Agree. And being injured was definitely a factor for him. Hopefully he stays healthy this year.
The good news is Self will have him play in the post some. Hopefully Self gets through to him on the effort thing.
Hopefully Newman is willing to put the effort and work in defensively. It's not like he left a situation where he had a rummy for a coach, it was Ben friggin Howland.

Just as info, Wiggins was 21.4 in his season, and Embiid was 28.2. Marcus Morris' 29.3 in 2010-11 was the best I could find for a Kansas player under Self.
Yeah, I don't think he will next year for the record. As advanced stats go, Cunliffe was pretty bad in general. But so was the entire ASU team really. So in part it's all about context as well. For example Tyler Self had a better DRTG than Cunliffe, but we know Self never played meaningful minutes. Overall, I just didn't like what I saw of Cunliffe as well. He's intriguing though, and I am definitely interested to see how he fits with this KU team and I'd love to ultimately be proven wrong about him.
Cunliffe CAN become a very good player for KU, but he needs a lot of seasoning.
Lacks basketball skills. He will do something amazing athletically, then he will do something completely baffling. If you are really bored at some point I recommend watching all the ASU games he played in last year. They should still all mostly be on youtube.
The expectations thing is mainly that thread on the phog. I think some people in that thread are thinking Cunliffe is going to do a lot more than he actually will next season. I'd be thrilled with him if he was the 7th man and got his PER up to like, 16.
Yeah he was trying to generate his own tough looks from three. With the players KU has, if he just lets the game come to him, he should be great.
The last time I can remember this much positive talk from around the program about a player sitting it was BMac.

But yeah I feel like there are some KU fans (not particularly on this board) that are setting themselves up for disappointment with Cunliffe. Hell of an athlete though so his potential is quite high.

Sam lacks basketball skills. Newman and Preston are black holes that aren't know for defense. I'm excited for Malik, clearly, given my current avatar. Also very excited for Preston, who is extremely talented. The potential for next year is through the roof, but we need Newman and Preston to "unpack their bags" like Josh did.
It won't be like Cheick. There isn't any murky area like there was with Cheick. He will have either made up the needed credits (probably) or he won't have. We know the NCAA isn't accepting the API credits. Possible he will need some summer school.

Self has his work cut out for him with Preston, Newman and Cunliffe.
Oh and Josh is definitely not a fair comparison. Not too many Josh level athletes in any given class.

They can crawl back into their hole any time now. No room to talk, considering Cal and Pastner, imo.
When you think about just how many players do play in the NBA (rotations are super deep) there is really no reason Frank can't stick. He's so good. If he wants a long career as a back-up PG I think he can do that. If he wants to start at some point though, Europe is his best bet. I wish him well no matter where he ends up. Great Jayhawk.
I think it's pretty likely that Tilmon will end up at Missouri. Hard to pass on starting...
He's really old for his class btw, I believe he will be 20 by the time he plays a game for KU.
Should get some fun ones out of Mitch this year. Kid is a very real talent that much is for sure. Issue has always been qualifying and effort. I imagine he will be pretty polarizing for the fan base.

Quickley is from MD. The last guard KU signed from MD...you guessed it....Josh Selby.

Fwiw the word on him back as far as when he committed to KU was that he needs to work on his shot. Considering where guys like Frank ended up, I'm confident he will improve it.
As far as defense, we only have the word of people that have seen him play full games, since defensive fundamentals will never be put in a highlight package. However I have read, from different places, that he is a very sound and committed defender.

Yep. He was extremely well coached in HS, not often that a coach formerly at a P5 school is coaching HS ball. So he already knows what it's like to play in a structured offense. No AAU distractions either.

Kid is a STUD BEAST. Unless KU lands Duval (which I think we all pretty much strongly doubt) then Garrett starts the season as the 1st guard off the bench with Graham, Newman and Vick starting.
Coleby is certainly good enough to be the 4th big. Just keep restin that knee big fella.

Preston definitely shouldn't and likely won't be playing any center. I think the staff is very much interested in another post player, in fact they have made it quite clear. They seem fine with it being more of a forward or a true center, so long as they get another post player. Tilmon would be the only hope at this point for a true back-up center. I think the team will be fine regardless of if it's Tilmon, Juiston, Brooks, Wooten, whoever.
Also for the record St Johns pulled their offer from Brown. ST JOHNS. I hope the kid turns his life around wherever he may end up.
He had a pretty bad game in their loss too.
He has a very troubled and violent criminal past among other issues. Basically, the last thing the program needs right now.

I would favour Tilmon because he has more time to develop whereas we know what Juiston is at this point more or less. If we are purely talking about next year only then I would say it's tougher to call.
