Newman just needs to go overseas. He won't see time in the NBA. He is too short and just not explosive enough of an athlete to hang. He is a great scorer and would probably flourish in Europe.
Strongly agree with this. No shame in it either. NBA is a freakshow league. Newman will be an absolute stud in a league with slightly lower tier athletes.

Correct. But only people near KC can get that.
I'm actually paying for ESPN+, but if you don't want to, check that link a little before tip-off.

I'm curious if you will see Basketball change the RS rule to something similar to football at some point. I don't think it would be good for the sport. I don't like it for football either.

No way Mitch takes a RS now. Could absolutely be needed. One thing is for sure he will be ready if called upon.
@BeddieKU23 You can still play in the exhibitions and take a RS if you are a FR I believe.
He's good, and athletic but this team is L-O-A-D-E-D with big guards in particular.
BeddieKU23 said:
Yeah he should save a year with how much wing depth we have. The comments from the staff are extremely promising for the future though.
Strongly agree. Players typically don't RS and leave under Self. If a player is taking a RS it's because they think that player will contribute down the road*. If it's a player they are on the fence about they won't RS so that if the player ends up transferring they won't have to actually burn eligibility sitting.
*Tyler Self doesn't count. :joy:
“You know what? I don’t know that it does matter. I’ll visit with my staff when I get back and we’ll evaluate practice today," Self said. "I think there’s a good chance Doke and Lagerald and Dedric will start. After that, I don’t know if we’ll go with some experience or throw the young kids out there. I wouldn’t be surprised if we go with two different starting lineups in the first two games just to see how they react, but don’t read into who starts.”
“Any redshirt possibilities? Yeah, I do think we have one. I think Ochai could be a redshirt possibility even though I haven’t talked to him about that," Self said. "You can make a case, well, would you redshirt a big since we have five of them, but I haven’t talked to anybody about that. But if there’s anybody that could be a possibility, Ochai could be the one in large part because you can’t redshirt any of the other guy because they’ve already been redshirted, at least that would play.”

I still think JRE picks KU but Nova has me pretty nervous. Too early to say anything definitive on Hurt, and we’re not really recruiting Chandler that hard.
When you slowplay guys like Chandler and some others, you'd better not miss on your top targets like JRE. JRE is as close to "must get" as you can have for KU imo. I really don't want to see what the scramble result looks like. Hope you are right.
The backup plan for JRE is Zeke, but the staff views him as a guy than can start in years 2-3, not a guy that’s going to be a KU level starter immediately.
Seems to clash with papa Nnaji thinking his son is OAD. Thanks for sharing though as always.

@stoptheflop If Coach Self can get Wiggs to play good ball, then he can get Grimes to do it. Never met the kid but I bet he has more heart in his pinky than Wiggs does in is whole body.
Part of it with Grimes is he has such a good basketball mind that he always just wants to make the right theoretical play even if that was a pass to a player that is less likely to score than he is.
Given that he will be surrounded with much more talent at KU than he was in HS/AAU that should help him as well.
Crimsonorblue22 said:
@stoptheflop I don't think he meant it exactly that way. I think he meant he has more to give and can do more than he knows. I don't know if that makes sense. If you saw him play in the USA games, he's not lazy! Josh has to have that motor cause he can't shoot, the best of josh and wiggs together would be a great bb player! That fire I love about josh has also got him in trouble.
Yeah he just meant that sometimes Grimes needs that extra push. Grimes responds well to being challenged. It won't shock me one bit if Grimes has more points on average against Nova, UK and MSU than he does against Wofford, South Dakota etc...
Dedric is the kind of player that isn't likely to throw down dunks in a game and sometimes won't look like he is doing much but then you check the stat sheet and see like 18/8/6/2/1 or something like that.
Woodrow said:
@Crimsonorblue22 I read Sam's article. Typical stuff from the Star. I also saw a article from someone from Sports Illustrated that basically said that since Silvio has to sit out that Self should have to sit out as well. Of course it was retweeted and commented on by many media people agreeing with him.
Hopefully Self can do exactly as he said in his presser last night and block out all the noise and not let all of this become a distraction.
That guy is a huge douche bag. Wrote a big conspiracy piece on the Patriots with no evidence at all and worked at the absolute trash rag Detroit FreeP before that so that really tells you all you need to know about him.

My football team is like that. Well, not the worst, but I've had two straight losses by less than 4 total points or I'd be in strong playoff contention...

Arizona with another big recruit . Top 60 player.
Yep. KU will bounce back just fine as well, we will see how long it takes though.
Self: At KU we've recruited and signed many non-Adidas prospects and many Adidas-related prospects in high school have gone elsewhere. It is only one of many factors.
Self: My staff and I have not and do not offer improper inducements to them or their families to influence their college decisions nor are we aware of any efforts to do so. I take pride in this. Legal proceedings in NY have caused undue stress to our university and fan base.
Self: I understand there are questions left unanswered, but I am going to refrain from comment on specific issues from trial and focus solely on coaching my basketball team.
Self: I have full confidence in every member of my staff, including Kurtis Townsend, and I feel as strongly about that as I did 10 years ago.
Self on declarative statement he doesn't give or is aware of improper benefits: I'm saying that we do not operate in that manner. I can't make any direct statements referring to the trial. That would be something directed at how we conduct our business all the time.
Self: The way we go about our business hasn't changed over the last 14 months. There has been no involvement from a presence on our campus that I'm aware of in any way that one could say is a third party coming to our campus for any reason.
Self isn't going to comment on whether verdict is "a good thing" for Kansas: I don't believe that's my place to do so.
Self on Adidas relationship extension: That's a question for our chancellor and athletic director.
Self on keeping team's focus on basketball: When you're in the eye, you don't really feel as much of what's going on outside of it, and I think that's actually more common for young people than it is for adults.
Self: I don't think I'm prepared to talk about future of shoe company involvement in recruiting, but the Rice commission has put forward some things that could be a positive for our sport moving forward. We may not understand unintended consequence of ideas put forth, though.
Self asked if he's ever backed off a recruit based on something he's heard: I'm sure it's happened at some time, but there's so many things said or rumored in recruiting. That doesn't mean you cease recruiting them. You look into it. There's a lot of ploys in recruiting.
Self asked if it's proper for coaches to have friendships with shoe company execs: It would be a sad day that you have to control, because you work here or there ... that I have to limit my access to you and you to me. I don't think you can regulate all those things.
Self on his message to recruits concerned about trial: That's a hard one. The things I can't say to you are the same things I can't say to them. All I can say is, is this what you heard or is this what was actually said? I won't run from this with recruits.
Self said his initial response is "absolutely" as to whether he'll address details of case when everything (future cases) wraps up, but it depends on what the powers that be instruct him to do.
Self quit reading media reports on all this two-plus weeks ago. If something has been said in trial, it deserves to be reported. Sometimes what's been said in trial is misrepresented in story based on narrative or what headline sometimes gathers.
Self taking major issue with headlines versus what's inside stories that have reported on this matter. "I will say this: If it's been reported then it's fair game, and I understand that."
Based on what he knows, Self feels "totally confident in my staff." Press conference is wrapping up, but Self extends it and says this is the last he'll talk about this matter until everything involving corruption scandal is wrapped.
Self has a hard time believing NCAA will issue severe punishment "to make an example" out of a program, but said if severe punishment is warranted, it will and should be leveled. "Maybe that's a very wholesome way of looking at it."
Self: I really think part of this is also a test for us to better ourselves as a coach. Sometimes it's hard to focus when you have a lot of distractions. Isn't that what we tell our players all the time? Well, now I need to listen to what I tell our players.

@BShark - Hey! I care about Pitt State athletics! And the Gorillas might beat KU in football.... 🙄
Ha! A low blow my man. My bad.
But yeah I mean beyond a few assorted alumni of course. I speak from experience, I've been to a lot of Washburn basketball and football games. Maybe I should have just said Washburn, but basically any D2 school applies to my point.
Pitt State would definitely give KU a game in football, no doubt.
Luka Doncic is the truth.
Anyway, I'm interested to see how this all develops, but I'm just not hopeful that any real change or progress will be made yet. We might be headed that way when the NBA lifts the age barrier in 2022 though. From what I understand the NBA is waiting because this will essentially create a "double class" and they want to get old draft picks owed from trades off the books.
The charade of amateur athletics is the real problem. The NCAA makes tons of money because they have good players. Good players require money to get, basic economics. Why would good players play for free when they can get paid?* Profits will be slashed to next to nothing if all the best players go elsewhere. Gyms will be 1/4 full or worse. No one will care about KU, UK, Duke, UNC etc... Just like no one cares about Pitt State basketball now
Just let them sign with agents and profit from their likeness and still play college ball. More likely though, based on the results of this trial is that the system won't change.
*And make no mistake, almost every last player gets paid. Just hang around an AAU gym for a minute or two. There are plenty of NCAA D1 coaches that are completely detached from the situation, but get guys whose parents were paid by the shoecos. Josh Jackson's mom RAKED in money, big time, as a random example.

As far as I can tell there is no hard evidence that Fenni got the $60K in the first place: he has vigorously denied it all along btu then...so did Preston's mom.
Correct!
There is hard evidence for Preston obviously, but not for Fenny. Of course Fenny is obviously very slimy but we don't know for sure. Could have just been leveraging Adidas, I would absolutely not put that past him.
FarmerJayhawk said:
Gassnola said under oath Fenny didn’t get the $60k, just the $2500 if memory serves.
He said he didn't pay Fenny, he tried but didn't get it through. He said that Fenny said he needed it to pay back UA/the MD booster I believe.
JayHawkFanToo said:
Correction. Silvio did not receive $60K, his guardian did and considering that Silvio wanted to go and ended up at KU would appear to indicate he was not aware of the $60K payment Also, I don't believe there is any proof that Fenni even received the $60k, it is all allegations at this time and Fenni could have been subpoenaed to testify but was not: maybe the FBI is saving him for the Under Armour trial?
I said allegedly. Check my follow-up as well. Didn't mean to imply Silvio got it directly.
kjayhawks said:
I'm a little confused about the 60k from what I've seen so he got it and paid it back with Adidas money, then got the 2500 or just kept the 60k?
We don't know. The 60k isn't proven, just alleged. Hell it could have simply been a ploy from Fenny to leverage Adidas for more money.
The hand wringing from UNC, UK and Duke fans rings particularly hollow.
kjayhawks said:
So let me get this straight supposedly SDS got 2500 to come to kansas so we sit him yet Zion, that wanted housing, jobs and money, who is now at Dook won't be sat. Same as Wendell Carter being mentioned in several reports. I bet SDS has a suspension or something a lala Selby or something of that nature while Dookies obviously paid for Zion and UNC has fake classes and get nothing SMH. I personally think we will be fine because no one alive will go against the ACC.
Silvio got 60k to go to Maryland allegedly, and according to Gassnola under oath received 2500 to pay for some online classes.
This has been about headlines from the start. A big dog and pony show, nothing more.

Self was asked whether he thinks his legacy has taken a hit. He said he doesn't think it will be negative based on what he knows (but cannot yet say) but acknowledges perception is another factor. (1/2)
4:09 PM - 24 Oct 2018
Self: “I’m not going to sit here and defend myself because I know who we are and how we conduct our business and I’m proud about that. That has not changed at all.” (2/2)
Also, KU has announced Self will hold a news conference tonight at 7 p.m.
