A guy that shoots- - 29 ?% from the three on the year is killing us today. Seems like this happens a lot - -when some clown has a career day against us
Wide open.
Couldn't guard a paper bag
Losing on senior night will be so fitting
Right on cue to blow the game
More missed free throws no surprise
Go up strong rylan
Harris made a shot
Lol what a joke
Bout time mayo
Poor guard play
Guards are 4-19 from the field. It's like they don't even practice shooting
This game should be over and yet it's 9 at half and they have the momentum. I just don't get it. A dumb foul, a missed free throw and a bad shot later and here we go
KU has been looking at recent Miami 4 star SG decommit Matthew Able. The #30 ranked player in the 2025 class is a big 6'5 guard with a frame to continue filling out. His film looked good, a bit of an unorthodox perimeter shot but has a quick and solid release and looks to be a quality shooter from deep. I wouldn't be upset if they started recruiting him harder and offered. He's taken some visits recently to good programs Tennessee, Bama and Baylor this upcoming weekend. Seems like KU will have to make a move soon if they are going to.
I don't think he's gotten that in the last few years, it's been Juan or disaster. Needs to be corrected this offseason for sure.
Plays like this!
I'm not sure we can project Jackson as a starter but I remain hopeful he will be one of the 7 or 8 reliable players next year. I do agree he should be playing full time lead guard and where he played as a freshman was mostly due to the Morris situation. We shall see if they trust him to be the guy that takes over
Still been limited to that as of last update recently. It doesn't sound like he's done a whole lot so far
My immediate concerns with the guys who may return from this year's team.
Jackson- has lost close to a year of development due to injury. He said he's bulked up physically and got to watch the game from a different view. Will he be full go by the time offseason workouts start? You really have no idea what lies ahead from him which makes it a bit uneasy to project anything. He was an exciting prospect that needed skill development to maximize his athletic profile.
Jamari McDowell- had some decent moments as a freshman but struggled when conference play came around. Showed some defensive promise at times. Didn't seem to have a ton of skill on offense that we saw. Redshirted this year and given he was the odd man out in year 2 doesn't inspire confidence he's someone they plan to push into the rotation. He does seem like a good kid who's stayed engaged as a teammate. Interested to hear if any sort of light bulb has come on for him this year.
Zach Clemence- injured early in the year and hasn't returned since. Will he have an opportunity to stay or will he look to finish his career at at a more appropriate level where he might get to play and contribute more.. TBD
Bryson Tiller- joined the team early at semester and has not been cleared to play due to injury. I do find it concerning especially if he's not cleared by the time offseason work starts. He's another that's missed a year of playing. Self seems to love his skill set and what he could potentially be down the line. I guess an optimistic view would be that he could be a backup 4 man and reserve 5 man at times in year 1. TBD how good he will be next year.
Rakease Passmore- hasn't played much as a freshman. Has good size and athleticism. Has shown some promise defensively and at times has been aggressive on offense getting to the rim. Perhaps he will be one that jumps up with an offseason here. His shooting splits are not flattering for projecting something..Really TBD.
Flory Bidunga- clearly the future at the 5 for us next year. A big offseason in the weight room and skill development will give him a chance to anchor the post for us next season. He's a double double machine next yr.
Diggy Coit- will use his extra juco year and has been as advertised, an offensive spark plug with toughness that's a liability on defense at this level. Perhaps he will sharpen his skills with a full offseason here since he was a late arrival to campus. A solid veteran bench piece that can win you games when matchups and his shot is falling.
Based on the rumor mill I would not expect Griffen or Storr to return.
Which leads me to the point of all this. What we have returning does not inspire confidence. Sure I see value to having a bunch of these guys setting the culture and expectations for the newcomers however when it comes down to business, we have just a few that we can even project will be important pieces of this team. There's at least 2 guys that are really practice players at this level. If your trying to field a team around Peterson that can compete for championships you gotta up the talent and skill level and find the right FITS to compete. There's no question that hasn't been done the last two seasons relying on the portal for difference makers. So I'm very concerned we will grab a bunch of guys we think will be good here just to end up with buyers remorse once again. It's a big offseason in my opinion. I truly hope the staff learns from the past two seasons and finds a way to turn it around through recruiting and finding an identity that can get this ball rolling again back to the KU standard. Anyone else worried?
Diggy was great on offense against Houston but just about every big shot he made was followed by a shot he gave up on the other end. His effort was great though and I'm happy he's still fighting hard.
I do agree the Juan/Mayo thing is a major problem. Mayo wouldn't even look at the hoop to shoot on several occasions he normally lets it fly. They are also putting him in way too many situations where he has to dribble to make a play, and he's turned the ball over a ton lately. He doesn't seem to be a confident ball handler which is shocking to me.

I would add Passmore to the hopeful they return column.
Flory, Elmarko, Rakease, Diggy, Mari.
Incoming Peterson, Tiller, Calderon
Needs- starting 2 guard, starting 3, starting 4, backup big, best available.
What is your rotation with this group? Who is running starting PG? Peterson? I feel like Bill will play him off the ball. So I think you really need a starting PG. I don't imagine Peterson being the guy we initiate the offense with.
You're going to see KU spend big bucks on a PG in the portal imo. And my hope is they go PG/Wing/Wing/Wing/C like they have done in the recent past. By far Bill's most successful teams of recent memory have been that. 2018, 2020 and 2022 were all built around an interchangeable 3-wing lineup.
- PG: Transfer - Elmarko
- Wing: Peterson - Coit
- Wing: Passmore - Mari
- Wing: Transfer - Transfer (probably a more traditional PF type of guy in case we struggle against size)
- C: Flory - Tiller
I think its best we give the ball to Peterson as much as possible and let him create offense, so I have him as the PG. I truly think that's what needs to happen to unleash the offensive capability he will provide to this team.
PG- Peterson- Jackson
SG-TBD- Coit- McDowell- TBD
Wing- TBD- Passmore- TBD
PF/Wing- TBD- Tiller- Calderon
C- Bidunga- TBD- Tiller
I think Self should go get the best combo/SG guard fit he can find to pair with Peterson. Make that backcourt un-guardable with another athlete that can score from all 3 levels. I think we need to be at least 6 deep in the two backcourt positions.
At wing, I think you find a starter with experience and find another development talent to pair with Passmore.
At the 4 spot, spend big to get the right fit. I also prefer a bruiser type that can do the dirty work- board/defend etc. If you have a healthy Tiller and Calderon makes it to campus you have two very different players but high-level athletic traits.
At the 5, simply find a veteran bruiser that can give you 5 fouls and hold his own on both ends.
Those are my early thoughts
Yeah I'm keeping him in for now but expect that situation will have to be resolved. We also have to keep in mind we will be minus 1 scholarship to finish punishment so I believe we can carry 14 in total.
KU has its most important offseason coming up in Self's tenure. The portal hasn't worked the last two years and we cannot afford another year where we don't get the right guys
I would add Passmore to the hopeful they return column.
Flory, Elmarko, Rakease, Diggy, Mari.
Incoming Peterson, Tiller, Calderon
Needs- starting 2 guard, starting 3, starting 4, backup big, best available.
He did not appear to be confident last night at all. Passed up several 3's he normally would have the green light on. His ball handling has become a major concern out there.
Rebounding was a major concern coming into the year that wasn't properly addressed in offseason talent acquisitions. We had Hunter and nobody else proven with no expected big bumps from transfers or returnees. However, a lot of boards that went Houston's way last night were simply effort based and anticipation. That to me is mostly coaching. Some don't have it but Sampson coaches rebounding which then trickles down into other areas. There might be a thing or two Self can learn from his peer.
Turnovers.. I don't have an answer for why 23-24 year old adults continue to make the same careless unforced mistakes. Dribbling, passes over the top of defenders, fumbling the ball out of bounds, stepping on the out of bounds line. These things continue to show up in every game. Many of them were avoidable.
Yeah, there was plenty of effort overall, but execution is poor. I think this sets them up to at least have a punters chance of winning on Senior Night.
Closer game then I expected by a wide margin, so I'll take the moral victory. However, having watched them give up 20 offensive boards and turn the ball over so carelessly all night just makes it all the more frustrating to understand. That game was once again winnable, and the guys just don't seem to have the competitiveness to overcome. The same mistakes get made over and over from the same individuals. It's like their allergic to playing well together.
Dumbass
Very convenient foul call
Big improvement there from him
Laughable turnover zeke
Comical
Legit dumbest team
Good effort to get the lead now just freaking rebound
Not sure this team has seen a weight room
So many turnovers it's baffling
Make a 3 then give up a 3. Sigh
Storr was clobbered on the arm. Fran is such an idiot
They have given up already
I pray it's not like last year but it certainly feels more then possible. Sigh
It is crazy fans have gone after players after games with threats etc and that's not right at all. I guess we no longer have the prim and proper fanbase, we have examples now of our fans acting the same way as fanbases we loath.
It would be nice to know what thought process Mayo had on that shot.. That was a bad take. Was that the play drawn up out of the timeout?
How many years have we been running the switching defense now? How many times Saturday did David Coit get stuck on a guy 1 ft+ taller than him and that possession ended up negatively for KU, seemed like a lot not just in the former but that our switching defense created poor defensive matchups that were exploited.
Lack of adjustment to Tech shooting 3's and help defense has been a pretty systemic issue this year (Creighton, BYU among examples).
Oh yeah that's certainly a real thing. When players at KU play with confidence you can see it. There's very little of it these days. It's time for a reset on many fronts after this season
