@SoftballDad2011

i wish there was a mute button for him. imagine him and vitale doing a game.they would just talk about ucla and duke all game

boy Wake is starting to play like a team that is overachieving. They made shots the 1st half but this start to the 2nd has been ugly.

@SoftballDad2011

Indiana's defense isn't any good but you look at what they are a live and die by the 3 team and that's exactly the team that has an advantage against us. Indiana doesn't look great but they will prevail.

@joeloveshawks

Crean is a good coach, maybe a little overrated when comparing him to the elite coaches out there. I like how he's adapted his playing style to what is trending, shows you he can adapt. Indiana has an exciting style of play but they struggle to stop anyone and they have little depth in the post.

Vandy is very good but St. Johns is going to be one of the worst power teams in the nation.

We don't want anything to do with Indiana. You think we have trouble guarding the perimeter boy that team could run us out the gym. And their guards really guard

Self's Comments on Diallo Situation • Nov 22, 2015 03:35 PM

@KUSTEVE

been a popular conspiracy theory. I just hope this whole situation brings change that is deperately needed. If other universities would back KU as well it would be a great thing to see.

Brannen Greene • Nov 22, 2015 03:32 PM

@Lulufulu

This is certainly a stressful time for coach. I'm sure all of this has been a nightmare to deal with. I just thought us fans would stick behind our players instead of pushing them away. If Greene sticks it out and turns it around its going to be to our benefit as fans and for the team.

I understand Greene has done stupid stuff and we all have our opinions of his play and his character. If 6 games doesn't hit home then I'll believe he should be gone.

North Carolina • Nov 22, 2015 03:29 PM

@Bosthawk

Funny they are crying about freshman playing when they only have 2 of them and neither is better than the players playing in front of them. No top team is a finished product at this point and we only need to look at ourselves to see that. UNI still has a bunch of veteran guards with a very good coach. Kudos to them for getting the upset, it will pretty much solidify their spot in the tournament if they can't beat Wichita in their conference and have to be an at-large bid.

Brannen Greene • Nov 22, 2015 03:18 PM

Why would anyone want Greene gone? I understand the emotion of the loss, the emotion of his suspension but lobbying for him gone, jeez holds your horses guys. If Self thought what transpired deserved being kicked off the team it would have happened. 6 games sends a message especially when you miss the trip to Maui and you miss the opportunities to play better, get better.

Do I think 6 games is too much, maybe but it certainly gives him the final chance to learn from his mistakes. I certainly believe he had a legitimate gripe about his playing time but emotion of the situation got the best of both of them. Neither of them was going to rationally argue about playing time right after that loss. It would have been better had it not happened then, Greene probably avoids a suspension all together.

I've been guilty of jumping off the ledge way too fast in the past but we should all be hoping Greene truly learns from this mistake. We really do need him, you can't replace the shooting he brings and no matter your opinion of him I'd rather have him than not, it would be a huge loss to this team if he doesn't stick it out, doesn't learn from his mistakes. Jamari has been suspended every year here as well, its not like he is a lone in having to learn. Sometimes kids are just thickheaded and have to learn through continuous punishment. We shouldn't give up just yet.

Self's Comments on Diallo Situation • Nov 22, 2015 01:53 PM

Im glad they are trying to expose this situation for what it is. It's an utter shame that it has come to this. We know Self and the university wouldnt jeopardize anything by talking to the media without knowing they are right about this.

North Carolina • Nov 21, 2015 11:03 PM

@joeloveshawks

UNC does have a significant excuse with their best player hurt. The whole reason they played UNI was for Paige to play close to home which is always a thing Williams does with his seniors. Give UNI credit they took advantage of the close to home game and they still have enough pieces left over from last year's team to be dangerous.

Is this a worse loss than ours, absolutely it is. I didn't watch so I don't know the details but I know the loss to Michigan St has brough out the issues that have been brewing for a while and that has ignited a fan base that has gotten progressively upset at player execution and coaching issues.

I've seen the 2nd coming of Danny Manning • Nov 20, 2015 06:44 PM

@wissoxfan83

I believe he already is the freshman everyone is talking about, they've been talking about him for the past year being the #1 recruit and all. He's a special talent, one that probably contributes in the NBA now instead of having to wait until next year. His passing is uncanny for a big

Brannen Greene • Nov 20, 2015 05:22 PM

Svi can be heard dancing around in the hallway after hearing the Greene's suspension news. He's sayin I'm going to play I'm going to play.

Then Monday comes in Maui and Graham Selden & Mason combine for 120 minutes out of 120 minutes possible of playing time..

Attorney for Chieck Diallo says Felix Balamou is linked to same guardian as Chieck & was reinstated at St Johns yesterday. Good sign for KU.

Bad Joke Friday • Nov 20, 2015 04:59 PM

Today the NCAA has cleared one of Diallo's fingerpaintings from 1st grade while he was in Mali. Inconclusive evidence to suggest foul play was involved & the paint used was provided by the school and not an Agent checking in on his future earnings potential.

!finger painting 005.JPG ↗

The NCAA is looking into the validity of this painting. They are not sure if this was in fact Diallo's hand print or someone' else's. The NCAA claims the hand is proportionally big for a 1st grader. The NCAA has reached out to several experts in the field of finger painting all hoping for some clarity on the situation. Stay tuned folks

Brannen Greene • Nov 20, 2015 04:50 PM

@drgnslayr

Nothing good comes from these suspensions either. It's a distraction to the team, the team is now short 2 rotation players & important one's at that. How quickly the season has spiraled.

Brannen Greene • Nov 20, 2015 04:48 PM

@JRyman

No soup for you!!

Brannen Greene • Nov 20, 2015 04:30 PM

@jessenewell It will all become clear once you read KUAC drug policy. 4th offense = 6 games.

Recruiting updates • Nov 20, 2015 03:36 PM

@drgnslayr

Andrew Jones is a guard who's waiting until spring that is very good. More of a combo guard but definitely has the handles and passing ability. I really like that kid, reminds me of Vick in a lot of ways, lots of talent, good size & a lot of upside. Unfortunately we've gotten involved rather late but maybe will get him on campus in the spring?

Cheick • Nov 20, 2015 12:09 PM

@jaybate-1.0

I heard he used a banned finger painting substance on a 6th grade art assignment. He received a zero grade and the NCAA is trying to verify whether he needs to re-take finger painting again or not

Cheick • Nov 20, 2015 11:51 AM

@jaybate-1.0

Then why bite the hand that feeds you?

The only harm has been to Cheick himself, Cheick Diallo is fighting for his life let's not lose sight that the only person losing out here is him.

Fully investigate? 6 months worth buddy. You would think they were trying to solve a cold case with how much time its taken.

Recruiting updates • Nov 20, 2015 11:39 AM

@drgnslayr

No I feel it too, something isn't right. Sometimes I wonder though if the level we've reached recruiting wasn't sustainable.. We're a proven stop for the NBA so why is this class snubbing KU?

Right now the grass is just greener at UK/Duke, they are recruiting at a level we cannot compete with no matter how you slice it. What is interesting about the way recruiting is going is kids are intrigued by the new kid on the block. Texas A&M, Miss St, Cal, Auburn and others, all got monster classes this past year or this coming year by getting a new coach etc. Miss St has been a bottom dweller SEC team but just got 5 4 star players to go there. How?

There also moving towards joining with other top talent. If we had landed other top talent earlier we would have had a better chance getting others to join.

Let's use an example. Josh Jackson is by far the best player unsigned. He's an unreal talent, maybe one of the best players at his position in a long time according to some scouts. Now he's got Arizona, KU & Michigan St after him. Michigan St has signed a monster class, 4 top kids. Zona & KU have 1 each.. Jackson will sign with Michigan St if the trend continues for these top kids to join with others. Besides his connections to the guys signed there and growing up in Michigan, Izzo has all the momentum going for him by locking up the other talent early. Why would Jackson go anywhere else when he knows he will be surrounded by big time players- not Mitch Lightfoot- not Markannen.

I've been warning people here for months that this year isn't normal, and waiting until spring is going to bite you one of these years.

It's still clear that Bolden is the must have make or break recruit (just like Diallo was a year ago).
I still think he ends up somewhere else because there's nothing to say otherwise. The grass is greener at Duke. He can be the center of universe in Alabama. Or he can compete for 10 minutes a game against Landon Lucas next year? Maybe not true but I'm sure you will get the meaning. Even in landing Bolden its going to be like getting on the 5th best roller coaster at an amusement park. We missed the top tier talent. Bolden is an excellent player but is he the surefire day 1 post we will need next year? Jarrett Allen is an intriguing talent, has skill and can block shots but is he ready now? I don't know those answers.

Cheick • Nov 20, 2015 11:10 AM

@jayballer54

I think KU lobbied to get something out of this deal. It would have been a terrible thing for a kid to miss out on that kind of team experience traveling to Hawaii. It does maybe signify a decision is coming one way or the other and if its favorable of course KU would want its player with them and not sitting thousands of miles away helpless.

If he does get to play we will have to be patient, but it won't take long at all to see why he was such a coveted player.

Save all the arguments • Nov 20, 2015 11:00 AM

@Bwag

It's not an anomaly though. This team was 240 something in the country in 2 point shooting % last year. For clarity 2 years ago KU shot 49% as a team (a typical Self team's stat), last year 44% and that is huge difference. We can take stats for what they are worth, or discredit them but this team has more or less shown that its capable of missing shots, a lot of them.

It sounds cliche to say it but I have firmly believed with this roster that this team has to make shots, and at a high % for them to be successful. The most controllable aspect of how the game was lost was in missing too many shots.

I'm certainly not on the sky is falling ledge and the thing about Tuesday's game is with a veteran squad things can be corrected quickly. The defense & rebounding were always going to be struggles early for a team that doesn't have individual strengths in either area. So you can mask it by being an efficient offensive team. That was not KU tuesday, that was not KU last year. Either these kids step up and execute or we could have several more of these performances coming.

Done Watching KU Bball!! • Nov 19, 2015 07:11 PM

@Jayrawks1

That's certainly a valid response. I just think generally fans are upset that this loss looks awfully similar to how our seasons have ended in March. I mean what if all this talk is true again at the end of year? Its a frustrated fan-base that knows this team is better than the team it lost too.

What Is Wrong With... • Nov 19, 2015 03:59 PM

@drgnslayr

Maybe this loss will be what brings that chip out? This team was humbled, they should have won they know that. I just wonder how many more disappointments its going to take to reverse this trend.

Its a real question to ask whether Self has the right players he needs for his style or not. We lack that killer instinct again so far, we lack that true leader. As evidence of our offense execution for the game and down the stretch it was all about individuals and not the "team aspect" that Self preaches.

Of course losing always makes us jump down the throats of the guilty. We need to rant because from that we can heal, return to normal, and get ready for the next battle. Our coach was beaten, our players didn't execute, certain individuals really under-performed, & our veteran players who should get it, clearly still aren't getting it.

I'm really looking forward to seeing how we rebound in Maui. Another situation where we should win, but will we? That will be the test of Self and the teams mental capacity at this point. The pressure is on, we don't turn this around its going to get real interesting quick.

I want to believe that this team has that chip, maybe its something it will gain over the course of the year. We will need to see those statement type performances to know for sure whether they can or not.

What Is Wrong With... • Nov 19, 2015 03:37 PM

@ralster

You have basically hit every point on why we as fans and not only this board, have come to the realization that this loss stings badly because it opened up every can of worms about Self's coaching, his coaching style, his coaching execution, his decision making or lack their of..

This game was a reminder, a funneled version of how this team has failed in these type games for the past few years and its getting old. From the product on the court to recruiting there is no forward momentum right now and there hasn't been any for months.

The Summer games were great but as others have pointed out they have already been rendered useless by the outcome of Tuesday's game. If Korea was so beneficial, we would have beaten the 1-man team of Michigan St. The embarrassments are getting old, the coaching execution is getting old. I don't think any fan truly wants Self gone, but he's definitely starting to get knocked off king of the mountain status he's been on for years.

Of course next week we might see a better team, a better coached team. We play UNLV or UCLA, either will provide a challenge UCLA more than UNLV. Indiana or Vanderbilt is no walk over either potentially in the finals. Indiana is a top 15 team potentially, Vanderbilt is a much improved team from a year ago. We will find out real quick if we can turn around this loss into a positive. We took last years UK's debacle into a tourney win in Florida.

Statistical Nightmare! • Nov 19, 2015 12:56 PM

@DCHawker

Great point about Hunter. His rim protection is really needed. I'd live with his okay rebounding if he brought more on defense and offensive efficiency which he fully can. Self doesn't trust him to do it though otherwise he'd be out there.

Recruiting updates • Nov 19, 2015 10:52 AM

Nothing really good to report but I figured people would want to know anyway.

Kentucky just cleaned up in recruiting. In the last week they landed #5 Malik Monk yesterday, #6 Adebayo, & #7 Fox.

It was being reported that Azubuike was going to sign with FSU yesterday but that didn't happen so he won't sign early. sorry @drgnslayr

Allen & Bolden are now spring decisions.

We've been through this way too often now, stuck waiting and waiting.. Regardless of whether KU is lucky enough to get one of these guys, its been a failure on the recruiting end. I think we can put anymore recruiting talk to sleep until the spring.

BENCH LUCAS (cant play) • Nov 18, 2015 05:50 PM

@ralster

But we all knew Bragg would be sitting the bench. He was behind Lucas/Mari in exhibitions & the first game. It's not going to change anytime soon, not with another road trip to Maui next week where quality foes like UCLA & Indiana possibly loom. Last nights effort won't beat either of them.

Its clear he doesn't trust Bragg yet and will never trust Hunter enough to let them just play. It's just how it is

A Pure Embarrassment • Nov 18, 2015 05:43 PM

@Crimsonorblue22

on paper there isn't 4 better teams out there, we just didn't play to the ranking last night in the last 8 minutes or so.

Even without Diallo we have what 9 guys Soph & up..Hard not to be ranked high. Duke was a top 10 team on paper but they didn't play to their ranking either.

I don't believe Graham has looked good so far in exhibitions games etc. small sample size but he's seems to have the green light whenever he feels like it, the same guy who's supposed to be the opposite of Mason and gets people easy baskets. 20% from the field and 20% from 3 are just awful #'s to look at. sounds like another awesome made up rule.

A Pure Embarrassment • Nov 18, 2015 04:04 PM

@MoonwalkMafia

Your right it was a poorly coached game when the game got tight. I just saw something that said our guards took 21 of 32 2nd half shots. Good if your making them, the opposite when your top 3 go 9-36 for the game. I just think we are all looking to blame the coach when the real reason for the loss was the fact the ball didn't get in the hoop enough...

@JRyman

I don't believe we had a dunk last night. No Lobs which are a staple of the offense.

A Pure Embarrassment • Nov 18, 2015 03:54 PM

@JRyman

Mason puts himself in that hole where he thinks he has to do it all alone. He was having a bad shooting game so he kept feeding it instead of being a leader. When he plays bad, KU plays bad more often than not.

I give credit to Izzo for the subbing of McQuaid for tum-tum. Otherwise KU's players lost this game by not making the most basic of shots- a Layup.

@MoonwalkMafia
I get we all want to blame Self for his distribution of minutes to certain players but this isn't something new. This is our coach, I'm shocked so many people thought it was going to be different. We need Self to learn from this loss but that's just wishful thinking. He's prepared this team the same way he prepared last years squad. So far having a veteran squad has gotten him no further along then a young team.

@RockkChalkk

We lost because of a poor shooting night. 34% isn't good enough to beat most teams, regardless of talent. Michigan St made every basket from the 5 minute mark, KU was 2-12 in that span including missed FT's in 1&1 situations. Perry missed a wide open jumper for the lead which even with the ensuing 3 would have made it a 1 possession game instead of 2.

BENCH LUCAS (cant play) • Nov 18, 2015 03:09 PM

@rocketdog

nice post, why would Bolden or Allen come here then watching Bragg sit??

A Pure Embarrassment • Nov 18, 2015 03:07 PM

@JRyman

Yes I'm talking about those misses back to back. Lucas is a poor shooter so your only hope is to pray but Mason missing is inexcusable, but then again his whole game was that

A Pure Embarrassment • Nov 18, 2015 02:42 PM

As I pointed out in the Predictions threat, I predicted fouls, shooting %'s, Valentine going for 20+, and players feeling the minutes crunch were all going to happen. It would feel better if we won and all of this was true, but we lost and all of this was true so part of me wishes not even predicting anything at all.

The positive was we took advantage of the fouls for most of the game but when it got tight we either missed important FT's (Mason & Lucas) or stopped getting the calls that were fueling the lead. an otherwise great FT night 24-30 gets overshadowed when 2 of those misses were at the most important part of the game.

Can't win games shooting 34% from the field and 20% from 3. This is the same squad that was over 200th in the country in FG % last year. Hot shooting games will mask a deficient scoring team. Our backcourt went 9-36 from the field, including 2-13 from 3 land. The land of the bricks you could say happened. I saw Jesse post that we were 12-33 on layups. How is that even possible, I even saw Lucas miss the entire basket on a backboard layup attempt. Michigan St ends up 46% and 42% from 3, all from a coach that preaches the same principles as Self does but yet he's got guys who can make shots. It's simple, we make 40% of our shots in this game we would have won. Perry also had a grand chance to put us up 1 on that FT line jumper but he missed and then McQuaid nailed a 3 to put it away. That's a shot Perry has to make, your Senior, your go-to player wide open that's on him.

So what's the hope? There's plenty, its a bad loss we all know that but hopefully the guys learn from it and more importantly Self learns from it. This team has to become a better shooting team or else we will continue to have these games, that's a fact.

On a Positive Note- • Nov 18, 2015 02:20 PM

@Statmachine

Duke looked just as bad as Kentucky looked good. But yes even Michigan St was smart to play its talent over everything. They sat tum-tum because he was ineffective on offense, our defense sagged off him and they bring in a shooter who daggers us with multiple 3's. Smart subs right?

On a Positive Note- • Nov 18, 2015 11:25 AM

Please know the title is sarcasm.

That dribble weave made its way back as a "staple" of the offense again. How many points did we get using it? I counted zero!!

On a serious positive note, #ban the weave

BENCH LUCAS (cant play) • Nov 18, 2015 11:03 AM

@ralster

The answer to bench Lucas is to #Free Diallo.

Hunter is the last big for a reason (in Self's eyes). Bragg will not get the minutes he deserves until he stops playing like a freshman on defense.

A Pure Embarrassment • Nov 18, 2015 10:58 AM

Feels like the same squad, same outcomes, same deliberate choking of games doesn't it? And the same players playing poorly? I believe @wissoxfan83 was the one that said this is the same team just a year older. He's right, its the same team and we should expect no difference in result come March, no matter how far away that is. Last Night is exactly how this team will perform when things don't go their way, when the opponent doesn't go away and fights through their problems.

Without Diallo I knew that Self would revert to bad habits, that force feeding the post players we have into major minutes would come back to haunt us, it already has, its already squandered a marquee win and it will happen again. The domino effect that it creates without having him is profound. I thought we would mask the issue because its early, but its clear already that without your 2nd best post player in the game this is the struggles we will see. Rebounding was a huge weakness last night, how many 2nd and 3rd chance 3 pointers did they make last night- daggers. Rim Protection was non-existent. Those are the deficiencies Diallo would help correct but we will never know that, he's an outcast with this team at this point. But knowing how Self operates, Diallo probably would have played behind Hunter- which was what 3 minutes? Gotta follow the pecking order of bigs don't we...

I don't believe Self is the biggest culprit of the game, but he gets no credit for how he lets things spiral the way they do.

At some point the players have to make shots and point blank shots at that. How many layups did Lucas/Mason/Graham miss point blank??? The number had to be close or over 10.. Our Execution in the 2nd half is exactly how you lose games. Missed key FT's, mason bricking 1&1's, Lucas did the same. Name one thing either of these veterans did that is worth talking about. They flat out stunk. Add Devonte to that list, he took so many ill-advised shots I lost count. He was anything but our pass-first assist hunter we had become to see last year. He's a chuck shot happy fellow so far this year, apparently has the green light from anywhere.

@HighEliteMajor

I feel your pain in your post, but this is the same Self we've now gotten accustomed to seeing? Did you have that glimmer of hope that Self would finally listen to us in some way, that playing this player and this player would be the difference? There is no answer to your Why, because that's the downfall of a great coach who believes in what he believes in no matter if it loses the game or not. This is our leader, and its becoming increasingly harder to just follow him with blind faith. He will always have his Jamari Traylor even when he graduates.

Surprised so many are picking us to run away with this. Michigan St has the team to beat us and Izzo is usually always got a leg up in these games. I would love a runaway win but I'm expecting a close battle of 2 good teams.
