But, if you don't, well...sux to be you. Oh and you decide to stay a third year? We'll just make sure that IF you come to the NBA you'll be a guaranteed D leaguer. A player like Ellis inadvertently proves the NBA to be wrong. The NBA doesn't want players, they want products. These players are nothing but assets, products, investments, and $$$$$$$.
BTW- $$$$$$$ is equal to $1,000,000. So, Ellis works hard in college and will now have to pay the high price of a poor draft stock simply because he stayed 3-4 years.

Do you see what the NBA is doing to these players, especially Ellis. They are not the typical NBA player. So, the NBA will discard them like a bad investment. Sorry Perry, you did the right thing for you. Too bad the stupid NBA doesn't appreciate you and reward you by increasing your draft stock. You will be fine and will make money. You'll have to do it the old fashioned way, unlike many of your peers. Your education is the most important investment you'll ever have. An NBA career ends, but an education keeps on giving. You are respected and admired more than you know for your dedication, hard work, and sacrifice to the game. You make this bball fan proud to be a fan of the game.

CLIFF GONE • Apr 08, 2015 02:34 AM

Bragg

Diallo

Maker....Maybe not if we land Thorne

Thorne

Mason

Graham

Selden

Green

Svi

Mari

Lucas

Mickelson

Bonus: Either Ingram or Brown, not necessary, but nice...However nice, Self might want to keep one open just in case that certain transfer player might come along.

CLIFF GONE • Apr 08, 2015 02:11 AM

Cliff is gone and that means our chances for Diallo just got even better.

Chris Mullins who?

Also, I don't want to lose Ellis, but he's stayed three years and well within coming back and finishing his degree. I would think his parents will tell him to declare and then finish his degree. I know he would too.

If we do lose Ellis, I have a wild idea that we land Maker too.

Dook won the NC and that influenced Ingram.

I think the twins are gone regardless of their stock and Newman goes UK.

I'm still not sure where Brown goes. He seems to be a Michigan, UCLA, UK, and KU lean right now.

WE WILL NOT GET ZIMMERMAN. I would be shocked if we land Zimmerman.

The back court is solid. We really don't need anyone at the 1-3. We are jammed at the 1-3. I'm waiting on Selden.

Okay...onto next year.

RCJHGOKU

Who thinks Winslow and Okafor are gone to the NBA? I think they were gone when the buzzer sounded.

@wissoxfan83 I'm not and still pissed. They had this game won and the refs flat bailed dook completely out of this loss. They literally gave them a chance. It was so blatant.

It seems when there are questionable calls in a game of this nature, the refs should be reviewed. They should not be allowed to ref a game of this nature if they blow 1-3 calls. It's awful. I think it should be automatic and refs need to be held accountable. It may not change anything, but they can be held accountable for missed or blown calls. I would even think an investigation could be in order at this point too.

Wisconsin are the Champs in my book.

How about the call out of bounds call against Winslow? That was so obvious a blind person could've made that call right. These refs were terrible and they give college bball a bad name.

The game ball goes to...

Officials: Pat Driscoll, Joe DeRosa, Michael Stephens - WORST OFFICIATED GAME EVER...CONGRATS LOSERS.

Sorry, no race intended but the black ref called fouls against Wisonsin all night long on dook's end...OUTRAGEOUS...every call was for Dook...I am so PISSED right now, I could scream.

The refs had their way with Wisconsin and it really got them. Did you see the last shot by Dekker? It was a foul on the wrist...NO CALL...They turn around and call a foul on Wisconsin against Winslow....Good God what a terrible game.

@VailHawk EVERYTIME TOO...UNBELIEVEABLE

Winslow and Okafor gone...Pretty boy Jones and the other duke pretties will stay another year.

Queenie Cook won't make it in the NBA neither will Jones.

@VailHawk Did you see the fouls? Wisconsin 12+ and Duke 6?

HORRIBLE

TERRIBLE OFFICIALS, WORST GAME OF THE SEASON...I knew dook would resort to their tacky fouls to get something. The refs bailed them out all second half and kept them in the game.

What? I'm still figurin' his'n and you'rn.

Calipari to be inducted to the HOF! • Apr 06, 2015 12:35 AM

@approxinfinity I've been around it most of my life and played bball with many in that culture, but it's still wrong. I don't care what context it is used. This is why our country has the problems that it has today. We tolerate it within certain "contexts." It's not acceptable at all.

Let's be clear about Harrison's comment or context. He meant for it to be derogatory. He was mad, angry, disappointed, or whatever, but this is where you grow up and show your maturity. It's time to grow up. He's a sophomore in college on a big stage. He has to control his mouth at all times and watch his circumstances.

This is true of KU players too. I don't buy into their age being a factor. They have to grow up and there are many doing really well regardless of their age. Perry Ellis is a great kid. He has beliefs, values, and ultimately behaviors that keep him solid. He's a mature young man, and recognizes his role at this point. The Harrisons might want to watch other players like Ellis and learn.

Ellis is a role model on and off the court.

This is funny. I played a pick-up game with some black bball players in South Carolina. One was 6-5 and another around 6-7. I was a baller and they liked me really well. I had nothing against them whatsoever. One of them was from San Diego, CA. He lived in Arizona. The other was from San Antonio, TX. They liked and respected me. We were really good.

Here's the problem. We would score and I would make a comment by calling them "boy." For example, way to go boy or good job boy. I meant absolutely nothing by it and they knew it too. However, one one of them very casually and respectfully reminded me that it wasn't a good term to use with them. I thought about it and immediately realized what he was saying. I quickly stopped calling them 'boy' and found a more suitable term or term of endearment. The point was, he was right, the name or title I chose to use was wrong and inappropriate. It didn't matter the context. It wasn't a very encouraging term. They were on my team too. We won 10 games together. We were a good team. We all had beliefs, values and behaviors that allowed us to be the best of friends after it was all over.

In Case Anyone Keeps Count... • Apr 06, 2015 12:12 AM

This is what I like about Bill Self recruiting. There is an upside and downside to his recruiting strategy. The upside is that Self only gets what he needs. He doesn't necessarily recruit for numbers like UK. For example, we could use a solid 3, but it's not imperative. We all agree a 5 or big 4 is necessary. This is why I've been hoping for Diallo and maybe Brown or Ingram.

The downside is every other blue blood is after the same recruits. Self will have to recruit the elite, but have a few other options too. For example, look at some jucos or maybe some transfers. We should be ok for next season.

If you look at Dook, they have a nice mix. Tyus Jones at the pg. Winslow at the 3. Okafor at the 5. They have a nice returning group in Cook, Plumlee, Murphy, Jones, Jefferson, and Grayson is a good long-term player.

I thought our 2012 mix was pretty solid, except not having BMac or even Traylor hurt. I really wonder "what if" with BMac and Traylor at that time. I wonder if 2012 was our year, but our circumstances beat us rather than UK.

Calipari to be inducted to the HOF! • Apr 05, 2015 09:06 PM

@approxinfinity Wigs will school both Harrisons if they ever step foot onto an NBA court. They aren't even in the same league of character or level of play as Wigs. Wigs is in a league of his own.

Wigs is making history in the NBA. The Harrisons are way behind.

As to the link, it doesn't show good judgement on the part of the Harrisons. They obviously still have a problem. The strange thing about their problem, it's inter-racism. They are talking about their own race? How does this seem right?

link text ↗

What Stephen A. Smith states the obvious and is against the action, but he defends Harrison. He then mentions Kaminsky saying it and then defends the comment. Again, Smith should be against it regardless of one's race. Eliminate that ugly word from all people, black or white. Smith said, if Kaminsky said it (being white) we would have a different problem? What is wrong with this picture?

Let's be clear Stephen A. Smith, racism is always wrong. Don't justify it. You are promoting it. You are a sports analyst. Stand up and be accounted. Don't cave to a culture or race. Stand your ground and detest it at every instance, no matter who says it. It's intolerable.

Calipari to be inducted to the HOF! • Apr 05, 2015 08:57 PM

@Shanghai_RCJH I hate to say it, but UK should be seriously concerned if and when Calipari leaves. This should sober them to at least think twice, but in the end, they are UK and will continue in their old ways.

Win at all costs.

They will demand Calipari's head on a platter if the program vacates his seasons. It will be nasty. I foresee UK taking him to court and demanding the NCAA reprimand him with some coach's death penalty that he never coach in college again.

Calipari to be inducted to the HOF! • Apr 05, 2015 08:54 PM

@approxinfinity I believe so. I'm just tired of the double standard.

Near the end of the question, a live microphone picked up Harrison muttering "F--- that n----" as his hand covered his mouth.

We will not effectively eliminate racial slurs, or racism, until both races are intolerant of such slurs. The community has to address it more so than any other community in order to end it.

Folks like Harrison must be addressed with equal intensity and discipline if this is to be taken seriously.

Uncommited recruits... • Apr 05, 2015 08:31 PM

@Lulufulu I'm so sick of the blatant negative slurs and then the perp simply "apologizes." It's ridiculous. If this is the case, people should be able to rant and voice all kinds of negativity toward someone, but then if we are caught, just say, "I apologize." It's ridiculous. In the end they suffer. Their reputation as a person suffers.

I haven't heard too many UK fans spouting their mouths too much over this loss or the aftermath of the negative comments. IF I were a UK fan, and I'm not (thank God), I'd be outraged over this crap. I'd basically be demanding the player be booted off the team regardless. I'd want to save my teams stellar reputation, but we are talking about UK. Remember, they want to win at all costs.

I knew that slap by Lyles was going to revisit them. Also, if I were Calipari, I PULL Lyles, but he didn't. Don't give Calipari a pass as a coach for making these players sit in the post game presser. He was as responsible. He should sit Lyles butt on the bench for the remainder of the game. But, they win at all costs.

Folks, this is sweet in so many ways and whats funny, UK made it even more so after the game with their attitudes and terrible sportsmanship.

@Wigs2 No, Tyler is jumping to the league. He's taking his King Tyler skills to the next level. He's tired of living off Bill and Cindy. Time to earn his keep. He's going to support the family for a change.

We've fallen off Newman big time.

Brown and Ingram are so hard to read. I think Diallo is pretty much KU. I think the Mullins hire just sealed their fate.

I'd take Thorne just for some extra depth. Don't look now folks but if we get Diallo and Thorne, we'll be so big and deep with Lucas and Mickelson. Don't even mention experience. It's almost like combining UK's size with Wisconsin's experience...yikes. Our back court is going to be solid if we bring in either Brown, Ingram or maybe Newman.

I want to do the math. I've lost track of the paper. So...we began the year with 1 to give. CF left and that made it 2. Now with Oubre gone we should have 3? Bragg gets 1. Now we have 2? This would allow for Diallo and Thorne. I really don't want to lose anymore. I like the experience of our back court this year with mostly juniors? We have a promising and solid soph in Svi. I'm giddy.

If my math serves me correctly, we may not be able to land Brown or Ingram and definitely not Newman. We need Ellis to stay. If we do lose Ellis, unlikey, but possible, I want to invest in a marquee name like Brown to replace Oubre. Wait, wait, wait...I forgot my sleeper in Selden. If he leaves, there's the extra paper for either Brown or Ingram. I hope Bragg is working them well. Ingram actually said Bragg was working him hard. He may spoil the crystal ball prediction. I'm actually fine with or without Selden.

I just remembered Alex's situation. He would get us another recruit. I don't think Loangate is going to work out at all.

Shaka Smart in BigXII • Apr 05, 2015 04:10 AM

Bring it Shaka. You ain't at VCU anymore my friend. Welcome to the B12. I hope the guys heard what Shaka said at his presser.

I hope the recruits heard it too. They need to understand that when a B12 coach or player makes a comment like Shaka, it's time to take him to court, Kansas style. Shaka thinks he's going to pick up where he left off in 2011? LOL I wish the team could hear and watch Rio and Collins when they played Jay Wright and Nova and destroyed them. I loved it when Rio went to Wright and said, "Watch this..." He then alley ooped to Shady for a dunk. Collins told Wright to "sit down." Oh how I wish we had players that could talk, play, and win like that especially against Shaka and UT.

UK deserved to lose and they are now due a down season after this fluke season.

Uncommited recruits... • Apr 05, 2015 03:49 AM

Oh what a dilema for Calipari. He will push out what he needs to get who is committed. He will then push out 1-2 more for a few extra. Watch who stays and who leaves.

I think Towns, Lyles, Harrison1, Harrison2, and maybe...Possibly Booker and just maybe Johnson are gone. They have to lose 4 for who is coming. He wants Maker or Diallo.

Matthews

I think this will turn some undecided recruits away. Thomas Bryant choosing IU is telling. If the Twins are gone, they get Newman.

Really? You think this UK team deserves a pass? They talked the talk, and they failed to live up to their talk.

I feel so much better. My bball year just got better.

Do we really want Zim? • Apr 04, 2015 01:18 AM

This is funny. Zim is giving KU a mercy recruiting chance. I hope to be shocked when he announces, but I don't see this kid at KU at all.

Actually, I'd say at this point, he's down to UNLV and UK. I think he's all in with UNLV at the moment. However, he's waiting to see what the bigs do at UK. Another West coast school might be a distant third option. But he simply lists KU out of kindness and respect for the program. I haven't heard a word of Self and Co visiting him at all for the last 6 mos or more.

I guarantee you there is a good reason why Self passed. If not, ask Self next chance you get. Why did Self simply ignore this guy in our backyard. I do believe Self was all in with Perry Ellis as was Calipari. However, Calipari wasn't leaving Kansas empty handed. He got lucky. It makes no sense that Self didn't even make a dent in his recruiting. Maybe Cauley-Stein passed on Self and KU? Whatever, it's over. He's at UK and good for him. He's playing for a NC.

We can boast that Calipari used a beast of a recruit from the great state of Kansas if he wins another NC.

Sheck my comment about Diallo waiting for Ellis or Alexander leaving.
24/7 Sports has adjusted their crystal ball. KU has dropped a few percentage points and St John's is gaining momentum. Self is up against Chris Mullins as a recruiter.

OK. The good news is Sheck has no idea about Chris Mullins. Also, ISU is dropping off his recruiting radar. The St John's bump is simpy the coaching change. Sheck was asked if the coaching change would help and he responded with, "No, not really..." The analysts are simply trying to give KU some competition for the McDs AA MVP. They are trying their best to push him away and get him to an East coast program or to UK.

So, I said it before and will say it again, WTH is Alex doing? What is going to happen with Loangate? How will it end? I just don't think the NCAA is going to concede. I think they will screw KU and Alex. They are treating this a bit like Kanter and aren't showing any signs of improvement. The Alex party that is withholding the docs aren't going to submit a damn thing. The NCAA is going to deem him ineligible. I just don't see it ending well at all for KU, Alex or the so-called party holding the alleged docs needed for review. If they do, they obvious have some info that will damn Alex.

BTW- Many UK fans still say Kanter and UK was screwed, haha! If it's legit and Alex's 'family member' violated the rules, let it go already. I have to admit now, it's not the NCAA hurting KU, it's Alex or his "family member." Self needs to simply admit something is wrong and ask him to declare so they can move forward with other recruits. If not, this little fiasco is going to cost us the services of Sheck.

Alex, no harm no foul. Once a Jayhawk, Always a Jayhawk. You couldn't help your 'family members' ' actions. It's not your fault. We all know you were in this for the long haul and maybe even wanted to come back. The NCAA isn't budging at all. You're hurting the program more than anything. Sorry big fella! I hope I'm wrong and it can change drastically to your favor.

What if KU doesn't get any OAD's? • Apr 04, 2015 12:28 AM

@BeddieKU23 Yeah, best defensive team that was almost beat 3 different times to superior offensive teams; LSU, Ol' Miss, and ND. ND's offensive plan had UK on their heels. They couldn't adjust and then ND choked and gave them the game in the last few minutes. They bailed UK out. Yeah, they are the best defensive team in 30 yrs.

What if KU doesn't get any OAD's? • Apr 04, 2015 12:21 AM

@DCHawker said:

then when can argue that's pretty effective coaching

I would agree with you. My point is, these players couldn't/wouldn't play in Self's system. It's too limited and we wonder what's wrong with these AAs. What's wrong with Selden? Why can't they thrive? Alex looked lost too most of the games he played. They are used to being the 'go to,' the 'man' or the player. High school coaches are not teaching some of these 'elite' players fundamentals. Hell, if it's not broke, don't fix it. Coaches want to win, even at the expense of 'letting a player play.' I'll remind you of Kobe Bryant's comment, although AAU, but the question is, what are these kids bringing into the NBA? Talent? Basic fundamentals that are suppose to be taught by the coaches?

So, we come full circle in our observations about coaching, Self v. Calipari in particular. We're trying to argue about the better coach. Calipari has thrown all his teachings and trainings out the window. He has no system of pick/roll or hi/lo. It's simply dribble drive and get it into the 7' post, chicken wing, and shoot a jump hook. Oh and play tenacious defense and move your feet without fouling. Yes, it's pretty sound.

Your comment about UK players being better than KU players in the NBA is debatable. I think player for player, KU's players aren't too bad in the NBA.

Self teaches them the tools they will need later in the NBA. They will develop and grow, but not over night. We'll see how effective Calipari is when he has to coach players. Let's see what he can do with a 3-4 star player. If that happens, I guarantee you he's gone to the NBA. I'm proud of Self. I'm glad he's a REAL players coach. They were gushing over Calipari in the McDs AA game that he was a players coach (Jaylen Rose and Jay Williams). I will bet money that Calipari can't coach lesser talent. I'll take Self any day of the week. Many are wanting the 3-4 star recruits at KU. They want the 2-3 year project, but we forget it will take time to coach these kids up to their potential.

Take a look at what Self has done with players. Embiid wasn't even in the top 100. The day he committed to KU, he jumped into the top 50. Then he jumped into the top 10 after the first half of the season. He then went to #1 and #2 pick and was drafted way higher than his initial rank. I guarantee Wiggins would've went to UK and entered the NBA a mediocre defensive player.

We'll see what happens to UK when Calipari leaves for the NBA. My money is on the fact that something will happen. The program will blow up IF and when he leaves.
