@approxinfinity Yeah they were violent in the first half.
Portugal look a lot better without Ronaldo as expected.

Oh my!
Speaking on his retirement for the first time
Behind ESPN paywall but if you have ESPN+ to watch KU then you can read it. I highly recommend reading it if you can and have the time.
Missouri looks like a decent rec league team. Gave up 89 against SEMO (they did win tho). They could not defend members of this board (slight exaggeration).
@FarmerJayhawk Was thinking Kema could be a likely one from what Swain was posting.
@Jethro Yes
@FarmerJayhawk More HS guys? Loooove getting the Cali RB.
Outcoached today, it happens.
@AsadZ said in After latest solid effort, Kansas freshman Ernest Udeh Jr. remains focused on the work:
Seems that Udeh's head is in the right place.
The way Bill talks about him is very positive per my Bill Self decoder ring.
@Crimsonorblue22 Oh my, she has been missing for a bit. :folded_hands:
Heck of a world cup for for Asia/Australia so far. Iran was actually the highest ranked AFC team coming in but they had a brutal group.
There is a really small chance we see 3 CAF teams advance but 2 is still good.

@BShark always! 🌾 I love unselfish, team first, Defensive guys best! I'm happy he is gaining confidence with his shot, it's looking good and at the right times.
Good team culture is important for sure. When you have a good enough foundation you can take chances on guys like MJ and Chris Johnson.
I hope MJ sticks around, he could use it.
@Crimsonorblue22 Juan
I picked a good game to go to for the first time in awhile. Went through the thread this morning, good stuff.
If Udeh can just consistently screen and learn the defense he can really help us this year. That might be a lot to ask but he is physically imposing.
What a story for Japan WOW. If you would have told anyone that Japan would lose to Costa Rica and advance before the tournament they would have called you crazy.
@Crimsonorblue22 Landen would be good as a coach. Oregon game was painful for sure.
I hope Costa Rica get another goal to send Spain packing. Punish them for trying to coast.
@BeddieKU23 Offensive rebounding is more of an effort stat and he is fine there. Dave was a better offensive rebounder as well but he wasn't abysmal defensively.
I do not trust Portugal's defense one bit against good teams.
@benshawks08 How many?
This would be in a rough order for me assuming guys like Neymar get healthy: Brazil, France, Spain, Argentina, England.
Morocco is an interesting dark horse they were very good in group play.

If KJ somehow becomes a threat to score we will be very dangerous.
If KJ had just a bit more polishing he would be outrageously lethal in the post... and also against footers.
What he lacks in size he makes up with strength, speed, and hustle.
Give him some post moves.. head/body/ball fakes... knowledge how to use his body to go into the defenders and then create just enough scoring space...
He would foul out all but a few 5s and all 5s would be afraid to guard him.
And he would OWN the boards!
Yes... that lethal!
Hey KJ... you out there? Read the book about Chab (Charles Barkley)!
I think a large part of us being better with KJ is simply the fact that he isn't playing inside. If you are posting a guy up he better be good at it. This way we keep the paint open.
I think rebounding will always be an issue for him. He tries so that isn't the issue.
Belgium are out what a blessing. Great WC so far, UEFA down bad between Belgium, Wales, Serbia and Denmark. France, Spain and England are good after that blah.
Canada need to get their players into big boy leagues, it would help.
@BeddieKU23 Seton Hall is 4-3. Hopefully they won't hit 5-3. I think KU wins by 10 but I wouldn't bet the spread.
@Jethro Well Jalen has 0 so I'd say Juan.
@rockchalkjayhawk It was very easy for me but I understand. I was definitely pulling for Canada but damn Croatia COOKED them.
REST IN PISS MEXICO YOU WON'T BE MISSED.
@Crimsonorblue22 Texas has a legitimate chance to go undefeated in league play but I'd guess they lose 1-2.
@BeddieKU23 Feels right to me unless we start getting bench production. I feel fairly confident we won't win the league.
I'm fairly excited for next year, depending on who stays.
Still things to work out but as of right now...
I looked up similar team profiles to the current KU team on Torvik. Unsurprisingly 2019 and 2021 KU are listed. Self one of the few coaches that even wins a tournament game. Some teams missed the tournament like 2018 LVille and PSU.
Things could change if we can get some bench production out of Joe/MJ, or really anything out of the 5 spot but that's what it looks like at the moment.
@BeddieKU23 If we play focused we should win, idc about what torvik et al say
Watched a fair bit of Missouri WSU last night since we play Missouri. Missouri can shoot it a bit but is horrible defensively. Wichita had a lot of unforced turnovers. In general Wichita has really fallen off.
@rockchalkjayhawk said in World Cup thread!:
Adams was way more than solid. way more. And i know you have a thing for McKinnie. ha! He's looked a bit slow and out of shape so far. But, ironically he's normally known for playing hard, and making some hard challenges.
I take most issue with Weah's play today. Shoot the freaking ball when you're at the net, man!!! Dude should have had three goals today. not even hard ones either.
W takes. Weah is not good.
@approxinfinity Adams is our best player and performed like it today imo. The three you mentioned and McKennie are all guys I like A LOT as well though.
Agree the corners STUNK and Sargent was fine :trade_mark:
With this midfield we can compete with anyone and could be a real threat to actually win the whole thing in 2026.
@rockchalkjayhawk said in World Cup thread!:
Holy jeebus.
Knockout stage!
Wow. The US tried so hard to mess that up. Pretty close to a PK for Iran at the end there. Hmmm. Close call.
Shocked they never really showed us a replay/offsides freezeframe of the Weah goal in the first half that was disallowed.
Jeez was that stressful!
I WANTED TO STRANGLE BERHALTER HOLY CRAP

Defensively ALL the frosh need some work.
I feel like Bill would bench Gradey more at times if he could get away with it lol.

Pre college coaching for most is not great, for all players. A coach told me, a past player that had good coaching said he was so far ahead just because of that.
Prep schools are a good idea for most high level kids. Coaching and competition levels are much better than you get playing regular HS ball.
Two of our signees this year are at prep schools. Chris is at one of the best in Montverde and Elmarko is going to South Kent School. Sounded like distance from home was important for him. Would imagine his mom moves to Kansas during his time here.
Sunrise definitely helped Gradey. MJ was at Prolific and Oak Hill so he bounced around a bit.

Rice just said he didn't have covid, just kidney stones. More to the story.
Kidney stones are a lot to deal with, and kinda crazy at his age.

I don't like our starters playing 30 minutes in this game, even with McCullar out. Yesufu doesn't bother me playing those minutes because he had to play multiple roles tonight, but definitely would've preferred Harris and Wilson being around 25 minutes.
It's also concerning that in a game like this, Clemence, Ejiofor, and Udeh played a combined 28 minutes and only took 3 shots. It's looking more and more like tge 5 spot is going to be an even bigger black hole on offense than when Landen Lucas was playing.
Hopefully this was Rice's coming out party and he can be the spark off the bench KU needs, but the 5 spot should be an even bigger concern after tonight's lack of offense behind KJ.
The main issue is KU simply did not have many scholarship players to go to off the bench. With Bob, Kevin and Cuffe (not that I think he is a factor but still he is on the roster) hurt KU had 6 scholarship guys at guard/wing. So we basically only had Rice on the bench. I think the guard and wing minutes were managed about as well as they could be. The only way to get them lower would have meant playing Jank before garbage time.
With the post I also would have liked to see a bit less KJ but they did also slide him to the 4 at times to help buy rest for our wings as well. It was a difficult balance, hopefully Kevin can go against SHU.

@BeddieKU23 nice to run some offense
Was mostly street ball with Norm. Beat Duke with street ball WOW SAD FOR DUKE.
@Crimsonorblue22 Thought you meant McCullar
kuballin10 absent tonight?

Love this lineup. Not much experience but Juan to hold it together and give them some confidence
Almost any line-up with Juan is fine. He stirs the drink.
@Crimsonorblue22 I know what you are insinuating and I disagree. He would have been good in this game.

MJ having fun tonight I think
This game shows just how on/off he can be. First half he was out of it.

Strongly agree. Game is over, keep him rested for SHU.
