I will guess that KU was hoping for restitution and a few games suspension vis-a-vis the car but, once the FBI investigation was uncovered, KU was blindsided by the potential extent.

Absolutely, the updates provided by Self seemed optimistic. I think we talked extensively as a group about "time served" as the season went on being a sufficient suspension. The NCAA works in mysterious ways as we all know.

Preseason Hype/Discussion • Sep 11, 2018 03:26 PM

@BShark

That was the PR "your not coming" back move. He was caught up in the FBI stuff. I don't think Smart was taking him back

2019 Recruiting • Sep 11, 2018 03:22 PM

Didn't see JRE's visit schedule listed...

1st up was Notre Dame last weekend

Villanova (Sept. 14), North Carolina (Sept. 21), Kansas (Sept. 28), and Arizona (Oct. 12). I thought KU was going to be the last visit. Looks like the squid gets the last pitch, ugh

@Kcmatt7

Davis went pro.

If Jones is ready to start the season I see a lineup of Coleman, Jones, Roach, Osetkowski, Sims. If Jones is eased into competition slide in Mitrou-Long into the starting lineup. That 4 man backcourt can compete with anyone in the Big-12 but only if all 4 are the best versions of themselves. I was never high on Roach but he improved a lot last season and I see him carrying the team as a senior.

I have no idea how good the freshman are. 4 top 100 kids, you figure at least one can contribute high level minutes. They will be a young squad when going to their bench

@BeddieKU23 If he can mostly be the same player he was, they have great back court depth. If Courtney Ramey has to be the 4th guard and they basically don't have a 5th guard* that really impacts their rotations and ability to keep guys fresh.

*Febres and Mitrou-Long are not good enough

Interesting I thought Mitrou-Long was pretty good as a Soph. He averaged 15 ppg in 6 games against P5 competition (West Virginia, Iowa St, Minnesota, Michigan, Arkansas, Villanova) being the competition. Had 14 against West Virginia, 19 against Iowa St

I like that you have West Virginia 6th. I just have a hard time putting them higher with their guard options being so limited. They are going to rely on Ahmad, West & Punkate a ton.

It could bite me because they have been consistent under Huggins but I just don't see how they are near the top of the league with that back court.

If Huggins makes this team work he definitely earns his checks. I know he was high on Doomes who had to sit last season. Beetle and Harler are nothing special, Beetle can score some but he's nothing like Carter/Miles. My Brewster friend has good things to say about Culver who should be ahead of the curve a little bit taking that post-grad year to work on his academics.

Good for him, I hope is able to return. How effective he will be after what he went through is another story. Big inspiration for the team

Tech will be fine, they won’t replicate last years success but its still a team capable of competing in the league and making the tournament.

Evans & Zaire Smith are tough to replace. Their biggest issue will be at PG. If the backup Moretti hasn’t improved a good bit they will struggle. It’s not a stretch to say they have the weakest PG position in the league. Evans was in the mold of Frank Mason for his team. They don’t have a Devonte waiting in the wings.

Culver is being mocked in the first round of the draft right now. Owens and Mooney are grad transfers that will likely start. I thought Francis showed some flashes of why he was a Top 40 recruit out of HS and should have a bigger role this season. I don't see a true power forward on the squad which really hurts them. I bet they are hoping Top 50 recruit Khavon Moore can fill that Zaire Smith role and downgrade the need for two true posts. Odiase returns for his 15th season. One time KU target years back Corphew ends up here. Seems like a Beard special!

Preseason Hype/Discussion • Sep 11, 2018 01:52 PM

Is Andrew Jones a possibility to return to Texas? That would change things for them potentially. 9 guys freshman or Soph so their's a boom or bust potential with them. With Smart, the smart money is always on bust but we’ll see

Preseason Hype/Discussion • Sep 11, 2018 01:51 PM

TCU is the team that has the highest ceiling I think of the others. Until we see what their frontcourt looks like its hard to say what they will do. 5 guys who haven’t played are in the mix. They will have plenty of depth but as usual I expect 1-2 guys to redshirt.

@Kcmatt7

I don't trust Smart to make them a good offensive team. Just look what he couldn't do with Allen and Bamba. The Coleman/Long/Roach backcourt could be salty though. I thought Sims flashed as well. They still have Slow O (Osetkowski) in the post

They should be better, a couple of key transfers eligible. Wigginton & Lard are 1st team Big-12 candidates. Their starting 5 is better then OU, OSU, Tech & Baylor. Should be interesting to see what Prohm does with talent

2019 Recruiting • Sep 11, 2018 11:16 AM

TCU grabbed a couple of 4 star perimeter players over the weekend. Dixon continues to recruit at a high level. So far the Big-12 really hasn't done much in 2019 recruiting

Preston had been declared eligible until KU found something odd about his car and reported it to the NCAA. As far as I remember, Preston was really not declared ineligible by the NCAA, in an abundance of caution KU simply chose not to play him waiting for a ruling from the NCAA which did not come and once Preston left it became moot. Same case with Alexander who was never really declared ineligible but probably would have been given enough time.

You noted the difference in the situations, KU self reported the issues with Preston.

2019 Recruiting • Sep 11, 2018 10:15 AM

Update on a prospect KU has kept in contact with. Kai Jones has visited Florida St and now will visit Syracuse. I'm told from my Brewster friend that Cuse could seal the deal here

@JayHawkFanToo

The situations are not the same though which I think is important to consider here. Preston was ineligible to play after KU reported his issues. KU needed the NCAA to clear him, they never did and Billy ran off.

The distinction with Silvio at least to our knowledge currently is the fact Silvio is eligible. There's more to this story that's being kept private to the public which I have no issue with. I know fans and media would like to know whether Silvio and KU is free and clear in the FBI case + NCAA involvement (if any). Until there's a change in this I see Silvio playing. He's eligible, why would KU hold back if they have nothing to hide or fear? That last part is the most important, if they hold him out I see far more issues then just Silvio. KU would be conceding that there is an issue that is being investigated and that can of worms is one I'm hoping we can avoid.

Latest Scuttlebutt on DaSousa Please • Sep 10, 2018 03:05 PM

@BShark

Certainly there are situations we may see that especially if Doke is in foul trouble (inevitable). Given he has time to acclimate himself here with a full off-season I would expect he would be the first option off the bench. Mitch is another situational type player and McCormack I just expect he'll struggle adapting to defending at a level we would need consistently.

I hope he improves his defensive awareness and becomes more comfortable with all of KU's sets. There's no excuse this time around for Silvio. He had plenty of flashes as a sped-up freshman. If he's improved both area's he makes a formidable trio and gives Self the ability to specifically game plan for teams with Mitch/Dave

Latest Scuttlebutt on DaSousa Please • Sep 10, 2018 02:58 PM

@drgnslayr

You nailed it!

I'm sure KU has behind the scenes done its due diligence here. We know Silvio won't play if there is any risk this blows back on the university. The program won't be sacrificed so he can suit up. There's grey area here I think regardless.

We will know our answer by November whether Self and the University plans to risk playing him. If he's out there I will place my support behind it. If he's sitting then that can of worms will definitely be open with speculation.

Latest Scuttlebutt on DaSousa Please • Sep 10, 2018 02:40 PM

Silvio is good enough to start this season. Let that sink in.

If he gets to play (which I expect) he's coming off the bench unless injury (which we don't want). It will be interesting to see what he can give us in the rotation.. I'm thinking T-Rob Soph year or something like Tony Bradley gave UNC a few years back on the NC champ squad. You have a starter level player subbing in so there should be minimal drop-off overall when either Dedric or Doke leave the lineup.

Silvio is the key to post depth. He can play either forward position as we've seen. That makes him valuable in the rotation. I was impressed with his ability to impact the game last season. Let's hope he gets to show off his game again this year

Believe me he burned so many bridges. He quit on the team in October after a 2-5 start, stopped recruiting, started getting into arguments with fans etc. That relationship was toxic. Pissed off boosters which we all know will get you the can.

Look at what he left on the Offensive Line. KU's line might actually be a better unit. Until Taggart get's rid of Jimbo's players he's in survival mode

Maybe I'm wrong but I don't believe it will be on your tv unless ESPN + was something you can add to your cable package. For that information you would have to contact your cable provider. Safe bet is you can stream the games on your computer provided you have decent internet speeds. This will just be a seperate online streaming option for you. Lots of games will be on ESPN + especially when College Basketball gets rolling.

ESPN plus • Sep 07, 2018 05:27 PM

@jayballer73

Depends on what device you would watch it on.

For phones & tablets its an ESPN app you download right onto your device that plays the games. For me I was always asked to enter my cable package information to login. After that it was just finding the game on the home screen.

For computers, ESPN has icons on the main page with "ESPN + and Watch"
!0_1536341199115_upload-fcec0c33-8fdb-4a5e-8821-4f2de87c56f4 ↗

I believe they will ask you to sign up for an ESPN account, purchase ESPN + then login and you should be able to access the games right from there.

If you have other questions feel free to ask

About 13 programs including KU will be in to watch Lester Quinones, Top 100 guard.

2019 Recruiting • Sep 07, 2018 03:35 PM

@Kcmatt7

This is the first time I've seen KU involved honestly. Most of the info I've seen on him involves Alabama, Memphis, Indiana.

I would be surprised if Watford picked a school outside of those 4 considering they have spent considerable time recruiting him since AAU.

Alabama was the first school to recruit him, not a surprise given he's a bama native. Watford's brother played at Indiana. Memphis under the new regime has put themselves right there and may even lead for him. FSU & LSU (he's unofficially visited) are looking for official visits.

2019 Recruiting • Sep 07, 2018 03:27 PM

@jayballer73

We are visiting his school, its not a in-home as far as I can see.

I'm not going to speculate into this. Self does this every year.

KU will visit Trendon Watford, #22 ranked player, 6'9 PF from Alabama.

Memphis, Alabama, FSU, Indiana among others in this. First time I've seen KU making an effort

Best offense in NCAA basketball • Sep 06, 2018 02:00 PM

@BShark

Good point. Not having players has been an issue. Playing 4 guards/wings also had a big impact the past few seasons.

Since that 16 season the defense has trended in the wrong direction, #24 & #47 (Kenpom). It's amazing to think the #47 ranked defense made it to the Final 4 last season.

It will be interesting to see what some of the new guys can do defensively. I know Dedric is a good to elite rebounder and so is his brother. Dedric can also protect the rim some which really adds an element we have lacked the past few seasons. Doke for his size is neither a good rebounder or rim protector. I don't expect that changes but there's always hope another off-season and some NBA motivation will do the trick. I think he lacks the instincts though so we get what we get with him.

Just having two legitimate post players above 6'9 in the lineup I think makes a big difference in how teams will be able to attack KU. We have depth and size to bring in past the starters. Our frontcourt reminds me of North Carolina a few years back. Tremendous advantage to have despite the game trending away from teams that rely on bigs

Best offense in NCAA basketball • Sep 06, 2018 12:53 PM

BShark said:

I actually worry more about the offense. I need to see this team in action.

Yeah it will be interesting to see how the pieces fit on offense. I'm actually not concerned about the offense overall but I do think its going to be a unit that progresses over the season. We have 10 guys who could start almost anywhere which is insane to think about. Self has always figured it out especially when he has the talent to work with.

The defense worries me more because Self teams have trended in the wrong direction for a few years now. Whether its rule changes or just the type of players he's been getting the defense has slipped. On paper we should see improvement. The Lawson's bring a physicality that was missing on both sides. Going back to a traditional 2 big lineup will just put more size on the floor. Maybe the biggest improvement defensively will be rebounding. I think this team can hover over 40 rebounds a game as a team. That hasn't happened in near a decade. I think the defense is the key to the season, we see improvements in certain area's and this is a no-brainer championship contender

Best offense in NCAA basketball • Sep 06, 2018 10:34 AM

We should have a top 10 offense. I'd like to see our defense there as well. There's no excuse for this squad to be subpar or an average defense with the athletes we have.

Yes guys I know it'searly yet BUT : • Sep 06, 2018 10:31 AM

My gut says we get 2 of the 4 listed. JRE & Williamson sign in the fall

Hurt's recruitment goes into the spring and if Memphis has a good season that's going to be something to watch. I don't see any reason to worry about him until he actually decides what he's doing
