No time to read through this right now. Does this mean we might have to vacate wins/final fours from last year?

This scenario is becoming increasingly unlikely, imo. The verdict today was huge for KU.

@mayjay Thank you for your input. The way I see it the defense was trying to argue the coaches were extensions of the university, and they got shut down.

Also I am not sure where they found this judge, but he seemed to be very contentious towards the defense.

@jayballer73 This result is amazing for KU as far as I can tell.

@mayjay maybe you can chime in as I am no legal expert. BUT, as far as I understand this, since they were found guilty of defrauding KU, as far as the law is concerned KU as an institution couldn't have been part of the fraud. And obviously Self and Townsy are university employees so as far as this result is concerned, they were not a part of it. I'm not sure how anything happens to Self/Townsy/KU at this point but we will see I suppose.

Dear Jayhawk Community,

During the past three weeks in a federal courtroom in New York City, the University of Kansas and our men’s basketball program have been the subjects of testimony and speculation during the trial of three defendants accused of defrauding three universities, including KU. The trial concluded today with jury verdicts of guilty on all counts of conspiracy and wire fraud.

First, we want to remind you of developments that predate this trial. In fall 2017, amid concerns about student-athlete recruitment, the NCAA instructed each Division I institution to conduct a review of its men’s basketball program to ensure compliance with NCAA rules. KU took the issue seriously and engaged outside counsel to assist our review. At the same time, KU has been working with prosecutors, including fulfilling all obligations of subpoenas issued to us.

During the trial, information was presented regarding a former KU student-athlete, a current KU student-athlete, and KU men’s basketball coaches. Some of the information we were aware of, and some is new to us. The new information needs to be evaluated and understood. We have already been in contact with the NCAA regarding trial developments and will continue to work with NCAA staff moving forward.

Two additional federal trials are set for February and April 2019. Thus, we remain unable to fully comment on the issues before us. By limiting our comments, we are able to protect the integrity of the federal matters and the work of the NCAA.

While that work continues, we remain fully supportive of our student-athletes, our coaches and our men’s basketball program. Coach Self and Kansas Athletics are committed to maintaining a culture of compliance, and we will continue these efforts. Kansas Athletics has been, and will continue to be, committed to excellence and integrity.

So, what now? First, we will await guidance from prosecutors as to next steps regarding the criminal matter. Second, once the Justice Department clears us to move forward, we will work with the NCAA to vigorously review new information presented during the trial. Third, we will continue to review the eligibility of all our student-athletes to ensure that they meet the eligibility standards of the NCAA and KU.

Finally, while we have made no decision regarding a long-term contract extension with our apparel partner, adidas, we continue to evaluate our options. There is no timetable for a decision. A strong apparel partnership is important and beneficial to all our student-athletes and our institution, and we will take great care in making the right decision for KU.

We look forward to updating you on these matters when it is appropriate to do so. In the meantime, as our men’s and women’s basketball seasons approach, we encourage you to continue to support the incredible young men and women in our programs.

Respectfully,

Douglas A. Girod
Chancellor

Jeffrey P. Long
Director of Athletics

Yeah, plus they just happened to catch a guy on something else that led to Adidas guys mostly. More trials are coming though, we will see what shakes out with Nike.

Bill Self opening up about the impact of the FBI trial. Hasn't mentioned directly but said he's comfortable with "how we do business" and doesn't expect the trial to have a "negative" impact on his legacy. Repeats that he'll make a comment once the trial is over.

UK/Cal really wanted Oscar Tshiebwe but he just went to WVU because he really likes Huggins okay??!!

Nike probably was okay that he at least stayed in the brotherhood. But Oscar does come from the same school as Thugnate.

WVU had a lot of connections to him. I have no doubt that someone took money, possible that Oscar didn't see a dime of it though.

Verdict reached. Will be read in 22 minutes.

FBI...here we go • Oct 24, 2018 05:58 PM

Huggins said he didn’t think it had been proven just yet that basketball programs were involved in the recruiting scandal but that, if it did happen, it was just a small number of schools involved.

“We’re talking, what, four or five schools at most?” he said, noting there are 361 teams in Division I basketball. “I think the state of our game is fine. If things happened, we all know they shouldn't have happened, but that doesn’t affect that state of our game and the way people go about doing their business.”

What a blowhard Huggins is.

Preseason Hype/Discussion • Oct 24, 2018 04:29 PM

Told y'all Grimes has a great basketball mind.

Preseason Hype/Discussion • Oct 24, 2018 04:28 PM

“It’s definitely hard to guard him and keep him in front, especially if he hits you in the chest, it knocks you back a little bit and he can get separation and knock it down,” Teahan says. “He has certain moves in his body that are hitchy, and he’ll get you moving a half step one way and get enough room to knock it down in your face.”

These are the type of moves that won Self over, and once the Jayhawks started recruiting Grimes, the expectation was that they would land him because his mom, Tonja Stelly, also attended KU. But Howard says Stelly was no help. “She made it extra tough for us because she went here,” he says. “She wanted him to make the decision himself.”

Grimes was ultimately convinced it was the best system for him because of Self’s fist offense and the freedom he gives his guards to make multiple reads with the ball in their hands. When Grimes is asked about theoretical plays, he talks out the progressions and options he would have with the ball.

Close your eyes and you can picture Deron Williams, who would play methodically and then beat defenders with a burst. “Deron was sneaky athletic too,” Howard says. “But this kid, he’s freaky. And he’s fast too.”

Preseason Hype/Discussion • Oct 24, 2018 04:26 PM

Grimes is learning to always be on the move when Lawson has the ball, and at a recent practice, the big man found Grimes cutting to the basket. He cocked the ball back as if he was going to dunk it until Silvio De Sousa met him at the rim. Instead of trying to dunk on De Sousa, Grimes adjusted in mid-air, going underneath De Sousa’s left arm and dropped the ball over the rim with a finger roll.

“I was like, ‘woo, that was crazy,’” De Sousa says.

“If that was me or anyone else,” sophomore Chris Teahan says, “they’re flat on their back because Silvio knocks them over.”

@BShark At some point I think Silvio develops a 3 ball. Also, I think Silvio moves better on D than Mccormack or Udoka. This doesn't help us on the defensive end chasing 3-chucking bigs.

Part of the point is that Sam and Aaron don't think you can play Silvio along side McCormack or Doke. They are all back to the basket C type bigs. It's three guys for one spot, essentially. Very crowded.

I've heard a lot of really positive things about McCormack so this will be very interesting.

@BShark Oh no way Self doesn't start Dok. You can book that.

I can see Dok starting for sure.

I think it will be interesting to see how Self plays it. I think once you get past Dok and Dedric, the bigs aren't very good so it makes a lot of sense to play small some of the time. But maybe he wants more of a particular identity and Mitch/Dave get bigger minutes than I expect.

Edit: I'm counting KJ as a wing when I say the other bigs aren't very good. KJ is much better than Mitch.

Starters imo, maybe not right away but eventually.

I think now rounding out the 8 man rotation will be Garrett, Moore and Dok. McCormack as a spot duty guy.

Interestingly enough, I think Silvio going out is biggest for Charlie Moore. It slides KJ down to playing the 4 much more and frees up guard minutes.

@BShark I think you have to be eligible to play in exhibitions. Our transfers played in the overseas tourneys, but not in exhibitions, I think.

Billy played the exhibitions when he hadn't actually been cleared by then. Not saying it's 100%, but things definitely don't look good.

Silvio Done • Oct 24, 2018 03:13 PM

My biggest concern with this is that he is being withheld from the exhibitions. Those games don't count so reading the tea leaves you could say it's because Self expects Silvio to never play for KU again this year.
