JOSH SIGNS WITH ARMSTRONG • Apr 17, 2017 06:16 PM

finally that is over. he actually had some KU fans wondering

Marcus Garrett SR Highlights • Apr 17, 2017 06:15 PM

@JayHawkFanToo

He definitely feels like a steal right now. Of course things can change once we see him on the court but Marcus just looks the part of a player we are going to really enjoy for 3-4 years. I felt similarly when we landed Vick that we had stole one away from under people. Vick is still on his way to proving that. I expect a big year from him. If Svi does not return he really has an opportunity to put himself on the NBA radar next summer.

@JayHawkFanToo

Exactly. If we hadn't gone after the Lawson brothers I'm sure Shakur would be visiting this weekend and our chances would be greater. But he see's a crowded future ahead of him and is going to end up where he can produce now with just the 2 years. Seems like Iowa St has this one in the bag now.

We still need to get ourselves a big that can provide depth and push for minutes. Tilmon has to be option #1 now. Fight for minutes behind Doke now and possibly take his spot playing alongside Dedric in 2018-19.

Wooten • Apr 17, 2017 03:22 PM

@bmensch1

Read Arkansas was in play. Nothing about KU from what I've seen. I think that one is something the staff has passed on. If he's still around after some of the other domino's fall off the board like Tilmon, Thomas Allen and Svi's decision maybe they get back involved.

@jayballer54

Don't underestimate KU with Tilmon. We have a long-standing relationship with him. Getting him in for a visit is the key here. Missouri definitely has more to offer (playing time) but if he thinks Martin is going to develop him he's straight bat crazy and deserves that situation if he chooses it

Malik Newman Offensive Highlights • Apr 17, 2017 03:17 PM

@BShark

Which is why I'm really interested in seeing how his defense improves. I think there is plenty of evidence to support Malik's new situation providing him an opportunity to be a completely different player then he was in Mississippi.

Whatever ale'd him, from injuries, pressure to produce in his home state, a poor offensive system, not surrounded by enough play-makers, he's getting the best of everything at KU (provided he's healthy). I do think Malik is motivated to prove himself, he was always a competitive player in HS and his situation to date must be very humbling. I expect he'll be the top transfer in America this season

@BShark

yeah the Lawson brothers have eliminated his impact and minutes

Which sucks, I don't want him at ISU

Marcus Garrett SR Highlights • Apr 17, 2017 03:10 PM

@justanotherfan

Great question. I don't know for certain but it would seem as though Preston will be the overwhelming favorite to have a greater impact next season. Pairing him next to a monster at the Center spot plus 3 NBA caliber perimeter players should help him as Jackson was helped by the players around him this year. Billy & Marcus are likely to have different roles. Preston is most likely a shoe-in to start (if we take Self's comments about him after Bragg's departure to heart) and Garrett will be battling for rotation minutes at one of the wing spots.

Statistically Preston is likely to have the bigger impact getting more minutes. Garrett will most likely try and bring consistency to the bench rotation providing solid defense, some scoring and facilitating. Both have chances to be irreplaceable options on this team as Self has more depth and options to work with.

I'd say in the future Garrett will have a great chance once he's fully acclimated into the system and is counted on for production. Pairing him with the Lawson Brothers, Cunliffe and whoever else returns from the 2017-18 roster will be an interesting and exciting core of talent.

Marcus Garrett SR Highlights • Apr 17, 2017 02:32 PM

@justanotherfan

I expect a lot out of Preston, he's highly ranked for a reason. But we are getting one season out of him (getting the Lawson transfer sealed that) so I think when its all said and done Garrett will have a more lasting impact in the program

There's a lot to like about Garrett and it seems like he will have some kind of role as a freshman but will be counted on in 2018-19 and beyond. It is a bold prediction but I'm confident he's going to be a good one here

Billy Get Buckets Preston SR Mixtape • Apr 17, 2017 01:12 PM

@dylans

It's Malik in the picture

Matt Says Tilmon will visit KU unless something happens. With Tilmon that could be anything.

Juiston might be here this weekend for a visit..

Billy Get Buckets Preston SR Mixtape • Apr 17, 2017 10:08 AM

@HighEliteMajor

Cunliffe had a PER of 10 in his limited time at Arizona St. The sample size definitely is small with him, freshman playing big minutes on a terrible team, inconsistent shooting games, leaves at semester. We'll see what role he settles into once eligible.

Billy Get Buckets Preston SR Mixtape • Apr 17, 2017 10:02 AM

Preston is a top 10 talent. I like how we are being guarded with this one. I think that comes from seeing the disappointment of past freshman big's that came in with significant hype.

He's got all the talent in the world if he puts it together under Self. He's better then Alexander, Bragg, Diallo, any recent OAD big we've had not named Embiid. The first couple months if he's here will be good and bad. If he settles in and finds his role on this team he's got a chance to make KU one of the top-3 teams next year.

At this moment a lot is riding on him to be eligible and be a starter. Given what we know about him that's asking a lot but again the talent is there. Self has his work cut out for him with this guy. Untapping his potential and molding him into this team is paramount

Malik Newman Offensive Highlights • Apr 17, 2017 09:54 AM

Malik is similar to Mason in the fact that he knows how to score, that's what he's wired to do. He was the #1 HS player for a while and it makes sense if you watch highlights how easily he can get where he wants and score

I'm not worried about him scoring because it comes so natural to him. I can only imagine the year off to get stronger, learn the offense and work on his game has refined his game significantly.

Malik will have to prove himself defensively, he gave up on a lot of plays after being beaten off the dribble at Miss St. He has good lateral quickness so hopefully he's been coached to use that ability. I expect his motor will be completely different here so I'm interested in seeing how he transitions from just a scorer to a more complete player.

Marcus Garrett SR Highlights • Apr 17, 2017 09:45 AM

Garrett will end up the best recruit in the KU class. He might even end up one of the best in the entire class when its all said and done

Marcus Garrett SR Highlights • Apr 17, 2017 09:43 AM

@justanotherfan

There are some video's showing his defensive ability on youtube

Billy Get Buckets Preston SR Mixtape • Apr 14, 2017 11:00 PM

@Fightsongwriter said in Billy Get Buckets Preston SR Mixtape:

He looks so much bigger than the other players. He will have to improve on his explosiveness to pull off the same moves at next level. There will now be a bigger guy than him at the rim and just as big and quick on the perimeter.

Josh was far more athletic IMHO.

Josh is far more athletic then most players. He's also a guard. Preston has 2+ inches and 30-35 pounds more weight too

Billy Get Buckets Preston SR Mixtape • Apr 14, 2017 10:59 PM

This is all from a kid who has barely set foot in a weight room. Seriously, Billy has his physique with minimal help from anyone much less Hudy who will get him for one summer and season.

His perimeter skills remind of some stars of the NBA. Will he defend, will he take shots within the offense are my major questions. We will see what Self can do with him for the short time he gets

SVI WILL TEST THE WATERS • Apr 13, 2017 11:18 AM

@KUSTEVE

I don't believe so, its more likely Vick if that was the case.

Svi almost went through the process last year. If he comes back he starts unless Vick makes a jump that Svi can't match.

Thoughts on Graham/Svi decision • Apr 13, 2017 10:00 AM

@dylans

Grudgingly I'd say Tilmon. I think the difference maker is length. You plug Tilmon into the rotation behind Doke and this team always has a defensive presence on the court. A presence that's likely to be the difference in a March game when we need our big's to produce.

I love Shakur's game and I think he's a A++ character player that has a chip on his shoulder. He also has a unique skill set for a big (well 6'7) player that could absolutely thrive at KU. The fact that he's 6'7 and we already have Lightfoot at similar height makes it hard to add a 2nd shorter big.

Shakur is a superior athlete that does play bigger then his height so its hard to knock him just because he's shorter. I think he'll provide weak-side rim protection and be a great glue guy that plays for the team. His vision is also something that can't be overlooked especially for a front court player that can be counted on to be unselfish with the ball.

Shakur is the more ready all around player if his elite rebounding and passing skills translate immediately.

But Tilmon offers the length and defensive presence that this team needs to truly be a complete team.

Thoughts on Graham/Svi decision • Apr 13, 2017 09:44 AM

ISU board talked about Shakur not being the type to commit on a visit. KU wanted him to visit this weekend but he already had the ISU visit lined up. They think he'll visit KU next weekend. Maybe we get the last visit and can have the lasting impression?

ISU has beat us to the punch every step of the way with his recruitment. ISU board has been stressing that relationships are key with him from what his Hutch coaches say (Shakur doesn't talk much about recruiting) and ISU has basically been there a lot and he's noticed. That's what they are saying.

Obviously ISU insider is going to paint ISU's approach but everyone knows KU got into this late and its going to come down to what situation he wants more.

The Hutch coaches think he wants to win and make the NCAA tourney, something he'll get at KU. ISU is on some transfers but this team is going to be on the bubble all year with them losing so much from this years squad. Shakur can start at ISU and have little resistance for playing time but won't win as much. At KU he could carve out a rotation and we all know the situation is bigger and better.

@Kcmatt7

Yeah it seems that way.

SVI WILL TEST THE WATERS • Apr 12, 2017 07:08 PM

@brooksmd

Self didn't seem concerned last night commenting on Jackson that he was holding anything up.

But your absolutely right about Svi, if he's not invited to the Combine he will have his answer pretty much. We should know fairly soon after the deadline if he gets an invite.

@drgnslayr

That's a nice dream you typed up. Billy guarding the SF spot would be a nightmare. I think he's going to be the new age 4 at the next level, if he matures enough to make it and last.

Tilmon is more of a 5, not sure how he'd work alongside Doke but that's why the coaches get paid the big bucks.

@BShark

Tilmon reminded me of Deyonta Davis who went pro after 1 year at Michigan St. If Tilmon gets back to what got him so highly ranked then he's got a high ceiling. I know there are some that say his offense is limited but the kid has some nice post moves but wasn't always consistent with them. He runs the floor well, he plays above the rim and has good instincts on defense. Pairing him with Doke and Coleby is not fair for opponents. We can all dream..

@BShark

He did drop in Rivals. Part of it has been injury related. That shoulder injury he had took a long time to heal and usually kids drop anytime there is a injury involved (unless your Harry Giles with Nike of course).

I think the kid hasn't gotten back into the groove but even before he was hurt I didn't think he was as good as his ranking. He has great value defensively right now and needs a good system to develop his offense. KU can offer him a lot, maybe not the 30 minutes a night but maybe a better trajectory for development

@BShark

What, a level headed decision?? No way jose

@Hawk8086

Illinois was more about the assistant coach they had on Groce's staff that he was close with. Once he was let go with the coaching change it made sense Tilmon would look around if he didn't like Underwood's pitch. KU was on his short list first time around so we have to believe he's at least entertaining us again

@Kcmatt7

Nope, the staff has visited him plenty over the recruiting cycles though. We'll see if friday's visit gets us a visit

SVI WILL TEST THE WATERS • Apr 12, 2017 06:44 PM

@BShark

Well when you recruit 7 post players over him he got the message LOL.

Might make Kentucky more attractive for Bamba now..

@drgnslayr

This looks like a KU/Fizzou fight for Tilmon. We'll see what happens. Howard visits him friday

SVI WILL TEST THE WATERS • Apr 12, 2017 06:40 PM

@BShark

I think you could also say they just were told behind the scene's they were not coming back. Once you burn that bridge with Self he quietly makes it go away. Tharpe had a child to provide for, Greene clearly thought his shooting ability would get him farther in life then it did. Both cases I think they went pro because they thought they could make it. Happens all the time. Isaac Humphries just went pro from Kentucky after averaging 3 points a game.

SVI WILL TEST THE WATERS • Apr 12, 2017 06:37 PM

I'm happy for Svi, he almost tested the waters last year but made the right decision. Now he's in a better position to see where he stands with GM's, scouts, and his fellow wing prospects. Given how young he is I'm sure there will be some intrigue with some teams that like to draft international prospects.

KU will welcome him back if he doesn't feel leaving now is the best thing for him to do. He can come back and help this team compete for a championship.

SVI WILL TEST THE WATERS • Apr 12, 2017 06:31 PM

@Blown

What you hope is Svi stays in contact with Self so that he knows what direction he might be going in if he wants to recruit in case he does stay in. Self has wings so losing Svi is not a loss we can't replace with players ready to step in.

SVI WILL TEST THE WATERS • Apr 12, 2017 06:30 PM

@Blown

I think your choosing to look at it in a different sense. Self isn't going to say, you go pro you can't come back. That's not how he does things and I don't know any coach that has a player in a position to be drafted that would give an ultimatum like that to a player that could still come back to College and help the program win games

SVI WILL TEST THE WATERS • Apr 12, 2017 06:26 PM

@Blown

I don't believe that's how it works. Svi isn't doing anything out of normal where his scholarship should be in jeopardy. This is the game coaches are put in with the way the rules are now set up.

SVI WILL TEST THE WATERS • Apr 12, 2017 06:25 PM

@Kcmatt7

Yeah I don't project him as having a strong combine if he gets invited. But what's also important is what teams he might workout for in the process on the side. I do think he is intriguing to teams that want to stash him given his age, size and shooting skill. He came to America to make the NBA though, will he be okay with being a stashed player oversea's is another question.. Kind of defeats part of the purpose he came to America which if he's stashed puts him partly in square one again. This kid could have had a professional contract 3 years ago..

Rivals update for the 2017 class. 15 top 150 kids headed to the Big-12 with the possibility of 3-4 more by the look of things.

Preston at #10

Garrett up to #38 (he just keep sneaking higher and higher)

Duval #4

Waters # 37

Tilmon #42

Allen # 99

Other teams

Wigginton #23 (Iowa St)- kid is a stud

Young #15 (OU)- PG

Coleman #43 (Texas)- PG

Sims #56 (Texas)- PF

Ferbes #66 (Texas)- can shoot the ball

Culver #85 (WVU)- PF

Nembhard #88 (TCU)- SG

At this point I don't expect UNC to receive any punishment that will fit what happened. The cat and mouse game both sides have played for who knows how long has made a mockery of the entire situation. This happens with every single investigation it seems.

UNC has some ground to stand on regardless of the outcome the NCAA may come to.

The classes were open to all, even if they had a majority of football or basketball players in them earning free credits and maintaining eligibility from them.

If the NCAA can prove that the athletic department, counselor's, coaches, etc colluded to steer players towards these classes knowingly then the NCAA has a great case for handing out punishments. I think the UNC will continue to push deniability because they were accredited classes by the university, open to all, and they will continue to site jurisdiction of the NCAA here as they have at every step.

Wouldn't the real punishment be for UNC to lose its accreditation as an educational institution? Wouldn't that pretty much shut things down?

This case won't be settled this year, or next year so the issue is not even close to a resolution. Lawyers are going to muddy this up as they already have.

Make no mistake UNC deserves punishment but is the punishment really justified by punishing the future students/athletes? What is a just punishment for what happened? I believe this is a one of a kind situation where the NCAA doesn't have specific rules and guidelines to follow here. Again I am not defending UNC in any way, just pointing out that this case falls so much in the grey area of things. It seems like this will be a hard case for the NCAA to enforce with what will certainly end up in appeals or in a higher court.

Lawson Brothers Coming to KU • Apr 12, 2017 03:57 PM

@JayHawkFanToo

Feel the same way. I think Tubby is an old school guy and that is getting lost in today's game. At Texas Tech his goal was to slow the game down and limit possessions (especially against KU). I don't know what he's doing at Memphis but this past year he clearly didn't have enough talent around the Lawson's to be any good. He's losing basically his whole team and the best recruit he's has signed to date is in the 150's area. Memphis fans have to be furious about what's going on.

@BShark

Good point. We'll see what happens. At least this info came from Tremont. He'd definitely have a role here as a freshman it just wouldn't be one he might be seeking. So much going on for this 1 spot, or 2, or more if the Lawson's don't take up a scholarship for the season.. Getting hard to keep track of everything

@BShark

Preston has been twittering him as well

The school he'd get the most minutes at of the one's he listed is the school he asked out of his LOI from.

Tremont Waters said that KU has reached out to him as well as UCONN, Creighton and Georgetown

Lawson Brothers Coming to KU • Apr 12, 2017 03:23 PM

@dylans

Memphis didn't have the players the past few years. Pastner wasn't winning the way they wanted to after the success of Calapari. A lot of transfers. Guard play is a good place to start where their issue's were. Tubby Smith wasn't the best choice, he doesn't recruit at a high level. Now 6 of their 8 scorers are gone, I don't know how you keep Tubby after that even if its today's culture. The brothers were the only talent on the entire team. They resorted to playing walkons, Juco transfers they got in the spring and unranked 3 star prospects. That's not Memphis.

For those asking about scholarships • Apr 12, 2017 02:01 PM

@BShark

Should be able to, what bigs project to be on the team after 2018 season? Lightfoot is the only given.

Not KU but with Jarrett Allen staying in the draft for Texas look for Bamba to end up with smart. SMH all around at that one. Really doesn't matter anyway, Bamba is only in College for 1 anyway

For those asking about scholarships • Apr 12, 2017 11:50 AM

KJ could graduate by the end of his basketball "sophomore year".

1st year- red-shirt

2nd year- played as a freshman

3rd year- sit out transfer year

4th year- play as a sophomore.

With Dedric likely a OAD at Kansas because of his skill we may have the brothers just one year. Most likely Dedric is the more ready prospect and KJ could come back another year to have a featured role (especially if Chandler & DJ sign on for 2019).

It does seem like KJ might have the higher ceiling because he can play the SF/ small ball 4 position where as Dedric is a 4 that needs to refine his athletic ability and quickness to translate to the next level. KJ might develop more in his year off at KU and have some momentum for that years draft. Just thinking out loud for these two. They are both really good players and they are an excellent core to build around for 2018

Thoughts on Graham/Svi decision • Apr 12, 2017 11:34 AM

@brooksmd

That is correct.

Thoughts on Graham/Svi decision • Apr 12, 2017 10:26 AM

BTW the same person who said Graham was coming back (he has a source on the team) is saying that Svi will be going to the pro's.

Self after the banquet said Svi should have an immediate decision soon, basically all but pointing to Svi at least testing the waters. Will be interesting to see if he gets invited to the Combine.

We'll know soon enough

@jayballer54

yes Wooten de-committed from Arizona St.

Tilmon got out of his LOI today from Illinois
