@justanotherfan Self still struggles to play any player not committed to defense and team ball. A big part of why Vick coming back shocked me.

It changes the whole make-up of the team. You really can't say Hayward makes them x amount better for sure. Stats get displaced, they would certainly be different. Perhaps better but how much better is impossible to say.
Looks like Fritz could be a really good candidate. Has more tread on the tires left compared to someone like Les. Will be interesting to see how Tulane does this year.
Turgeon wouldn't be a top 5 coach in the Big 12. Lol.

@HighEliteMajor There is definitely some coasting. The playoffs are much better in this regard.
I don't hate college basketball but I definitely don't care to watch say, KSU vs ISU in conference season.

He had a 77% win rate at LSU when they fired him. I wouldn't expect that at KU especially right off the bat but he probably still has recruiting connections and if he could get the line play respectable that goes a long way. It would also be a zig vs zag situation with him in the B12 since he likes grind it out run the ball football.

I love Les Miles, but at 64, I don't see him being a realistic option at this point unless there's also a coach in waiting named as well because Miles wouldn't be here for long. On the plus side though, he would also likely give KU a good shot at retaining Tony Hull.
After how Bielema crashed and burned at Arkansas, would it really be a smart move to hire the same guy that got Long fired from his previous job? I'd pass on Bielema at this point because he struggled within the SEC going 11-29 in league games. If he went to a Group of 5 school and won like he did at Wisconsin, I'd be more open to it then, but not right now.
Brady Hoke just got hired as an NFL assistant coach with the Carolina Panthers and wasn't impressive as an OC at Oregon in 2016 or Tennessee last year. I would take a hard pass on Hoke at this point as well.
I don't think KU is really hiring from a position of power. I think any of these guys could bring KU up to respectability. I think Miles would be ideal because you could then move on once he would want to retire and hopefully had KU football in a better spot.

I wouldn’t be mad about Bielema either, but it would just be a stepping stone to another SEC job or bigger job for him. So he might only be here 3-5 years pending successes.
I would take any of these coaches in a heartbeat.

The "Hurd" being referred to is Nathan Hurd, Vick's AAU coach. While I don't think he'll play PG this season, it is pretty clear that this was a discussion point.

Sounds like it was recruit speak at this point. We all can take an educated guess that many coaches will lie to get commits. Calipari and Drew are prime offenders but I wouldn't be surprised if Self made some suspect comments while trying to land a kid.
Like you said, he has only ever been a 2G here and now Self has a natural PG in Dotson and a small guard in Moore that you really don't want playing outside of the 1/2.
@HighEliteMajor Fair enough, but I just really don't see it as worse than some of the other engagements here.

@Statmachine It took a string of recruiting failures to bring Vick back tbf.
Of course Self doesn't think it will happen, he thinks Vick is worth the risk. That doesn't mean it ends well. Self could be desperate because of 3 point shooting, and I wouldn't blame him.
