Is happening this summer. Bonus basketball!
Yay! I felt we were due for a summer trip.
Extra practice and game time to start getting the team on the same page.
Does this actually count as an international trip since passports aren't needed for American born players?
@Texas-Hawk-10 Puerto Rico is a US territory. Not international.

Love it. Team will need some time to mesh.
From discoverpuertorico.com regarding passports:
ā Do I need a passport to visit Puerto Rico?
āUnited States citizens and permanent residents don't need a passport to travel to Puerto Rico or the US Virgin Islands. However, the Real ID Act will be in effect as of May 2025, so verify if your state is compliant with these laws because otherwise, you may need a passport to travel. Travelers from other countries visiting Puerto Rico have the same visa and passport requirements that would apply if visiting the mainland United States.ā
Any idea what the competition will be like? I recall Doke's first year they played a couple ragtag teams in an Italian high school gym.

@Texas-Hawk-10 Then obviously the answer to your question is no. Because they are not flying internationally.

I'm not talking about international trip in the regular sense, but in the eyes of the NCAA since teams can only do an international trip once every 4 years. Because Puerto Rico is a U.S. Territory, does the NCAA view this the once every 4 years international trip or not because that's relevant.

KU's August 3 game is finally getting close. The earlier announcements only mentioned radio coverage; has anyone heard anything about a video broadcast? Where in the hell is ESPN+ when we need some coverage?
Sign of things to come:
Self said that KU would be playing against the Bahamian national team for 2 of the 3 games in Puerto Rico. The Bahamian team will have some pretty big names present for the games, but TBD on if any of them will play against KU. The names that will be present at least are Klay and Mychal Thompson, DeAndre Ayton, Buddy Hield, and Eric Gordon.
If nothing else, I'm guessing thise guys can give some really good advice to KU's players for the upcoming season and prepping for the NBA.
Any word or informed information on the starters for PR? I'm already tired of hearing Dickinson referenced with slow ball.
Anybody hear of tv listings or times?
Aug. 3, 5 and 7. Appeared on my calendar as, 11, 4 and 11. Pretty sure that means central time. Nothing on tv so far. Will be on Jayhawk radio. Oh boy!
Can you listen to Jayhawk radio over the internet for free?
@rockchalkjayhawk I think the internet 810 stream should work
Check out KUAthletics.com.
many thanks. I haven't tried to listen to games over the radio in a long time. Last i tried, it was a pay feature (i think). appreciate it!
Also saw that KU could potentially play against Remy Martin as he's also in Puerto Rico as part of the Bahamian team camp.
No tv sucks!
I've lost most if not all my enthusiasm for the PR trip. It seems like more of a team vacation or team bonding action, than an opportunity to get a solid jump start on the season. Now, I read somewhere that other college teams are doing the same thing and will also be there. I didn't follow the tournament that Kentucky played in, but that seemed more like the jump start I was hoping for our guys.
I'm just disappointed it won't be televised... Real bummer
Maybe tell us why it can't be. We aren't podunk U.

I don't believe any of the games from KU's past international trips have ever been televised either. Since all of the practice images show LU using the FIBA ball, I'm assuming FIBA rules are probably part of the reason why along with NCAA rules.
@Texas-Hawk-10 The trip they represented the U.S. was televised for sure. Can't forget Selden absolutely rocking rims on that trip.
Haven't UK's been televised? I feel like they have been but I could be wrong.

The World University Games was an international tournament, not some exhibition games like these. Also, no idea if UK has ever had their international trip games televised or not before.
One of the teams in PR looks really tuff if I read that correctly- Deandre Ayton, Buddy Hield, Eric Gordon, Klay Thompson, Kai Jones, Remy Martin.
In 2017 the KU-Italy games were streamed. ~~I remember finding a sketchy free link and watching at least one of the games.~~
https://www2.kusports.com/news/2017/jul/06/all-four-kus-exhibition-games-italy-will-be-stream/ ā
Bad memory. It was on "Flohoops" for 29.99
This is the first time since Self was here that I can recall KU games off the US mainland not being televised. It is probably because it's an exhibition. They had a "secret" game with Illinois a year ago and that also had no media, IIRC.
@Texas-Hawk-10 Since Remy signed with the Iceland team days ago, maybe he won't be available.
Just a thought.
As an addendum.....when I checked out KUAthletics site the games in Puerto Rico are shown on the schedule AND it does indicate that it will be broadcast on Jayhawk Radio. Maybe that's all we are gonna get.
Listening to Brian Hanni and Greg Gurley on the radio is fun.
Brian does a great and exciting play by play.
I wish he did the games on TV. He is much better than the ESPN commentators.

Bill Self: āI love how fast we are!ā š

@FarmerJayhawk 100% on board with this. Juan, Elmarko, Morris and then Kev with KJ

How Bill runs these lineups is going to be fun to watch.
Timberlake should be the 6th man
Whoād you start?
@kuballin10 man the way Terio looks itās going to be impossible to keep him off the floor. Juan Terio Kev KJ Hunter to start but honestly Kev would be my backup 4, KJ backup 5. Less Braun, just move everyone up a spot with Timberlake/Elmarko as the 6th man. And shoot Furphy could earn those minutes at the 4 by league play.

Heard Mitch and Teahan talking to the guys on their podcast and it sounds like Self has similar ideas. Mentioned KJ at the 5 if he wanted to switch everything. Mitch was talking about how hard it would be for an opposing team to score on Juan, Terio, Elmarko, Kev, and KJ. Speed and hands everywhere.

Juan rough startā¦didnāt catch it turnover and layup

Morris got the start today well deserved
Man they are doubling and pressure Juan this is good for him
Hunter huge 3
Kev big 3 nice pass Juan!
Geez juan slip and another turnover this his 3rd in 5 minutes
Hunter should be doing much more in the paint due to his size advantage.
Elmarko first sub in for Juan
For Morris not Juan
Kevin two and oneās man heās looking like the man on both ends!
Hunter didnāt box his big man out for the buddy Hield 3
Juan ripped him thatās the Juan we know!
Morris in for Kj now!
4 guards - Juan, Elmarko, Morris and Kev around big Hunter
Would be cool if Hunter could box out his man.

Elmarko takes it and Morris with the guarded layup

this is why we have these games , play the game , Learn from the game
Score, please?
@jayballer67 I donāt disagree with you assessment but I think these games are like glorified pick up games at the YMCA. Not a ton of defense (besides Juan taking two charges, go Juando!) just want to have fun and bond as a team.
Maybe Hunter is just holding back a bit. In the third quarter, I finally got to see him with the ball in the paint and watched him work to get his shot. That's part of what I've been waiting to see with him. I haven't looked at a box score, but Juan had an unusually bad game with turnovers.
@stoptheflop Juan against athleticism isnāt good unfortunately. If guys get in his grill and muscle him he doesnāt do well. Play against grown men and that will happen. Curious to see how he responds Monday!
Best lineup with true talent is:
Elmarko
Morris
Kev
Kj
Hunter
Juan off the benchā¦..yes, I know it will never happen but we got two nba level guards and one comes off the bench cause Bill somehow will never not start Juan. Hopefully much like the 2022 run the guards off the bench play 20-25 minutes and Juan is in that 18-22 minute range.
Love Juan but we got better players than him based on what weāve seen down there. Only one game and itās sample size (Iām ignoring the first game against an naia type school).
Oh no. Didnāt watch the game but saw pics of the box score. Did kj make another 3? That would make him 3/4 for the trip so far. Our best shooter from the perimeter by percentage.
@benshawks08 heās 2/3 I thought and yeah he made one - same corner spot as before
Kj is the man. If he can learn to put his head down and drive right like Jalen he would be tough to guard. Freak athlete and his passing with Hunter and vice versa is money already - great chemistry and unselfish ball.
Hearing uk thinks they are gonna wax us which I find interesting. Their young guards are real good but curious to see how they do against our backcourt with Elmarko and Morris as athletes

@kuballin10 we should feast. Theyāre very, very, very young. Decent athletes but taking a bunch of guys from a bad high school class isnāt really a recipe for success. Class of 2012 this is not.
Just viewed the Hawks second game in Puerto Rico and zI am really looking forward to the season. Size, speed, finishers, defensive-minded wings, rim protector, really good ball movement, good cutters, reboundersā¦..Of course too many turnovers, unimpressive perimeter shooting but they are already doing so many things moving the ball and athletes to finishers and create shots. And pushing the ball for layups -and Dunks which build excitement. And having Furphy waiting in the wings with his particular skill set.
Just now able to finish the game. I think maybe the coolest thing to me so far is how well KJ and Hunter play next to each other already. They are passing to each other as if they have been playing ball together for 10 years. There is a connection there.
Also Bill having a footer who can score the ball at the 5 for end of game play calls is awesome.
Well, all I'm going to say after watching the second game and looking at the box score is that this is another doomed season; are you kidding me: 14/27 FTs? Who amongst you can't go to a FT line right now and hit more that 50%. In years past, after losing a game at the line, I would go out to my driveway and shoot FTs just to see why these young guys make it look so sticking hard. Opponents seem to easily make their FTs. Doomed I tell you. JK

Your right Your NEVER gonna se Bill start somebody over Juan, just to many other faucets to the game then just scoring. We have other guys that are SUPPOSE to do that. Juans main job - - defend - which by the way he does really , really well - - assist , oh yes umm he does that pretty well too - -basically run the team - which he does, can see a negative difference when we have others runnin the point- -shaky ball handling, most the time they are a turnover looking for a place to happen.

I thought it was interesting Bill said Juan was okay but didnāt hammer him in postgame.

@kuballin10 Juan will be fine. He still had 9 assists yesterday. TOās will come down as the team chemistry improves. Heās also not going to shoot 12.5% all year lol. 29 assists on 37 shots is crazy good and will only improve with time.

I was given a pretty hard time last season for saying Juan is very limited athletically. I do really like him and think his IQ and long arms help him with what he lacks physically. That being said do a 3/4 court sprint, vertical jump and shuttle drill with everyone on this team. Iād bet a 100k Juan is in the bottom 30% of all 3.

He's plenty athletic, he's just not physically very strong. Dejaun would absolutely be top 5 in sprint, shuttle, and vertical on the team. You can't be the caliber of defender he is if those traits are below average. It's his physical strength that really holds him back. He's entering his 4th year in college and if his weights are accurate, has only added 10 pounds since then. 247 listed him at 160 lbs. when was in HS and KU currently lasts him at only 170 lbs. To give a comparison, Elmarko Jackson is listed as an inch taller than Dejuan, but 25 lbs. heavier at 195 according to KU's website.
We all know Harris struggles with physicality because his body isn't big enough or strong to take a beating by bigger guards all game and those are the games he struggles with.

Also Bill having a footer who can score the ball at the 5 for end of game play calls is awesome.
Bill will always always always go to the post feed as a security blanket. So it's nice when we have a really good player there.

I thought it was interesting Bill said Juan was okay but didnāt hammer him in postgame.
Proceeded to say how Elmarko and Morris were so bad defensively yet those guys make up for it by rebounding, assisting and oh yeah scoring the ball on the other end.
I hope we see some fluctuation in minutes because when Juan is bad itās real bad. When heās good heās great but when he canāt score and he doesnāt attack heās not worth playing
Heās one of his guys he really loves like Jamari Traylor. He was awful the last quarter thoughā¦
The only guys I'm not concerned one bit about are the national championship dudes: Juando, Kev and KJ.
@jayballer67 oh heās starting every game no doubt. If steph curry was at KU heād start next to Juan but Juan wouldnāt leave the rotation lol
Juan is important to the team and can start but I hope our other more impactful guards can play more minutes and finish.
Juan is a great story and important to the team but when he turns it over and canāt hit the broad side of a barn itās brutal to watch
Morris
Elmarko
Kev
Kj
Heās maybe the 5th guy but I doubt it. He isnāt fast, he isnāt quick, he is very limited athletically. Granted we are nitpicking a KU starter.
Letās hope he bounces back tomorrow against nba competition but if heās lackadaisical with the ball, turning it over as if heās not trying and completely disrespecting the game as @FarmerJayhawk said then donāt let him play many minutes
Tomorrows the game I care about most if their 3 nba guys play decent minutes we will lose but man it will be fun
@TYOHawk Bill and his petsā¦ā¦I donāt see practice but man with Kj it was obvious in games. With Taylor it wasnāt, same with the Reed/Morningstar deal. If feeding the post is so important Self doesnāt know ball as much as we think he does. On a list of important traits feeding the post isnāt in the top 10

It just comes with Coach. As much as he loves short scoring guards or athletic wings and post scorers. He loves the the scrappy kids who had to fight for everything.

Every team ha a player just like that, that fans bitch about -- I just thank GOD Juan has better moments then bad.
I wil say this El Marko is going to be a stud - -to bad he is more likely then not gonna be here for just one year
@kuballin10 Here we go again...
@mayjay lol no doubt Iām starting early.
Last year it was Joe should play more or actually year before that and then last year he showed he doesnāt have it.
This year we have the horses and both Morris and Elmarko are better nba prospects for a reason.
Gotta trust Bill

Being a better NBA prospect doesn't equal being a better college player right now. Dejuan Harris is a better college player than Morris or Jackson right now because he is a much more polished product than either of those two.
There's also a reason why Yesufu ended up in the wastelands of Pullman, Washington. He's an undersized 2 with a low BBIQ that's never met a shot he didn't like that Self never should've offered.
Constructing a championship caliber team isn't necessarily about the 5 best players, it's a bit the 5 right players and Harris brings a lot of other tools than scoring to the table. Having a real post threat now means that Harris can focus on his defense and running the show and not worry about having to score like last season. I wouldn't be shocked if Harris averaged 8-9 assists per game this season with the supporting cast he has.
I love it: lineup controversies and discussions in August. Bring on the NBA players today. It will be good to see how Hunter matches up with Ayton. I'm most interested in his defense today. I was really surprised that Hunter scored 28 points last game. I watched the entire game and saw some good things from Hunter, but also poor rebounding for the tallest dude in the game and some lack of effort. But, I'm pretty impressed with his 28 points.
@Texas-Hawk-10 I donāt disagree with you but kensucky not playing Booker more because he was a frosh is also the reason they lost. You play your most talented guys now so by March they are ready.
You were dead on with Joe and I was wrong thereā¦.tip of the cap.
Juan should average 8-9 assists because he canāt shoot and doesnāt look to attack the paint for any dump off dunks/layups or ooops. I mean all the way in Puerto Rico they know he doesnāt look to score. They are daring him to shoot floaters.
@stoptheflop I think heās just not laterally quick or explosive off the floor (not a quick jumper).
He should have 5 or so more blocks but heās a hair late every time
Offensively heās flat out stupidā¦.just crazy at 7 feet his touch near the rim and all the way out to 3
Let's go #Jayhawks š“šµ
šāāļø
Juan night and day different!
Ripped buddy and has hit a 3
Way more aggressiveā¦letās go Juan!
CB is gonna be on mic in 3rd quarter
should be fun to hear from CB
KJ
Do we know why morris isn't playing?
Bam
@Texas-Hawk-10 I donāt disagree with your strength assessment. I donāt mean to sound like heās a bad athlete because heās not but we have several NBA ready guys athletic wise that he aināt in the same zip code as. Iām 6ā1 guy with about 6 inches less wing span than Juan and I dunked just about every single day during basketball season as a junior and senior in highschool, he aināt out jumping many on this roster bud.
Hunter fighting is good
We definitely need Morris and Furphy
Elmarko struggling to hit the outside shot otherwise heās solid.
Timberlake is hit and miss today as well
Need more offense when Hunter goes to the bench
KJ was horrid today
Bill draws up elevator play for Kevā¦.not our best shooter Timberlake
KJ was fineā¦.Bahamian team changed how they played ball screens and KJ/Hunter was neutralized
Lackluster finish to game 3

Are you sure that was Juan ? just curious cause Juan doesn't attack the paint or look to score -Juan adds a lot to the game
Got to find out who this guy was - - not Juan , this guy hit 10 -14 shots - -23 points ,Na that can't be Juan , he doesn't do that lol
@jayballer67 Blind squirrels find an acorn eventually!

Ya and we can always hope that chronic bitchers will learn there is a reason a Coach is a Coach. and it's best to leave the real decisions about who plays and who doesn't to him - -Funny thing about it he seems to have done a pretty good job at what he does. Well I mean probably not for you but then we just have to consider the source lmao
Really looking for to your input this season , enjoy the countdown . Oh & ya so how many acorns did you end up finding anyways, I'm sorry didn't realize you were blind , good luck with that
The thing I will say about the overall 3 game series. Just a like when we won the 2 games, same goes for this one - -I think it's really hard to take to much away from this is overall this was a good experience for the guys. - Learning experience for the new guys, it was good to get guys in game experience El Marko , , Mc Dowell , am such.
Think this will give guys the chance to see where they need to improve -- ONE thing for sure they need to work on is my GOD learn to make your dam free throws, those are give me points, the other team is gifting you freebies-- got to work on those Looking forward to the Season I think we can be really good - -I think El Marko is gonna be fine , will be interesting to see what the newest member can give us to help- - Yet now it's time for some FOOTBALL I''m ready could be fun- - great for out for aSaturday afternoon at the stadium - -ROCK CHALK
Sure was fun being able to watch some KU hoops in August!
You can't take too much out of these games. Obviously you can see skillsets, how the new guys look.
Randomness:
-- Loved watching Elmarko! He seems relatively poised and solid. I'm not going to judge him on his 3 pt shooting just yet. His other skills will be important for us.
-- Hunter's stats at Michigan showed him as a good rebounder. Not sure he looked too great on the boards in PR. Just the eyeball test. did anybody look good on the boards?
-- Dajuan looked asleep at times. Maybe guarding Buddy and Gordon isn't easy! Too many pina coladas.
-- Timberlake. Interesting. Showed more athleticism than i thought he had. Drained a three or two. He may need some time to figure out how to get his shot in the offense.
-- Didn't see many positives out of Parker so far. At least today. The backup post seems like an issue so far. (insert KJ as a 5 talk here)
Self was livid when the team allowed 2 straight baskets on inbounds-under-the-basket plays by the Bahamian team. No more of those after the KU time out, if IIRC.
I think my takeaways are mostly positive. There were some mistakes that will be cleaned up as the season draws near. Things like the inbounds and getting pulled into trash talking, holding onto the ball, and positions on offense and defense... Free throw shooting has to improve.
The athleticism is impressive at all positions, so the team could be elite at fast breaks and elite at defense.
The team is already good. Really good. If their improvement curve is above average, they should be a FF contender.
Just got a chance to watch. The frosh still have no idea what they're doing. Self yelled at Elmarko a few times to drive when he didn't or pass out when he drove. The feel isn't there just yet, which is fine. He's still new-ish to the game and very new to Kansas. At this point you have to be concerned about rebounding. Hunter hasn't rebounded well AT ALL and KJ is... KJ. Missing Terio hurt. He's the only guy right now I trust to go out and get his. Juan is Juan. He's a capable scorer. He looked much more engaged today than Saturday. Everyone says Kev's shot is better, but we need to see it go in. So many bricks today. But overall good trip, we got out healthy, and know where we need to work.
@FarmerJayhawk Kevs free throws are enough for me to be concerned about his 3% getting any better this year. The touch just does t seem to be there. I feel like good shooters swish the free throws a majority of the time and then on the misses have a soft enough touch for it to fall a good amount of the time. Doesnāt seem that way for kev. Even the males donāt go in clean or soft a good portion of the time. His balance on the free throw line stresses me out. Seems like heās falling into the lane after every attempt. If heās thinking that hard about a free throw imagine the wheels turning on the long ballā¦

Every team should do this, and pack the paint against us. This team will have to prove they can make shots.
