Think we got a better shot at seeing KJ shoot 40% from 3 then Bill playing zone. But yeah those two need major work on that end in their roles. Elmarko is another that was beaten too much for comfort but that's expected at this stage from him
He let the Illinois crowd get to him early, they were booing him. Apparently has a great relationship with their fans, they send each other x-mas' cards and take selfies together.
Had a hard foul on Hawkins that got reviewed. A preview of what we'll see from him I'm sure at times. Was ruled a common foul but I bet in real games that's Flagrant.
Certainly not his best game from a shooting perspective. Banked a 3, missed a whole bunch of good looks in mid-range. We did run some stuff to get him lobs and easy buckets. He didn't impress in this exhibition game but I'll remain hopeful
You can clearly see why Hunter is still in college, defensively. I hope that he improves on that end, the hedging was not good. KJ had some lapses defensively as well. Bill usually finds a way to mold em
Oh yeah it was disappointing.
This wasn't your normal exhibition game, and the crowd made it feel like a real road environment.
We kept it vanilla on offense though. The defensive effort was probably where Self should be most concerned if he's taking anything out of that. It was a good gauge to see where they in a setting that was disadvantageous for them.
I would expect better play in a week, we have a few tighteners before Kentucky and Maui. I don't think we'll see them look like a perceived #1 anytime soon. Not a fair ranking for this group.
In case anyone cares, Duke landed Cooper Flagg.

Nick had some looks, but he missed them all besides that pull up FT jumper. KU certainly didn't run any of their sets either so that upcoming opponents don't have film to study.
What we saw of perimeter shots from KJ and Elmarko did not look good. Hunter banked one in, and Kev drilled a big one from deep but besides that KU was easy to defend last night.
FT disparity was mostly due to the home crowd and KU's inability to guard anyone on the perimeter. Lots of tacky fouls at times but in the end KU never adjusted when Illinois drove every single possession to the paint.
I have faith in Timberlake. He looked way more bouncy in Puerto Rico than i thought. I really don't know his game, so not sure if he needs screens to get a shot off, or if he can dribble/shoot. We'll find out soon enough!
I may have to rewatch the game, but Elmarko seemed semi invisible mostly (he had one burst to the basket that i recall). And not sure if Self told Harris to chill (because he was not his usual self) and let Elmarko get things going or what.
No expectations for Elmarko to be brilliant early on. But that would be nice :)
Timberlake gets great bounce on his jumper so he shouldn't have any issue. I expect to see more out of him going forward as he gets comfortable. We need him to be a reliable shooter.
Elmarko had a few flashes but yeah he'll need some time. Another that I think we will see a lot more out of going forward

A night to reflect.
Overall Illinois played better & is currently further along. The crowd made an impact positively for them in a game that felt a lot more serious than an exhibition. Regardless this was probably the most real exhibition game KU has ever been a part of before a season starting. I hope the benefit to this was that is speeds up the development of this team for upcoming games. Better for find some warts now than when facing Kentucky etc.
Personally, I don't like the makeup of this team and haven't all off-season but I'm trying to stay optimistic and see how this team develops since Bill always figures it out. He's certainly going to earn his paycheck this year
Certainly flashed at times at a level we can get excited about. As always with him it's going to be about consistency shooting the ball.
Whatever it was he seems to be okay which is the main thing. Hopefully he'll be okay moving forward.
Kev got whiplash from that collision and will be ok said Self.
Not even to real games yet and got lucky already

So - NOT #1? I wasn’t able to watch the game. From the comments, HD is not the guy, KJ can’t screen it shoot, no one else stepped up and KU lost?
Unrealistic ranking for this bunch but that's okay. The difference in the game was more or less because of where it was played. Big advantage for Illinois, their fans packed it in and supported them like the game meant something.
This game had a conference game feel to it and the other team made more plays. Ku got their best shot in an exhibition.
We played like a team that's short a key player and that's the reality we are faced with this season due to what happened.
@dylans said in KU Maui Exhibition Game Chat:
Did KU lose an exhibition game to Illinois in 2022?
I believe so
Kev better be okay
Yeah that is not looking good
Ridiculous
Perfect let's get Kev hurt in a game that don't count
The zach and Parker line up is fun
Same ol hunter
Kevin showing this kind of skill is what we need. We certainly aren't getting anything new out of Juan and KJ.
Get a makeup call and brick free throws lol
Gotta make shots
@BShark said in KU Maui Exhibition Game Chat:
Self is probably thrilled to get this on tape. So much to work on defensively.
A lot to do on both sides
@kjayhawks said in KU Maui Exhibition Game Chat:
I don’t like switching 5 with this group huge mismatches with KJ and Hunter trying to guard little guys.
Neither of them can guard a lick on the perimeter either. It was unpleasant to watch
@cragarhawk said in KU Maui Exhibition Game Chat:
Don't do anything crazy like get a hand up or actually symbolize defense of any kind... geez
Or not have Hunter switched on their best player. That was stupid
I've have enough of Terrance Shannon.
Get elmarko the rock
Not much you can spin positively on this so far
Kj changed his shot
Took a 3 and well, sigh
Offense is going to be a big concern.
Defense is struggling around the paint, Illinois is athletic and making a lot of 1 on 1 shots
Kev made a big 3 and it looked better, he looks to have focused on that.
Hunter struggling is no surprise
Elmarko and kev with layups.
Elmarko getting the start

I don't think Coach is going to treat this game as an exhibition game; going for the Illini throats. I fully expect all the majority minutes will go to the starting lineup throughout and no weird, experimental, let's see what happens lineups. With Kentucky on Nov 14 and Maui starting Nov 20, this preseason No 1 team must be in mid-season form immediately. RC
Personally I can't wait for the inevitable Jamari/Zach/Parker line-up today. :)
Bill's clown the fans moment
Furphy will not play Sunday. He's now behind a good bit even when he gets back. Self down to 8 guys now although Zach will play in the 2 Exhibitions.
I will be absolutely shocked if our lack of depth doesn't hurt us especially later in the season.
Doubt they had a choice.
Self was not complimentary of this change.
But Yormark said that will change next season as the conference shifts to a 20-game conference schedule in the new 16-team league. There will be one "bye" week for the teams during the conference season. He said it was the number that was agreed to between the programs and the conference.
The conference certainly isn't getting better with change. Downright Awful. Self even mentioned that it will change a lot going forward..
Yeah Nick could start as well. I considered the shooting and experience vs 5 star freshman with the upside. I do think Elmarko will start, offseason intel on him was positive. I get the sense with the Morris departure that Nick & Parker will be used in those sub rotations to bring in experienced players since we don't have anyone else with experience to play. Depth is going to be a major issue this season if these two are not average replacement players.
Time to spark up some discussions about the season starting this Sunday with the exhibition game against Illinois. Certainly an interesting game to start out with. Illinois has a pair of really good players and an experienced roster. Not a cupcake game by any means.
Who starts along the 4 known (Hunter, KJ, Juan, Kev)?
I'm going with Elmarko. Options are limited and with Furphy dealing with an injury seems like the smart bet here.
I still don't believe it but I'm here for it, especially if it does end up true, which I hope it's true, please make it true. Scheyer could use a few hardships thrown his way since he took over the good ole boys club
Furphy is out a week or so with shin splits. Not good. Kind of the guy who can't afford to miss practice time.
Interesting to hear Self kind of hint that McDowell may be getting more minutes then we think. We shall see if it's just some coach speak
Good analogy and fitting.
We've had an unprecedented amount of success under Self and there will always be some low points sprinkled in no matter how good we have it. Seemed like the low points piled on this offseason and as you put it hopefully the storm has passed.
I fully support the transfer portal despite some of its warts. The amount of turnover from this past season's team was alarming and disappointing. Especially when you think 1-2 of them that left could have been pillars for future teams. Hopefully it all works out for the better. It needs to
I'll chime in since I asked the question and the responses have been good here.
I'm happy the offseason is coming to an end. I can't lie it was exhausting and there were more negative moments then there should be. I'm disappointed and I don't think that's going away anytime soon but I'll move on best I can. Games will help.
I'm going to lean on Juan, Kev & KJ to bring my enthusiasm back up to where it should be early on. Schedule is brutal so we'll be in some tough games soon enough.
Serious question.
Are y'all excited for this upcoming season? Is your excitement the same as always?
Or has the off-season of events (positive and negative) had an impact on your thoughts/opinions etc.
Interested to hear
Certainly not a good look. I'm exhausted from all this tbh.
The bag of tricks the NCAA keeps grabbing into and handing out needs an extermination though.

Not crazy excited about this one yet but he’s got a chance to be pretty good in 2 years
The key will be him sticking around long enough in this era to find out.
