I like that switch, Hunter can clearly stretch the floor and be used in the high post for passing as well. Sets KJ up near the basket to use his athleticism and ability to finish at the rim easier, get's him easy basket opportunities and keeps him from having to much outside his comfort zone.
Kenpom- #3
Torvik- #2
PER's- Everyone is gravy
If Hunter was a Hawk his entire career, he would currently sit #14 on the all-time scoring list. He's got a shot to sit 2nd unofficially after this season ends.
Buckets site seems to be having issues uploading so will have to wait to upload stats
Time to start this up again for the new year.
How does he look athletically? Don't think we saw a single minute of him playing to his HS tape
I would have been very concerned with Zuby playing the 4 next to Hunter defensively. At least from what we saw last year Zuby looked like a 5 strictly on that end. KJ at least can defend multiple positions which I think goes unappreciated. He may not be an elite defender but his experience guarding the perimeter to the 5 is something you don't find that often.
I didn't even consider the coaches in that response but good point.
Wish him the best tbh. But it's ironic to see that he landed in the same situation basically at his new school, playing 2nd fiddle. He downgraded in every facet to get the same outcome. To each their own decisions
Signs an amended 5 year deal to his lifetime contract. Highest Paid coach in College Basketball at 13 mil a year.
Take that NCAA.
Zuby ended with 2 pts in 8 minutes. He's stuck behind Soriano so that won't help him. Grass ain't greener bud
Certainly a bit different from Jalen and Ochai the past 2 seasons that were pretty much all business even with the media.
Here is somewhat of the stat. Michigan St was the first team since 2001, (Kentucky) to lose at home in their season opener to an unranked opponent as a top 5 team. So it hadn't happened in a while.
Izzo is 21-7 in season openers
Wonder if the stat was non conference home game against unranked opponent.
34 assists last night. Another positive if that's something this team can do at a high level.
I know Hunter was very excited to play in Allen so perhaps his own personal feelings instead of the team view comment there.
Wow!
Good season opener. Horrible opponent but I think these guys needed to have a game like this. Friday should go similar as well before Kentucky.
Was great to hear the home crowd in Allen Fieldhouse again. Been too long.
He's a little bit bouncer then I expected. Just hope we can rely on him at times
Would be nice if he can give you what Mitch gave us 2 yrs ago
As far as openers go, this has been very enjoyable
Yeah they suck. KU capitalizing
Me thinks kev might have spent some time with a basketball making a few baskets in the offseason
Hunter with 17, Kev with 15, Nick with 10.
21 assists on 22 made baskets. 78% from the field. 9/12 from 3
Hanged up 59 on em
Furphy a dude
Shooting the 3 well. Good to see
Hunter with 10 early. Kev with 5 and Elmarko has a layup
Technical difficulties for the leader of nothing
7-0 early
Yep
Kenpom has them 306 (out of 362). Whole new team & lost entire starting 5 apparently. Spread is at 28 or so.
Certainly, would like to see a blowout but I'm not sure this crew is built for them.
82-57, Kev has 22 to lead.
Biggest smiley face ever
We'll have to wait to see what others look like with so much turnover. Illinois looked solid but Underwood is known to underperform there.
Duke's core 4 that came back is going to be difficult to beat.
Purdon't has the behemoth and their core back.
Nova could look significantly different with Moore healthy and a solid transfer haul.
Marquette returned a lot especially their backcourt duo.
I remain hopeful this bunch will be molded into a team that we are accustomed too but I'm concerned we just don't have the right roster construction to get there.
So far the brightest spot is seeing Kevin ascend into the role that Agbaji and Jalen held the last couple seasons & has been handed off to him. Kev gets it, gives max effort every single play and his perimeter shot does look improved. The guys will follow his lead and hopefully we can get iron sharpening iron at some point.
When we talk about margin for error on teams, at least so far, this one appears to about as razor thin as it gets
Think Kev is that guy as long as healthy
I had already tempered expectations big time after the Morris debacle, but I've lowered them even more after this pair of warm up games. We'll see what this team can develop into as they have a lot to work on, perhaps more so than any Self team he's had. I'm excited to see how much this group can improve but it may be rocky.
RIP to a legend, was not my cup of tea but his legacy will certainly carry on in the fabric of the sport.
Harris with the nasty dime to kev
Hopefully Timberlake remembers how to make baskets at some point. Yikeys
Some good moments from freshman Jackson driving baseline for assists, Furphy active on d and has looked okay in his first game action. McDowell certainly has effort and seems like he can play some this year. Would like to see him show his perimeter shot.
I think scoring in general is going to be a big problem but perimeter shooting is certainly a major concern so far
Extremely sloppy offense
Had a dunk lob in traffic but on the other end its scary
Furphy in, 2 quick fouls. Love his size and they need him to acclimate.
Offense without Hunter in looks challenging. Elmarko with a nice assist to kev for a made 3.
Dickinson with 8 early. Other team doesn't have anyone that can guard him so there's that.
Adams has a 2 off high low.
Defense is still really poor but the other team isn't good
Nothing like seeing Allen Fieldhouse again. Good for the soul
Espn plus fun
@BShark said in KU Maui Exhibition Game Chat:
@kjayhawks Elmarko was even worse defensively than Nick though. Not many options.
Probably see them both play a lot better defensively as the season goes, especially Elmarko who's got the athletic ability and length to get coached up into playing d. Might have been a blessing for both to see what they need to do differently when playing good teams
Round 2 before real games begin next week.
Hopefully a different result tonight against an inferior opponent. Wishful thinking at least.
