Mari finally did something
Big time shot Tre
Wow that's a terrible sequence. Throw it into a triple team then give them a 3 pt play For NOTHING
Tiller is big time
Pathetic
Travel. They tied up theirselves you blind guys
Calderon
At this point Bill does it on purpose. Yes let's literally put two guys in who can't do anything
Fake foul just to keep the game close. Good grief
Big one from council. He really is tyshawn
We better score on this possession because we are looking like we bout to give this up
Council cant shoot. How do we do this evrry yr
Nice
Yikes kohl
Bench at 20 minutes 3 pts and 2 assists. Nothing good to say so just leave it there
Ugly end to it. Had them on the ropes and now it will be tight
Unreal
Glad to see one fall for any guard
If Council cant make that in-rythm 3. Yikes
3 on 5 lineup. Redic
Can't let down now. Momentum shifting
Get used to it. We only have 4 guys who can score
Crazy we are extending the lead playing 3 and 4 on 5 on offense. If you know, you know.
Bout time they called a foul on flory man. Fouled him entire possession
Defense definitely enforcing their will
You cant play mari. Stop bill
White and Flory dominating. Great to see
Nice job flory. Free throws..
Wow! 6 pt possession
Shocking they got it right. Ok
Wow flory. Big time and intentional foul
2 on Tiller already. What a theme every game
And 1 ref. You blind
Clobbered the guy at the rim
Bidunga foul trouble again. Good job flory
If our game plan on d is to have Burton switched onto our bigs every possession I might as well turn this off. Amateur hour defensive scheme
Defense is optional today so far. Until they settle in and make some havoc we will continue to play behind once again
We look terrible. Notre Dame clearly wants it more
So KU has a game today... and tomorrow.. and Wednesday apparently.
Notre Dame, Syracuse then, who knows ? Who we play on Wednesday depends on:
Each team will play three guaranteed games. Following the conclusion of each team's second game, the win-loss records will determine who makes a trip to the championship game or the third-place game on Nov. 26. Teams that don't make the championship or third-place games will play in consolation games.
Championship game is scheduled for 9:30 EST Wednesday night. 3rd place game before that. Console games are mostly Wednesday but potential for Turkey Day as well.
I see KU gets $1 million in NIL for playing. I wonder how much of that is going to Peterson who won't even play. Only sort of kidding there. As I was writing this, I saw the Big-12 entered into some agreement today with this tournament going forward, ensuring 8 automatic spots for Big-12 teams. Can't be a bad thing besides having to play teams in the Big-12 even more. Not sure that's smartly planned out but who cares the schools getting a fat check.
Feels like we majorly lucked out on opponent in both known games. Here's a list of teams in it. A good portion of these teams would beat KU if we played them without Peterson. Some of them probably even with.
Alabama
Auburn
Baylor
Creighton
Gonzaga
Houston
Iowa State
Kansas
Maryland
Michigan
Notre Dame
Oregon
Rutgers
San Diego State
St. John's
Syracuse
UNLV
Tennessee
No idea what to expect today. Notre Dame is ranked #73 via Kenpom. Burton is an All-ACC guard in his 3rd season. He has led them in 4 of 5 games scoring. They lost by 1 to Ohio St, otherwise they have beaten no one. They shoot 40% from 3, just a few more makes on same volume as KU, so they don't seem to live and die by the perimeter. Carson Towt has been a dominate rebounder so far (4th nationally at 12.5 a game).
This looks like a game that KU is just going to have to enforce their athletic advantage. ND only has 6 blocked shots so far in 5 games so it would seem we can exploit them at the rim. They are a very young team as well. Looks like they have played a lot of guys (11 at 8mpg or more) so far.
Seems like a winnable game today but I doubt it will be easy. We have to prove we can beat someone with a pulse first. Tomorrow is harder, Cuse is #61 on Kenpom with similar ranked offense. Another winnable game but will the guys have enough in the tank with our depth issues already popping up. Going to be interesting to see how these guys survive 3 games in 3 days.
Super talented kid. We will have our hands full facing them.
The way they play Self doesn't have answers for
No Peterson next week.
I think it's way early for that position but the trio of Haggerty/Johnson/Bashir will not be easy to matchup against. Without Peterson, sure just about everyone in the Big-12 will be better.
They don't play a ranked team until January so hard to put much stock into these early games. They can score but they can't defend anyone either.
Diggy did the right thing IMO. Good for him
They have proven they are the #2 and #3 options, they just need their batman back
Agreed, his footwork and handling has improved a ton.
Yeah, there's a lot of uncertainty with the Peterson situation until we see him out there again. Self has created that with the lack of transparency & honesty. We get vague updates that lead to all the speculation.
The scouting report on him is he is extremely competitive, so I agree he wants to be out there but it's a delicate situation due to many factors having nothing to do with KU. He's got a brand and career ahead of him and this kind of injury could derail the path they are on. In a stacked draft class he certainly has incentive to get back out there. I'm not sure how much his stock would truly be hurt by sitting the rest of the season. He's been heavily scouted already but certainly there would be questions. Certainly the only real thing that he can lose is $ in the short term. Hypothetically if he sat the season to get healthy and prepared for the draft I still believe he'd be in the Top 6 picks.
Hopefully he's out there again soon. There isn't much to say until there's a definitive timeline for his return.
This is a bubble team at best without him for an extended period of time and even that might be pushing it. We are not going to see KU play like they did against Duke most nights. People can cling to moral victory all they want, it was still a 12-point defeat and for the final 25 minutes of the game KU was not in a real serious position to win the game. They kept it close as much as they could but Duke was always in control (as were the refs).
We all hope the biggest benefit right now without Peterson is forcing guys to step up. White certainly has, Bidunga has when he's actually on the court. Tiller and Council show flashes. The rest have a ways to go. We have clearly seen who's ready and who's not. I really hope this adversity helps them become the team they want to be, but we need Peterson in order to get there.
Got a chance to rewatch the game and the 2nd half finally.
I'm not as optimistic as others are which is okay. I hope that changes but so far I'm seeing a lot of overall similarities to the past few years.
Foul trouble really forced Self's hand with subs late in that first half and seemed to completely disrupt the momentum they had going. Some individuals are going to have to figure out how to defend without fouling. We saw first hand we very little depth once again. Not having a 3rd big that is trusted is definitely a big one. Elmarko and Mari do not seem capable of playing any kind of extended minutes.
We very well could have won this one with Peterson. He changes everything and without him right now we are seeing a lot of weaknesses. Until he returns we have a clear cap on our ceiling.
Defensively I thought they competed hard when defending regularly but the double teams on Boozer were exploited and they made us pay just about every time. A lot of the double teams just seemed unnecessary, and they weren't working and there weren't adjustments. Felt like we made plays easier for Boozer and others by constantly being in chase mode on the rotations.
It's clear this bunch is not an efficient shooting group outside the paint. Way too many missed opportunities from the perimeter from guys we expect to produce. Council's shooting has to to improve as every team we've played has already identified him as the weak point on the perimeter. You can see the lack of confidence when he shoots as well.
Hopefully this game was beneficial for next weeks continued ACC tour.
Mbiya already is jacked city. He's just supremely raw with skill at this point. Certainly, seems like a good mold of clay. Not sure we'll ever see the fruits of the labor from him. Doesn't sound like he plans on staying around for years.
Tiller is 20 years old and yes he enrolled early last year to get ahead on rehab. Certainly seemed like KU lucked out there with how talented he is and how high his ceiling is. Can you get him back for a 2nd year is the big question already. I would not assume anyone on this current roster is coming back because that's the reality we are dealing with now.
Kudos to those that watched til the end. Sounds like they gave what they got but couldn't execute in the last 5 minutes. Foul Trouble in the front court is a major issue. The refs sucked but this is not a disciplined team when it comes to fouls.
Tiller has fouled out in both games against P4 competition. Flory has 3 or more fouls in all but 1 game so far and makes a lot of careless fouls that take him out of the game.
It sure looks like we only have 7 players if we ever get Peterson back. Elmarko and Mari are unplayable imo. Neither has developed a lick here.
We might never know. All he does is foul
